Liam's path: Chapter 3 (Optional Read)

Steve wasn't disheartened by the rejection of his confession. Instead, he became even more determined in his pursuit of Nova, making his efforts more visible than ever before.

Every morning, without fail, Nova would arrive at the office to find a fresh bouquet of flowers waiting for her on her desk. The flowers varied from day to day—sometimes roses, sometimes lilies, but always something beautiful and vibrant. Accompanying each bouquet was a small, handwritten card from Steve:

"May your every day be as beautiful as these flowers. — Steve"

Nova would take the card, slip it into her drawer, and mentally prepare herself to start the day.

One morning, the bouquet was a particularly striking arrangement of tulips, their bright colors drawing the attention of her colleagues. The office buzzed with whispers.

"Another bouquet! Steve is really putting in the effort!" Isabella commented enviously.

"Yes, today is the 28th, and this should be the 25th bouquet. One bouquet a day—Steve is truly persistent. His persistence is impressive. If someone pursued me like that, I'd definitely be with him by now," Ellie observed.

With work being relatively quiet today, Emma decided to drop by and chat with Nova. Emma was the first person Nova had met at the company after her memory loss, aside from Steve. Emma had been a great help to Nova when she first started, and Emma had quickly become a close friend. Emma often confided in Nova about her worries and concerns.

"Steve is young, successful, handsome, and undeniably romantic. I doubt there's a woman in the world who could resist his charms. It genuinely surprises me that you remain indifferent to him," Emma said.

"I'm not the exception." Perhaps because she had kept her secret bottled up for too long, Nova felt compelled to open up to Emma. "Emma, the truth is, I know nothing about my past. My memories are a blank slate."

Nova recounted how she had met Steve and shared details about her amnesia. Emma's eyes widened in shock. "This can't be real. Are you serious? It sounds like something out of a soap opera, not real life."

"I'm telling the truth. How could I not develop feelings for such an outstanding man like Steve when I'm with him every day? I'm just scared. I don't know what my past was like. I'm afraid that if I get together with Steve and regain my memory, I might discover that I had a boyfriend or even a husband in the past. I'm afraid of causing harm, so I don't dare to make any changes."

"But you've already caused harm. You've disappointed Steve, who admires you so much. He's been desperately pursuing you, and you haven't responded. More importantly, you clearly have feelings for him but are too scared to accept them. You've shut off your own heart," Emma pointed out sharply.

"Have you consulted a doctor about your amnesia? What did they say?" Emma inquired.

"I had a thorough examination. The doctor found no signs of head trauma. They mentioned that I might regain my memory one day or I might never recover it," Nova explained.

"Do you have any indications that your memory might return?" Emma asked.

Nova shook her head.

"If you never regain your memory, are you going to live like this forever? Will you remain single for years, even decades, waiting for a partner from your past who you might never find?"

Emma's probing left Nova in contemplative silence.

"You only live once. Your youth and your prime years come only once. Are you sure you want to waste them? If I were in your shoes, I would choose to be with Steve," Emma urged, her voice filled with conviction.

Emma's words left a deep impact on Nova. After Emma left, Nova opened her drawer and took out the collection of cards Steve had written for her. She read each one carefully:

"Let go of the uncertainty and allow me to be the one who brings light into your life.

Forever by your side, Steve"

"You make my heart race in the best possible way. I can't imagine a day without you.

Forever yours, Steve"

"Even if you can't remember the past, I want to be the one who creates new memories with you.

With all my heart, Steve"

"I understand your hesitation, but I promise to show you every day how much you mean to me.

Yours always, Steve"

"In a world full of temporary things, you are my forever.

Endlessly devoted, Steve"

"In vain have I struggled. It will not do. My feelings will not be repressed. You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.

Tenderly, Steve"

"I may have everything money can buy, but what I truly want is a lifetime with you.

With deepest affection, Steve"

"I am yours, don't give myself back to me.

Lovingly, Steve"

...

Reading these heartfelt notes, Nova could almost picture Steve writing them—serious and focused, each card a testament to his hope for a response.

Emma was right. Even by doing nothing, she had already caused pain. She had disappointed two hearts longing for love.

