sitting at brunch with the girls in our usual spot, charlotte let us all take turns observing her hand where a beautiful, oval, diamond ring sat.

"i mean i can't believe it! i mean i can believe it, i can't believe it- i just!" charlotte rambled on.

"you said "i mean" twice, sweetie." carrie pointed out as she took a sip of her coffee.

"so what? hell if i had that kind of ring i'd be jumping the walls." samantha said as she winked at charlotte.

"that's the most beautiful and expensive ring i've ever seen." i said as we watched charlotte admire it. "dakota seriously outdid himself." i was honestly proud of my brother, this ring was much better than diana's...his ex wife.

"i know!" she exclaimed. "i couldn't believe it when he pulled the box out. it was so gorgeous. i still am having a hard time believing it!" charlotte said as she shook her head in disbelief.

"didn't you come see us with that same ring on because you found it?" miranda pointed out.

"that does sound familiar." i joked.

"shh don't remind me of that!" charlotte said jokingly, her cheeks flushed.

i laughed softly and spoke in a more serious tone, "is anyone free tonight? i have an extra ticket to holden's hockey game."

carrie immediately shook her head. "can't. big and i are going to dinner." she said receiving glares from miranda and i, "as friends." she added.

"what about you?" i asked, my question directed to charlotte.

she sighed, a happy sigh. "i'm taking jemma out for dinner. some girl on girl time."

"okay, you?" i looked at samantha.

she slightly shook her head, "sorry sweetie, i got a last minute invite to this book signing event."

"i'm sorry but how are you getting invited to book signing events? i'm the writer!" carrie exclaimed.

i rolled my eyes at her antics and turned to miranda. "and then there were two."

she shrugged, "i can never turn down a game. especially if it comes with you."

"great." i said as the waiter refilled my coffee. "i'm excited. two gals, one game."

"and one guy." carrie stated. "let's face it, you're a "puck hunny"."

i shook my head, "the hell's a "puck hunny"?"

"women who go to hockey games to stare at the guys and not watch the game." she explained, taking a sip of her coffee.

i scoffed. "excuse me but i'm there to see one guy. a coach and he happened to have given me free tickets."

"yeah...you're still a "puck hunny" sweetie," carrie said as she tapped my shoulder, leaving no room for disagreements.

i rolled my eyes, "whatever."

samantha laughed, "i'm going to have to get me one of those."

miranda was talking as we made our way down to our front row seats of tonight's hockey game. the new york raiders versus the new jersey devils. the two were notable rivals.

"i still cannot believe charlotte is engaged! i mean, of course it's amazing...it's charlotte. but dakota is so..." she paused. "what's the word?"

i let out a hum as i tried to think of ways to describe my brother. "annoying?" i guessed.

"no." she said.

"how about-" i was about to say before miranda interrupted me.

"perfect! he's completely perfect. he's cute, tall, rich, respectful...and he treats her how she deserves to be treated." she went on. "and she found him so quickly. how hard is it to find someone like that for us, huh?" she complained as i watched as holden came into my viewpoint. he was now talking to another coach.

i felt my stomach do a small flip as i took in his tall, muscular form. i loved how he stood with such confidence. his dark hair was styled effortlessly with a few pieces falling over his face. he was wearing a black blazer, a plain white t-shirt, jeans and sneakers. a simple but oh so handsome look.

"you're staring." miranda said to me, snapping me out of my staring. i could hear the smirk in her voice.

"shut up." i mumbled. "there's a lot to observe here." i added, gesturing to the ice below us.

it was hard to focus on anything other than holden who was now walking down the tunnel and toward where we were sitting. i knew i shouldn't think about him but damn it, he was hard to ignore. my eyes followed him as he got closer.

holden continued walking our way, glancing around at the arena for a moment as he spoke on his phone. his gaze met mine as he continued to walk closer. a small, yet noticeable smirk tugged at the corner of his lips as he looked directly at me. holden finished his conversation on the phone and placed it back in his pocket.

miranda nudged my side with her elbow and leaned in close to me. she whispered in my ear with excitement in her voice. "look who's coming this way."

i glanced at miranda, a look of slight annoyance on my face. "i can't help but look, he's walking right toward us." i muttered back. i could see a small smirk on her face.

holden stopped in front of the two of us and smiled. "evening, ladies."

"holden, hi." i said as i sat up a little bit straighter. "these seats are amazing, thanks again."

he nodded his head, his smile growing, "my pleasure." his eyes moved over to miranda for a moment. "miranda, good seeing you again."

miranda smiled at him, "good to be seen." she said cordially before looking at the empty ice.

"you know..." i said, looking at him. "you're putting me in the line of fire over here."

he chuckled softly, folding his arms across his chest, "the chances of getting hit by a puck here is slim to none."

