Chapter 18

Getting to the train that would take them to Fujinomiya, Japan was one of the most annoying experiences that Dark Pit ever had in his entire life. He hadn't been living for very long, so there was still the chance to experience something worse.

Walking through Tokyo Station and keeping up with (y/n) and Pit without getting lost in the crowd had been Dark Pit's first interaction with humans. Although the words they spoke were different than the angelic language he knew, Dark Pit was able to naturally understand them. Some of the humans walked up to them to ask about their wings. Each time, (y/n) answered their questions and explained things to where no one thought anything more of it. The amount of stares they got had been far too many for Dark Pit's liking, but he realized that (y/n) had been correct.

The people all thought that they were dressed up and that their wings were fake. If anyone had actually suspected them to be real angels, no one made it known. There were even some within the crowd that found them outright strange or weird and avoided them entirely.

The only thing they had to hide were Asclepius' snakes. (Y/n) had sent Pit and Dark Pit to the men's bathroom while she made a quick trip to a store. She was surprisingly quick and returned with a change of clothes for both Pit and Dark Pit. She was able to safely keep the snakes hidden in the emergency bag that she had been carrying, leaving it slightly unzipped so that the snakes could breathe. Dark Pit wasn't familiar with human customs, but he was pretty sure that snakes weren't allowed on trains. Perhaps the fact that he and Pit had their wings out served as enough distraction.

At the moment, the three of them were riding on the bullet train that would take them to Fujinomiya. Due to seating arrangements being limited, Pit and Dark Pit sat next to one another on one side of the train while (y/n) sat on the other side on the same row. A stranger was next to her. Dark Pit wouldn't have found the seating arrangement so bad if Pit hadn't fallen asleep on his shoulder.

Shortly after the train began to move, Pit clocked out and hadn't hesitated to use his sibling as a pillow. Dark Pit fought hard not to wake the obnoxious angel from his shoulder. With only half of the travel time left to go, Dark Pit briefly closed his eyes in an attempt to act like he wasn't bothered at all. The time would pass, and Pit would be off of him soon enough.

It only took one glance over in (y/n)'s direction to see her looking over at him and Pit. When Dark Pit caught her gaze, he quickly looked away with a frown. He didn't know what to make of her. The most he knew was that (y/n) was supposedly Pit's ally and that Pit was extremely nice to her. He didn't like the fact that (y/n) was hiding information from them, but he couldn't bring himself to mention it again since he also had hidden information of his own. At the very least, he appreciated the fact that she helped keep him and Pit alive, but he had no plans to tell her. So far, he had been able to keep such things to himself.

He didn't even realize when it had happened. In fact, Dark Pit didn't even remember falling asleep at all. He just woke up to Pit trying to get his attention. The two sleepy angels quietly followed after (y/n) who guided them off the train. The trip took them just over an hour. Dark Pit felt that it might have actually been faster to take the train than fly, so had taken a liking to trains. This one at least.

"Did you two have a nice nap? Seemed like you both needed the rest," (y/n) asked them through her mysterious telepathic link. Dark Pit had almost forgotten that she could do that. Regardless, Dark Pit declined to answer while Pit merely gave a slow nod.

Pit reached out to hold on to (y/n)'s sleeve while she led them all towards a less crowded space. He seemed just as surprised at their surroundings as Dark Pit was. If they weren't currently on a mission to save the world, they might have been able to enjoy the new sights. Pit had been suck in Skyworld for a while, and Dark Pit had only recently come into existence.

"We need to get somewhere out of sight so just follow me."

"Can you not talk in my head. It's irritating."

He understood why she was doing so, but he wasn't in the mood to hear any other voices at moment. Much less one that was sent directly into his head.

"You don't have the luxury to be picky right now. I can't say any of this out loud. I don't know who might be listening."

"They wouldn't have to listen. We have our wings out. Might as well just put a target on our faces and call it a day," Dark Pit scoffed.

"My mother doesn't know where we are. It should be fine." Pit blinked in surprise at his own words. "I haven't called her that in a while..."

Dark Pit found it strange. "Why even call her that to begin with."

"Because that's what she was to me. She never liked when I called her that anyway, but sometimes it just happens. I've accidentally said it in front of her before. Never would have guess she would turn out the way she is. It's hard to believe she has always been like that instead of kind and...caring and..."

Pit's mood immediately tanked and Dark Pit felt a stab of guilt piercing through him. He tried to push the feeling aside, but that only seemed to make him feel worse.

They continued their journey to find a hotel to stay in, but no one wanted to say anything else. Their time on the train had served as a relatively peaceful time for them where they forgot their worries. Having to focus on the important things now after such a break was taking a tole on their will to keep going. If they didn't get Asclepius revived soon, they'd be facing some serious mental obstacles.

After they had been walking for a bit, (y/n) brought them to a hotel that she spotted. Dark Pit had no preference so he didn't care where they went so long as it was a place to be. Pit was still in too somber of a mood to care either way.

