Chapter 17
Just as soon as she turned to start searching the shelves, (y/n) felt a tug at her sleeve. She looked back to find that it was Pit trying to catch her attention. She hadn't heard him when he called her name.
"Can I try helping you instead?" He shrank back from her after he asked, hoping she wouldn't reject his help.
"Of course. I could use all the help I can get." The snakes hanging around her shoulders hissed in agreement. (Y/n) noticed that she wasn't as repulsed by them as she used to be. The more she thought about the snakes being Asclepius himself, the less she thought of them as snakes. She snapped herself from the thought to answer Pit's question.
"I'm looking for anything about Japan that mentions places where we could find an abyss. I doubt there's anything in here that will specifically say that, but any clues will be better than nothing."
Pit avoided her gaze. "Um...I'm not very good at...reading," he mumbled as he poked his index fingers together. "I can sort whatever you find though! Just tell me what it is, and I'll make neat stacks out of everything!" He held a twinkle of determination in those bright blue eyes of his.
"Shouldn't you be focused on recovering?" Dark Pit spoke up without lifting his face out of the book that he was attempting to read.
(Y/n) noticed that it was upside-down and almost said something about it, but she had other priorities. Pit's dark themed twin was not one of them.
"You almost just passed out after using the power of the...three whatevers," Dark Pit muttered with a puzzled expression on his face. It was blatantly clear that he was struggling to comprehend what he was looking at. Pit took notice but only smiled at the attempt rather than saying anything about it.
"The three sacred treasures. And I'm fine now." Pit stretched put his winds a bit and pointed at himself. "I just got a little tired. Nothing a little rest can't fix. We can all take naps after we find what we're looking for."
"No one has time for naps. The sooner this all gets done, the faster I can have some time to myself." Dark Pit frowned at the book again. (Y/n) was too busy researching to care too much about it, but Pit was starting to get a bit anxious from not doing anything. (Y/n) could tell from the way he was unconsciously bouncing where he stood. It was almost cute.
"I have a couple books here that I already checked, Pit. They didn't have anything useful in them, and I think they're on the wrong shelf. Can you put them over there on that empty table for me?"
Pit immediately turned around to face her. He flashed her a bright grin and quickly collected the few books she had set aside. Seeing him happy to just move around some books boosted her morale, and (y/n) just couldn't help but smile.
She and Pit continued to check through the various books on the shelf that they stood in front of, but they didn't make much progress in finding anything to give them clues. (Y/n) has assumed a simple hint would be easy to find among Asclepius' vast library. It was a little frustrating, but it was better than having to fight or run for their lives. Pit was starting to show signs of fatigue despite his good mood, so (y/n) hoped to find out some sort of information soon.
The sound of Dark Pit sighing in annoyance and setting aside the book he had been fake reading was a bit too loud for (y/n)'s liking. At some point he had figured out that the book had been upside down, but that hadn't helped Dark Pit's attempt to understand. The room had been relatively silent aside from the turning pages up until then.
"If you're done trying to read, then would you mind helping out? You can put the books back on the shelf that Pit set aside. There's enough room."
"I'm not helping you put books on a shelf. Besides, you said earlier that it wouldn't take long so, you should have already found what you needed by now."
(Y/n) stopped turning her page and looked behind her with a slight glare. Dark Pit met her gaze with an annoyed expression, unafraid of her.
"Is this it?" Pit spoke up. The pure hearted angel pointed at the page that (y/n) had turned to, diffusing the situation instantly.
(Y/n) gave her attention back to the page and saw that it was a tourist attraction. A picture showing people looking at a mountain of some sort was on the page. As (y/n) read the caption under the photo, she realized that this wasn't exactly a mountain.
"Yeah I think...this might actually be it. How did you know?" She looks at Pit with a bit of surprise. He had admitted to not being able to read well and the photo didn't exactly give anything away.
"Wait is it really?" Pit seemed more surprised than (y/n) herself. "I mean...yeah, that's gotta be it right?" He reaches up to awkwardly scratch the back of his head.
"It's Mount Fuji. Apparently, it's a popular tourist attraction that people visit a lot." (Y/n) points at the photo. "Demetrius said that the fountain is in an abyss that humans marvel at. Well, this isn't just any regular mountain. It's actually a volcano which means it's got to be the place we're looking for. A place where the humans marvel at the opening into the abyss. I think this location counts."
"A volcano...?" Pit seems to go pale at the mention of such a place. "You mean, the places with lava and hot stuff and...more lava??"
Dark Pit huffs in annoyance. "It's just lava. We know where to go now, so let's hurry up and get there."
(Y/n) shakes her head. "No, Pit has a point. We can't ignore the fact that it's still a volcano regardless of how inactive it is. Chances are, there's some sort of catch to reaching the fountain. We have the location, but we still need a solid plan."
Pit sighed in relief. In truth, (y/n) already had something of a plan, but she needed to make up a reason for Pit to get some proper rest. He was pretty good at hiding how tired he was from the three sacred treasures. Dark Pit was clearly trying to rush things, but (y/n) wasn't going to ignore the fact that Pit would likely keep pushing himself if no one stopped him.
