Chapter 7
"So you named him?" (y/n) asked. She and Pit were sitting in the grass under one of the garden's trees where Pit had explained the situation.
"Yeah, I named him Dark Pit," he answered with a nod.
"And he's okay with that?" (y/n) wondered.
"I think so..." Pit gave her a half hearted shrug. Dark Pit had accepted the name just fine last time he checked.
"So you want us to save him? Can he hear me right now? How exactly does this even work? I've never come across a situation like this," (y/n) began to rant. "Technically, my original plan should still work, but I don't know how things will work out. The Mirror of Truth isn't the same as it once was. It's adapted to the modern world. Medusa owns a fake of the real deal that copies things just like the original used to, but copying you wouldn't solve the problem."
"If the mirror of truth doesn't copy things, then what does it do?" Pit wondered. (Y/n) gave him a grim look.
"That's the problem. I don't know. Asclepius just told me to take you to it. I trust him with my life, so I'm going to take you. He didn't really give me any other options," (y/n) explained. Pit blinked at her a few times saying nothing in response to what she admitted.
"Um...Dark Pit doesn't like your idea. I won't repeat what he said, but he really doesn't like your idea," Pit quietly stated.
"Well does he have any better ideas?" (Y/n) waited for a response with her arms crossed, but Pit simply shook his head. "I didn't think so. Either way, neither of us can go back home. Palutena will erase your memories if you go back, and I'll have a Divine Orne to worry about. I've got to rethink everything now. This really sucks." She had gone back to Asclepius for help, and he had told her to return Pit as soon as possible to avoid an all out war. He was right, but (y/n) had refused since she would feel guilty knowing what she knew about Pit. The angel had no clue what the world was like now. It would be wrong to let Palutena take away his freedom again. He was practically a prisoner in her domain. "Asclepius wanted me to take you back," (y/n) muttered. She met Pit's gaze seeing that he clearly didn't like the idea.
"Will you?" he asked. She could see in his eyes that he was willing to fight her if it meant not going back. The tension in the air grew far too quickly in that instant.
"Of course not. I made Asclepius tell me how to save you. He still advised against it, but going to the depths of the Underworld to get to the Mirror of Truth is our only option. Once I make sure that you nor your new friend die, then we can worry about how we'll deal with Palutena and that Orne. I've lived in Seattle for a long time, and I don't want to move. We'll find a way to fix everything so I can show you what the city is like I promised." Pit seemed to be put at ease by her answer.
"Well, where do we start? You said we're in the Underworld right now. It's hard to believe since this place is so beautiful. I thought the underworld was a desolate wasteland full of lost souls and creepy enemies," Pit spoke. He looked around once again admiring the scenery.
"Well it used to be, but there were always some places of beauty in the Underworld. The desolation is mostly around Medusa's lair. Right now, we're in the Garden of Persephone. It really is a beautiful place, yet it's right near the Labyrinth of Deceit. Pandora used to be in charge of it, but she let it get out of control. It's practically a death trap now. Most angels that go there don't make it back, and there's no telling what happened to them," (y/n) explaned. "Those that did make it back usually can only say they faced their worst nightmares in that place."
"And we're supposed to be going there ourselves to find the real Mirror of Truth?" Pit questioned.
"Yep." (Y/n) could see the unease in Pit's features. "We really have no other options at the moment. If Medusa finds out that you aren't in Palutena's domain anymore, she'll search for you just like Palutena is probably already doing. That's going to lead to a bunch of problems on its own."
"I'm starting to think the world is a lot more dangerous than I remember. The last time I was in the Underworld, I almost died...a lot," Pit muttered. (Y/n) tilted her head at his words.
"We aren't leaving right away. First we've got to establish a base which is why this garden here is the location I set for emergencies. It's hard to get to from the outside without my relocation charms. We'll get some rest before we figure out our exact plan. It's going to make things a lot...easier." (Y/n)'s determination faded a bit when she looked at Pit's wings. "You've got to be kidding..." She mumbeled.
More of the white feathers of Pit's wings had turned black. It was hard to miss especially considering the ratio was now half and half. "When did this even happen. I don't understand. You feathers aren't supposed to change this quickly. They were just fine before we got here." (Y/n) reached out and took hold of one of Pit's wings. It was as if they had changed right before her eyes without her even noticing. "At this rate..."
"I know. There's no time to wait. Dark Pit said so. He thinks coming to the Underworld made it worse," Pit finished her sentence where she had purposely trailed off.
"Then we have to go as soon as possible. It's not even afternoon yet. We'll get changed and head into the Labyrinth of Deceit. We have no choice because I'm not sending you back and I won't let you die. I sort of started this, so now I've got to finish it. Now where's that bag you brought with you?" (y/n) declared. Pit pointed at the bag that he'd sat down and she quickly went over to sit down next to it. "Throw these on so we can get going. The sooner you lose that angel look you've got going on, the sooner we can head out."
