( a sex and the city fic )
BISTROT LEO RESTAURANT
new york, new york
6:30pm
we were sitting down at a small bistro in manhattan. it was a nice, simple french restaurant that had dim lighting and an overall intimate vibe. however, we were getting the eyes of other diners.
"i don't like it when people stare." brad noted. "i'm used to it, but i'll never learn to like it."
"you're brad pitt." i said.
"i know." he said before taking a sip of his water.
i took note of how tense he was at the attention he was getting. i thought he loved the attention. "i thought you liked having fans."
"having fans is one thing. having to deal with people staring at me like i'm some kind of alien that just came to earth. it gets old pretty fast. i hate going into a restaurant and suddenly having fifty cameras shoved in my face." brad explained, his eyes still darting all around the room. "i don't even want to think about the paparazzi we'll deal with when we leave here," he said before taking his final spoonful of his meal.
i could feel his frustration as i too looked around the room. i could tell he did not want to be the center of attention at the moment.
i placed my glass of wine on the table and reached my hand out, placing it on his, "hey." i said quietly.
brad looked at me, his eyes a mixture of annoyance and exhaustion. "where are we going after this? your place? mine? our seperate ways?" he asked matter of a factly.
i raised an eyebrow, "is that what you want?" i inquired, suddenly feeling nervous about what he was going to say back.
brad pulled his hand away from mine. "not exactly."
i bit down on my bottom lip, "then what do you want?"
he ran a hand through his hair, not looking me in the eye. "look, i'm not saying that i don't want to go back to your place with you, but-" he began before suddenly stopping himself.
"what?" i inquired.
brad looked at me for a moment, seeming as if debating whether or not he should say it. he sighed, "this is going to sound very conceited."
"just say it." i said bluntly.
he looked at me for a moment. "well...there's no point in beating around the bush. i want no strings attached. meaning we hook up and then we both go back to our lives."
i didn't respond. was he being serious?
he leaned back in his chair. "i like you, jamie. but i'm not looking for anything serious at the moment. and when we talked about this a couple of days ago you looked freaked. so how do you feel?"
i sat back in my chair and sighed sadly. i looked him in the eye. "i want a family. and a life. like...marriage and commitment. children and happiness...i'm thirty-six. it's time to stop clowning around."
"and i'm certain that you'll get all of that." he said as he paid with cash to take care of the bill. "but not with me, and tonight i'd be more than happy to hang out. so...your place?" he asked nonchalantly as he stood.
i didn't move. i simply stared back at him, unsure of how to process what he was telling me.
he then bent down to be on my eye level. "i can't keep you from getting what you want. but just know that i won't give you what you're looking for and i'm not going to pretend that i can. i'm gonna go get the car, meet you out front, okay?" he said before walking out of the restaurant.
i sat there for a moment, the words he has said replaying in my mind. i then heard a voice in front of me. "looks like some guy ditched you, huh?"
i looked up to see a man standing where brad was moments ago.
"looks like or did you hear everything?" i replied. i recognized him as he'd been sitting next to us alone for most of the night.
he chuckled, "my ears were burning," before he extended his hand out to me. "i'm calvin. and who are you?" he asked jokingly.
i took his hand and shook it, "i'm jamie. and he didn't ditch me. instead he's waiting for me to join him in his car."
calvin nodded. "well, that whole conversation seemed very cryptic and dramatic at the same time. you wanting a family and a white picket fence and all that and him just telling you 'nah'." he said before chuckling again.
i shook my head as i emptied my wine glass, "yeah, like what the hell was that about?" i said as i stood up, about to head out.
"seems to me like he's just not that into you." calvin concurred.
"excuse me?" i said, needing to hear those words again.
calvin chuckled, "well...it's not rocket science. you want marriage and kids and he's just looking for a little bit of fun. sounds like there's a disconnect there. or in other words, he's just not that into you, because if he was...he'd make a change."
"well i didn't expect him to change himself, we've been seeing each other very briefly." i defended gently.
calvin shrugged, "either way, a relationship is all about give and take. i know it sounds old school, but the right guy will compromise. he'll give up a few things to make you happy. if he's not willing, he's not the one for you." he explained before giving me a wink.
"what are you, a date doctor?" i asked him.
"no, i'm a special agent at the bau believe it or not. but i have a lot of experience to give advice." he explained.
"bau?" i inquired.
"behavioral analysis unit. we profile serial killers." calvin explained.
suddenly brad came back into the restaurant and saw that i was talking to calvin. he walked over, his eyes darting between calvin and myself.
