i walked down the hall, a cup of coffee in hand as my school bag was slung over one shoulder. i sipped the hot liquid, the caffeine already beginning to make me feel more awake.

i was about to turn the corner when i heard my name from behind. i stopped and turned to see the schools principal, mr. taylor, walking toward me.

"miss boyd, just the person i wanted to see." he said as he approached me, a smile on his face, which was abnormal. he never really smiled unless he needed something, and i never necessarily liked mr. taylor. he often seemed rude.

"mr. taylor." i greeted, trying to hide the annoyance in my voice. "what can i do for you?"

he came to a stop in front of me, folding his hands in front of himself. "how have you been doing?" he asked, his tone light but knowing him, nothing was an innocent question.

i paused for a moment when hearing the question. he never cared to ask how i was doing. "i'm fine, thank you." i said simply. "and yourself?"

"fantastic." he said before clearing his throat. "listen, i wanted to discuss something with you." he said seriously.

i arched an eyebrow, growing more curious and suspicious. "discuss what?"

he took a deep breath before folding his arms. "so there's a school event tonight that i need you to work." he stated.

i paused, a frown immediately appearing on my face at the mention of having to work. "what kind of event is it?" i asked, not liking where this was going. i never really participated or worked during these events.

"just a little fundraiser." he said as if it wasn't a big deal. "selling raffles, taking pictures, helping out with the food and drinks...that sort of thing." he explained.

i let out an annoyed sigh, already dreading the night. "and why exactly am i the person you're asking?" i asked out of curiosity.

he then gave me a not-so-kind smile before speaking. "because, miss boyd, you never participate in school events. and the school needs the help, especially as a humanities teacher. don't flake on me or else this could reflect your career." he stated. "tonight, seven pm."

i felt anger growing inside of me as he spoke. "so i either do it or it effects my career?" i repeated, my voice laced with anger.

"essentially, yes." he said simply.

i let out a scoff as i shook my head, still angry. "lovely." i muttered. "anything else?" i asked bitingly.

he gave me a sly smile, "no, that's all." he said as he began to turn away. "oh and bring a baked good!" he called out.

"hey, miranda. did you get my email about our double whatever it is?" carrie questioned as she took a bite of her salad.

"yes and i'm ignoring it." miranda replied. "why would i go out with steve?"

"no, no, no! you're not going out with steve. you're going as my airbag, in case there's an impact." carrie explained. "and steve's going as aidan's airbag."

i cleared my throat. "let me get this right, after you saw aidan at the bar opening you thought he looked so good that you emailed him?" i asked carrie.

"don't leave out the fact that she downloaded gmail to email him," miranda added.

carrie rolled her eyes. "yes, you're right. i want to give us another try, if he's willing. so me, aidan, steve and miranda are all hanging out...you know so aidan can remember this cute gal."

"can you explain to steve that this isn't a double date? i don't want him to get the wrong impression." miranda said.

"why don't i just invite duncan and jamie tonight? because duncan has a girlfriend it definitely won't be weird." carrie suggested.

i immediately shook my head, "no. absolutely not. and even if i wanted to, my boss is making me work for this event tonight."

"listen, i'm serious about this not being a double date. it'd be weird since i'm seeing other people..." miranda said.

"who?" samantha inquired.

"marathon man?" charlotte asked.

"yes. we slept together after our run," miranda said referring to the man she ran next to during her marathon training. "it was good except he kind of...licked my butt." she said causing us all to drop our forks.

"be specific. you mean the cheeks or-" samantha asked.

"it was more localized than that." miranda said.

"are we talking tuchis-lingus?" carrie said.

"i'm afraid so. and i thought it was weird. it's weird, right? i mean, are we doing this now?" miranda rambled.

"if the guy is willing, why not?" samantha said.

"anyone other than samantha?" miranda replied.

"no, no, i never had a guy do the tl on me. nope!" carrie answered. "it almost happened but i got the feeling that he kind of lost his way."

"yeah, can't say i have." i answered before taking another bite of my salad.

"dakota likes to do it." charlotte replied, making me immediately lose my appetite.

"okay, i'm definitely in the slow sexual group if even charlotte is open to this." miranda said.

