The Unexpected Interview
Liam was about to head to the company when, just as the car started, Evelyn appeared outside, lightly knocking on the window.
Liam rolled down the window, a hint of confusion in his voice,
"Evelyn, is there something you need?"
Evelyn smiled, "Can you give me a ride?"
Liam hesitated slightly, "I'm going to work. If it's urgent, you can take any car from the garage."
Evelyn kept her smile, "I need to go to TechNova too."
After getting into the car, Evelyn said to Liam, "The final interview for the assistant to the CEO of techNova is today."
"Well, are you going for a tour?"
"No, I'm going for the interview." Evelyn organized her documents, then closed her eyes to compose herself.
Liam silently looked ahead, filled with curiosity and surprise.
Becoming his assistant wasn't easy; the competition was fierce, and those who had been eliminated were all top-notch candidates. He was amazed that Evelyn stood out among so many, realizing she was much more capable than he had initially thought.
He acknowledged he had underestimated her.
The interview began, and the atmosphere in the conference room was serious and tense.
After a round of Q&A, Liam's opinion of Evelyn improved significantly. Her answers were not only logical but also demonstrated deep professional knowledge and confidence. This made Liam look forward to the practical part of the interview.
At first, as the interviewer, Liam felt that the chances of anyone passing this interview were very slim.
He had to admit that when it came to work, he was picky, harsh, and unrelenting. Perhaps that was one reason for his success, but it also explained why he hadn't found a suitable assistant so far.
Evelyn was the last interviewee, and her ability to pass the rigorous written tests and interviews had already surprised Liam.
When he first met Evelyn, he saw her as a survivor like him, a particularly beautiful and charming survivor whose stunning looks couldn't be hidden even when she was disheveled.
During their time together on the deserted island, Liam admired Evelyn's optimism, strength, and helpfulness—a classic fairytale heroine, as Liam described her.
But now, Liam saw a new side of Evelyn: professional, intelligent, and quick-witted, almost like a seasoned veteran in the field, though her age betrayed her—she was only in her twenties. Maybe she could do it, a voice in Liam's mind suggested.
"Please draft a meeting summary within ten minutes." Liam handed her some documents.
Evelyn quickly scanned them and started typing. Her fingers moved deftly across the keyboard, and within ten minutes, a well-organized, concise summary was presented to Liam.
Perfect.
"Next, please create a preliminary timeline and task allocation plan for a new project."
Thorough, efficient. Flawless.
"Arrange my schedule for the next month, including meetings, trips, and personal activities."
It was as if Liam had arranged the schedule himself.
Full marks.
"Finally, prepare a presentation to introduce our new product to potential clients."
Not only captivating but also highly creative.
Exceeded Liam's expectations.
Evelyn completed each task with precision and efficiency, surpassing Liam's expectations.
Her professional skills were impeccable, and she showed high execution ability and attention to detail. Her familiarity and tacit understanding of his work habits were incredible, almost as if they had been working together for years.
Except for Evelyn, he couldn't think of a better candidate for the assistant position.
Liam took a deep breath, looked at Evelyn, and smiled, "You're hired."
Evelyn playfully winked, "I hope it's because of my professional skills, not my identity."
"Of course. I swear on the Montgomery family honor."
Evelyn never imagined how busy Liam's day could be.
She had previously thought of wealthy heirs as idle, spending their days racing cars, dating, doing drugs, hanging out in bars, partying all night.
Some so-called 'diligent' ones might visit the company occasionally, play games in the office, sign a few papers, and call it a day.
But Liam shattered her preconceptions.
Liam was fully focused on his work, typing rapidly on the keyboard, occasionally picking up the phone for brief, efficient conversations with clients or subordinates.
His desk was piled with folders that he reviewed and annotated swiftly, pausing occasionally to think before making quick decisions. His brow was slightly furrowed, clearly working on a complex problem. Sometimes, he would stand and pace the room, deep in thought.
Meanwhile, Evelyn busily followed Liam's rhythm. She meticulously observed his work habits, quickly adjusting her pace to meet his needs promptly.
After hours of continuous meetings, Liam returned to his office.
Reaching for his coffee cup, he found it warm and aromatic, clearly just replaced. He looked up to see Evelyn smiling with a coffee pot in her hand.
A few minutes later, Liam needed an important document. Just as he was about to get up to find it, Evelyn handed it to him accurately.
"Perfect timing," Liam remarked. "You always seem to anticipate my needs."
Evelyn continued her work, and when Liam needed a short break, he found a fresh glass of lemon water on his desk. Later, as he prepared for a video conference, all the equipment was set up, and the relevant documents neatly arranged before him.
While Liam handled company affairs, Evelyn silently managed urgent emails and drafted several replies. Whenever Liam needed a data report, Evelyn handed it to him before he could ask.
Liam was immensely satisfied. He realized Evelyn was not just an assistant but an extension of his thoughts, perfectly anticipating and handling every need.
