JAMIE'S BROWNSTONE APARTMENT
new york, new york
8:30pm
after the girls and i had meticulously arranged my living room space for a movie night for jemma and luca, i began check-marking everything. "okay.. popcorn." i said aloud.
"check!" carrie replied.
"and blankets?" i asked.
"check!" miranda yelled.
"drinks?" i asked.
"check!" samantha yelled, holding a champagne bottle in the air.
"drinks for the underage, i mean." i clarified my question, receiving a glare from jemma who sat on the couch during the process.
"umm-" samantha hummed before charlotte cut in.
"i'm making a non-alcoholic long island iced tea!" she yelled from my kitchen.
i chuckled to myself. "oh god." i mumbled under my breath. "anyway...movie choice?"
"i already purchased 'she's all that'!" carrie yelled as she placed the dvd on the coffee table of the living room.
"you're kidding, right?" jemma said as she observed the dvd.
"what's wrong with that movie? i've never watched it but i hear good things about it at school." i said, referring to the fact that every teenage girl that i teach was head over heels for this one year old romcom.
"it's soooo good." charlotte called out as she began mixing together the non-alcoholic beverages.
"it's so cheesy!" miranda called out. "i think i saw it a few months back, i could barley get through it."
"not all of us can be critics miranda." i said with a chuckle.
"you don't have to be a critic to realize that 'she's all that' is a terrible movie for a first date! who wants to watch a romcom with a guy? why not just a regular old comedy? or an action movie." jemma rambled.
"the kid has a point." samantha said as she grabbed five champagne glasses from my cabinet.
"well do you have netflix?" miranda asked.
i shook my head, "no. i still have yet to invest in it. but it's on my bucket list!"
"so you mean to tell me 'she's all that' is my only choice and he'll be here any minute now?" jemma cried out.
"it's a classic! he will love it. who doesn't love a good romcom?" carrie said as she put the dvd into the disc player.
"ugh! i feel like i'm going to throw up." jemma mumbled, letting out a small dry heave that seemed more dramatic than genuine. "auntie, you have to have some other movies lying around here."
"i could always pull out the home videos from my childhood." i suggested as i looked over towards the bookshelf that held my video tapes. "you know your dad is in a couple of these too."
"oh yeah, so he can watch you as a little girl?" miranda said, "not weird at all."
"well i never thought of it like that..." i trailed off as the doorbell rang.
"oh god." jemma exclaimed as she tried to fix her hair. "i'm not ready!"
"breathe, jemma...breathe." charlotte said as she placed the two non-alcoholic beverages on the coffee table.
"oh, i'll get it!" carrie exclaimed excitedly as she bounced to the door.
"please don't embarrass that poor boy." i called out as i watched her skip away.
"no promises!" carrie called out as i heard the door unlock and slowly creak open.
i pulled jemma into the kitchen and spoke in a hushed tone. i gently put hands on jemma's shoulders and looked into her eyes with a smile. "you are going to be great."
jemma nodded as she chewed on her bottom lip. "yeah...i know i am."
"listen to me though...if you hate him, find me." i said before moving my hands off her shoulders. "if he tries to do something weird, definitely find me. and if he does that really weird thing that guys do where they're so focused on you that they pays no mind to that crappy movie, find me right then and there!"
"are you really that worried about me?" jemma asked with a giggle.
i smiled and brushed her hair out of her face. "of course i am. it's your first date."
she shook her head. "you know that it's not my first rodeo."
"i mean that it's your first date now that you're officially living in new york, and it's taking place in my living room. so naturally i'm going to worry." i said.
"i think i got it handled." jemma said as she pushed her shoulders back and put her hands on her hips.
i chuckled. "there's that feistiness i taught you to have. go get em' tiger."
"aye aye!" jemma said as she spun around and sauntered out into the living room.
i leaned against my kitchen counter and watched her walk away in her light wash jeans and grey long-sleeve fitted shirt. what the hell was i worrying about anyway?
carrie led luca into the apartment and i studied him. he was a tall guy with a youthful appearance. he had dark blonde hair, blue eyes, and a slim build.