"there's something happening with men and the ass..." samantha pointed out.

"what like ass is now on the menu?" carrie questioned.

"i bet there's one loud mouthed guy who found some woman who loved it and told everybody, "women love this!"" miranda quipped.

"who is this guy?" i asked.

"and who's the woman who loved it?" miranda asked.

samantha laughed, "don't lock it until you try it."

"we've found our culprit." i said jokingly.

"oh come on! how does holden like it?" samantha asked.

"we haven't gotten that far in the relationship." i said simply.

samantha nodded. "i always forget you love to take things slowly."

"it's because of her parents." carrie chimed in.

"thanks, carrie." i mumbled as i took another sip of my coffee. i hated when people brought up my parents' failed marriage without at least a warning.

"what?" carrie exclaimed with a slight shrug. "i'm just saying." she said before taking a bite of her food.

i rolled my eyes. "things between us have been going smoothly, steadily, and perfectly." i said.

"you didn't just say "perfectly", did you?" miranda said.

"what?" i questioned.

samantha chuckled before speaking. "perfection is a very big word, especially when it comes to guys."

i felt my eyebrows furrowed as i looked at her as if saying i didn't agree with her. "what's wrong with saying 'perfect'?" i questioned.

"you just don't want to jinx it, sweetie." said carrie.

"and who's to say that jinxing it is an actual thing?" i muttered, clearly not wanting to give this silly idea the time of day.

miranda raised an eyebrow. "are you really trying to justify jinxing right now?"

"i just think it's ridiculous that you think i'm jinxing things by saying it's perfect." i countered back before sighing.

"it's not that you're jinxing things. it's the fact that nothing is ever perfect when it comes to dating." carrie reasoned.

"all i meant was that things are going perfectly." i insisted.

"and they are." carrie said with a smile before adding, "for now..."

"come on. just let her be happy." charlotte chimed in before taking a sip of her drink.

"thank you." i replied to charlotte.

JAMIE'S BROWNSTONE APARTMENT
new york, new york
5:45pm

with charlotte's help, i baked peanut butter cookies for tonight's fundraiser at the school.

"i'm just so happy, jamie. seriously," she told me.

"well that's good sweetie, i'm glad." i answered.

she sighed, "i feel like i owe you something, i mean you brought this amazing man into my life."

i chuckled. "you don't owe me anything charlotte. i introduced you to him and you did the rest. where is he anyway?"

"he's working late tonight, he's finishing up a project." she answered.

i hummed as i began to carefully transfer cookies to a container. "that's gotta suck for you." i teased.

"i'm moving in with him." she said suddenly.

"oh yeah? to his new park avenue apartment?" i said jokingly.

"yep, to his new park avenue apartment." she said a huge smile growing on her face.

i set down the container and looked over at her in shock. "wait, you're serious?"

she nodded happily. "he asked me to move in with him earlier this week." she confirmed.

i felt myself smiling along with her. "charlotte, that's amazing. i'm so happy for you." i said genuinely.

just then there was a knock at my front door. "i'll be right back." i said to charlotte.

i walked out of the kitchen and to the front door, slightly confused as to who would be banging at my front door at an ungodly time.

i opened the door and my annoyance immediately shifted to surprise. standing in front of me, was jemma and luca. the two smiled awkwardly.

i couldn't help but raise an eyebrow as i looked at the two of them. "hey, guys...what's up?" i questioned.

jemma's eyes glanced behind me, looking passed me to the interior of my apartment. "can we hang out in here?" she asked.

i paused for a moment before stepping to the side and opening the door wider. "come on in." i said, gesturing for them to come in. "charlotte's in the kitchen with cookies."

"oh you shouldn't have told me that. i have this thing where i eat cookies way more often that i should," luca admitted.

"especially when he's nervous." jemma whispered.

"help yourself to a couple but don't eat them all, because i need them for this fundraiser." i stated.

they both nodded before heading further into the apartment towards the kitchen. i shut the door, sighing in annoyance, before watching as they laid out on the couch immediately searching for the remote.

i walked into the kitchen where charlotte placed three cookies on a plate. "one for each and then one that they'd split," she said with a wink before she walked the plate into the living room.

i chuckled at her logic. "very fair." i said in response. i stood by the counter, watching as the two sat there, arguing about what to watch on the tv.

