"Wait... You being for real man?" came Marshall's reply of disbelief. He ran a hand through his hair, his chocolate brown curls swirling between his fingers, "Connor, you have to leave all the joking to me..."
Connor sighed softly "Mars, you know I don't like to kid around a lot, so why would I start now? Of all days especially..." he replied, folding his arms across his chest.
"Oh I don't know... Maybe because that lady back there had a gun to our heads?" he was exaggerating, but Connor was not about to say anything about it. He glared at his friend.
"No... My father really is Spider-Man... I don't know how to prove it bu--"
"You're right," Marshall began, "You can't. All I have to go off of is your word. Look Connor, you're my best friend to the end of the world and all... But you are telling me that you are one of the Avenger's children? You do realizing that you are part of the most wanted list from you know who right? And that by merely associating with you I am in danger too right?"
Connor nods, "Yeah, why do you think I never told you the truth?" he stared his curly haired friend in the eye, and he then said "Come on, we need to get going from here before that lady finds me again..."
"'Again'? You mean this has happened to you before?"
"Of course... Child of Spider-Man remember?" the duo started to walk along the edge of the lake.
"So..." Marshall spoke up after a few minutes of ducking under various branches and climbing over logs, "Where are we even heading to? We can't go to the cave..." he told Connor softly as he kept walking around.
"I know of a place," Connor replied as he looked back to him, "I just don't know if she will be there..." he mumbled under his breath as he then said "My mother... Last I remember, lived on the other side of the forest. We go there and we can hang out for a while as this blows over." Connor put on a face of confidence, but his tone and internally he was unsure of this.
"You sound unsure..." he remarked softly as they soon reached a clearing in the forest, and Connor stopped walking, resulting in Marshall nearly walking into him.
"I am unsure because I have not seen my mother in nearly ten years..."
"Why is that?" he asked him softly, knowing that his mother was already a sensitive topic.
"That is not important, and we are burning daylight, let's go-- Wait a second," he held his arm out in front of him to stop any forward movement, "I don't remember this warehouse being here..."
"You memorized the forest?" Marshall raised an eyebrow in curiosity. Connor shook his head.
"Of course not..." he spoke as he pulled the web shooters from his jacket pockets and moved to put them onto his wrists, "I have just never paid attention to the forest whenever I go through it is all..." he remarked as he then said "I think we may have found a better place to lay low. We just have to explore the place to make sure we won't run into anything... Or anyone."ย
Marshall sighed, "Of course..." he told the younger male, and he then added "Just hide out in the random looking warehouse in the middle of the forest... Not raising any death flags or anything..."
Connor glared at him, "You want to get caught out here by a bounty hunter for you know who?" he reminded Marshall.
Marshall nodded his head "Fair point. Let's get out of the open." he told Connor, who nodded. They then walked over to the warehouse, where a regular sized metal door stood, with a single keypad.
Connor smirked, and moved to bring his backpack around, unzipping a pocket to pull out a set of tools, and he grabbed a flat head screwdriver as he then moved to unscrew the screws so he could remove the panel.
Once removed, Connor began to work, and he then moved to grab some pliers and wires as he slowly attached a small disk to the mainframe of the panel.
There was a ticking sound for a moment before a final click and Connor removed the disc, and he then saw a green light appear over the top of the door, and it opened with a soft hiss as he looked to Marshall.
"Let's go." he then stepped inside, Marshall following suit as he then took a few steps forward.
The door slid shut, and Marshall immediately walked over to the door to push his weight against it. He sighed "We are not leaving now... No backing out." he told Connor, who nodded.
"Good, I didn't intend to either way." came his quick response as he pulled out his flashlight, hitting the button as he then looked around with the area with the lighting.ย
The place was definitely abandoned, as if nobody had been in there for years, evident by the layer of dust on the exposed surfaces and cobwebs in the corners of the building.