"really?" i asked, raising a skeptical eyebrow. "how do you know that, coach?"

he shrugged, "my team is damn near perfect is how i know."

"someone's cocky." i pointed out.

"no, i'm just realistic." he countered. "we're gonna kick the devils asses tonight."

"you were a hockey player before a coach, yes?" miranda asked.

he smiled, a smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth once more, "correct. i was pretty good too if i do say so myself." he answered.

"have you ever lost any teeth?" miranda asked before sucking her two front teeth with her tongue as if it hurt to think about.

he laughed loudly, "i've had a few chipped, but it's not noticeable." he said, his eyes moving to me. "why? are you worried a random puck is gonna knock out your two front teeth?"

"well we are extremely close." i quipped.

"very close." he said in agreement, his gaze moving over my face. i could've sworn i saw his eyes linger on my lips before looking away. "you look nice tonight, by the way."

heat spread across my cheeks at his comment. "thank you." i said, smoothing down my skirt. i wore a red mini skirt, a black fitted turtleneck...both paired with black tights and jewelry. "you don't look bad yourself."

he chuckled and glanced down at his attire. "well thank you, i'm glad my suit and t-shirt gets your approval." he joked. the fact that he had on a blazer and jeans with a perfectly fitting t-shirt was hot. no question.

"you can never go wrong with jeans and a t-shirt." i said, a small smirk on my lips as i looked up at him.

"agreed." he replied as his gaze flicked over to the ice for a moment before returning to me.

"well hey, go do your thing. coach them on how to quick some ass." i said with a nod.

holden chuckled as he unfolded his arms and put his hands in his pants pockets. "yes ma'am. i hope you two have fun." he said as he started to walk away.

"we will." miranda said with a smile as i waved.

"you guys come to my office after the game, will ya?" he called out as he looked back.

i met his gaze and nodded. my stomach did a small backflip as i watched him walk away.

"oh yeah..." miranda said slowly as she nudged me.

"what?" i muttered as i looked at her, my eyes narrowing.

"you two are adorable." she teased. i was about to tell her to shut up when the lights flickered, signaling the start of the game.

we sat forward in our seats as the players skated onto the ice. there were loud cheers and chants throughout the arena as both teams got ready to play.

holden was coaching the team on, shouting out orders to the players as the game began.

the first 30 minutes of the game were fast paced and full of action. fans on both sides were on the edge of their seats, yelling, cheering, and holding their breath as the teams fought for the puck.

the score was tied at one each as the clock read 5 minutes to go. the raiders had the puck and were moving down the ice toward the devils goal.

holden was shouting directions to the players, the intensity in his voice rising with each passing minute. he was focused and determined to win this game and you could tell.

miranda and i were on the edge of our seats, watching the players speed down the ice. the noise from the crowd was deafening.

"come on, come on.." i muttered, gripping the edge of my seat.

suddenly there was a scuffle between the raiders and the devils, stick blades and fists were flying. players from both teams were yelling and pushing each other. it was chaos on the ice.

the raiders scored with only a few seconds left on the clock, resulting in immediate cheers from the fans. the game was over...the raiders had won. my eyes immediately darted to where holden was standing on the ice, looking satisfied and proud. he'd won the game.

i got up and let out a "whoo-hoo." as i looked down, i saw miranda who had just rose to her feet, now next to me. "what?" i asked.

"puck bunny." she said.

i rolled my eyes as i playfully pushed her shoulder. "shut up."

she just laughed before looping her arm through mine. "come on, lover girl. we have an office to get to."

HOLDEN'S OFFICE
MADISON SQUARE GARDEN STADIUM
new york, new york
5pm

i walked down the long wide hallway, my heels clicking against the floor. i had my arms crossed over my chest as i approached the door marked "coach". i stood outside for a moment before i gently knocked three times.

"come in." his gruff voice called out from inside the office.

i stepped into the office and slowly closed the door behind me, miranda had decided to grab a last minute bite from the concessions.

holden was currently sitting on the edge of his desk, his arms folded over his chest as he looked up at me. "there's the girl of the hour." he said.

"hey superstar." i said as i approached him.

he chuckled at my comment as he pushed off the desk and stood up straight. "that's me." he said with a smile, a slight cocky edge to his tone.

i rolled my eyes, folding my arms. "you're so humble." i teased.

he leaned back against his desk and gestured to the chair in front of him. "have a seat." he said amused.

i did as he asked and sat down on the chair, crossing my legs. "so how does it feel to be the best coach in the nhl?" i asked with a smile, arching an eyebrow.

