( a sex and the city fic )

CAFE CAFE
new york, new york

a few weeks after charlotte's wedding, i was loosely seeing sully and charlotte was back in new york since going to paris for her honeymoon. dakota wanted to take her to the "city of art" since she loves all things art.

everyone seemed to be on edge, miranda quietly sipped her drink, carrie silently stared at miranda, samantha quietly picked at her salad.

i looked at the three girls with raised eyebrows before charlotte came walking in, she didn't look as happy as i'd expect a girl to look who was finally back in the states and finally in the presence of her best friends. though she still had a smile on her face.

"charlotte! hey!" i said as i stood up. "welcome back, honey."

"pictures, pictures, pictures, we need to see pictures!" samantha urged.

charlotte gave us each small hugs before taking a seat next to me. "here you all go." she said as she handed out printed photos of her and dakota in paris.

"what's going on, you okay?" i said, not really worrying about the photos as much as i was worried about the frown on her face.

"i can't get pregnant." she expressed. "when i think of all those women every day, getting pregnant, getting pregnant, getting pregnant. and what do i find out? that i can't have kids!" she exclaimed.

"charlotte honey, don't worry. you'll get pregnant," carried assured.

"you don't get it, carrie. i can't get pregnant! i have a thing called parthenogenesis." she cried out.

"what is that?" i asked, putting my hand out and taking her hand in mine.

"parthenogenesis, it means that women can get pregnant without sex." she explained as the three friends stared at her a bit shocked. "in other words, it prevents me from having children."

"but char, there are other forms of having a baby. adoption is a wonderful thing." carrie spoke up.

"doctors can be wrong most of the time!" miranda said with a crooked smile.

"i keep hearing all of these stories about people getting pregnant just looking at each other." charlotte said. "the big joke is, i spent my entire twenties worried that i'd get pregnant. i could've been screwing everything in sight."

"coulda, woulda, shoulda." samantha joked.

"i should've been so lucky to get pregnant by mistake. but no!" she then turned to miranda. "okay, what's with the eyes, miranda?"

"nothing." she said quickly as she looked at carrie.

"you're just sitting there, you haven't said a word, and you're making "the eyes."" charlotte pressed.

miranda sighed, "it's nothing." she waved off.

"you think i'm pathetic or something?" charlotte suggested.

"no! it's not about you." carrie reassured.

"what is it about?" charlotte asked.

"i cannot think of a worse time to tell you this." miranda said.

"oh my god..." carrie muttered.

charlotte looked between the two. "what the f is going on?" she questioned.

"i'm pregnant." miranda blurted out with jazz hands. "it's steve's."

"mercy fuck?" samantha guessed as miranda nodded.

"he only has one ball, it isn't fair!" charlotte exclaimed.

i sighed as i handed charlotte my water glass, "charlotte honey, take a breath. here, have a sip of water."

she shook her head. "how could you do this to me?" she said to miranda.

"to you?" miranda repeated.

"stop! please, stop." carrie begged, not wanting an argument to be made.

"what are you going to do with it?" samantha asked.

miranda answered by making a fake slit to her neck as to say abortion.

"you mean to tell me that you're not even going to consider keeping it?" charlotte said.

"this is not in my plans right now, and i really feel awful talking about this in front of you." miranda responded calmly.

charlotte scoffed as she grabbed her things, pictures included. "then i'll leave. you can just sit here and have your abortion talk." she said before storming out.

"charlotte, wait!" i called out.

"oh!" miranda cried out as she covered her face.

"she didn't mean it. all she can think about right now is babies." carrie told miranda.

"she makes me sound so-" miranda started to say.

"don't do that!" samantha urged. "okay, it's less than a desirable situation, but it happens. we've all been there."

"i haven't." miranda said.

"i've had two!" samantha said.

"carrie, how many have you had?" miranda asked.

"uh, one." she answered.

"right. that waiter at tgi friday's." samantha replied. "what about you?" she said looking at me.

"don't make this worse than it is, he was a waiter at a saloon! and the saloon was very happening in the 80s." carrie defended.

i shook my head, "none. but i think the no pregnancy thing was pure luck." i answered.

STREETS OF NEW YORK
new york, new york

shopping at a nearby flea market, i received a phone call. i saw it was emmett, mr. friendzoner. i hesitantly answered the phone. "hello?" i said.

"hey, jamie." his quiet voice came through the other side of the phone.

"hey! how are you?" i said, a bit confused as to why he was calling me.

"turn around." he replied.

confused, i turned around. but he wasn't there. i frowned, "huh?" i asked, taking the phone away from my ear only to see him standing in front of me, a smile plastered on his face.

"hi." he said with a soft chuckle as i smiled in shock. "surprise!"

"wow, you really creeped me out. i thought i was going crazy for a second." i said as he laughed. "so, what's up?"

he shook his head, "nothing, can't i just invite my friend out for lunch?" he asked casually.

there he went again, throwing the label "friend" out there. "now?" i questioned.

he shrugged, "i have some free time and here you are."

"you're not busy?" i asked, knowing very well that he probably had many things he was working on.

"surprisingly, no. so are you free?" he returned the question.

"yeah, was just trying to kill some time," i said as i looked around the flea market.

"want to get lunch then?" he then asked.

i let out a sigh. "sure. why not?" i said with a shrug.

"that's the spirit!" he said happily.

"where to?" i asked as we began walking.

"how about the corner bistro?" he suggested.

"perfect." i agreed.

out to lunch with him felt like a breath of fresh air, since being friendzoned by him we hadn't really hung out. but now that we were hanging out, i couldn't be happier.

halfway through my sandwich, a voice was heard. "jamie?" a man said.

i looked up and noticed joel outlaw. the writer who i saw briefly when i was in los angeles with the girls, things had gone well between us before he completely ghosted me.