He couldn't help but think again: Evelyn was a gift from the heavens.
For many years, Liam had resisted the idea of marriage, but now he felt that if he had to marry, Evelyn would be a great choice.
He began to envision their future together: eating, working, going home, playing piano, reading, sharing, sleeping in the same bed, and spending long years together.
The busy day finally ended. Evelyn rubbed her sore shoulders, thinking about relaxing at home.
"Do you know the privilege a CEO's assistant and girlfriend can enjoy in the company?" Evelyn asked.
Liam shook his head, waiting for her answer.
"Getting to use the CEO's private elevator after work, avoiding the hassle of waiting with other employees."
Just as Liam was about to respond, the elevator lights flickered and then went out completely, plunging them into darkness.
Evelyn gasped, her heartbeat quickening as she instinctively stepped back.
Liam immediately moved forward, gently placing a protective hand on Evelyn's shoulder.
"Don't worry, the elevator just had a minor malfunction."
In the darkness, Liam's posture was protective, his gaze showing a hint of concern. He reminded himself that although this was to comfort Evelyn, the protective instinct made him feel a sense of responsibility.
Feeling Liam's warm arm, Evelyn's heartbeat gradually returned to normal. She felt his warmth and security, making her feelings for him more complicated.
She took a deep breath, trying to calm down. "Thank you, you're quick to react."
Liam smiled, his voice gentle yet firm. "It's instinct. Relax, I've pressed the emergency button. Trust me, help will arrive soon."
Just as Liam said, help arrived quickly, and soon they were safely out of the elevator.
"It seems enjoying privileges isn't all that great," Evelyn joked.
In the villa's dining room, candles flickered, and the table was set with exquisite dishes.
Evelyn and Liam sat across from each other, the atmosphere seemingly harmonious, but Evelyn's mind was in turmoil. She cut her steak, sneaking glances at Liam, who was intently pouring her wine. This stirred a mix of emotions in Evelyn.
After spending time with him, Evelyn found herself increasingly drawn to Liam's charm. His thoughtfulness and care were breaking down her defenses.
She couldn't lie to herself; she was falling for Liam.
Liam seemed to be sharing some amusing stories, but Evelyn couldn't focus. She didn't even know how she responded, lost in her thoughts: No, this can't continue.
If she truly fell for Liam, it would betray all her past efforts and her deceased father. She had to stay clear-headed and stick to her beliefs and goals.
After dinner, Evelyn decided to talk to Liam. She knew she had to make a decision to prevent these complex feelings from troubling her further.
Liam was engrossed in the latest financial news, analyzing market trends and investment opportunities.
Suddenly, a light knock came at the door.
Evelyn gently closed the door behind her, her gaze firm. "There's something I need to talk to you about."
Liam stood up, walking over to her and gently holding her hand. "Of course, what is it?"
Evelyn lightly withdrew her hand, taking a deep breath. "I've decided I want to move out of the villa and find my own place."
Liam's brow furrowed, "Why? Are you unhappy here? Or did I do something wrong?"
Evelyn shook her head, her tone firm.
"No, it's not your fault at all. You've been wonderful to me, and I'm grateful. But I can't always rely on you. I need my own space to prove I can live independently."
Liam looked at her deeply, his eyes full of affection.
"But you know, I just want you to be happy. When we're together, I want to take care of you and protect you."
Evelyn smiled, her gaze gentle but firm. "I know you love me and want to protect me. But I also want to prove myself. I don't want to always be the one being taken care of. I have my own dreams and goals, and I want to achieve them on my own."
"I understand your thoughts, and I respect your decision. But I really don't want you to leave. I want to come home every day and see you, to spend every night with you.
Life is short, and between work, sleep, and daily necessities, the time we spend with our loved ones is very limited. If you move out, the time we have together will be even shorter."
Evelyn walked over, gently holding his hand.
"You have to trust me. Our relationship won't change because I move out. I just need some time to prove myself. And I'll always be by your side, no matter where I live."
Liam turned to look at her, his eyes full of pleading.
"Evelyn, no matter what you decide, I want you to know that I love you, and that won't change. If you really want to move out, I'll support you. But before you make your final decision, I hope you'll reconsider and stay with me. I understand your resolve, but please think about it again. Give us some time, okay?"
Evelyn hesitated, seeing the deep affection and reluctance in Liam's eyes, feeling a warmth in her heart.
"Okay, Liam, I'll reconsider. Maybe I can try staying a bit longer."
Liam exhaled deeply, hugging her tightly as if wanting to meld her into his body.
"I understand and respect your decision. Whatever you choose, I'll support you. As long as you're happy, that's all that matters."
Liam's face lit up with joy, and he held Evelyn tightly. "Thank you, Evelyn. I'll prove with my actions that my love and care are not constraints, but support and companionship."
Evelyn felt she had failed.
She hated her indecision but also felt happy about the choice she made.
This is the last time, she told herself.
