Chapter 6
The moment she was gone, Pit called to his second self. "Other Pit...you there?" He preferred to speak to him aloud rather than in his head since he now viewed him as a person he couldn't see rather than a figment of his imagination. There was no answer from his second self. "Hey, other me, I know you're there. It's too late to act like you can't hear me. I know you can," Pit said with a pout.
"What do you want? I'm not in the mood to talk right now," his second self growled. His response was a little startling, but Pit was glad to hear him at least reply.
"Well...you're kind of the only one I can talk to now. I don't really know what to do, and you've been helping me ever since I found out you existed. Palutena told me not to listen to you, but she was also keeping things from me. I thought you might know something," Pit said as he returned to his second bowl of cereal. He hoped that his second self knew how to stop whatever was happening to him.
"Counting on me all of a sudden? Why? Don't you realize that I'll disappear once you stop whatever's happening to you? Maybe you didn't quite understand that while you were worrying about yourself." The thought had never even crossed Pit's mind until then. Once Pit was returned to normal, his other self wouldn't exist anymore.
"But...that's not fair. You don't seem bad even though that's what Palutena said you were. You shouldn't have to disappear," Pit reasoned. He had no idea why he thought this since his situation was literally putting his life against that of his other self's life.
"Well, I guess life just isn't fair. I'm surprised you hadn't already figured that out. It only makes sense though. I don't have any memories of the other times I showed up. The last thing I remember is from a few weeks ago. You didn't actually start hearing me until recently," his second self spoke. The symptoms had already started before then, so his words definately added up to what they already knew about their predicament.
"You did say that you wanted to find out who you are. I'll ask (y/n) to help us figure that out. She might be able to find a solution to all of this!" Pit exclaimed as he already began to imagine the perfect outcome.
"Everything doesn't turn out perfectly. Sacrifices have to be made. I just happen to be one of them. It's not like I have a purpose, so I'm okay with that. Your positivity has been driving me crazy lately anyway."
"It's not my fault that you're such a pessimist. I think you're just looking on the bad side of things on purpose. There's no way you can really be this dark and gloomy," Pit muttered. He ignored the salty comment he got in return as he finished his cereal. "I'm going to name you," he declared, standing up from his seat.
"Don't bother. I won't be around long enough for you to use whatever you come up with. I'd rather not get used to having a life knowing that it'll be taken away from me. Save your thoughts for when you actually need them," his other self said. Pit felt a stab of guilt at those words although it didn't get rid of his optimism.
"I'm naming you anyway. You have no choice but to deal with it. Since you're me, you would have my name. That won't work though. I already have my name. Uhh...maybe something else will work..." he said. He began to wander around (y/n)'s house as he thought of names. He could practically feel his other self's objection to the idea, but nothing was spoken to stop Pit from coming up with a name. The angel paced around the living room still thinking when he noticed one of his black feathers fall to the ground. "Oh, I know! I'll call you Dark Pit! It matches you," Pit decided after seeing the black feather float to the ground. He heard nothing in return from his newly named friend.
"Dark Pit? I know you're there. Don't ignore me..." Pit whined. He picked up the black feather and looked at it in worry as he waited for Dark Pit's response.
"I don't like it...but I don't hate it either." Pit grinned at those words. The first step was completed.
"Okay, Dark Pit. Now that you've got a name, you have to tell me about yourself. The only way to find out who you are is to ask questions, right? Palutena used to say that a problem must first be solved by asking a question," Pit stated. He immediately saddened when he realized that he was still using Palutena's wisdom. Perhaps everything she had said was not a lie, but Pit was certain that she had kept a lot from him.
"That goddess of yours knew more about me than I knew about myself. There's nothing for you to ask anyway. I don't know anything," Dark Pit muttered. Pit sighed and ploped onto the couch. They weren't going to get anywhere with this type of attitude, but at least Pit managed to give his other self a name.
"Dark Pit, if I disappear, will you make sure that (y/n) doesn't get sad?" Pit suddenly asked. He hadn't been trying to think about the high possibility that he could vanish, but the thought had still been lingering in a corner of his mind.
"Why? You just met her. She could be using you. Even if she was fighting against Palutena, how do you know her side is the right one?" Dark Pit reasoned.
"She saved my life. Palutena would still be lying to me if she hadn't shown up. She saved you too. She just doesn't know that yet. I'm not really sure what she's fighting for, but (y/n) seems like a nice angel...if she's even an angel. I've never seen an angel that can make their wings disappear. And she had these really cool powers or something. There was fire in her hand when she was in Palutena's temple. If she isn't on the right side, then it'll just be us left right? You don't want to do anything bad, right?" Pit ranted.
