"i am so excited to mrs. charlotte york boyd." charlotte said at the table, referring to her wedding which is coming up.

i smiled, "and you know that i can't wait to invite you into our family with open arms."

"so, i think i'm gonna bring aidan." carrie informed us.

i nodded, "and i think that i'll bring duncan."

"wow, that's a big step. are you guys really doing that well again?" charlotte asked me.

"we're bringing dates?" miranda questioned. "i don't have a date, i'm not ready to bring a date." she rambled on.

i looked at miranda with raised eyebrows as i answered charlotte's question, "well, i don't know. i feel like we've been doing pretty well. but, there's no labels yet."

"has holden still not called?" samantha questioned.

"nope, nothing." i answered with a sigh. "i really thought we were going somewhere, i just had to go and poison his son."

"you didn't mean it!" charlotte said as she waved me off.

"hello? we have to bring dates?" miranda questioned.

"well no, but i'm bringing one." samantha responded.

everyone at the table looked at samantha with wide eyes. "you're bringing a date?" miranda asked, clearly in disbelief.

"yeah, i'm seeing this new guy, richard. he's technically my boss, but whatever. we're fucking and we're getting somewhere." samantha said nonchalantly.

carrie shook her head, "who are you and what have you done to samantha?"

"i cannot believe samantha is bringing a date to charlotte's wedding and i'm not! what has the world come to?" miranda exclaimed.

"well you could always go on one of those speed dating things." carrie jokingly suggested.

miranda nodded, "i could..."

"oh sweetie, i was only joking!" carrie said.

"no, i think i might," miranda said, determination visible on her face.

"suit yourself. but i will say, speed dating is one rough process." samantha informed the redhead.

SPEYER LEGACY SCHOOL
new york, new york
12:30pm

on lunch break during my first day at my new job, i found this time as the perfect opportunity to call duncan. sitting alone in my classroom, i dialed his number.

"hey," i said softly once duncan answered.

"what's going on?" his texan accent was heard from the other end.

"i was just wondering if you'd like to escort me to charlotte's wedding.." i said, leaning back in my chair.

duncan was silent for a second before responding. "you know i'd love to...when?" he said, his voice holding some hesitation.

"this saturday, i know it's kind of last minute but they're in a hurry." i explained.

"saturday? oh, i can't. i have a work thing." he said quickly.

"oh you're working?" i replied.

he sighed, "no, that was a lie. i'm going out to drinks."

a little confused on why he lied i let out a slow, "okay..." waiting for him to dwell on his lie.

"drinks with amelia." he finished.

"amelia? as in your ex, amelia?" i questioned.

"yes, amelia as in my ex, amelia." he confirmed.

"i didn't know you two were friends still.." i said, not knowing what else to say except for "so is this like a date or something?"

"it's not a date. it's just drinks." duncan said quickly. i couldn't tell if he was trying to convince himself or me. we were quiet for a second before he spoke up again. "so, are we good?"

"you tell me duncan, are we?" i said. "i mean, you practically throw yourself at me in my own home, you drive me to pennsylvania to attend my friend's mothers funeral, you've been this perfect guy! and now this? we're back to square one."

there was silence for a few seconds before he spoke up again. "it's just drinks, jamie."

"with your ex. that you still have an emotional connection with." i claimed.

"it's friendly!" he exclaimed.

"why didn't you tell me about these drinks plans then? hmm? you had all this time. i doubt you'd say anything if i hadn't called to make plans for that exact day." i said.

"i knew you would react this way-" he said before i interrupted.

"i'm reacting with feelings, duncan. something that you're apparently not capable of anymore!" i exclaimed before hanging up, i looked up to see a man in the doorway. he was dressed in a fireman's uniform. i couldn't tell if it was a cruel joke where samantha had hired me a stripper or not. "can i help you?" i asked the man.

"i'm looking for a jamie boyd." the man replied, looking down at his clipboard.

fairly certain that he was a male stripper, i shook my head. "i'm sorry, but i'm not interested. did samantha hire you? no, was it carrie?" i listed off as the man looked a bit shocked. i laughed, "please tell i don't appreciate them sending a male stripper to my place of work." i said as i recalled when samantha jokingly told me she'd do this.

"no, i'm not a stripper. i'm a fireman." the man finally said after he awkwardly watched at my banter and rambling.

"well, i don't see a fire." i said as i looked around at the quiet classroom, i was still a bit on edge from my phone call with duncan.

the firefighter shook his head, "and you won't. i'm here to talk about fire safety to your class."

i gasped, i had been so wrapped up in my phone call that i'd forgotten to skim the schedule for today's afternoon class. "oh yes, i'm so sorry. i had completely blanked on that i'm so sorry. please come in," i rambled as i stood up, feeling like my face was red with embarrassment.

"thank you," the man nodded as he walked into the classroom, stopping in front of the podium in the front of the class.