"hey there! i'm jamie boyd, and this is my roof that you're under." i said jokingly as i approached.
luca chuckled and extended his hand out for me to shake. "and i'm luca andel. it's nice to meet you."
i grinned, shaking his hand. "you too. you know, i used to know someone with the last-" i started to say before i caught the glare that jemma was shooting at me. "well...the living room is there. we're headed upstairs." i said as i pointed up the stairs.
"i thought we were all going to watch the movie together?" carrie asked, pouting a little. "i specifically chose a movie i thought everyone could enjoy!"
"carrie." samantha said through gritted teeth. "upstairs we go."
carrie groaned as charlotte grabbed her hand and dragged her as the four girls made their way up to the second floor.
"i'll be-" i started to say before jemma spoke.
"upstairs. we got it." she said with a smirk.
i rolled my eyes jokingly and gave her a thumbs up before i climbed the stairs, leaving luca and jemma alone in my living room.
we all huddled together upstairs, right in front of the closed bedroom door. it was silent for a split moment before miranda spoke. "should we like...eavesdrop?"
"no! it's a date, we can't eavesdrop!" charlotte urged.
"exactly, and plus what will we hear? the shitty movie that carrie chose for their first date?" samantha said.
"hey!" carrie said. "what would you have picked?"
"something good." samantha said without a second thought.
"i don't know, i'd watch the notebook." charlotte asked.
"on a first date?! you can't be serious." miranda said.
"i'd watch the parent trap." i said confidently. "or the water boy. something funny."
"the parent trap, really?" miranda said.
"hey...it's a classic!" i said, "it's a feel-good comedy."
"the parent trap is for like 12 year olds." samantha said bluntly.
"it's a classic! it doesn't matter what age you are!" i said, standing my ground.
one hour and several drinks later, the girls and i were completely spent. we had gone through the entire bottle of champagne and done everything your typical sleepover entailed. we had braided each other's hair, watched the opening to the 'parent trap' which left us crying laughing, and even began to do face masks. after we got cleaned up and got into our pajamas, i made my way downstairs to see how jemma and luca were doing.
a big tipsy at this point, i wore a pair of pink sweatpants and a white oversized t-shirt as i came down the last step where i was able to make out a light shuffling coming from my living room.
i closed my eyes, "stop doing what you're doing, i'm coming through." i warned jokingly.
"aye! we aren't doing anything." jemma said immediately with a smile.
i crossed my arms as i looked over to my couch where jemma sat next to luca. they were sitting on opposite ends, almost as if it were a barrier between them.
"oh really?" i asked. "why are you sitting so far apart?"
"there's nothing wrong with giving someone their personal space." luca said, "right?"
jemma nodded, "that's what i've always heard. personal space is important especially on a first date."
"mhm," i hummed as i leaned on the back of the couch. "well the credits are rolling and i'm wondering what's next. gonna bake some cookies or call it a night? because personally i'm ready to hit the hay."
"i'm pretty tired." jemma said as she stood up, "i am a girl who needs her beauty sleep."
luca chuckled softly and nodded, "i think i'm out as well. but i have to call my dad and tell him i'm ready to go."
"your dad has to pick you up?" jemma asked.
"he just hates me being out on the new york streets after eight. it's this stupid rule we have." luca said as he pulled out his phone.
"yeah...new york streets can be scary." i said with a soft laugh, thinking about all the times i had to walk home after a late evening class at columbia.
"my dad has the same rule." jemma said. "only it's nine."
"see! it's a dad thing." luca said with a smile.
i nodded, watching how natural the conversation between the two was. they weren't acting awkward at all.
i couldn't help but smile to myself at the sight. this date was going so much better than i had ever expected.
luca made his call and explained that his dad would be coming in the next five minutes or so. i let the pair talk privately some more while i stood in the kitchen.
samantha walked into the kitchen and helped me wash the glasses. "so, how'd it go?" she asked.
"actually...surprisingly well." i said with a genuine smile. "they talk to easily and naturally. it's almost like they've known each other for years."
"well good. i'm glad." samantha said as she washed the last of the glasses and set it on the drying rack. "do i dare ask if anything happened?"
i shot her a look, "i think so. i told them i was approaching the living room and the two were on two different sides of the couch."
