Chapter 9
It seemed like they weren't getting anywhere at all. The corridor kept going in the same direction no matter how far they went. They had been walking for almost an hour now and had even run at some point. There was nothing to fight except their own minds as they second guessed themselves the entire time. Even if they were to turn back, where would they go? Had they simply gone the wrong way to begin with? Would this tunnel even end? Had the dragon tricked them?
There were so many questions that (y/n) had, but the most concerning question that weighed the heaviest on her mind was whether or not she could even save Pit. She hadn't said anything because she didn't want him to panic, but his hair had began to dull into black starting from the roots. They had been taking a break sitting down to gather their energy when Pit had mentioned the wound that was still present on (y/n)'s arm. That wound was the only proof they had that the dragon had at least been real. However, when he mentioned this, she also noticed his changing hair color. The only thing letting her know that Pit was still himself was his blue eyes that were beginning to dull from slowly losing hope.
Since then, they had been walking even more with the same scenery and the same lingering doubts. Neither of them could tell how much time had passed. It could be anywhere from morning to night, yet they'd never know. "(Y/n)..." Pit suddenly spoke as he stopped in his tracks. She looked at him and immediately felt guilt and heartbreak upon seeing the tears lining his eyes. "Am...am I going to die?" he asked. The color had reached the tips of his hair now and he seemed almost as if he were an entirely different person.
"I'm going to continue to do everything I can to save you, Pit. It's my fault you're here now. If you want to blame me, go ahead. It's all my fault," (y/n) answered. Pit shook his head at her.
"You didn't know. I can't blame you...but I don't want to die either," Pit whimpered. He dropped his weapon and quickly wiped his eyes. "I've gone all of this time not knowing so many things and now I'm going to disappear. It isn't fair..." It was easy to see that he was giving in to his despair, but (y/n) had a feeling that it wasn't just his own hopelessness he was feeling. As she thought this, a glint of green light flashed in her peripheral vision. Both she and Pit looked down to the end of the corridor where they had been heading.
Hope sparked in Pit's eyes as he picked up his weapon. "Do you think...?"
"It must be. It has to be," (y/n) confirmed. The way out. They weren't certain, but it was all they wanted it to be. If it was anything else, they'd certainly give up at this point after so much doubt. Pit was about to go ahead of her, but (y/n) held an arm out in front of him before he could do so. "Let me stay up front. My divinity will protect me to an extent if we really are in danger," she spoke. Pit gave a slight nod before the two of them began to slowly walk towards the light.
They were being cautious so as not to put themselves in a bad predicament, but the closer they got, the better they could see the source of the light. There was a single door waiting for them. In the center of the door was a pulsing orb stuck in the middle of it. There was no knob nor were there any clues other than the pulsing orb. As (y/n) and Pit got closer to it, they lowered their guard just a bit since there weren't any enemies in sight.
"What is it?" Pit asked her. (Y/n) had no idea, but it must have been their way out of this repeating torment of a tunnel.
"Whatever it is, we need to figure out how to get past it. The door has to lead to somewhere impor-"
"It does. I'm surprised the two of you made it this far. I'm impressed," the voice of the dragon inturpted her words. "By now, a majority would have given up hope within the first hour. For you to have finally given up right at the end is quite amusing."
"You've been watching us the whole time," (y/n) realized.
"It's my labyrinth now. I can do what I want. If you can solve my riddle, I'll let you through to the heart of the labyrinth. I let you two take the path without fighting so it's the least you could do." It was as if the dragon was laughing at them. He had indeed helped them, but it seemed nothing like it.
"We can solve a riddle. That's no obstacle to us," Pit announced. He seemed determined now that he knew that there was still a solid chance that he could be saved.
"Very good. Now, what is something not easily given but easily taken? To some it has no price but for others money will suffice. It is not something you can touch although many say they can feel such. Speak it's name and you will win my little game," the dragon spoke.
They were silent. Neither of them knew the answer. It wasn't any riddle (y/n) had ever heard before. "Can we...get a clue?" Pit quietly asked. The dragon laughed at him.
"Did you not just say that a riddle was not an obstacle for you? Why would I give you a clue? You'll have to figure it out yourself if what you are after is so important to you." The answer left the two of them stuck to figure out what the answer to the riddle was. "You have forever to figure it out, so take your time," the dragon added. What the dragon likely didn't know was that while (y/n) might have forever, Pit did not.
"(Y/n), you've got an idea right? All I can think about right now is food and not dying..." Pit mumbled.
"I don't, but I'm not letting you die. I'm going to figure this...riddle...wait, Pit repeat what you just said." (Y/n) realized what the answer might be.