"the kids will be here in ten minutes or so, they're at lunch." i explained to the man as he placed his bag down.

he turned and looked at me. "you okay?"

i quickly nodded before asking him a question. "how long have you been a firefighter?" i asked.

"eight years." he simply replied. "navy before that."

"how long did you serve in the navy?" i inquired, growing a little more interested.

"seven years, i went in fresh out of highschool." he said with a smile, clearly enjoying talking about his life.

i nodded, smiling a bit at the idea of the man joining the military at such a young age. "were you ever deployed?"

"multiple times, yeah. the last time i was overseas i served three years in south korea." he responded to my question.

"why did you switch to being a firefighter?" i asked, now really interested in his life.

he sighed, "honestly? i was getting tired of deployments. they felt endless and i wanted to start some sort of life, plus my dad retired from being a firefighter up here and convinced me to apply." he chuckled a bit before explaining his dad's persuasions. "he promised me that there is no shortage of gorgeous women around here, and he was right i have to admit." he smiled before looking me up and down.

"what was your name?" i asked the firefighter.

"asher sullivan. but everyone calls me sully." he said, now smiling.

"sully." i repeated as the kindergartners began trickling in and taking their seats. "kids, we have a very special guest! everyone meet my good friend, firefighter sully." i said to the students.

"hi, sully!" the students all collectively said.

i gave sully a nod, "the floor is yours." i said as i backed away to my desk to observe the lecture from afar.

1:30pm

i stood outside with the kids as sully handed each of them plastic firefighter helmets. "alright kiddos, i hope you all understand stop, drop, and roll now." he said as he opened the door to his firefighter car.

"yes because there will be a quiz." i warned them jokingly.

sully chuckled before asking the kids some questions. "why should you stop drop and roll?"

"to put out a fire?" one of the kids suggested.

"yeah!" sully praised.

i smiled as the kids asked questions and answered them. it was adorable watching them interact with sully, they seemed pleased with what they had learned.

"i say we get some candy for paying attention." i told the kids as the assistant teacher led them all back inside. i turned to sully who was only leaning on his car now, "that was fun, learning about the firefighter-y stuff." i said.

"yeah i have my moments, glad you all enjoyed it." he said with a smile.

i nodded, "the kids did. and so did i."

he smiled, "now what about me, anything you liked from me?" he said with a grin. i could tell he was trying to flirt.

"oh, well...that suit looks great on you." i said, it was true. he wore a black short sleeve firefighter shirt with black slacks with polished black shoes. he looked very professional, and the outfit really complimented his body type. "and i'm sure the ladies love it." i added with a chuckle.

he laughed, "they do." he looked down at his watch. "i have to go get ready for the rest of the day, it was nice meeting you, miss. boyd" sully told me.

i shook my head, "the kids aren't around, you can refer to me as jamie." i told him with a smile. "but, it was good meeting you. now i have to go give them the quiz they were promised." i said, looking back at the doors of the school. "you have a very important job, please stay safe." i said before turning on my heel and making my way back inside.

halfway through walking back to the school, i stopped in my tracks. maybe it was his evident flirting or it was the uniform, but something made me go back to his car.

"how would you like to go to a wedding?" i questioned.

"a wedding?" he said with a smile. "you've got my attention."

"my best friend, charlotte, she's getting married to my brother, and i'd love to go accompanied by you." i told the man.

he raised his eyebrows, "i don't usually date people i've rescued..." he said in a joking tone.

"well i didn't have to stop, drop and roll now, did i?" i said, meaning that i didn't have to put out any fires.

"alright, you're right. i didn't rescue you," he said with a smirk.

"yep, there's an open bar. everyone's encouraged to bring a date, and you're my date. it's gonna be fun." i said to him.

"a gorgeous woman inviting me to a wedding? and it's for a good friend of yours?" he summarized.

i nodded, smiling, "that about sums it up." i confirmed.

"i'm in, so long as i get to dance with you." he said.

i chuckled, "the dancing is my favorite part."

he wrote down his number on a random piece of paper from his car and handed it to me. "text me where and when, i'll be there." he said.

"you got it." i said before heading back inside.

THE RIVERSIDE CHURCH
new york, new york
1pm

i entered the bridal suite to see a dolled up charlotte surrounded by her dolled up friends. "charlotte honey, you look so beautiful." i complimented.

she smiled as she twirled around in her wedding dress. "thank you, jamie!" she chirped. "i am so excited, i can hardly stand it." she squealed.

"well, the wedding starts soon. you're gonna be the most beautiful bride!" i exclaimed, smiling.

charlotte grinned, she was so happy. i was so happy for her. her life had turned out for the better and i was more than glad to be apart of her journey.

a knock was heard at the door and dakota's voice then followed it, "jamie, are you in there? they want us to walk now." he expressed.

ever since we were kids he'd tell me that he wanted me to be his best man. during his previous marriage, i refused as i didn't approve who he was marrying. but for this wedding, i was more than willing.

