Chapter 5
He was the most ignorant angel she'd ever met, yet he couldn't be blamed for his lack of knowledge. He had been sheltered far too much, and now the world was a dangerous place for him to be.
"But why? I thought the humans loved angels? It doesn't make sense for them to harm us," Pit wondered. So far, (y/n) had been able to successfully get him to understand what a city was and how technology worked. He quickly figured out the concept of Wi-Fi since he claimed Palutena had once mentioned something about the humans always causing problems with their signals interfering with the heavens.
"People aren't the same as they used to be. They'd lock us up somewhere or even kill us if we were to be seen as what we really are. I'm lucky since my wings can disappear, but you'll need to hide your wings if you ever need to go into the city with me," (y/n) explained. They sat on her black leather couch as (y/n) did her best to tell Pit the rules of living down with the humans.
"Why would they do that though? Aren't humans supposed to be good?" Pit inquired. He still didn't seem to understand.
"Did Palutena tell you that or is that something you decided for yourself?" The question was perhaps a bit harsh, but (y/n) needed Pit to understand that he could be killed if he were to go out alone as he was. He couldn't just fly over the city or walk around with his wings exposed. Not that he could fly anyway. Either way, Seattle wasn't the type of city to allow such things. "I just don't want you to get hurt, okay. I'm the one that took you from your home, so I'm responsible for you. Understand?"
Pit nodded although he didn't seem like he accepted the fact that he wouldn't really be able to leave the house without covering his wings. Unluckily for him, summer had just ended, so it wasn't quite the time for him to be wearing a coat outside. Coats were the best option to go for when covering an angel's wings. (Y/n) knew this from experience. Pit would be stuck inside for nearly another season. It usually rained often, so Pit would likely be cooped up inside regardless.
"(Y/n)...are you okay? You kind of zoned out," Pit muttered with his head slightly tilted in curiousity. "I'll make sure to stay inside if that's what you're worried about. I'd prefer not to be shot any time soon." A feeling of unease settled in her as (y/n) realized that Pit likely didn't know that bullets even existed.
"Yeah, you definately don't want to be shot," (y/n) said with a nervous laugh. Hopefully, she could actually keep him from ever finding out what a bullet was. That was certainly something he didn't need to know for the time being. "Anyway, those are basically my rules. No leaving without me, no going into the forest without me, and do not go in my room under any circumstances. Anything else is allowed so long as it doesn't involve Palutena or any sort of betrayal," (y/n) reiterated. Again Pit nodded. This time he was in full agreeance.
(Y/n) was glad that he was okay with his current shelter. She would find a safer place for him later on, but for now, her own home would have to work. "How often will you be leaving?" Pit suddenly asked. (Y/n) hadn't mentioned her obligation to leave whenever Medusa called for her, so the question surprised her.
"Not too often. I'm not ususally needed unless the situation is very serious. I do need to report for minor things every now and then, but there's no need to worry. Um...why did you ask that all of a sudden?" Pit shook his head at her to dismiss her inquiry.
"It's nothing. I only guessed you were going to leave a lot since you gave me a set of rules to follow. Lady Palutena did that since she wasn't really around all the time. She was always busy with important stuff, so she let me go do things on my own so long as I stayed within her domain," Pit explained. (Y/n) found it saddening that he still viewed her as his caretaker despite having just learned the truth. Such was inevitable of course. Pit wouldn't just change overnight, and it hadn't even been an entire day since he confirmed Palutena's true nature.
"Are you hungry? I doubt you've eaten anything all morning. I did tell you not to touch the fridge until I came back, so I'm sure you must be curious about what's in it." (Y/n) immediately got up from the couch and headed towards the kitchen without bothering to wait on Pit. She wanted to change the subject without giving him the opportunity to object.
"Just about anything would be great right about now," Pit admitted wtih a smile. He watched her disappear into the kitchen before deciding to follow. (Y/n) had already began looking through her fridge for food when he'd arrived.
"Is there anything in particular that you want? And no, you can't have any ice cream right now. Too much of that stuff isn't healthy for humans or angels," (y/n) spoke as she rummaged through her stash of food. Pit didn't answer and (y/n) looked back at him to see that he had been staring at her back.
"Pit, my wings are going to come back. I'm just wearing a hoodie right now. I can't have my wings out and wear one at the same time without cutting holes in it," she spoke. She only guessed Pit was wondering about her wings.
"It's different. What is it made out of?" he asked. He was quite intrigued by the supposedly foreign form of apparel.
"I think this one is mostly made out of cotton. Not really sure myself to be honest. If you like it so much, I can go buy you one, but you'll have to cut holes in it. That's the only way it'll fit," (y/n) said as she just decided on giving him cereal. He watched her as she got the milk, closed the fridge, and retrieved the box of cereal.
"Are there other things like hoodies? It looks confortable. Are all human clothes like that now?" Pit wondered as (y/n) fixed his bowl of cereal.
"There are other things like hoodies, but I wouldn't say that all human clothes are comfortable. Maybe I should just buy you a whole wardrobe to wear. You probably can't fit any of my clothes, and we definately can't have you walking around in that," (y/n) said. There was nothing wrong with his robes of white, but he'd need to adapt if he wanted to blend in. She gave Pit the bowl of cereal before she began thinking about what his preferences in modern clothes might be. There was no way she would guess at his clothing size. Figuring that out might make things uncomfortable for the both of them.
"I might have to let him go out anyway. I can't take him to the underworld, and going back to Palutena's domain is too risky," she thought. That was really her only major problem. If she were to take care of this angel, she'd need to cover his basic necessities which she had so far. Clothing was one of the last things he needed to be fully supported.
