065; A NIGHT TO REMEMBER

! BAD GIRLS ! BAD GIRLS !

( a sex and the city fic )

JAMIE AND DUNCAN'S SHARED BROWNSTONE
new york, new york
7:15pm

i stood in front of the mirror as charlotte carefully adjusted the delicate straps of my prada dress.

"you look stunning," charlotte declared, stepping back to admire her handiwork. "like a movie star from the golden age of hollywood."

i turned slightly, eyeing my reflection. the yellow silk dress draped effortlessly, the low back exposing just enough skin to make me feel elegant yet subtly seductive. it wasn't too much, but it made a statement, one that duncan would definitely hear loud and clear.

"she looks like the kind of woman men ruin their lives for," samantha added, lounging on the chaise with a glass of champagne in hand.

miranda, perched on the bed, smirked. "which, to be fair, is exactly the energy she should be bringing into her first date night as a married woman."

carrie was focused on fastening my earrings, adjusting them until they were just right. "i still can't believe you're a married woman. you! jamie boyd! what happened to i don't think marriage is for me?"

i gave a wry smile. "turns out, i just needed the right person to prove me wrong."

"and to think, i once believed i would be the one to make you my wife," samantha sighed dramatically.

"sorry to disappoint," i teased, turning to grab my clutch.

from downstairs, the unmistakable sound of little feet pattering across the hardwood filled the air.

"you look pretty!" mia beamed, her curls bouncing as she clutched onto the hem of my dress like i was made of pure gold.

jude, his hands firmly grasping miranda's leg, looked up at me with sleepy, round eyes. "you going?"

i knelt down, kissing both their foreheads. "just for a little while, baby. but you're staying with all of your aunts tonight. and if you're good, aunt charlotte might even let you have extra cookies."

charlotte shot me a don't promise things you don't plan on delivering look before sighing. "fine. one extra cookie."

"behave," i warned the kids before turning my gaze to duncan, who had just arrived in the doorway.

he looked like he was seeing me for the first time all over again. his blue eyes roamed over me in quiet awe.

"duncan?" i prompted, a small smirk on my lips.

he blinked, dragging himself out of whatever trance he was in. "huh?"

samantha leaned toward miranda and whispered, "oh, he's gone for her."

"never stood a chance," miranda murmured back.

i tilted my head at my husband. "you're staring."

"you're making it impossible not to," he murmured. his voice was quieter than usual, but it held that familiar texas warmth. the kind that always managed to make my chest feel full.

carrie took jude's tiny hand, started leading the kids toward the kitchen. "alright, lovebirds, we'll be fine. go have your very romantic night before i start questioning my own life choices."

i pressed one last kiss to the kids' cheeks, whispered a thank you to my friends, then took duncan's outstretched hand.

and just like that, we were off.

AUBERGINE RESTAURANT
new york, new york
8pm

the restaurant was intimate... soft golden light from overhead fixtures called for a warm glow across the room. the hum of the city filtered in from the street, but inside, it felt quiet, private, like they existed in their own little bubble.

duncan pulled out my chair before settling across from her, his blue eyes never straying far from my face.

"you really can't stop looking at me, can you?" i teased, taking a sip of my wine.

duncan smirked, resting his chin on his fist. "not my fault my wife is the most beautiful woman in the room."

i rolled my eyes, but the soft pink in my cheeks betrayed me.

we ordered our food, falling into easy conversation. the kind that felt effortless, like second nature. we talked about everything: mia's newfound obsession with ballet, jude's endless curiosity about how things worked, and how i still left books scattered in every room of the apartment.

"you've turned our place into the columbia university library," duncan joked, shaking his head.

"you say that like it's a bad thing," i quipped.

he laughed, shaking his head. "no, it's just... i look around, and i see bits of you everywhere. and i love that. i love that it always feels like home."

i felt something catch in her throat. i set my wine glass down, my fingers gently tracing the rim.

"you know," she said softly, "i used to be scared of this."

duncan's brows furrowed. "this?"

"marriage. forever. i thought... i don't know, that it would end up like my parents. that i'd screw it up somehow." i exhaled, glancing up at him. "but then there's you. and i don't feel scared anymore."

duncan reached across the table, taking my hand in his. his grip was warm, steady, just like him.

"you're not gonna screw this up," he promised. "we're not gonna screw this up."

i squeezed his hand, a slow smile forming. "i love you."

his thumb brushed over my knuckles. "i love you too, darlin'."

and just like that, everything felt right.

JAMIE AND DUNCAN'S SHARED BROWNSTONE
new york, new york
10pm

by the time we reached our apartment, my heels dangled from my fingers, my laughter soft as duncan fumbled with the keys.

as soon as the door swung open, i sighed. "god, i forgot how good it feels to be barefoot after a night out."

duncan chuckled, closing the door behind them. "youre only now realizing that shoes are optional?"

i turned, draping my arms around his neck. "shut up."

his hands found my waist, pulling me in closer. "make me."

i smirked, leaning up until my lips hovered just over his. "you wouldn't stand a chance."

duncan didn't even give me a chance to tease him further. he closed the space between them, kissing me slow and deep, like he had all the time in the world.

and maybe, just maybe, they did. because this? this was forever.