"Uh...you've got an idea right?" Pit said, clearly confused as to why he needed to repeat himself.
"No, no the other thing. Actually, nevermind. You don't have to. I think I know what the answer is. Something easily taken, priceless, and untouchable. I think it might be...a life." Everyone was silent, even the dragon. For a moment, (y/n) thought she had gotten it wrong and now they'd be stuck there since she had nothing else to guess. Her dread disappeared when the orb on the door grew brighter and the door lifted revealing a room full of gold and a vast amount of other treasures. The room was easily as large at a themep
"You got it right. I'm surprised," the dragon mused. "I thought you'd never get it. Honestly, that's one of my best riddles."
(Y/n) didn't pay the dragon's voice much attention. Instead she was entirely focused on finding the mirror of truth. She and Pit entered the room and could care less about the amount of gold all over the place. "I'll check over here. You look over there. We can cover more ground that way."
"But isn't it safer to stick together? This place could be rigged with traps," Pit mentioned. He made perfect sense and (y/n) had to agree. She would have spoken, but Pit suddenly lost his balance from sudden light-headedness. She was quick to catch him and get him back upright.
"Are you okay?" she asked. Worry was laced into her voice as Pit held his head instead of replying. "We don't have much time. It's getting worse," she mumbled.
"My head hurts but...I'll be fine. We can't give up yet," he softly spoke as he fought the obvious pain he was in. Regardless of his words claiming that he was just fine, (y/n) kept hold of his arm and began to guide him through the mountains of gold. He didn't protest, but he did keep his weapon firmly gripped in his hand in case he needed to fight. (Y/n) wouldn't let him.
"You're passing all of the gold. It's all right in front of you." The dragon seemed to be baffled by their lack of interest in the highly valued precious metals. "Perhaps you are looking for gems instead? That would be further into the heart of my treasure. You've made it this far so I'll reward you with whatever you'd like."
"Mirror. We need a mirror," Pit muttered just as his legs gave out and he slipped from (y/n)'s hold falling into the gold around them.
"Pit!" (Y/n) was quick to drop to his side and attempt to get him on his feet again. "Come on. We're almost there. You just told me yourself that we can't give up yet," she encouraged.
"I'm trying. I'm sorry, everything is just getting fuzzy," Pit spoke. He clung tightly to her arm. "I think I'm disappearing..."
"The mirror you seek. It isn't the Mirror of Truth is it?" The dragon's words brought a bit more hope into (y/n) breaking heart.
"Yes! It is! Please, tell us where to go. He doesn't have much time left."
"That mirror isn't something one should seek. Are you sure you are willing to handle the consequences for doing so?" Pit's grip began to get a little weaker as he attempted to stand again.
"I don't care what happens!! Just take us to the mirror! I brought him here and I can't just let him die!!" (y/n) shouted. She was desperate and didn't care that she was yelling at a being that could easily end her and Pit's lives right then and there. It didn't really occur to her that she had even done this until green fire suddenly surrounded her and Pit. She snapped her eyes shut as a mere reflex. The fire had disappeared and she was in a room with nothing but a tall mirror in the middle of it.
"Pit, we're here. We can make it, come on," she said in relief. She pulled him up with her having made the decision that she'd carry him to the mirror if she had to. To her relief, he was able to walk with her. She could see how much he was straining himself just to do so.
"You brought this upon yourself. To think that such bright minds would be seeking something so vile. It's a shame." (Y/n) didn't know what the dragon meant, but it couldn't have been anything good. She got Pit to the mirror and the both of them stood in front of it, Pit having to lean onto (y/n) for support.
"Asclepius said that all you had to do was look into it. Do you feel any better now?" (y/n) asked. She got no answer as Pit lost conciousness, falling into her arms since she had been able to catch him. As he fell, his hair reverted back to its original brunette and his wings began to gain their color until they were white again. Even so, Pit was still out cold and (y/n) had a new problem to deal with. Appearing out of virtually nowhere were several figures made up of shadowy clouds. Their glowing red eyes added to the eerie effect. What made things so unsettling was not only their sudden appearance but also who they resembled. All of them, each and every one of them, looked like Pit.
"Whatever you are trying to awaken from that mirror should be left there. I warned you," the dragon's voice could be heard. "I cannot save you here in this area. The mirror has full control until the darkness has been tamed."
(Y/n) didn't like the sound of that. She couldn't get Pit to wake up and now they were surrounded by enemies that kept appearing. They were certainly done for. With a frown, (y/n) gently lay Pit onto the ground and stood up. "You picked a fight with the wrong deity," she seethed. "I won't let a single one of you touch him."