"(Y/n)...is there more of this?" Pit asked. His voice was quiet and he seemed as if he didn't want to ask in the first place. He either really liked the cereal or had gone too long without eating. Either way, (y/n) was glad that he was eating.
"Yeah, of course there is. You can have as much as you want," she answered. She simply handed Pit the box of cereal and hoped he at least knew how to prepare another bowl for himself. "I'll show you how to use the T.V. once you're done," (y/n) added as she retrieved the milk from the fridge. When she turned back around, she froze and stared at Pit who also froze in confusion. He was unable to see what she saw, but he must have had an idea of what it was since he also took a look at the wing (y/n) was staring at. The black feather that she spotted was definitely Pit's without a doubt.
"You're...turning?" (y/n) spoke.
She put the milk carton down and immediately went to Pit's side, pulling at his wing and finding several more black feathers littering his normal pure white. Pit remained still allowing her to examine his wing although he held a look of shame.
"I don't really know what it is. Lady Palutena mentioned it before I left and my other self...uhh..." Pit said but he trailed off once he mention his supposed second self.
(Y/n) met his gaze seeing the fear and uncertainty in his eyes just before she purposely pulled one of the black feathers. He immediately yelped in pain and pulled his wing out of her hold. "That hurt," he whinned. They really were his feathers.
"I'm sorry. I had to be sure...but this isn't good. You're actually turning. I've never seen it happen like this before. Usually Palutena would take an angel's light. Then, all of their feathers would lose their color almost instantly. You're feathers are changing color one by one. Something isn't right," (y/n) explained as she reached out to touch his wings again. Pit pulled them out of her reach likely not wanting her to pluck any more of his feathers.
"Palutena told me that this has happened to me before. I don't know what it is or how to stop it. All I know is that she said I was turning into another version of me because I had been holding back everyrhing bad...or something like that. I really don't understand it, but I saw him in my reflection once. I know he's real. It sounds crazy, but I don't even know what to believe anymore. This isn't anything worse than Lady Palutena not being who I thought she was though," Pit said. (Y/n) had been listening to him, yet her mind had gone off to revisit her own past with Palutena.
"You can hear him in your head can't you," she said. Pit looked at her in shock.
"How did you know?" he asked. (Y/n) sensed his fear rising and he had every right to be afraid. He had no idea what was about to happen to him.
"Calm down. I'm not going to harm you. I only know because Palutena told me. She and I used to be on the same side until I found out about her like you just recently did. Before she even met you, I was one of her angels and she warned me about your condition. It's worse than turning. Turning let's you stay the same, but this...this is much worse," (y/n) said. "The first step is the thoughts. You'll start thinking the opposite of some of your strongest thoughts of good." (Y/n) remembered Palutena saying those words.
"What do you mean it's worse than turning. I really don't know what turning is," Pit said. His fear level remained high and his anxiety was increasing as well.
"That voice you're hearing is the other you. If this keeps up, he will become you and unless he is removed, you'll turn into him and stay that way forever. You won't even exist," (y/n) said. When Palutena had first explained it to the angels of the highest authority in her domain, (y/n) hadn't believed her. It was only after she witnessed it for herself that she believed in what was likely the only truth Palutena ever told her.
"You can stop it right? There's a way to stop it right? Palutena said she could so there has to be a way," Pit spoke. It seemed like he was on the verge of a mental breakdown.
"If you go back, Palutena will probably erase your memories. You'll go back to being blind to who she really is. I know because she did it to the others. It's not the first time I've seen this happen. And the ones she couldn't fix..." (y/n) said. Palutena was a selfish and merciless goddess who disguised herself as what humans might call a saint. (Y/n) wouldn't want Pit to go back to her unless there was no other option.
"Then what do you want me to do? I don't want to go back knowing that I won't even know what my world is really like, but I don't want to die either," Pit said.
"You aren't going to die. That's not what this thing does. It won't kill you," (y/n) said. Pit shook his head at her, rejecting her statements. Of course, (y/n) had only said those things to calm him down, but he was technically right. If his other self were to take over, Pit himself would cease to exist therefore making him dead.
"I'm going to fix you. I don't know how, but I have to try. I don't want to see this happen to anyone else again, and I don't want you to disappear either." (Y/n) meant every word of it. She had brought Pit there to save him, and she intended to do just that even if it meant she had to ask for help. "There's someone I need to speak to. The day isn't over yet, and you seem like you need time to think. Just be a little more patient with me, and I'll get all the answers I can find."
"You're leaving again," Pit noted. He seemed disappointed or maybe even upset.
"I don't have a choice. The longer I wait, the less time we have at finding you a cure. Plus, I'd like for you to be in good health before I show you around Seattle. It's a cool city. I'm sure you'd like it. For now, just hang here until I get back, okay. Try not to get into any trouble and don't open any doors or look out any windows no matter what," (y/n) informed. Pit's gloomy mood didn't change, but he no longer seemed to have a problem with her leaving anymore.
"And if you don't come back?" Pit asked. He seemed genuinely worried about that particular possibility.
"I will come back. I wouldn't even think of abandoning you, and I won't die either. Nothing can kill me, not even a goddess. I promise you that. Besides, I'm not going anywhere dangerous just yet," (y/n) said. She flashed Pit a smile before heading out with her hoodie still on and wings still dormant. Pit was counting on her, and she was counting on him as well. He didn't know it, but he was the only other angel that wasn't entriely convinced that one side was the true side to fight for. If Pit were to disappear, (y/n) would truly be alone as the single outlier in viewpoints.