"Depends on your definition of bad. For now, I just want to disappear before I get too attached to living," Dark Pit said.
"Don't say that. You're not going to disappear. (Y/n) is going to find a way to save us both. You won't have to worry about disappearing. I'd be sad if you went away." He heard Dark Pit laugh at him.
"You don't even know me either. Do you really get this attached to everyone you meet? That habit will get you hurt one day," Dark Pit said. Pit pouted and huffed in slight annoyance.
"You're me. If you really think about it, we're related. I'm sure anyone would be sad if someone in their family died," Pit muttered.
"Familiy? Quit being ridiculous. I don't have one of those," Dark Pit said. They fell into an uncomfortable silence as both of them thought about one of their possible dooms. Pit was used to being by himself since most of the angels in Palutena's domain weren't too keen on being around him. Knowing what he knew now, Pit wondered if any of them knew that he was unaware of Palutena's true personality. The thought was only brief and was soon replaced. Dark Pit, this new version of him, was one of the closest Pit had to a friend.
"Hey...Dark Pit. When (y/n) saves us, what's the first thing you want to do?" Pit stared up at the ceiling as he asked this. "It would be your first time seeing the world, wouldn't it? What would you want to see first?"
For a moment, Pit assumed Dark Pit had ignored him. It wouldn't have been surprising if that had been the case. "I don't know. It's just like you said. I've never seen anything before."
"You're kind of nice when you're honest," Pit noted.
"Shut up. Don't go getting any ideas. I only answered you so you'd leave me alone. There was nothing nice about that," Dark Pit immediately denied.
"That isn't what I was talking about. You finally admitted that you want to live. I want you to live too, so I'm going to find a way to stop both of us from disappearing. I don't know what we'll do after that, but maybe something will work out. Maybe..." Pit explained. He was still trying to piece together how he would live out his life now that nearly everyone was his enemy. If Palutena found him, she'd erase his memory and Dark Pit would most likely die. Humans were no longer safe and would harm him if they knew he was an angel. He didn't quite understand why. And if Medusa found him, she'd probably put an end to him since he had been the one to free Palutena to begin with. (Y/n) and now Dark Pit were the only starts he had.
"Someone's outside," Dark Pit noted.
"How do you know? I don't hear anything," Pit muttered in confusion. How exactly did Dark Pit see things from wherever he was? It wasn't the first time his reversed self had noticed something that he didn't.
"You aren't paying attention. Whoever's out there already knocked on the door twice now," Dark Pit stated matter of factly. Yes, Pit's mind had been on other things, but he still found it hard to believe that he didn't notice someone knocking. "What are you doing?"
"I'm looking to see who it is," Pit simply replied. He had gone over to the door out of curiosity.
"No, you are not. That's literally the one thing you aren't supposed to do. Didn't you listen to that girl before she left?!" Now that it was mentioned, Pit did remember (y/n) saying something along the lines of not opening windows or looking out doors.
Just before Pit could back away from the door, a certain angel returned having teleported in the middle of the living room. "I'm back!" (y/n) called. Her announcement scared Pit half to death and he gave a slight yelp to show it. (Y/n) turned around and tilted her head at him. "Pit what were you about to do...?" she half accused.
"Someone's outside," he mumbled as he stepped away from the door. (Y/n) immediately went on edge when he spoke those words.
"Get your weapon and hide behind the couch," she ordered. Oddly enough, Pit saw nothing wrong with taking orders from her and did just as she instructed. Then they heard it, the barely audible knock at the door. Once, twice, and a third time. Pit didn't understand why (y/n) was so anxious about a visitor until Dark Pit decided to speak up.
"She said humans don't show up here and animals stay away. Whatever is outside...can't be anything good," Dark Pit realized. He sounded uneased which once again made Pit briefly think of how he saw things.
The knocking returned, significantly louder this time. Once, twice, and many more than a third. (Y/n) had begun to soundlessly walk around her home turning off lights with a lit flame in her hand. Once all of the lights were off, she sat next to Pit behind the couch that faced the door and let her flame go out. It was still daytime, but the curtains over (y/n)'s closed windows made the house eerily dark which didn't help their situation.
"Did it hear you?" (y/n) whispered just loud enough to be heard. She didn't tell Pit what "it" was, but she seemed to be afraid of it. Not wanting to risk speaking too loudly, Pit shrugged his shoulders. When he did, the knocking turned into a violent thud nearly causing him to whimper in fright. (Y/n) had quickly put a hand over his mouth and placed one over her own as she closed her eyes and hoped for the danger to pass. For her to be such a powerful angel, it bothered Pit to see (y/n) terrified like this.