"joel? what are you doing in new york?" i questioned, a stern look on my face.

"i'm actually here for a few weeks for a book signing and conference." he answered as he stepped closer. "saw you through the window and thought i'd say hello." he continued as he looked down at me. "i see i interrupted your lunch." he added as emmett watched closely.

"yes, you have." i replied.

"are you the boyfriend?" joel asked emmett.

"boyfriend?" emmett repeated with a laugh. "no, no. jamie's an old friend from college. just friends." he replied. he sure did love that word friend.

"ah, i see." joel nodded as he gave a small laugh. "so you're not with anyone right now?" he asked me.

"i don't think that's any of your business, joel." i replied harshly. "what do you want?"

"you once promised me a tour of new york." he recalled.

"and you once told me you'd call me." i retorted.

joel nodded, "i know. and i know i really hurt you by ghosting you." he said truthfully. "i really did want to talk to you, but my life was falling apart." he confessed.

"your life was falling apart?" i asked, trying not to sound sarcastic as i knew he got a bad habit of exaggerating.

"yeah, i was dealing with some personal stuff." he revealed.

"i get it, but joel...i just wish you would have talked to me. you didn't have to shut me out like that. things were really good between us." i confessed.

"we weren't gonna be serious. you live in new york, i live in los angeles." he pointed out. "good thing is that i'm here now."

"good thing?" i repeated in a questioning manner.

he nodded, "yeah i mean here we are."

i wasn't sure why he was pursuing me again. was i just that good of a lay? a nice girl? what was it? "look joel, i don't know what you've been thinking with this reunion of ours, but i'm not interested." i informed.

"you can't tell me you never think of me." he said.

"the moment you had me waiting in my hotel room for a call, i removed you from my mind, joel." i confessed.

joel pulled a pen out of his pocket and pulled a receipt out of his pocket and began to write something down. "and how about now?" he asked.

i rolled my eyes as i shook my head. "i appreciate the gesture, but i'm not interested joel. i have a life." i said.

he nodded and smiled as he continued writing, "that was great." he said as he looked up at me. "that'll be great in my new poem...i'm thinking of titling it "forget her."" he said.

i looked down at the receipt with my words on it and scoffed, "you've got to be joking."

"i'm not." he answered as he tucked the receipt away in his pocket. "it's a classic story, unrequited love."

"i'm not in love with you joel. i hardly know you." i reminded him.

"that's a shame, maybe if you stayed in los angeles we could've gotten to know each other better." he replied, which irritated me a bit.

i scoffed and looked at the door where an extremely tall man walked in. the man stood at six foot four, and as i got a closer look, i realized it was holden. he hadn't noticed me yet, but i saw him as he made his way to the order.

"who are you staring at?" joel asked, which pulled me attention back to him.

"uh, no one." i replied.

he looked over at holden who was standing at the register. "no, there's someone there." he stated before writing on his receipt again, "and she's checking out another guy write in front of me." he muttered.

"what is this? a reunion for all of the guys i used to talk to?" i muttered as i looked around for a camera to show that this was a prank.

i continued to stare for a bit before looking down at the table. i wasn't sure what to do with joel, holden, and emmett in the same room.

i looked up, "holden?" i called out as i watched him turn towards the sound of my voice.

he stared at me, "jamie?"he seemed a little startled by my presence in the small restaurant, "what are you doing here?" he asked, the sound of his voice making my heart melt.

"i'm having lunch." i answered as he nodded.

his eyes then looked behind me and at joel and emmett. "hey." he said as he made his way closer to me.

"hi..." joel greeted awkwardly as he looked at holden.

i looked between the three men as there were awkward glances exchanged. "holden, this is my friend emmett." i introduced.

"nice to meet you." emmett said with a smile as he shook holden's outstretched hand.

"nice to meet you." holden said before he focused on joel. "and you are?" he asked.

"this is joel." i informed.

holden nodded as he looked at joel. "ah, right." he probably recognized joel from his books or poetry.

"how are you? it's been...a while." i said to him, now solely focused on him.

holden forced a smile, "not by my choice, but yes, it's been a while." he replied.

"how's luca? hopefully not around any peanut butter." i joked hoping it was now the time to joke about his allergic reaction.

holden laughed and nodded. "that's a funny one, luca's good. he's started school at nyu." he replied.

"oh wow, i bet you feel old." i said with a chuckle.

he laughed and nodded. "you're telling me...time really flies, doesn't it?" he said as he looked down at his watch. "i should get going."

i stood up, "well it was really good seeing you. i've been meaning to call, but i didn't know if you'd have me."

"of course i'd have you, jamie. it was nice seeing you too." he said before he pulled me into a hug.

i froze at first before his familiar scent overwhelmed me, causing me to relax against his body and hug him back.

"see you around?" he asked after he let me go, his eyes searching mine.

i nodded with a smile, "i hope so."

he nodded and smiled before he left the establishment. i stood there staring for a moment as emmett watched joel intently.

"two new poems, "forget her" and "i'd have you anytime"" joel listed off. "man, i love new york!"

"you better give me some credit." i told him.

"i'll give you two percent." he replied with a smug smile. "if i ever get a movie deal on this."

i gasped, "that's it? two percent?" i questioned. "that's like nothing."

he nodded with a shrug, "i did the writing, sorry love." he said as he started to pack up his things.

"goodbye, joel. enjoy new york, self guided tours are always an option." i said.

"goodbye jamie, i hope you'll forgive me." he replied.

i shook my head slightly as i watched as the poet left before turning my attention to emmett. "i'm sorry our lunch turned into such a disaster."

"it's nothing, i still had fun." he replied with a smile.

"well, good." i replied.
