you may be wondering: no middle or surname? such questions will be answered in a brief backstory.

it's a short name in its own right and so there isn't much you can pull from it. there's also the option of pet names, but with mako, such things would usually be 'gremlin,' or 'my little b####boy,' etc etc. the affectionate stuff, you know?

he's not too sure, himself, but it seems to be around 15 or 16. he takes his birthday to be august 2nd, because that was the day he washed up to the camp (more on that in backstory)

mnemosyne, titaness/goddess of memories

there's a whole host of ways you could describe mako. you could call him chaotic neutral, a loose cannon, a prankster, annoying, a total goblin- the list goes on. the most important thing to know, though, is that mako definitely has a mischievous streak. there are lots of words, but the one word that would sum him up pretty well? youthful. mako is very much someone who lives in the present. if he has much regard for consequences, it doesn't show. considering that his mother is the goddess of records and memory and keeping history, it's kind of ironic how little mako seems to take note of such things; they say history is doomed to repeat itself unless you learn from it. judging by how many times mako has gotten in trouble and had to clean the kitchen by himself, he hasn't learnt much from history.

he's loud and laughs a lot. you'll rarely see mako without a smile. and if he's not smiling, he's probably biting one back so as to not give away the fact that he's left chocolate jimmies (cupcake sprinkles) all over the dining hall, or left melted chocolate in somebody's bed. you can always expect something from mako. senseless mischief seems to be what he lives for. oftentimes it seems impossible to discern what mako thinks he can gain from constant shouting and tomfoolery. but the answer is very plain and very simple: attention.

he doesn't have a home to go back to during the school year. he doesn't have parents or siblings that he knows of to dote on him, not even on the godly side. once you realise how alone mako is, it becomes very easy to see that he has one basic thing that drives him: the need to be seen. he's loud so that he can be heard. he makes mischief because it's how he gets acknowledged.

so. yeah. he's a lonely b####boy.

that isn't to say his playful personality is a facade, though; on the contrary, it's all very real. mako genuinely loves to laugh, and his zest for life and living and talking goes unparalleled. it isn't difficult to make friends with mako at all. if you can get past the shoutiness and mischievous humour (and bad jokes), he's actually? a pretty sweet guy? he likes being doted on and can and will act cute around his close friends for this purpose. it's kinda funny, though; he can go from uwus to peak gremlin energy at the tip of a hat. unpredictability is part of mako's nature.

maybe unstable is another word you could use to describe mako. most people have childhoods in which their parents might've instilled core values into their children. most people learn their identity and what kind of person they want to be. mako's still figuring that out. if he had such a childhood, he doesn't remember (and the fact that he doesn't makes him wonder if he would even want to remember). point is, he doesn't know what his ideals are.

mako doesn't remember where he came from. it's ironic, kind of, how he - who can influence memories - would have so little of his own. but he's thought about it and has reached the conclusion that he must've had a bad past that he wanted to forget, so he made himself forget. which is part of the truth, anyway...

it's complicated and you guys don't get to know the full story, but basically he was on the run for a long time. his father told him to run for his life, so mako ran across long island. he was being chased by something, or several somethings. he could hardly breath, he was crying so much. all he could see was his father's mangled body being shredded in the maw of a beast.

he found a safe beach, where he collapsed in a heap of emotions and shaking. it was the dead of night, and the waved lapped at his heels. mako looked up to the sky. he remembered what his father said. he remembered the words: "your mom was a lady to remember" and he remembered the explanation of his nature as a demigod. mako remembered his father being torn to pieces before his eyes just a few minutes after.

he didn't want to remember anymore. mnemosyne, his mother's name was. he cried out to her, begging for his pain to be gone, for the memories to go away. they went away.

campers found him on the beach the following morning. mako could only tell them that his name was mako and he was the son of mnemosyne. without much else to do about it, he was moved to the hermes cabin (since there's a bit of a lack in mnemosyne children). he stays at the camp year-round, now.

celestial bronze rapier ; surprisingly elegant for someone as chaotic as mako, he commands excellent control over his rapier (which you'll sometimes catch him calling mackarel). in another life, before he had a whole memory wipe, mako was a competitive fencer; luckily, the muscle memory is still there ⸻ nunchuks ; because i can!! he uses nunchuks, fight me ⸻ trap type things ; he might not be a son of hephaestus, but mako knows how to fashion things like stink bombs and your basic prank gear; this translates quite well to fashioning traps for people and monsters, too.

| 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 ;

memory access ; naturally, since the rest of his powers deal in messing with other people's memories, mako can view other people's memories. sometimes it's visual and he can see it like a video, but other memories are more about the vibes. he can do this from a short distance, about ten to fifteen feet depending on the memory's length and any emotions attached to it ⸻ memory alteration ; with a few minutes and physical contact, mako can alter other people's memories. think frozen, when the trolls changed anna's memories. they have to stay fundamentally the same, the same events happening; mako can just change the details and mood, the little things. he does this for some of the campers who have traumatic memories to soften the pain a little. he can also do this on himself, but it's very dangerous and very difficult to control ⸻ memory removal ; this is something he tries to avoid. mako needs direct contact with his target's head, and ten to fifteen minutes to remove memories entirely. it leaves him unconscious for a day at most, depending on the emotional depth and the length of the memories he removed ⸻ memory generation ; similar to memory removal, it takes a whole lot out of mako and a lot of time to do, and leaves him unconscious at best. the memories he can generate usually have to be fed from his own memories, or his target's preexisting memories (in other words, he can't just fashion something out of the blue). the generated memories will often seem a little wack, imperfect, and are usually quite short.