Marshall pulled out his own flashlight as he let out a soft sigh, "Well at least we know nobody has been in here forย a while..." he nervously chuckled as he walked around, observing the many objects that were displayed on the table.
"You think?" Connor remarked sarcastically, "What gave that away? The cobwebs, or the thick layer of dust that is making my throat all itchy and stuff?" he remarked as he then coughed softly into his sleeve, where he stopped to pick up a small vial, which was filled withย "But seriously Mars what is this stuff?" the liquid in the vial he held was a light green, and was rather thin as he twirled it around a bit, and he then set it back down.
"Maybe something that is not meant to be messed with." he remarked as a drop of the foreign fluid fell from the lip of the vial, the substance colliding with the surface, and it immediately bubbled up as the fluid sizzled as it ate away at the surface.
Connor nods, suddenly grateful that he had set the vial down, "Yeah..." he remarked as his eyes fell upon a cream colored file marked with a single stamp-- The familiar, brightly colored carmine lettering of "CLASSIFIED", to which he picked it up.
He slowly began to skim the contents of the folder, walking in the direction of Marshall, who was only walking further into the building as he then remarked, "Well Connor, I think it is safe to say that this is a good place to stay for the night. What do you sa--"
"Yeah I don't think so." he told the male suddenly as he looked at the very visible, black stamp of a single skull with several tentacles swirling out of it. He turned the file to show him it. He then said "This is an old Hydra Base... Obviously abandoned a long time go, but I don't remember my dad saying anything about a base in the woods..."
"Well," began Marshall in a nervous voice, "We should not spend more than the night here then don't you agree?" he asked Connor as he traveled further down the ominous and dark corridors of the newly discovered Hydra base.
However, Connor kept reading the file he held, his attention all on it as he read about a single weapon they had kept, almost like an ongoing experiment of sorts when he shivered suddenly, the temperature dropping suddenly as he was able to see his breath.
"Hey Connor? Is it me," Marshall began, and he then looked up to his curly haired friend, "Or is it colder?"
"Oh it is definitely colder than normal." Connor affirmed as he then moved to fold the file and he then unzipped his backpack as he then moved to put the file away as he then looked to his wristwatch, the temperature reading 4 degrees Celsius. "We need to be quick in this end, we won't last long in here..." he told his male friend.
Marshall nodded, "I was thinking the exact same thing."ย
The duo spent a good ten minutes investigating the more frosty section of the base, to which Connor assumed that they were close to having to retreat to the more warmer parts of the secluded warehouse.
Connor was ready to call out to Marshall and suggest that they head back when he heard his curly haired friend ccall out to him.
"Hey Connor!" began his worried tone, "I think I found something! Come check it out! This is kind of freaky..." Marshall had begun to trail off, his voice seemingly filled with fear.
Connor walked over to him, and he then said "What is it Mars?" he inquired, fixing his coat as if it was going to preserve his body heat.
Marshall looked to the door in front of them, and he took in a sharp breath, "Well, we might be wrong about... Oh you know, everything." he then moved to press a button on the door, and it hissed softly, as if it were being depressurized, and the doors slid open, a bone-chilling, shiver-inducing cold gust of air rushed past them.
Marshall looked inside, and Connor slowly moved his flashlight inside. At first it seemed like nothing was in it, as if it were a walk in freezer at a restaurant. But soon, the circle of light fell upon a figure, who was kneeling and was chained to the ground, and Marshall flinched a bit before he realized that the figure was not moving.
The figure in question was rather slender and feminine looking, and was seemingly frozen, a layer of frost covered her still face and shoulders. Her hair was the color of honey with slightly darker, more mahogany highlights and undertones.
Connor looked to the frozen female as he then said, "She looks familiar..." he murmured.
"Really? Never seen her around." Marshall replied, and he then looked to Connor. He ran a hand through his curls, "You think that she is okay?"ย
Connor shifted his bag open to pull out the file, and he then opened it to look at the contents of the file. "Well I'll be dipped," he began, "This woman is actually an experiment that Hydra has. A bio-weapon of sorts, quite similar to what they did to the Winter Soldier all those years ago. Remember the Calvin Assassination Attempt in 2032?" he asked Marshall.