"We'll go ahead and go to Japan. Establishing a base of operations is a good idea. I'm not sure where Pandora is, so we can't keep coming back here and expecting things to be safe. That divine orne is still tracking us too, so we'll need to keep moving to new locations often."
Pit and Dark Pit both shudder at the mention of the foul creature that could end them with just one touch.
"I don't like that thing. It gives me the creeps," Dark Pit muttered.
(Y/n) nodded in agreement. "Same here, but we can't kill it. Not yet at least. Once we get to Japan, you two will get some rest while I come up with a plan. Then we'll get to the fountain, revive Asclepius, and stop Palutena."
"You make it sound like stopping that crazy woman is going to be as simple as the other two things." A frown formed on his face after Dark Pit spoke those words. For someone who hadn't been around for very long, he already seemed to hold such a serious grudge against the goddess of light.
"Trust me, I wish it was." (Y/n) closed the book and placed it back on the shelf. "At the very least, Asclepius will be able to help us even the playing field."
Her long time friend was not much of a fighter, but his knowledge was vast and his healing abilities alone would be able to provide irreplaceable support. The snakes hanging around (y/n)'s neck had been a bit quiet, so she was starting to worry about how Asclepius was faring.
"He's going to be okay, (y/n). We'll get him to the fountain." Pit placed a hand on her shoulder. (Y/n) blinked at him, not realizing that she had zoned out in concern. She appreciated Pit's attempt to cheer her, but she could see how much he was still hiding his exhaustion.
"Are we going or not?" Dark Pit stood from his seat and began to pace like a caged animal. (Y/n) didn't bother to say anything to him. She didn't feel like arguing in front of Pit knowing he'd try to stop them from fighting.
When the relocation charm for Japan was found, (y/n) double checked it to make sure it was the closest location she had.
"The nice thing about Japan is that we don't have to hide our wings as long as we don't move them to much." (Y/n) looked over to Pit and smiled. "If there's time after we stop Palutena, we can all go check out Akihabara or Shinjuku. We're going to need to get to Fujinomiya this time though, so I'm taking us to Tokyo so we can take a train."
"Fujinomiya? Is that the city name?" Pit quietly asked.
(Y/n) nodded in confirmation. "It's the closest city to Mount Fuji. Or at least that's what that book said. Either way, Tokyo is the closest I can get us. I have losts of locations saved but most of them are just generic places that I saved just in case I wanted to travel."
Dark Pit stopped pacing for a moment to speak up. "How come we don't have to hide our wings all of a sudden? You're always talking about how humans are dangerous or whatever, and now you're just taking that back? Doesn't make sense."
"Oh, that. In certain places in Japan, we can pass for cosplayers. No one will really care. We might get some questions, but I can easily answer them. Just don't let anyone touch your wings." Dark Pit frowned at her explaination, still not understanding it. "Basically Japan is an exception. Someone will think we're dressed up as some game characters or something before they suspect anything supernatural. As long as we're quick, we don't have to worry about it."
"Fine, whatever. I don't really care." Dark Pit crossed his arms and sighed. He probably still didn't quite understand, but (y/n) could tell that he wasn't about to ask for any further clarification.
"You two ready to go then? I can't think of anything that we need from here that we can't come back and get with Asclepius."
Pit didn't hesitate to take hold of her hand when she held it out. They waited on Dark Pit who only looked at them with disdain. For a moment, Pit and (y/n) stared back at him waiting.
"Is there really no other way to use those stupid things? Why do you have to touch me..."
(Y/n) rolled her eyes at his childish behavior. "It's just for a few seconds. Stop making such a big deal about it. You haven't been bothered by it before now."
Dark Pit crossed his arms at her claim. "How would you know? I've only been tolerating it."
"You're the main one rushing things despite sitting around and not helping, yet here you are being difficult over something as simple as this?"
Pit suddenly spoke up to stop them. "Please...can we just get going? I'd really prefer it if we didn't fight each other. We already have enough enemies as it is."
(Y/n) and Dark Pit both fell silent. Dark Pit reluctantly cooperated by going of to Pit and poking the angel's arm. It really was just that simple.
In no time at all, they were relocated to Japan. (Y/n) immediately felt a bit awkward once she realized that they were teleported into a bathroom stall. The three of them were uncomfortably packed into the small space.
"Well, this is great..." Dark Pit complained.
(Y/n) sighed and opened the door to the stall. The three of them flooded out of the little space and separated to get back their own preferred space. There were a couple of closed stalls, so luckily they ended up in an empty one. (Y/n) shuddered to think of the catastrophe they could have caused.
"Let's go. The sooner we get on the bullet train, the faster we get to our location," (y/n) whispered as she gestured towards the exit. From there, they would need to do their best to pass as normal. Pit in his borrowed casual wear, (y/n) in her hoodie, and Dark Pit in his dark colored robes.
Nope. They weren't suspicious at all.