6:30pm

after a while of chatting with charlotte, i made my way to the front where i noticed that the two teenagers were fully engaged in the movie, not even eating taking a bite from the cookies.

"bye you two!" i called out.

they both jumped out of the sudden noise, being pulled out of the movie. jemma looked at me and luca just looked a little confused.

"wait, where are you going?" luca questioned from his spot on the couch.

"a function at my job that they're holding." i explained before swinging the front door open only to see dakota, my brother. "oh look! charlotte, your fiancee is here!" i announced, putting an emphasis on the word fiancee.

"my dad is here?" jemma called out, sounding a bit nervous.

"your dad?" i heard luca say before i noticed the two moving around and luca shoving a cookie down his throat.

he stepped into the apartment and noticed jemma and the young boy on the couch. "what's going on here?" dakota asked.

"uh, we're just hanging out..." luca mumbled, sounding a bit nervous, still chewing his cookie.

"yeah, we're watching a movie." jemma chimed in.

i could see dakota eyeing the boy, clearly wanting to say something. he raised an eyebrow. "and who's your friend jemm?" he questioned.

"him? he's just a friend." she replied.

i could see dakota nodding as he watched the two of them. "just a 'friend?'" he questioned again. "if he's just a friend why is he not watching tv at our apartment? instead you're hiding out at your aunts?"

jemma rolled her eyes. "we just wanted to hang out, okay?" she replied.

"yeah, we're just hanging." luca repeated, finishing the cookie. "this cookie is great." he complimented.

"thanks! i usually get nervous about baking cookies especially peanut butter ones, it's so bold but...they are good, huh?" i replied.

suddenly luca got a horrified look on his face. at first i thought it was because of dakota but i quickly realized it was the cookies. "i'm allergic to peanut butter..." he muttered.

"you're allergic?!" i said loudly, sounding panicked. "are you okay?! do you feel it happening?"

he looked up at me and nodded. "i think i'm starting to feel it come on."

i felt my eyes go wide. "should i call an ambulance?" i questioned frantically.

"it'll take way too long!" charlotte said, trying to stay calm.

"what about the doctor you walked me to? when i was sick?!" jemma asked in a panicked state.

"okay, let's go!" i commanded, practically shoving out charlotte, jemma, luca, and dakota out the apartment. i locked the door and ran down to the sidewalk to hail a cab.

TOTAL HEALTH & WELLNESS MEDICAL CENTER
new york, new york
7:10pm

the cab came to a stop and we all got out of the vehicle. we made our way into the medical center in a panic, hoping that there were available doctors there to help luca out.

"hi! this eighteen year old boy, luca andel is having an allergic reaction after eating a peanut butter cookie and he doesn't have an epipen." i explained to the woman at the front desk in as much detail as possible.

we all waited anxiously for her response, the three of us practically bouncing on our feet.

"come this way in room 12." she exclaimed, as she pressed a buzzer to allow us into the room.

we all quickly began to walk towards the room with as much speed as we could, without seeming rude in the medical facility. we all reached room twelve and went inside, luca sitting on the table while the rest of us stood by, on edge. i secretly was wishing that duncan wasn't working today.

"can someone call my dad?" luca said weakly.

"i'll do it." i said before anyone else had the chance to respond. i pulled out my phone and quickly dialed holden's number.

he answered almost immediately. "hello?"

i exhaled before responding, feeling extremely guilty. "holden, hi...uh i'm with luca..." i said slowly, trying to word my sentence delicately. i could hear him hum, probably waiting for me to tell him what happened. "please don't freak out..." i said quietly.

"why should i not freak out?" he asked suddenly, sounding a bit alarmed. "what happened?"

"he had an allergic reaction to a peanut butter cookie..." i said. "i'm at the total health and wellness center now with him."

there was a pause on the line for a few beats before he spoke up again. "why would you let him eat a peanut butter cookie?!" he questioned loudly.

"i didn't know he was allergic..." i responded, feeling guilty. "i would have never given him one knowing that he was deathly allergic."