At that moment, Nova felt a powerful urge to rush to Steve's office, confess her feelings, embrace him, and apologize for keeping him waiting.

Just then, Nova's phone rang. It was Steve calling. He explained that he had left an important document at home and asked if Nova could retrieve it for him.

"No problem, I'll head over right away," Nova replied, her earlier impulse to confess fading slightly.

Perhaps she would talk to Steve after work, Nova thought to herself.

Years later, when Nova looked back on this event, she always considered it one of the most important turning points in her life. If there were parallel universes, perhaps in that world, Nova would be with Steve for a lifetime.

It was an ordinary afternoon.

Nova rushed to retrieve the document for Steve. While searching, she accidentally stumbled upon a hidden photo. The image depicted a couple in formal attire within a grand hall, and the woman in the photo bore an uncanny resemblance to Nova.

Nova's first reaction was that the woman in the photo was herself, and Steve had concealed her past. But she also tried to justify Steve: the woman in the photo might be her twin sister; it's not uncommon to find someone who looks like oneself in a large world. However, such a flimsy excuse couldn't convince her. The chance of Steve having a photo of someone who looked exactly like her was slimmer than the probability of the world ending tomorrow.

Nova's heart raced. This photo seemed to be a crucial clue in uncovering her past. Whether the woman in the photo was indeed her or a twin, confirmation was necessary.

Nova carefully examined the photo. The background hall looked very luxurious, and the couple's attire seemed expensive. The man in the photo even resembled Steve. Wealthy and having a resemblance to Steve—Nova had a sudden realization: this might be Steve's brother!

Thanks to the internet, Nova quickly found the information she needed. The man in the photo was Steve's brother, the well-known billionaire Liam, and the woman in the photo was Liam's fiancée!

Nova continued to search for details about Liam: his rise to inherit the family business, surviving a plane crash, attending charity galas, his miraculous survival, and his business acumen... These were all fascinating but not what she was looking for.

Nova then searched for: Liam's fiancée Evelyn. The page displayed many news articles about Evelyn: the romantic relationship between Liam and Evelyn, their meeting, Liam publicly thanking Evelyn... Nova carefully looked for the information she needed. Suddenly, a news article titled "Evelyn in a Car Accident" caught Nova's attention. The article described Liam's deep affection for Evelyn after the accident and the grim news that Evelyn might become a vegetable, lamenting the capriciousness of fate. Just as Nova was about to close it, a seemingly insignificant date caught her attention.

The day Evelyn had the car accident was the same day she had met Steve after losing her memory! A coincidence might be a coincidence, but many coincidences together might reveal the truth.

The familiar feeling she had when she first saw Steve might not have been about Steve but about Steve's face resembling Liam's.

At this point, Nova leaned towards the hypothesis that she was Evelyn in the photo, but confirmation was still needed.

Nova called Steve. She directly asked, "I'm Evelyn, aren't I?"

Her hands trembled slightly as she awaited Steve's response. On one hand, she hoped to reclaim her past and confirm her identity as Evelyn. On the other hand, this meant that the person she liked was a deceiver—Steve had been lying to her all along!

Steve was silent for a few moments. Sometimes, silence can speak volumes.

"Don't lie to me. I need you to tell me the truth," Nova urged, her voice steady despite her anxiety.

On the other end of the line, Steve seemed to lose his composure, collapsing into his chair. "I'm sorry," he finally said.

"Damn you! You liar! I wish I had never met you!" Nova shouted before hanging up the phone.

Steve tried to call her back, but Nova quickly cut the call. After several attempts, Steve realized he had been blocked. He rushed to the elevator, pressing the button frantically, but it didn't arrive. Steve gave up on the elevator and ran down the stairs to the parking garage.

Steve jumped into his car, slammed the gas pedal to the floor, and sped away.

The navigation system kept warning him about speeding, but Steve ignored it. He was driven by a desperate need to see Nova as soon as possible. A sinking feeling gripped him; he feared he was about to lose her. Nova hated deceit, and he regretted not coming clean sooner. What had started as a quest for revenge against Liam had evolved into genuine love for Nova. He was terrified that if she discovered the truth, she would leave him, so he had kept it hidden.

