5.Unexpected Consequences
Jieun and Yeongja were standing in the bustling corridor of Crown Lake Academy, surrounded by the chatter and laughter of their fellow students.
They had been arguing for a while now, their disagreement over room arrangements and personal preferences getting more and more heated with every passing moment.
Jieun's frustration was palpable as she gestured towards their shared dormitory and exclaimed, "You never consider anyone else's feelings! You broke my bird!! Do you even know how precious it was?! It's always about what you want!"
Yeongja countered with an enigmatic smirk, playfully tossing the entire bucket of popcorn towards Jieun. "Oh, come on! Your choices are so boring and uninspiring. I'm just trying to add some life!"
The popcorn flew through the air, landing on Jieun's clothes and the floor, aggravating her even more.
Reacting impulsively, Jieun grabbed a nearby saucer and aimed it at Yeongja in frustration.
However, Yeongja was quick to dodge the saucer, causing it to veer off unexpectedly and accidentally hit Miss. Choi, who was passing by caught the edge of the saucer in her eye.
Miss. Choi winced in surprise and discomfort, holding a hand to her eye. Both Jieun and Yeongja froze in place, exchanging wide-eyed and enigmatic glances, unsure of what to do next.
Miss. Kwon, the headmistress, who happened to be nearby, witnessed the unfortunate incident and intervened with a concerned furrow in her brow. "Jieun! Yeongja! My office, now!" she called out.
The girls followed the headmistress to her office, their hearts heavy with regret and worry over the unintentional harm caused to Miss. Choi.
They were waiting outside Miss. Kwon's office when, Yeongja stated irritably, "I don't even know why I'm here."
Jieun replied sarcastically, "Oh, please! You started it. I don't even know what's wrong with you?! You obviously have something against me. You even smashed my bird!"
Yeongja snarked in response, "I didn't smash your stupid bird!" "IT'S NOT STUPID!!" Jieun raised her voice at Yeongja.
Miss. Kwon then called them into her cabin. Inside the headmistress's office, the atmosphere was tense.
Jieun and Yeongja attempted to explain, their words filled with remorse and apologies for the unexpected turn of events. "Is Miss. Choi okay?" Jieun asked, feeling worried for Miss. Choi.
"Yes, Miss. Choi is fine. But what's not fine is your behaviour. As punishment, Saturday Detention at 6 AM. You may go, Miss. Min Yeongja, now."
Yeongja left feeling relieved "As for you, Miss. Hyun not a good sign getting in trouble your first weekend. You haven't made yourself invaluable in any way. Consider this as a warning. And I typically don't warn people more than once. Crown Lake isn't as easy as you think, try your best to survive or they might eliminate you!" Miss. Kwon warned Jieun, and she left. Jieun was feeling stressed right now.
Heeseung was quietly enjoying the drama unfolding in front of him, he was watching intently and a mischievous smirk appeared on his lips.
"Poor you, Jieun. I hope you survive until the end. Hah! How could you even get into trouble within a week?! It'll be hard for you to survive this place, and I'll make sure to do it!" He says to himself and leaves the spot.
Jieun went back to her classes and she was almost zoning out in all her classes. But someone's eyes caught Jieun's stressful behaviour.
Sunoo was wondering, "What must be bothering her this much that she's zoning out in almost all of the classes?" He thought to himself and reminded himself to ask her problem after the class was over.
Heeseung and Ni-ki were looking at Jieun laughing at her situation. Heeseung already told Ni-ki about the incident that happened a few classes ago, and he couldn't help but to laugh at her situation.
"How can she even get into trouble this early hyung? She looks smart, but I guess it's just her appearance. She's so dumb!!" they both started laughing looking at her while grinning.
"How can you be so naive Jieun? You have to be strong to suffer the upcoming challenges." Ni-ki giggled at himself.
After the classes were over Jieun was busy packing her belongings, Sunoo and Jungwon came up to her and asked her about the sudden change in her behaviour. "Are you okay Jieun? You were zoning out in almost all of the classes." Jungwon asked worriedly.
"Yeah, Won is right. Is something bothering you? Did you get into a problem? Do you want our help?" Sunoo asked her being the sunshine and helper he is. Jieun nodded her head and told them about the detention.
