JAMIE AND HOLDEN'S "SHARED" BROWNSTONE
new york, new york
12pm
miranda sat up straight next to me as she represented
me as a lawyer. "do we really need miranda here as a lawyer? i don't even have a lawyer present." holden said from the other side of the table. "i thought it was going to just be a...you want the house, i give you the house the end."
i exhaled deeply, feeling a sense of tension. "i just think it's best that i have my lawyer present since this is a big decision." i said, my voice steady.
holden shrugged as he leaned back in his chair, "why? we're both adults with brains."
"if you had a brain you wouldn't have cheated." i snapped.
"so! let's get started with the property." miranda said.
holden rolled his eyes, his gaze drifting away from me and to the table in front of him.
miranda scribbled some notes onto her legal pad, her gaze shifting between holden and i.
"she can have this place." holden finally said, "she loves it here and the least i can do is let her have it."
i looked at him, surprised by his sudden generosity. "holden, are you serious?"
he nodded, his expression still cold and detached. "yeah. you can have it. i don't care. you said you wanted me out so my things are gone...it's all yours."
i bit my lip, feeling a mix of emotions. i loved this house, but i hated that this was how things turned out.
miranda spoke up, "okay good. now we need to talk about the terms. and both of you please sign here, it talks about the rights of the home how it's now i'm ms. boyd's ownership."
holden quickly signed the paper, without reading it over.
i took a deep breath before signing my name. i couldn't believe that it had come to this.
"what about the baby?" holden asked. "it's my child and i want to see 'em when it's born."
miranda spoke up, "so you want to talk about visitation rights?"
"well, i wouldn't want him or her to grow up without you." i admitted. "so i can assure you that you'll see the baby."
"we could switch off weekly." holden suggested.
i nodded, trying to keep my emotions at bay. "that sounds good."
holden leaned back in his chair, his expression still aloof. "good. glad that's settled."
miranda then handed out another sheet to sign, "this is for the agreed visitation rights."
holden and i both signed the agreement in a silence. the room felt like a funeral.
my eyes shifted to him, taking in his familiar features that i still loved but still hurt from his betrayal.
there was an awkward silence as the agreements and signed contracts were all placed in a manila envelope.
miranda spoke up, putting her legal pad back in her bag. "well, that's it folks."
"does this mean i have to get a lawyer to review everything?" holden asked.
miranda chuckled sarcastically. "you should've gotten a lawyer the moment you decided to cheat on your wife." she said bluntly.
holden rolled his eyes.
"so, miranda, can i get a copy of the documents?" i asked.
miranda nodded, still holding onto the manila envelope. "sure. i was going to send copies to you and him once i got back to my office." she said.
i smiled warmly, "thank you and thanks for all your help." i told my best friend.
holden suddenly stood up, "i think i should get going." he said, not looking in my direction.
miranda's eyes followed him, "see you around, buddy." she said sarcastically.
holden didn't respond, he just gave us a nod before walking out of the door.
when he was finally gone, miranda turned to me and raised her eyebrows. "well, that was interesting."
i let out a deep sigh, feeling emotionally drained. "it was a shitshow."
miranda nodded in agreement, "he is a piece of work for sure. i'm happy things with you two didn't work out. what's crazy is that he seemed like such a dreamboat at first!"
i forced out a laugh, still feeling a mix of emotions. "i know, right? but what can you do? some people are just better at hiding their true selves than others." i said, slumping back against the chair.
LE VERRE MANHATTAN
new york, new york
7:30pm
seated in a dimly lit restarting, i waited for my friends to arrive at the table which was adorned with candles, deep red roses, and cocktails at each seat. or in my case, water.
samantha was the first to arrive, i couldn't help but noticed how radiant she looked despite her cancer treatments. she wore a plunging gold dress as charlotte entered soon after both glowing and poised, followed by miranda, looking sharp in a red dress. and finally, carrie, who wore vintage dior swept in last with a smile.
eight months pregnant, i moved carefully in an elegant maternity dress as i greeted them all with hugs.
samantha smiled at the group, "god, i missed us. when was the last time we all sat down and had a meal that didn't involve one of us crying into our pasta?" she said referring to the time when charlotte cried at my pregnancy announcement.
carrie smirked, "samantha, not everyone cries into their pasta."
samantha shrugged, "some of us have deeper emotions, carrie. and deeper plates." she said as she raised her martini glass, toasting to herself.
miranda let out a heavy sigh as she looked at her cocktail. "i should've ordered something stronger."
i grinned, "i can't drink, but i'll judge you all if that helps."
carrie dramatically placed her clutch on the table, "well, ladies, i have officially survived another week in manhattan."