"You sEE me? YoOU SEE me?" The voice made Pit's blood run cold. It's pitch was uneven and it called for them knowing that they were there. It had heard him. That had to be the reason it was still there. For a moment, there was absolute silence. (Y/n) took her hands down to reach for something in her hoodie. The moment she pulled free a relocation charm, the door cried out with a crack as it splintered from the weight of its outside attacker. Amazingly, the door was still somewhat intact, but it wouldn't hold for very long.
Pit didn't really think before he acted. He just gathered (y/n) into his arms and carried her with him as he rushed upstairs as quickly and quietly as possible. He wasn't sure which room to go into but there was only one that was open. Once he'd gone into the open door, he realized that it was (y/n)'s room, but he hoped she didn't mind him being there at the moment. Pit set her down and turned towards the door ready to defend (y/n) from the enemy that had just entered the home downstairs.
Instead of having to fight, (y/n) closed the door not making a single sound. She pointed at a somewhat large bag in the corner of her room before rushing over to grab handfuls of relocation charms that were in a pullout contraption that Pit wasn't familiar with.
"Hey, focus! She wants you to get the bag!" Dark Pit snapped. Pit surely snapped out of it when he heard that voice again.
"SEe Meee? You sEE me?" The bag was in his free hand and he held the Palutena Bow tightly in the other. (Y/n) took hold of his arm and snapped a relocation charm just as a thud sounded from the closed door. They were instantly transported to an area in the wilderness. Pit had seen Palutena's gardens before, but this was a different type of sight. It was a garden, but it was on a level of beauty that he hadn't seen in a long time.
The emerald colored plants and lush grass calmed his racing heart as he took in the multicolored crystals and abundant fruit trees. "I...I know we probably almost just died, but this place is so pretty." Pit just couldn't help but express his thoughts.
"Way to go, idiot. You just ruined the mood. Can't you see that she's upset?" Dark Pit's words promted Pit to actually take a look at (y/n) rather than the garden they stood in. She still had her hand fixed around his arm while she stared at the grass with tear lined eyes.
"Hey, are you okay?" Pit asked. He immediately got backlash from his counterpart.
"Of course she isn't! Put the bag down and do something sappy to make her feel better or something!" Pit had half the mind to do just as Dark Pit had spoken, but he decided to just start with putting down the bag and waiting a moment. His decision paid off when (y/n) gave a sigh and let him go.
"I'm sorry. I didn't expect that. I'm usually not afraid of anything in this world, but even I am no match for a Divine Orne. I don't understand how it got into the mortal world, but it won't be able to easily return to the Underworld for a while," (y/n) explained.
"We're in the Underworld right now?!" Technically, the Underworld was still a territory full of his enemies. Speaking of enemies, (y/n) had mentioned a specifically terrifying one. "...wait, you said Divine Orne. I know what an Orne is, but what kind of monster is a Divine Orne that it's worse than a regular one?! All a regular one has to do is touch you and boom, you're dead!" Pit made expressive hand gestures to emphasize his point. He could practically sense Dark Pit's disappointment.
"A Divine Orne is a hunter that goes after whatever prey it hears. They can't see, but they can hear very well and still kill you with a single touch. Not just that, but they can also speak. Usually they repeat whatever the last words of their previous victim was. I've only seen that Divine Orne one other time. It sure did show up at a bad time too," (y/n) explained. She seemed much better now, which was a relief to Pit.
"Well it was a good thing you got back home when you did. I would have been finished." Pit saw her eyes light up in realization. (Y/n) grinned at him.
"I'm glad you reminded me," she happily spoke.
"I'm not sure what of, but you sure do look less scared now. Much happier for sure," Pit muttered with a brief scratch of his head.
"I'd ask if you were an idiot, but I already know the answer. You do realize that you weren't supposed to say that, right?" Dark Pit deadpanned except Pit couldn't see his plain expression and could only hear how monotonous his voice was.
"Right. Um, I found you a cure already. All I had to do was ask Asclepius," (y/n) said to change the subject back to her discovery.
"Who is Asclepius?" The name didn't ring any bells and Pit didn't remember fighting an Asclepius among Medusa's forces when he went to rescue Palutena. Palutena herself had never even mentioned such a name.
"Long story, tell you later. Now the bad part is that we'll be risking our lives, but the good part is that it's garunteed to work. You'll get the other you separated from yourself, and we can take him down before he does any harm," (y/n) said. Pit immediately began shaking his head at her.
"Before you say anything else...there's something important that I have to tell you."