Finally, Steve arrived. He leapt out of the car and called her name, but no one responded. Steve, unwilling to give up, searched every room but found no sign of her. He was forced to face the harsh reality:

Nova had left.

Late at night, Steve finally learned that Nova had checked into the Royal Hotel, which was far from the company and, unbeknownst to her, a hotel in which he held shares.

As the largest shareholder, Steve used his influence to secure a room next to Nova's. However, when he discovered that Liam was staying in a room next to hers on the other side, his emotions nearly spiraled out of control.

At this point, Steve wondered if they had already met or if they had exchanged any words. How did Nova feel about it? Was she considering rekindling her past with Liam? Steve's mind was filled with such thoughts, almost driving him mad. If it weren't for the late hour, he would have been unable to resist knocking on Nova's door.

Nova and Liam's meeting was purely coincidental.

Liam had come to New York guided by fate to find Evelyn, and it just so happened that Evelyn crossed paths with him while checking into the hotel. Liam heard a voice that resembled Evelyn's. Despite his previous misjudgments, he went to confirm if the person was Evelyn. It was as if destiny had ensured their reunion.

At that moment, Liam felt like a person dying of thirst in the desert, having come across mirages of water too many times. Just when he had lost hope, he found the oasis. His excitement and joy made him resemble a child learning to speak: "E...Eve...Evelyn?"

Nova turned to look at Liam. At the instant she saw him, her heart began to pound violently, telling her that she had once deeply loved the person before her, even though she still couldn't remember anything.

"Liam?" Nova called tentatively, suddenly feeling water droplets sliding down her face. She touched her cheek and realized she was crying uncontrollably.

Nova and Liam had a conversation in a quiet café, where Liam did most of the talking, with Nova listening.

Liam didn't elaborate on how much he loved Evelyn or how he had tirelessly searched for her. Instead, he described everything he knew about her past from an observer's perspective, given that she had lost all her memories.

"This is everything I know about your past," Liam concluded.

Evelyn was so engrossed that she didn't realize she had already shed tears.

At least three people at the Royal Hotel had difficulty sleeping that night.

Evelyn decided not to hold a grudge against Steve for deceiving her. After all, they had once helped each other through difficult times.

While Evelyn's long-standing issue was resolved, she found herself in new trouble.

Every time she went out, there were two very handsome men accompanying her, one on each side, never leaving her.

"Do you two have nothing better to do?" Evelyn asked irritably.

"Like you, I am currently unemployed," Liam answered first.

"Even without me, the company can function normally. This is what you told me before," Steve said.

The jealousy of men is far more terrifying than that of women. Evelyn had asked them many times to go away and do their own things, but it was all in vain. Both men remained steadfastly by her side. It seemed as if if Evelyn spent time alone with one of them, the other would feel seriously wronged.

Steve and Liam's appearance and attire made it hard for anyone to believe they were bodyguards. At first, Evelyn felt awkward when people pointed and whispered about the three of them, but over time, she became immune to it.

It must be said that Steve and Liam were so strikingly handsome that they attracted many young women's attention when Evelyn went shopping with them.

"Hi, I'm Amelia," a fashionable, attractive young blonde woman greeted Steve. "Do you have a girlfriend? Would you mind giving me your contact information?"

Steve politely declined, "Sorry, I'm pursuing the woman beside me."

"That's okay." The blonde woman approached Liam. "I assume you're still single. Can we exchange contact information?"

"I'm afraid not," Liam said, still irritated by Steve's shamelessness. He suppressed his anger, "She's my fiancée."

The blonde woman's mouth fell open in surprise. Her gaze shifted between Steve, Liam, and Evelyn, as if trying to decipher their triangular relationship. Finally, she gave Evelyn a "you're so lucky" look and ran away, covering her mouth.

Since then, Evelyn avoided going out unless absolutely necessary.

Despite losing her memory, Evelyn fell in love with Liam once again.

Evelyn's choice forced Steve to let go.

Liam had once again taken away his most precious and valued possession.