(Y/n) got them a room with two beds meaning someone was going to have to share. Dark Pit decided not to complain about it yet, but when the time came, he would most certainly put up a fuss about the sleeping arrangements. If he even decided to sleep at all. He was aware that angels didn't need as much rest as mortals, but it didn't change the fact that sleep did help restore energy and mental stability.

Once they got to the room, Pit sat on the edge of one'the beds while Dark Pit chose to lean against a wall. (Y/n) immediately pulled Asclepius' snakes out of her backpack and placed them on the floor.

"Don't worry, Asclepius. We'll get you back to normal soon. We're almost to the fountain," she said to the snakes as she watched them.

"So we're just going to come here to this hotel and waste time? When do we go to this volcano?" Dark Pit was particularly eager to have this whole conflict over with as soon as possible.

"Well, we've checked in to this hotel. That means we have somewhere to use as a temporary base. Now all that's left is for me to explain the plan." She looked over to Pit to make sure he was okay. Dark Pit glanced at him as well and could see that Pit's mood was improving.

"Let's hear what you've got. I don't have any ideas yet," Pit said.

(Y/n) made her wings appear on her back, a single pair remaining. Then, she plucked a feather right from one of the wings. Dark Pit felt himself shiver in discomfort at the very thought of having a feather pulled from the root of his wing. Seeing someone do it so casually didn't sit well with him. He watched her burn the feather in her hand until it turned into a relocation charm. Pit appeared to be used to this strange phenomenon, so Dark Pit didn't ask any questions.

"I'm going to go ahead to the fountain by myself. I'll bring Asclepius' snakes with me and then teleport back here as soon as he's revived."

"What? Why would you go alone??" Pit frowned, confused by her decision.

She pointed at Dark Pit and then back at Pit. "I need you two to stay here. If for whatever reason I don't come back, someone has to still stop Palutena. I don't know how dangerous it could be, but I'm used to fighting alone and covering my own bases."

"So we're a liability to you then. You could have just said that," Dark Pit scoffed.

"Actually, Pit probably has enough experience to go. You're the liability, if you want to be technical about this." (Y/n) looked dead at him. "But that isn't about either of your abilities. The faster this gets done, the faster we can stop Palutena. If I get Asclepius back while you two set up a plan to fight against Palutena, that means we'll be getting two things done at one time."

Pit shook his head at her. "I can't let you go alone. What if that thing comes after you again? The divine orne."

"I have this." She held up the newly created relocation charm and smiled in an attempt to reassure him. "I can return at any time. Plus, Asclepius is still technically with me. I'm not going alone." The snakes hissed at her comment and gathered around her feet.

Dark Pit didn't really care if she went alone. Her plan sounded logical to him, plus it would save him time in more ways than one. He just had one question.

"It's a pretty simple plan, but what's the catch? You can't expect us to sit around here and pretend to be tacticians while you go have all the fun. Sitting still may as well be a waste of time."

She sighed and raised her voice at him as she spoke. "Yeah, I expected you to say something like that. Look, you can either pretend to be a tactical genius or wait for the world to end! I have no idea what Palutena has been up to all this time! The fact that the world hasn't already ended is a miracle within itself! Please, just save your complaining for after we finish taking her down. Just cooperate, Dark Pit."

He fell silent and looked away from her. "Sorry..."

The apology shocked her and even himself, but Pit didn't seem too surprised. It was like that angel saw some sort of light in him. It was annoying.

"I...thanks. I shouldn't have snapped at you like that."

"Not your fault that I'm making things difficult." And he knew that he was. He just didn't know exactly why. He felt like it was just something he was supposed to do, just like when he was trapped in the mirror still. He had known that Pit was going to save him soon, but he still listened to it. He felt like he was just supposed to betray Pit like that. Remembering it had him scowling at his past self.

"Are you going to leave right away, (y/n)?"

Yet again, Pit spoke up to shift the conversation and mood. At the very least, Dark Pit appreciated when he did that.

"Yeah," (y/n) softly said with a sigh. "I want to get Asclepius back with us as soon as I can."

As she was speaking, Pit stood up and approached her. She slightly tilted her head in curiousity up until he hugged her. Dark Pit watched the somewhat awkward hug happen and rolled his eyes.

"Please come back safe, okay? I don't want anything bad to happen to you," Pit said while he hugged her.

(Y/n) gently rubbed his back just beneath his wings. "Nothing bad is going to happen to me, Pit. I'll be back as soon as I can."

"Even if something bad did happen to you, you've got the snakes," Dark Pit thought rather than saying out loud. "Hmph. He's only acting like that because you're a girl."

(Y/n) shot Dark Pit a look out of the corner of her eyes. "Behave until I get back, Dark Pit. You two have an important job to do while I'm gone so no slacking off. Got it?"

        "Whatever." He shrugged.

When (y/n) headed out to Mount Fuji, Dark Pit was left alone with his twin. The two of them hadn't truly been by themselves since being left at (y/n)'s house in Seattle. It felt a bit strange for him.

Pit turned to him and gave him a serious look. "Well, we have work to do. I know everything about Lady Palutena. I'll tell you everything, even the embarrassing things."
