TAO RESTAURANT
new york, new york
7pm
holden and i were sat at a small table in the corner of the crowded restaurant, eating pasta and talking. the lights hung overhead, creating a romantic, yet casual atmosphere. we sat opposite eachother, his large frame taking up the entire booth seat and making my smaller stature feel even smaller.
holden took a mouthful of the red wine and sat it on the table. "are you sure you don't want any?"
i laughed and pushed the wine glass back towards him. "no thanks. i think you're enjoying yourself enough for both of us." i teased.
holden chuckled and picked up the wine glass again. "come on, one glass never hurt anybody." he encouraged as he sat back in the booth and took another sip of wine. he eyed me with a smile, his dark brown eyes watching as i took a forkful of pasta, ignoring his suggestion to drink.
"you know, i'm glad you brought this up...i actually can't drink." i informed him.
this seemed to surprise him as he placed the wine glass down yet again. "you can't drink? what are you an alcoholic?" he teased.
"no, you know i'm not!" i said as i playfully smacked him.
he laughed and held up his hands in defense. "alright, alright i'm sorry." he said through chuckles. his tone shifted to a more serious one as his eyes studied me. "so no drinking...why?"
i shifted in my seat as his eyes studied me intently. a small wave of nervousness washed over me, but i felt comfortable enough to be honest with him. "i...i'm pregnant." i admitted to him. his eyes went wide with surprise.
it took him a few seconds to process my words, his jaw nearly dropping. "you're...pregnant?" he repeated, seeming to still be in a state of disbelief.
i nodded, biting my bottom lip nervously. "yeah, i'm pregnant. i found out a few days ago." i confirmed as i studied his face for any signs of shock or disappointment. "i was going to tell you right after but when you asked me out for dinner, i figured that'd be best."
for a second he was quiet, the words seeming to sink in and register properly. his eyes then came up to mine, his expression now soft. "hey...i'll admit, i'm a bit dumbfounded...but i love you. and i'll love the baby, too." he said.
i felt a mixture of emotions at his words. i was happy that he didn't seem mad at the news, but i felt a hint of doubt. part of me wondered if he was saying he'd love the baby and me because i was pregnant.
i looked down at my plate, a bit unsure of what to say. "you're not mad?" i asked quietly.
he reached out and took my hand, his large fingers intertwining with my smaller ones. he gave it a reassuring squeeze. "no...i'm not mad. i'll admit, it's unexpected. but no, i'd never be mad at you for having my child." he said warmly.
i felt a small sense of relief at his words. i offered him a weak smile. "wow, you are taking this way better than i expected."
he chuckled. "what, you thought a guy would run the other way once he found out he was a dad?" he teased.
"well, i certainly thought you might be a bit hesitant." i said truthfully.
holden smirked and let out a scoff. "please. you and i were made to be together...i'm just glad it's happening sooner than later." he said firmly.

MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

"so he told you he loves you after hearing you're carrying his child?" samantha summarized as we took our seats at the arena to see samantha and her dog, elizabeth taylor in the dog contest.
"i mean, am i crazy for questioning it? i know i should be ecstatic, he said i love you!" i said before miranda jumped in.
"but you're worried it wasn't a real i love you because he only said it after hearing you're pregnant." she said.
"exactly!" i said.
"i don't blame you. if some guy suddenly whipped out 'i love you' after a pregnancy announcement, i'd be worried about it too." samantha chimed in her opinion.
"or maybe, holden just realized it was his cue to finally say what's been so heavy on his mind!" carrie suggested.
"that could be true too," miranda said, agreeing.
i sighed as i shifted in my seat. "i don't know, guys. this is going to keep me up for weeks."
carrie placed a hand on my wrist. "there's a way to settle this once and for all..." she said.
"communication..." i muttered.
"say it without sarcasm for once, yes." carrie teased.
miranda nodded. "talk it through with him and ask him...don't let this drive a wedge between the two of you because trust me- you do not wanna bring a baby into the world without a strong father."
i knew they were both right. i needed to communicate with holden about how i was feeling. no one was going to be able to help me sort through this other than the one person who could actually give me the facts - holden himself.
"ugh, you guys are right. but not today." i said firmly. "it's dog beauty pageant day!"
we were all silent as we watched a golden retriever strut across the stage looking very unenthusiastic.
"this dog looks like he wishes it was anywhere else." i observed.
carrie nodded. "i can relate."
it was then miranda spoke up suddenly. "i'm getting married." she blurted out.
silence filled the air as all three of us turned to look at miranda. i quickly spoke up. "come again?"
"yeah, you heard me." miranda said again, a small smirk on her face.
"oh wow, miranda that's exciting news!" carrie said, her eyes wide.
miranda nodded and looked at her friends, holding out wedding invites. "yeah, i was going to wait to tell you all until after the pageant but i just couldn't keep my mouth shut."
samantha leaned over and picked up an invitation, reading through it. her eyes went wide as she saw the date. "hold on a second, this wedding is in like two weeks?!"
"yeah." miranda confirmed, looking down at the invites. "robert and i figured, why wait."
carrie had picked up an invitation and looked over the date. "two weeks?! that's such short notice."
"yeah, i know. robert and i decided that we didn't see a point in planning a wedding way out. we wanted it to be soon." miranda explained.
"but two weeks?! i gotta figure out my dress!" carrie exclaimed.
i tried to ignore carrie's dramatic comment, and instead focus on congratulating miranda. "this is great news! congrats, miranda."
"congratulations." samantha added, giving the ginger a smile.
miranda smiled and accepted all the congrats. "thanks, guys. i'm excited and a little scared, but overall i'm happy."
"you're getting married! you should totally be excited!" carrie said as she placed an arm around miranda. "how are you only 'a little scared'?"
miranda shrugged. "i guess i'm just worried that something bad will happen to derail this. that's the only thing i'm scared of."
samantha shook her head at miranda and spoke up. "honey no. you can't say that kinda stuff. you're going to jinx it for yourself!"
carrie nodded in agreement. "yeah. don't speak it into existence, okay? but i'd like to add that i have some news myself..."
samantha looked at her. "really?"
"i've been seeing aleksandr petrovsky. he's a-" carrie started to say before samantha interrupted.
"russian artist...older, known for sleeping around. i know of him." she answered as she put on her glasses.
"okay the only 'old' person here is you. seriously, what's up with the glasses?" carrie said to samantha.
"lots of people wear glasses, it doesn't mean they're old." i informed carrie.
samantha nodded, "exactly. and plus, i have a sexy young man who loves to fuck me. and i'm fabulous."
"i agree, you look very classy...like a sexy librarian." i said with an approving nod.
"see, somebody here has sense!" samantha said with an approving grin.
carrie rolled her eyes and muttered under her breath.
miranda suddenly looked up and spotted someone on the stage of the arena, and her eyes lit up. "hey, there goes charlotte and elizabeth taylor!" she said as she pointed her finger.
we all looked up to the stage to see elizabeth taylor, a cavalier king charles spaniel, trotting across the stage in a blue and white checkered diaper.
"why is the dog wearing a diaper?" carrie blurted out, looking slightly confused.
samantha snorted out a laugh and looked at the dog. "guess it's that time of the month for elizabeth taylor."