"brad." brad introduced himself to calvin as he extended his hand. he didn't look threatened by me and calvin's ongoing conversation in the slightest.
calvin shook brad's hand. "calvin gannon."
brad then turned his attention to me, "we probably should get going," he told me as he placed a hand on the small of my back.
i smiled slightly and nodded, "i guess we should." i said to him, but my mind was still on the conversation i was previously having. i looked over at calvin, "it was nice talking to you." i said, before brad's hand guided me out of the restaurant.
the two of us began to walk towards his car once we exited the restaurant, the paparazzi now having spotted him. however, i wasn't even paying attention to the cameras in my face. brad clearly picked up on my silence.
once we were in his car, he looked at me. "you're quiet. what's going on in your head?" he inquired.
i sat back for a moment, "just thinking about the conversation you and i had while we were in there." i said simply.
"which part?" brad asked.
"the part where you told me i wasn't going to get what i want from you." i said matter of a factly, finally looking at him.
he hummed, "what about it is bothering you?"
"we want two very different things." i admitted.
brad nodded, "yeah we do." he said bluntly.
i exhaled, "and a compromise isn't in the question?"
he sighed, his eyes not leaving the road, "jamie, you seem amazing. and you're beautiful and fun to hang out with. i'm not going to deny that i am enjoying what we have going on, but i'm not going to sit here and lead you on by saying that i will give you what you want. i'm just not looking for a relationship at the moment." he explained. "if anyone would have to compromise, it'd be you."
maybe calvin was right, maybe brad truly isn't that into me.
CLUB
new york, new york
8:30pm
carrie and samantha had been invited to a club full of navy sailors. carrie, samantha, charlotte and i walked down the new york streets headed towards the club.
"so do you think that brad is not that into you?" carrie asked after i filled them in on my dinner.
i shrugged, "who am i kidding? he's brad pitt."
"that makes him nothing but human. you know, he poops just like the rest of us." charlotte noted bluntly.
"i broke up with richard because i was scared that he was cheating. but who cares? i'll find someone tonight." samantha said with a shrug.
samantha chuckled at her comment while carrie rolled her eyes.
"what's the longest your ever gone without sex?" charlotte asked though her question wasn't directed at anyone.
"oh no, you don't get that info without dinner and a drink." carrie responded.
"next week will make it one month." charlotte admitted.
"honey, why?" samantha asked as she stopped in her tracks.
charlotte shrugged, "i'm on a lot of adoption lists...i don't want to do anything that could mess with that, and at my...ahem...season of life, i can't get pregnant anymore so i figured 'why bother'."
""why bother?" you've got to be kidding me. if i were you, i'd embrace this! go fuck whatever without a condom and without any consequences." samantha told the brunette.
charlotte chuckled, "you know what. i'm going to have sex with my husband tonight."
"tmi!" i exclaimed, not wanting to think of my brother.
the girls all laughed.
"do you girls think any of the sailors are looking for a wife?" i inquired.
carrie spoke, "yeah. they're looking to have fun tonight and then go back home to their wives." she said.
"i miss miranda." i said, truthfully missing the redhead who easily fell into steps with us.
"she's busy being the best mom there is!" charlotte said with a smile.
"enough of the babies and marital talk." samantha said as she opened the door into the club where there were young sailors everywhere. "god bless america." samantha commented as she took in the scene.
half and hour later, i found myself seated at the bar looking around for the girls. "you looking for someone?" a young sailor asked me.
"oh yeah. just my girlfriends. it's like a zoo in here." i commented.
the sailor chuckled, "first time in one of these, huh?" he inquired as he took a sip of his beer.
"how'd you guess?" i asked, a smirk on my face as i flagged the bartender down.
"you've got that look about ya." he joked. "it's the wide eyes and the confusion on your face. either someone dragged you here or you're not very familiar with this type of environment."
i chuckled, "well you're not wrong to assume this isn't my scene."
he leaned on the bar, "i'm gonna take a wild guess and say your friends dragged you here?"
i nodded as the bartender gave me my drink. "that obvious, huh?"
"i've been here enough times to know when i see someone out of their comfort zone." he teased.
i shrugged, "maybe i'm out of my comfort zone, but that doesn't mean i can't have a good time."
"yeah?" the man said. "let's dance."
and with that i quickly downed my drink before taking his hand and him pulling me out onto the crowded dance floor. we danced for a few minutes before he yelled over the music, "by the way, what did you order?"
i chuckled to myself, that seemed to be the conversation starter of the year.
housekeeping notes !
big news for the end of this book: with the help of pughdts i've decided that the ending will not be the same as in the show for some of the girls. so on top of thinking of jamie's endgame you'll also have to think about carrie's, charlotte's and miranda's!
calvin gannon has been introduced! if you don't remember- his face claim is in the new characters 💋
i have a new fanfiction out! "love is blind" my jfk jr fic