"So, you're telling us that you got into detention on the first week of you being here? That's kinda tough, I mean the detention. You can't even go out, you'll have to stay there for the whole day. I still remember Jay hyung's face after he came serving the detention, he was so tired. It was kinda funny to be honest how he even survived being there for the whole day. People literally passed out, there are also rumours that a girl committed suicided there." Jungwon explained to her.
Jieun was pacing back and forth in the classroom of Crown Lake Academy, feeling frustrated and uneasy. "There's no way I'm going to spend the whole day with that bitch in detention!" she muttered looking at the ground. She turned to Sunoo and Jungwon, who were standing next to her. "By the way, how did Jay even get into detention? He doesn't seem like a troublemaker at all," she asked curiously.
Sunoo and Jungwon exchanged a knowing glance, and Sunoo spoke up. "That's a whole different story, Jieun. We'll explain it to you someday," he said cryptically. With that, both of them left the classroom, leaving Jieun perplexed and frustrated.
As she walked towards her dorm, Jieun couldn't help but wonder what Jay had done to get himself into detention. "Did he hurt someone?" she thought to herself. The whole thing seemed so mysterious and confusing.
Later that night, Jieun lay on her bed in the shared dorm room, trying to relax and forget about the day's events. Suddenly, she remembered the words Heather had written in the book: "At Crown Lake, dirt gives you power, so go find some. Write it on the Tattle wall on the basement stairs to Crown Dorm. Be sure to use red ink."
Feeling daring and impulsive, Jieun made her way down to the basement and found the Tattle Wall. She took out a red marker and wrote "Sunghoon likes Miss. Kim" on the wall. Satisfied with her handiwork, she quickly left the basement and went back to her dorm.
Unbeknownst to her, Jake had been watching her every move. He sighed heavily as he looked at the Tattle Wall. "You won't be getting away with this, Jieun," he muttered to himself. With that, he left the basement, feeling frustrated and angry.
It was the next day. Sunghoon was sitting in the library working on his poem when he overheard some guys gossiping about him "Sunghoon likes Ms.Kim? I can't believe a woman like her would go out with a guy like him." The students were talking amongst each other and were laughing. Sunghoon was angry and he just left the room.
Unbeknownst to him, Jieun was also sitting in the library listening to the gossip. After Sunghoon went out, Jieun followed him to see what he was up to, then she saw him going into Miss. Kim's office. She heard giggling noises and peeked through the door. What she saw next made her feel guilty about her actions.
She saw Sunghoon setting up the mic while Miss. Kim and Mr. Boo helping him out. "So, did you review the tape? I think we did a pretty good job yesterday," Mr. Boo asked. "Yeah, I did. And it sounds amazing! Thanks so much for helping out Miss. Kim and Mr Boo." Sunghoon replied smiling and looking at them.
"Your poems are awesome and heartfelt, you have nothing to be nervous about. You can do this! I'm really excited for the upcoming event." Miss. Kim replied. Jieun felt a rush of guilt inside her and she quickly ran towards the basement.
She was removing the writing by applying white paint to it, "You think I like Ms. Kim?" Sunghoon asked furiously standing behind her. "I saw you leave her office, twice." she replied nervously, "So, instead of asking me about this you wrote it on the tattle wall?" he asked raging with anger. "Sorry, I wasn't thinking," she said feeling remorseful of her actions.
"Mr. Boo and I both have an interest in poetry, there's an open mic night coming up in town, and we're working on our performances. And Miss. Kim is helping us record it!" he said. "You're a poet?" she asked curiously, "Trying, I thought you were different Jieun." He was disappointed in her, he was about to leave when Jieun held his hand stopping him, "Sunghoon please, I'm so sorry. I know I was being a jerk but please forgive me, I won't do that again. See, all gone" she apologized to him sincerely.
"If you think this is your way to get free tickets to my act, you're mistaken," he said smiling towards her. "I think you're not a complete jerk. I told you I was good at reading people. You can't just blindly follow the rules, you're your own person and you have to remain the same person while you're at Crown Lake, Jieun." he said calming down a little, "Thanks for forgiving me Sunghoon." she said looking at him in the eyes. He reached into his bag and handed her the pudding "I don't know why is it a rule to not eat this. It's delicious trust me" he said giving it to her and they both went out from the basement.