"coming!" i called out.

"and don't come in here, it's bad luck for you to see the bride!" carrie yelled out to dakota.

"yeah, i know!" he yelled through the door.

i gently placed a kiss on charlotte's cheek.

she smiled, "i love you." she said sincerely.

i looked at her, tears in my eyes at how happy she was. "i love you too, char." i replied before letting go of her hand and walking out of the bridal suite.

1:30pm

standing behind dakota, i scanned the audience before my eyes landed on sully. i sent him a small wave. he smiled back, i bit back an even bigger smile before looking at the entrance doors as jemma walked down the aisle, as a flower girl.

she looked so gorgeous and mature in her dress, and walked so delicately as if she had a piece of glass with every step.

after she made her way to the front, all the bridesmaids began making their way down the aisle. samantha first, secondly came miranda, followed by carrie and eventually the bride.

charlotte looked amazing. her silk poofy gown was simply gorgeous. it made her look more mature and really completed the look of the wedding. i took a deep breath as i watched her walk down the aisle.

finally, she got to her spot next to my brother and the ceremony began. it was a gorgeous ceremony. my brother looked amazing and char looked like an angel.

after they kissed and exchanged rings, it was announced for them to be husband and wife.

i clapped and whooed alongside the crowd. i felt great. life was finally falling together for char, she was finally happy.

dakota and charlotte walked back down the aisle hand in hand as the crowd threw rice at them.

"congratulations dakota and charlotte!" i shouted as they were being bombarded with rice.

i walked outside, now standing next to sully. "that was really nice, huh?" i remarked as we observed the other attendees talking.

he chuckled, "i had fun. it's nice to actually watch a wedding ceremony for once." he said, laughing a bit.

i turned to him, "for once? how many do you attend?!" i laughed a bit at his previous statement.

"i'm a firefighter, we go to a lot of weddings. or at least to my station it feels that way, i'm always getting invited to someones wedding by one of the other guys." he replied with a smile.

i raised my eyebrows, "that's a lot of weddings." i said with an amused smile.

"tell me about it." he mused as the bridesmaids and bride began to get photos together.

"jamie! get in this!" charlotte exclaimed.

"oh, i wasn't a bridesmaid." i said, not wanting to intrude in on the photo.

"we need you!" she exclaimed. i chuckled a bit, walking over to the girls for photos.

after the photos, the wedding party was lead back in side for refreshments while everyone else found seats.

sitting at a table with sully, miranda, carrie, and samantha as the bride and groom sat at their own table.

"have i introduced you all to sully? this is sully. silly, meet my friends miranda, samantha and carrie." i introduced.

the girls all smiled and said hi.

sully shook everyone's hand. "it's a pleasure to meet you." he said as the waiters began serving our tables.

"she's so damn happy." miranda pointed out as she took a long sip of her champagne.

"i take it speed dating didn't go well." carrie said.

miranda scoffed, "no, carrie. it didn't. because no one wants to date a lawyer! a flight attendant, sure, but a lawyer? no!"

"hey, where's richard?" i asked samantha.

"oh, he was here for the service but had to cut the night short. duty calls." she said.

"i wonder if men wear anything under their kilts." miranda randomly said.

i looked at sully to make sure they weren't scaring him off yet before awkwardly chuckling, "where'd you get that idea?"

"well at some weddings the groomsmen wear kilts, so i guess i just started thinking." she answered.

"they do wear something under, but it's easy to get off." samantha replied nonchalantly.

"good to know." carrie answered.

"hey, where's aidan?" i asked carrie who sat dateless.

she let out a sigh, "truth is, things have been rough ever since he took me to his house on the country." she confessed.

"why?" miranda asked.

"well, big called me and he was in a bad place. he was drunk, his girlfriend just broke up with him...so i invited him to the house. he came, a storm hit and he had to spend the night." she answered.

"i'm sorry, you invited big to your boyfriend's house? big as in the same man that you cheated on that same boyfriend with?" i said, making sure i heard her right.

"well when you put it that way..." she muttered.

"well that's how it went, is it not?" i asked her.

she scoffed, "big and i are friends now. aidan respects that, at least now he does."

"you seriously believe that aidan respects that you're now friends with the man who you cheated on him with?" i asked her.

she nodded confidently. "he's come to terms with my friendship with big, we're onto the next step. aidan moved in."

"wow!" miranda exclaimed in hopes of changing the topic as the tension was palpable.

i looked at sully, "i'm sorry." i whispered.

he shook his head, "no i'm entertained!" he said quietly, smiling and laughing a bit as the conversation continued. "and if it was me, i'd be pissed." he said referring to if he were in aidan's shoes.

i chuckled a bit, "you, sully, you're a saint." i told him before taking a sip of my champagne.

he shook his head with a smirk, "not when you get me alone, jamie." he replied.