"What's wrong with what I have on?" Pit questioned. He pulled at his robes of white likely confused as to why they needed to go.
"Nothing really. It's just easier if you aren't automatically recognized. Wearing that will definitely raise some suspicions, but if you borrow some of my sweat pants and keep the undershirt, you won't stand out as much. The Labyrinth of Deceit is both friend and foe to everyone, but Palutena's angels in particular are targeted more often. I suppose you could say they haven't caught up with the times..." she explained before pulling a pair of grey sweatpants from the bag. She tossed them to Pit before going back into the bag for her own set to change into. Luckily there were two sets of emergency clothes in the bag, so she had what she needed.
"Um...do I just...go behind a tree?" Pit muttered as he looked around.
(Y/n) sighed. "Just go ahead and change. I won't look," she said before covering her eyes. For a good minute, she sat there waiting for Pit to change all the while hoping that he would at least be able to do this much for himself. Sweatpants were simple enough...right?
"These are surprisingly comfy...nice and warm," Pit muttered. (Y/n) peeked between her fingers seeing that Pit actually fit in her clothes. Without all the white fabric in the way, he seemed more dark themed than normal, especially with his wings turning black themselves.
"Alright, turn around and close your eyes so I can change to. If you so much as turn this way while I'm changing, I'll burn you," (y/n) said.
"Don't worry, I won't," Pit assured with an innocent smile. He did just as asked, giving (y/n) plenty of time to swap out her own robes of grey with a full set of modern wear. She ditched the hoodie since she needed her wings for their mission. Pit couldn't fly afterall which meant that he would need to borrow her power or she'd have to fly him herself. The second option didn't sound to favorable since she would have to carry him, and that was something she'd rather not do.
"Alright, let me hide this bag and set up another relocation charm for this area just in case. Then we can go to the Labyrinth of Deceit from here. Once we get there, I can always get us back so long as I have these with me," (y/n) spoke as she dumped all of her charms into the pockets of her own pair of sweatpants.
"You have a place to put those? Where do they go when you put them there?" Pit asked as he turned around to see her storing the relocation charms.
"Um...Pit. These are called pockets. Please tell me you know what a pocket is. I swear..." (Y/n) hoped he was kidding, but the the color rising to his cheeks as he held his head down to avoid her gaze told her otherwise. "Yeah, I'm definately not letting Palutena take you back," (y/n) mumbled. She grabbed her emergency bag and went over to an emerald bush before placing the bag behind it and letting her wings free once again. Her tank top was specialized for the six wings she was proud to own.
"What are you doing?!" Pit asked in surprise as (y/n) plucked two of her feathers straight from their roots. She looked back at him seeing that he had unconsciously reached back to touch one of his own wings as if the feathers had been taken from him instead.
"I'm setting up new relocation charms. What? I can't just pull them out of nowhere. They have to be created. If you're worried about my wings, there's no need. The feathers grow back pretty fast," (y/n) explained.
"But doesn't that hurt?" Pit asked with a shudder.
"Yes, yes it does. I've been through much worse though, so it's nothing more than like getting a paper cut...well no. Paper cuts are terrible. It's more like getting pinched, I guess." Her words didn't seem to do much in convincing him, so (y/n) just sighed and went back to what she was doing.
She took the two feathers and set them aflame in her hand which only startled Pit even more. The flames burned until they turned gold and formed the relocation charms that (y/n) used to effortlessly travel even without her wings.
"So all of those things in your pocket used to be..." Pit stared at her with worry. "You've been harming yourself just to make them."
(Y/n) was quick to ease his worries. "It's nothing like that...well just a little, but that's not the point. It's really not a problem. My feathers grow at an annoying fasy rate so sometimes I have to pluck them. I can even use the ones that fall out on their own." Pit still looked clearly bothered by the idea of her pulling her feathers out on a regular basis. "Oh come on, it isn't that bad..." (y/n) mumbled before stuffing the newly created relocation charms into her other pocket to keep the separate from the many others.
"You're doing all of this for my sake. Thank you, (y/n). It's hard to believe that you aren't an angel of light yourself," Pit suddenly said. (Y/n) turned around to face him only to see his admiring stare. "I'm glad I met you. You're really nice and you don't avoid me." Pit's smile of pure joy nearly killed her.
"If you keep smiling like that I'm going to die!" (y/n) thought as she turned away. "Pit, I haven't even known you for a full day. Avoiding you isn't exactly an option. Besides, I think you've missed enough of the world. You've got some catching up to do. Let's get going before it's too late. We've spent enough time talking here." She held her hand out to Pit and he walked over her to take it. When he did, she broke the relocation charm that would send them to the Labyrinth of Deceit. It had been a while since (y/n) had been to the maze, so she was definately surprised when she and Pit we suddenly falling when they arrived to the set location.