"what is this, an interview?" he said jokingly.

i nodded. "yes, now everything you answer is extremely crucial so be careful." i said as i held up a fake mic.

he laughed before looking at me and leaning forward a bit. he placed his hands on his knees and looked me in the eye. "well, to answer your question, it's pretty incredible." he admitted. "but this team wouldn't be the best without their talented players."

"oh so you're not gonna take the credit now?" i chuckled as i tilted my head to the side. "how nice of you."

he grinned, "i'm known for my humility."

i rolled my eyes, knowing he was anything but humble.

"humility? that's debatable." i said, my voice full of sarcasm.

his smile grew, "you're full of sarcasm today." he said softly, his eyes raking over my body.

"i'm always full of sarcasm." i shot back, trying to ignore the way his eyes were on me. even if it was making my heart beat a little faster.

"that's debatable." he said, mocking my previous comment.

he looked me up and down again, his gaze lingering on my face for a second. he could be so shameless and i both loved and hated it. "you look damn good." he said, his voice gruff as he looked me in the eyes.

i looked at him in return, the air in the room suddenly thick with tension. "flattery will get you nowhere." i said with a hint of tease in my voice.

he slowly pushed himself away from the desk, now standing in front of me. "it's not flattery if it's the truth." he said as he took a step toward me, making me look up at him.

my heart skipped a beat when he was this close to me. i could smell his cologne and it was heavenly. "don't start," i muttered, my voice faltering slightly.

he chuckled softly, clearly enjoying the effect he was having on me. "start what?" he asked as he took another step, his body now right in front of me.

i took a deep breath and looked up at him, my eyes meeting his. he then pulled me into a soft yet warm kiss. i stiffened for only a second as his lips met mine before i gave into the sensation. my body immediately relaxed as i returned the kiss, all too familiar with the fire he seemed to ignite within me.

he cupped my chin, kissing me a bit more firmly than before. he pressed his tongue against my lips, asking for entrance. i granted it immediately, our kiss immediately becoming more intense.

we were so lost in each other that we failed to hear the knock on the door and then the handle twisting open. someone then called out to holden, "coach?"

holden quickly pulled away from me at the sound of the voice. i gasped lightly as i leaned back a bit in the chair.

the person who called out to holden, a man, then poked his head into the room. he had an apologetic look on his face as he said, "my bad coach, i didn't mean to interrupt-"

holden held up a hand, signalling for him to stop talking. "it's fine. what is it?" he asked, trying to keep his voice as cool and even as possible, but there was slight annoyance in his tone.

the man looked from holden to me and back to holden before quickly speaking. "the team wanted to let you know they're having some drinks to celebrate the win."

holden shook his head. "now?" he asked.

the man only nodded in response.

holden nodded as he ran a hand through his hair. "thanks. i'll be down in a minute." he said as he waited for the man to close the door. once the door was shut, holden looked back to me. "you want to join us?"

i quickly shook my head. "no." i said immediately.

he raised an eyebrow. "no?" he repeated.

"no." i said firmly. "i promised myself that i'd never be one of those girls who gets overly involved in her guy's things." i said not exactly knowing what to call it other than boyfriend, so resulting in 'guy.'

"my things?" he said with a small smirk.

i rolled my eyes. "yes, your hockey team, your coaching..." i said as i made a wide gesture with my hand, "all that."

"you're such a pain." he said as he chuckled and shook his head.

"i prefer the word 'annoying.'" i mumbled as i looked up at him.

he chuckled again, "yeah, yeah. i know you do."

"enjoy your drinks, holden." i said as i began to head to the door.

he reached out and gentlh grabbed my wrist before i could even take a few steps. "woah, woah," he said as he whisked me back towards him. i stumbled a few steps before stopping in front of him. "not even a goodbye kiss?"

i looked up at him as he held my wrist, keeping me in place. "you're so spoiled, you know that, right?" i said as i looked up at him.

he gave me a boyish grin, "i'm aware."

"and cocky." i mumbled.

"that too." he replied as he pulled my wrist again, this time causing me to fall into his chest. he let out a chuckle as i stumbled into him. "but you love it."

"debatable." i said before placing a soft kiss on his lips.

he smirked against my mouth as we kissed, his hand moving from my wrist to my waist. he gently pulled me even closer, his body now pressed against mine. "you do." he mumbled.

just then there was another knock at the door. "coach, if you're riding with us, we're leaving now!" a man yelled.

holden groaned loudly before pulling away from me. "i have to go." he muttered as he slowly untangled my body from his. "duty calls."

i rolled my eyes. "of course it does." i said before taking a step back, giving his body space.

"keep that eye rolling in check, james." he said as he backed away a bit, going back into his coach mode.

i smiled, "don't call me that again and we might have a deal."

he chuckled, "it doesn't bother you as much as you pretend it does."

i just smiled as i folded my arms over my chest. "keep telling yourself that."
