CHARLOTTE AND DAKOTA'S SHARED APARTMENT
new york, new york
7pm
i loved my brother. i loved my sister in law. but if the party didn't pick up soon, i was going to fall asleep in my champagne flute.
charlotte had tried, i'll give her that. her park avenue apartment was decorated in soft blush tones, candles flickering on every surface, and a meticulously arranged charcuterie board that looked like it belonged in a french patisserie. the playlist was a tasteful blend of norah jones and ella fitzgerald.
it was... charming. it was elegant but it was not a bachelorette party.
"oh my god," miranda muttered, looking around as she picked up a tiny cucumber sandwich. "this is a bible study."
carrie smirked. "i was thinking more of a garden club brunch, but sure."
samantha, draped lazily across the couch, took a sip of her champagne and exhaled. "ladies, let's be real, this is a baby shower without the baby."
charlotte gasped. "it is not! this is a refined evening! a night of celebration, connection, and wholesome fun."
samantha raised a single, unimpressed eyebrow.
charlotte huffed and grabbed a stack of papers. "i planned games! look, 'how well do you know your groom?' and wedding trivia! and, oh! i made a word search with all things related to marriage!"
miranda blinked at the paper in front of her. "...did you laminate these?"
charlotte lifted her chin. "it's practical."
i glanced at my brother, dakota, who was sitting in the armchair completely unbothered, reading some giant novel that looked like it was written in the 1800s. he turned a page without looking up.
"are we supposed to be quiet so he can study scripture?" carrie asked.
dakota smirked but kept reading. "i'm just here to observe."
samantha groaned, stretching out like a cat. "this is brutal." she gestured toward dakota. "even he looks more entertained over there, and he's reading a book longer than my last relationship."
i laughed, but charlotte frowned. "i thought this would be nice."
"it is nice, char. the fact that you even thought to put together a party is nice." i told her. "all of your parties are lovely."
samantha sighed dramatically as she stood up. "jamie, sweetheart, tell me, is this how you imagined your last wild night before you become a married woman? sitting on a couch, filling out word searches?"
i stayed silent.
samantha clapped her hands together. "we're going downtown."
charlotte gasped. "no, no, no, i planned activities!"
miranda grabbed her coat. "yeah, and we're boycotting them."
carried smirked, "i say we listen to samantha."
charlotte looked horrified as samantha grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the door. "but we haven't even started the 'who said it: shakespeare or love actually?' quiz!"
samantha called back, "oh, sweetie, you are adorable."
DOWNTOWN NEW YORK CITY
new york, new york
11:30pm
the moment we hit the city, everything changed. the lights, the energy, the buzz of people laughing and moving down the sidewalks like they belonged to the night.
we started at a rooftop bar where we toasted to my engagement with overpriced cocktails, then danced our way through a packed club, miranda somehow convinced charlotte to take a single tequila shot that immediately turned her into a giggle machine.
now, we were at a swanky lounge, one of those dimly lit places with velvet booths and bartenders who acted like mixologists.
carrie took a slow sip of her martini. "so, jamie, tell me...how does it feel? knowing you'll be officially tied down?"
i leaned back against the plush seat, a lazy smile on my face. "honestly? it feels... right."
miranda nodded approvingly. "that's how you know."
charlotte, still tipsy from her earlier tequila rebellion, sighed dreamily. "duncan is so good for you. he loves you, jamie."
samantha smirked. "and let's be honest, he looks good for her too."
charlotte giggled. "he does."
carrie tilted her head. "any second thoughts?"
i shook my head. "not one."
aamantha hummed, twirling the olive in her drink. "you sure? last chance to misbehave before you enter full time motherhood and monogamy."
miranda rolled her eyes. "she already has one child and is helping raise duncan's. what do you think she's been doing?"
samantha smirked. "being responsible, which is exactly why she deserves one last night of recklessness."
charlotte leaned in. "what if we dance? one last wild dance before jamie is a mrs.?"
samantha grinned. "now that, i can get behind."
and just like that, we were back on our feet, laughing as we made our way toward the dance floor because this was new york, the night was young, and we had everything to celebrate.
housekeeping notes !
no hate to charlotte's parties they all look like they're a blast and honestly, i'd love to go to one 💋