"god damn it..." i heard him mutter before he sighed heavily. "i'm on my way. what room are you in?"

"room twelve." i responded quickly.

"be there in ten minutes." he said before hanging up the phone.

"he's on his way. i'm so sorry, kid," i said to luca.

he shrugged slightly. "i feel like it's my fault." he mumbled before coughing.

"hey, hey. no it's not your fault." i reassured quickly. "how were you supposed to know?"

he exhaled, resting his head against the table. "you're right. how could i know?" he said, before suddenly going into another coughing fit.

"where is this doctor?" dakota complained just as the door opened, revealing a duncan in work attire.

duncan walked further into the room, eyes scanning the group before resting on me. "what's going on here?" he questioned, eyes lingering on me a little longer.

"luca is having an allergic reaction to peanut butter." i explained quickly, watching him as he began to wash his hands.

he nodded before approaching the table. "so peanut butter, hmm?" he said jokingly to luca.

"not exactly the most ideal thing to be allergic to..." luca responded, managing to maintain some of his sense of humor.

"it could be worse, you could be allergic to water." duncan suggested jokingly as he picked up a pen, preparing to take his temperature.

"something that rufus isn't." i said referring to duncan's dog who loves the water.

"that golden retriever loves anything and everything wet." duncan said with a laugh, taking luca's temperature. "even snow but he likes to eat it, too."

"he would..." i said, chuckling at the thought of duncan's massive golden retriever running around eating snow instead of playing in it.

duncan started doing some normal, routine questions before asking the most obvious one. "alright, friend. where's that epipen of yours?"

"i can't find it." luca explained weakly.

"alright. i'm gonna give you a little adrenaline now." duncan said, preparing the injection.

"go for it." luca responded.

the shot was quick and soon enough, duncan was disposing of the needle. "you know, i don't normally see 18 year olds since they age out of the whole pediatrician care thing...but i'll make an acceptation." he said looking at me.

"thank you, doctor wright." i said with a smile. just then, holden came storming in.

he came into the room, taking note of us as he entered. his eyes widened as he saw luca on the table, looking a little worse for the wear. "how is he doing?" he asked quickly.

"he's doing better." duncan responded, still standing near the table. "i'm gonna keep him here for a little bit to see how the injection effects him."

"you're keeping him here?" holden questioned anxiously. "for how long?"

"only a few hours." duncan said.

hearing "a few hours" made me check the time. 7:30, i was late to the school function. "shoot..." i muttered.

"did you say something?" duncan questioned, eyes on me again.

"i have a function to go to that the school is sponsoring." i explained, still feeling guilty for what happened. "but i'm missing it and he said "my career depends on my attendance at it."

"well, you better go then." holden said gruffly.

i noticed holden's angry expression and sighed, "holden-"

he interrupted before i could finish. "just go. i think you've done quite enough." he stated, voice firm.

i didn't say anything in response, i just nodded before exiting the room, leaving the door open and heading for the front desk with a panging feeling in my chest. i made it outside.

"jamie!" i heard someone yell out.

i looked back only to see my brother, "yes?"

"look, i don't appreciate you hosting hangouts at your house for those two when i don't know about it. just look what happened!" dakota argued.

"well, dakota. i didn't know that you weren't in the know about their hangouts." i countered as it started to drizzle.

"i don't appreciate finding out that you were allowing the two to hangout without me knowing." he pointed out. "god, i mean what would've happened if things were seriously bad tonight? i didn't even know if jemma was seeing anyone!"

"first off," i said firmly. "they're 18 now, they're almost adults. secondly, that's on jemma for not mentioning that she was seeing someone."

he shook his head. "that's not the point." he said back.

"then what is the point? cause you haven't exactly told me!" i exclaimed.

"the point is that i am still her father and i have a right to know who is around my daughter." he stated, sounding frustrated.

"yes, but she is also an adult that can make her own decisions." i argued back with the same level of frustration. "next step is college, remember?" i looked up as it started to pour down on me. "look, i can't do this right now, dakota!"

he exhaled, clearly still frustrated. "fine." he responded.

"bye." i said simply.

