The basketball court was quiet except for the sound of Yejun's sneakers squeaking against the floor as he effortlessly moved around, the ball bouncing in rhythm with his movements. Nami sat on the bleachers, her legs dangling off the side, completely entranced by the way he played.
Yejun was good. Really good. His confidence and skill were impressive, and Nami found herself leaning forward, her eyes following every step he took, every spin of the ball. He dribbled past an imaginary defender with ease, before setting up to take a shot from the three-point line.
"Watch this," Yejun called over to her, his voice playful and confident. Nami just smiled, resting her chin on her hand, still captivated by his natural talent.
Yejun lined up the shot, taking a moment to glance at her, as if to say, This one's for you. He lifted the ball high above his head, focused intently, and then released it in a perfect arc toward the basket.
It was almost as if time slowed. Nami held her breath, eyes wide as she watched the ball sail through the air.
And then... clang. The ball hit the rim and bounced off, missing the basket completely.
Yejun, ever the good sport, ran his fingers through his hair with a dramatic sigh. "Ahh, I guess I dedicated that to you a little too early," he said, laughing at himself.
Nami couldn't help but giggle at the sight of him pretending to be upset, his usual cool confidence replaced with mock embarrassment. "That was supposed to be dedicated to me?" she teased, her smile soft but playful. "I guess I'm not that lucky after all."
Yejun jogged over to where she was sitting, his breath a little heavier from the exertion. "Alright, your turn," he said, offering her the ball with a grin. Nami blinked at him, a little taken aback. She hadn't planned on actually playing, but something about the way he was looking at her—so encouraging and easygoing—made her want to give it a shot. She took the ball from him, her fingers running over the smooth surface as she tried to shake off her nerves.
"Here goes nothing," she muttered, standing up and walking toward the court. Yejun gave her a thumbs-up, stepping back to let her take the spotlight. She dribbled the ball a couple of times, trying to look confident. As she looked at the hoop, the pressure hit her. She wasn't great at basketball, and she knew Yejun would be watching. But she couldn't back out now.
"I dedicate this shot to you, Yejunnie," she said, louder this time, her voice holding a playful seriousness as she lifted the ball. Yejun smiled softly from where he stood, clearly proud of her for giving it a try. "I believe in you," he called out.
With that, Nami took the shot. She felt her heart race as the ball sailed through the air, her eyes glued to it. For a split second, she thought it might actually go in. But then—clang. The ball bounced off the rim and fell to the side, just like Yejun's shot.
Nami froze, staring at the missed shot, and then looked back at him, cheeks flushed with a mix of embarrassment and laughter. "Well, that didn't go as planned," she said, laughing nervously. Yejun chuckled and jogged over to her, nudging her playfully with his shoulder. "You gave it your best shot," he said. "That's more than I can say for myself earlier."
Nami grinned up at him, feeling a wave of warmth from his easygoing attitude. "Alright, rematch next time, but you'll have to dedicate your next shot to me," she teased, handing the ball back to him. Yejun raised an eyebrow, his lips curling into a mischievous grin. "Deal. But next time, you've got to at least get one shot in."
She rolled her eyes, laughing as they both walked off the court. "One day, I'll make you proud," Nami said with a wink. Yejun smiled fondly at her, his tone softening. "You already do."
As they headed back to grab a drink, Nami felt a lightness in her chest. Even though the shot didn't go in, the moment with Yejun felt like a win.