"barely." samantha quipped. "i saw that column you wrote about men who ghost. "like casper, but with less charm."
carrie chuckled and leaned forward. "oh, just wait. i have a little something to share later."
miranda raised an eyebrow but kept quiet, instead she continued sipping her drink.
"smith sends his love. he's in la shooting some action movie. he plays a "handsome man in peril."" samantha explained.
"aren't those just called movies?" charlotte asked as she tilted her head.
"i know, right? but he's happy, i'm happy, and cancer hasn't made me any less fabulous, so i say i win." samantha replied.
the girls all clinked their cocktail glasses except me as i clinked my water dramatically.
"thank god cancer didn't kill your ego." miranda said sarcastically.
"honey, if chemo couldn't take me down, a snarky redhead definitely won't." samantha said as she eyed miranda.
charlotte suddenly turned serious, "i wish i could say everything's been great on my end. lily is wonderful, but dakota's daughter... she's been wild lately.
hearing news about my niece acting 'wild' caused my eyebrows to raise. "wild how?"
"she came home at five in the morning wearing a fur coat and sunglasses. no pants." charlotte informed them.
"maybe she's just a free spirit." miranda suggested.
charlotte shook her head immediately, "or maybe she's one bad decision away from being in page six."
"as someone who has been in page six multiple times, i don't see the problem." samantha said with a shrug.
"i just want to help her. she's nineteen, she's modeling, and i don't think she realizes how quickly bad choices add up." charlotte said.
carrie smirked, "oh, honey. if bad choices were currency, we'd all be millionaires."
i smiled, "i'll talk to jemma, okay?" i told the brunette who thanked me. "well, i have news. i met with holden today."
silence filled the table as the girls shared puzzled looks.
miranda chimed in, "we finalized everything. she gets the brownstone, and they'll share custody, one week on, one week off."
"ugh. sounds exhausting. i prefer my exes neatly stored in my rearview mirror." samantha said as she sipped her drink.
charlotte spoke in a gentle tone, "how are you feeling about it?"
"honestly? it's surreal. i lived in that brownstone with him thinking it was forever. now, it's mine alone. and holden... i mean, he's the father of my baby. he's an ass, but he's still in my life." i answered.
"at least he agreed to everything. some men fight just to fight." miranda said, pointing out the bright side.
"and you have duncan. how's that going?" carrie asked.
"oh he's amazing. he actually wants to be here for me, for this baby. it's different. safe. he makes me feel safe." i admitted.
samantha gave me a certain look, "safe isn't a bad thing, sweetheart. just make sure it's still good."
just then there was a slight lull in the conversation. carrie who was swirling her cosmo for the longest time spoke up, "so, speaking of exes..."
she said as we all turned to her.
"i've been seeing big again." she admitted.
a beat. then chaos.
"are you kidding me?" miranda exclaimed.
"but you just got back from paris? i thought you were single and a free bird now!" charlotte said.
i took a deep breath before saying, "please tell me you at least made him work for it."
carrie suddenly got defensive, "i did! he showed up, he said all the right things, and... it just feels different this time."
miranda snorted, "it always feels different. until it doesn't."
samantha smirked, "is the sex still good?"
"wouldn't be here if it wasn't." carrie winked.
"i just want you to be happy." charlotte said.
"i am happy. for now." carrie responded as she placed a hand on charlotte's back.
samantha then lifted her glass, "to new chapters... whether they're with the right guy, the wrong guy, or just with ourselves."
i placed my hand on my belly, "and to whoever writes ours next."
"and to us." carrie added.
we clinked our glasses, laughter bubbling up as the night continues—because no matter how much changes, we'll always have each other.