STUYVESANT HIGH SCHOOL
new york, new york
8pm

i rushed into the cafeteria, hair and clothes dripping with rain water. my whole dress was completely drenched and i was already starting to shiver from being stuck in the rain. the event had already started and all the teachers were standing by at the makeshift bar in the corner of the cafeteria. some faces looked at me with annoyance as i walked in.

mr. taylor came over, looking a little annoyed. "you're late." he stated, gesturing to my wet dress.

i exhaled heavily. "yeah, i am i know."

"late for a good reason i hope?" he questioned, eyes scanning over me.

"family emergency, sir." i responded honestly, hoping he would believe me.

he exhaled, seeming a little annoyed. "a 'family emergency'?" he said firmly, not exactly buying my excuse.

"yes a family emergency." i said, my voice underlying the annoyance.

he crossed his arms, leaning on his left hip as he looked me up and down again. "care to elaborate on that 'emergency'?" he asked, a bit of a challenge in his tone.

"my niece and her friend were at my home when they ate the peanut butter cookies and her friend got an allergic reaction. he had to be rushed to the nearest doctor." i explained.

he nodded, almost in a dismissive tone. "is that so?" he said indifferently.

"yeah." i answered simply, trying not to get annoyed. "that...is...so..."

his eyes scanned my dress again, noticing the way it clung to my body.  he smirked faintly. "are you cold?" he questioned, eyes on my legs.

"i'm extremely cold, so i'm hoping you'll instruct me on what i need to do so that i can get it done." i replied.

"you can go home." he said through clenched teeth.

"i'm sorry?" i said.

"you heard me. go home." he gestured to the door. "you're already late, your dress is soaking wet, and you're cold and shivering. as your superior, i suggest you go home."

i exhaled in annoyance. "i don't understand why you're telling me to go home."

"there's no way you can help. so go home." he stated.

"okay, i'll see you tomorrow then." i said.

he shook his head, "take tomorrow off. we'll have someone sub your classes."

"what? why?" i asked.

"i told you, if you did not make it tonight then it will effect your career." he said before pouring a drink for a parent.

"but-"

"nope." he said, cutting me off before walking away.

i sighed, defeated. i turned on my heel and headed to the door. the rain was still pouring, and i still looked like a drowned rat. i put my head down as i walked through the rain and in the direction of my apartment.

JAMIE'S BROWNSTONE APARTMENT
new york, new york
9pm

after about thirty minutes in the rain i finally made it back to my apartment. my teeth chattered and chills ran down my spine as i walked inside, flipping the lights on. i quickly went into the bathroom and stripped down to just my undergarments before slipping into my robe.

i was just about to exit the bathroom, but suddenly i heard a knock on the door. i groaned, who was coming to see me at ten o'clock at night in the middle of a rainstorm? quickly exiting the bathroom, i made my way to the front door.

i looked through the peephole only to be greeted by a sight i didn't expect. standing there on my welcome mat was duncan.

i exhaled as i opened the door. "duncan what are you doing here?" i asked, still clutching the robe around me.

"i wanted to inform you that the kid is okay. i gave him homework to look for his epipen." he said simply before taking in my form, clad in just a robe. "and you look cozy." he joked, eyes lingering on my form again.

"yeah, well it's better than being drenched in the rain." i said, shivering as a gust of wind blew in. "do you want to come in? you're getting wet."

"wouldn't hurt." he said as he stepped through the door, closing it behind him. i wrapped the robe tighter around my body, suddenly feeling a little self-conscious in just a robe in front of duncan.

he followed me into the hallway that led to the living room before sitting down on the couch, i followed and sat down as well, making sure the robe wasn't exposing anything.

"so, luca is okay then?" i asked, adjusting the robe.

he nodded, eyes on me again. "he's fine, he just needs to be more responsible with his epipen. he should carry one on him at all times."

i nodded along, shifting slightly. the robe was riding up a little bit, duncan noticed. i rubbed it down and spoke again, "so how was his dad about the whole thing?"

duncan exhaled. "he was upset, of course. but he'll get over it, probably just lecture the kid later on."

i nodded, noticing that duncan's gaze never left me as i shifted. he was clearly checking me out. "he's not upset with the kid, i think he's upset with me." i said.