Mars nodded, "Why you ask?"
"Well... Because this file I swiped is filled with all the assassinations and attempts that she has done in the past century or so. She is the Silver Shadow."
"Should we let her go? Like unfreeze her?" Marshall suggested, and Connor thought for a bit.
"Maybe... But what if she is still under their control?" Connor offered, "Then we have a homicidal assassin free to kill us if she needs."
Marshall tapped his finger on a tablet that was attached to a stand and the screen lit up, "Well... It turns out they have not turned this thing on in nearly thirty years..." he told his younger friend.
"Well," began Connor, who kept skimming the file as he read some more, "The kind of brainwashing they used on the Silver Shadow is stronger, but it required frequent sessions... 'The prefrontal cortex's willpower in the Silver Shadow is too strong for the brainwashing to keep a hold on her, so frequent brainwashing sessions were administered on a weekly basis to keep her in a trance-like state'."
Marshall smiled, "So it is safe to say that she is okay to be released then?" he asked him.
Connor pursed his lips as he then said "I guess so. Is there an option to turn the machine off? It is freezing in here."
Marshall observed the machine as he then nodded, "I think so... My German is a rusty unlike yours. I may ne-- Oh wait no I got it." he told Connor.
The younger male nodded his head slowly as Marshall pressed the button on the screen, and there was a sharp hissing sound as the freezer slowly turned off, and the room had immediately felt warmer.
Marshall backed up slowly as he then stood next to Connor, whom of which said "It feels warmer already..." his friend nodded, and they then backed up as the chains began to get a bit more slack, and then...
Nothing.
"Huh," began Marshall, who walked up to the woman in question, "Maybe she is in an eternal sleep then." he shrugged as he then turned around to face Connor, hands on his hips as he then chuckled softly.
Connor nodded his head, his gaze still focused on the file in his hands. He was so focused that he did not notice that the female figure behind Marshall slowly was waking up, eyes opening.
He only noticed when Marshall yelped as he then called out to Connor "C-Connor! A little help?!"
He lifted his gaze as he then felt his eyes widen. The female had moved her wrists apart to break the cuffs, the metal snapping apart and clattering onto the stone cold floor, arms wrapping around Marshall's waist, lifting him about a foot off the ground as she stared into Connor's eyes.
"No more..." she seemed to growl to Connor, who held his hands up slowly as he then took a deep breath.
"Look miss," he began defensively, "We don't want to hurt you... You don't have to do any more harm..." Connor reassured her as he took a step forward to her, "Name's Christopher, but you can call me Connor," he told her soothingly, "What is your name miss?"
The female glared at him more as if she were calculating, and she slowly relaxed a bit as she then said "Elizabeth..." in a rather unsure manner, "But I have not been called that in a long time... What year is it?" she asked him.
Marshall looked to her as he then said "It is 2051 currently..." he groaned out, and the female's eyes widened as she let go, pushing him away. Marshall stumbled next to Connor before he regained his balance.
"N-No... They were supposed to wake me up after a month... N-Not that I am complaining or anything." she told them as she then looked to Connor.
"Yeah... Hydra fell three weeks after the botched assassination attempted on President Calvin."
"Who said I botched it?" she rose an eyebrow to them, and Connor furrowed his own.
"On purpose?" Marshall spoke up, "And just so we know, how long you been in there? In a frozen state?"
She looked to the curly haired male, and she then replied, "Well," she began, "I am constantly put in and out of a frozen state, but I know that this has been happening ever since Hydra found out about me in the early fifties. My father is a successful science experiment after all, the first super soldier."
Wait a second, Connor thought to himself, she did not mean--
" You wouldn't happen to know about Captain America would you?"
Well da-- "Not another one." came Marshall's sarcastic reply.