"he's upset with you?" duncan repeated, a bit amused by my comment. "why would he be upset with you?"

"they were my peanut butter cookies." i said.

he exhaled, clearly trying not to laugh. "yeah, those were your cookies. i can't blame you for being a good cook." he joked.

"it's not funny, duncan." i said firmly.

"okay, i'm sorry. i'll stop." he said still trying not to laugh. "no need to get all upset."

i felt a need to change the subject, "how's amelia?" i said referring to his girlfriend.

he shrugged, "i don't know."

"you don't know?" i questioned, surprised by his response.

"we broke up a few days ago." he said in a flat tone.

"oh." i said quietly. "i'm sorry."

he exhaled. "it's alright. it wasn't all that serious anyway, we were only together for a few months."

i nodded along, shifting on the couch again. the robe still seemed to be riding up. i pulled it down again, duncan took note. "do you want something to drink?"

"whatever you have in your fridge will do." he answered before looking away from me, as if suddenly realizing his gaze.

i stood up from the couch, "make yourself at home. i'll be right back."

he nodded. "thanks."

i made my way around the corner and over to the refrigerator, opening it up i was searching for something to give him. i felt a presence behind me and suddenly duncan came up from behind me, standing very close. i suddenly stiffened, eyes widening as he stood behind me.

he stood close, his hand brushed against mine, opening the fridge wider. my breathing became heavier, i could feel him behind me. his breath against my neck as he studied the drinks in the fridge.

he picked a beer out, but he was still standing quite close behind me. "this okay?" he asked quietly, voice low and deep by my ear. i couldn't help but shiver.

"uh...y-yeah, that's fine." i said shakily.

he still stood close, almost up against me. "good." he said, voice still low and i could almost feel his gaze on me.

i slowly backed away, eyes on him. he seemed different, and there was a strange look in his eye. he exhaled, a smirk playing on his lips. "what were you going to drink?" he asked.

"i'll have a beer too." i replied.

he nodded. "works for me." he leaned down against the counter, popping off the cap on his beer, and taking a swig afterwards. i grabbed another beer, popping the cap off. "you look nice." he said suddenly.

i looked at him, eyebrow raised. "in this?" i gestured to my robe.

he exhaled, eyes scanning over me. "yeah." he said in almost a whisper.

i looked away, feeling suddenly embarrassed. the robe wasn't leaving much to the imagination; the thin material just barely covered my butt, the back of the robe dipping low, giving a little more cleavage up top. i took a few steps away, trying to make a little more space in between. "i should go change." i said quickly.

"wait. i wanted to apologize to you, for the way i blew up after i heard that guy kissed you." he said. "i've been cheated on a couple of times in my past and just got...scared." he said, suddenly sounding more vulnerable.

i nodded, feeling a pang of guilt for not explaining the situation. "it's okay, i should've told you what happened right after." i said, taking a swig of the beer.

he nodded, "yeah, you probably should've." he said lightheartedly.

suddenly a chill ran through my body, causing me to shiver. "damn...i'm still cold." i said under my breath, bringing the beer bottle up to my lips again, taking a swig.

"so am i." he said as he took a long swig from his, our eyes locked on each others.

the next few minutes were just silent glances, no words being said. i was trying to avoid his gaze, but he was seemingly finding it hard to look away. he was just staring at me, eyes slowly raking over me, his lips playing a light smirk.

suddenly, he placed his beer on the counter and met me in a deep kiss.

i felt his arms loop around my waist as his lips pressed against mine in a bruising kiss. i wrapped my free arms around his neck, one hand ran through his hair while the other held my beer.

the kiss grew deeper with each passing second, a heat building in my stomach. his lips moved from my mouth, to my neck, to my collarbone, leaving a hot trail behind them.

my head was spinning, the alcohol from the beer was suddenly hitting me. my robe slipped off of my shoulder and exposing more skin. he gently pushed me against the counter, pressing his body against mine, the cool surface against my back.

"is this a bad idea?" i asked him.

he exhaled, "maybe." his eyes never left mine. his body was up against me, pinning me to the counter. he was so close, i could smell the musky scent of his cologne.