"almost as if they quickly moved away." samantha said. "i remember those days. just like they were yesterday."
just as she began reminiscing, the doorbell rang, shaking her into reality. i looked back into the living room to see luca rising up from the couch. "that's probably my ride."
"bye kid! thanks for coming!" i said to him from the kitchen before noticing the look sam was giving me. "what?" i said.
"aren't you going to meet his parents? i'm no parental figure but i'd want to meet the person that owns the home that my child was at for the past two hours." samantha said with a nonchalant shrug.
i looked down at my outfit, i was in no attire to meet any parents, but i knew she was right. "ugh...you're right." i groaned. "but i am not in parental meeting attire."
samantha laughed and shook her head. "it's ten pm, i doubt the person would be surprised and plus it will literally be a thirty-second interaction."
i rolled my eyes but agreed with her. "fine! but if this goes wrong, i am blaming you."
the man on the doorstep pressed the doorbell and i opened the door to see an attractive older man.
holden andel, my highschool love.
there was a tension in the air that i had never experienced before. he looked down at me and his eyes widened in shock. "jamie?" he said in disbelief.
his voice was deep yet familiar. a familiar rumble that sent chills throughout my body.
"holden?" i asked, feeling the butterflies in my stomach. i hadn't seen him in person in more than twelve years but he looked just as handsome as he did in highschool.
holden's jaw was practically on the floor as he studied me head to toe. "jesus...you look-" he said before he was interrupted by luca's voice behind him.
"you're blocking the doorway, dad." luca said as he pushed past holden.
i was still in a daze until holden spoke again. "i'll get it." he said, pushing the door open wider, allowing himself to enter the apartment.
"i...i wasn't expecting you?" i said, trying to keep the shock out of my voice.
"i could see that." he chuckled.
he was now standing a few inches in front of me. my head barely reached his shoulders and i felt so short compared to him.
"so...you live in new york now?" he asked.
"for thirteen years, yes." i said with a smile.
holden's mouth dropped again, but this time in shock. "thirteen years?! how the hell am i just finding out right now?"
i shrugged, "we lost touch, remember. what are you up to these days?" i asked as i nudged his arm.
holden chuckled and let out a breath. "i'm a head hockey coach for the new york rangers." he said with a smile.
i nodded, not surprised in the slightest about his career. "oh, so you're making the big bucks then?"
"i guess you could say that. my salary is pretty hefty." he said with a smirk.
we were quiet for a moment before luca broke the silence. "dad, we should get going. i've got school tomorrow."
holden nodded, looking like he didn't want to leave.
i felt the same way. i didn't want this interaction to end so soon. but i knew i had a room full of friends and needed to get it back under my own covers.
"yeah!" i said quickly. "you two should get going."
holden nodded and gave me a smile. "it was really good to see you." he said.
"you too." i said as i returned the smile.
luca had already opened the front door and holden moved to follow his son. holden stood in the doorway for a second, as if contemplating something.
i raised my eyebrow as his hesitation confused me. what was he thinking about?
"before i go..." he started.
holden took a step back into the apartment and took two big steps so that he was standing right in front of me. i felt my cheeks flush red as he was so uncomfortably close to me.
he leaned down and spoke in a low voice. "don't go disappearing on me again, okay?"
i looked up at him and was taken off guard by his proximity. he was really close to me. he was so close that i could smell his cologne. i felt my heart beat a bit faster, a reaction that i hadn't felt in a very long time.
"i won't." i said quietly, not looking away from his eyes.
holden gave me a lopsided smile before he leaned in even closer, his lips now barely touching my ear. i felt a wave of chills run down my spine as his hand found its way to my hip.
"good." he whispered before he planted a soft kiss on my cheek.
the gesture left me slightly flustered. i had not expected that. holden pulled back, looking at me with a smirk that told me he knew exactly what he had just done to me.
"goodnight, jamie." he said.
"safe travels home you two!" i said as i watched the two walk down the steps of my brownstone and onto the sidewalk.
as i closed the front door, i stood against it and felt my body relax. the interaction with holden was so unexpected. how on earth did he end up having a kid? and how did i not know?
samantha came into the foyer and gave me a knowing look. "was it just me or did you and that dad have more tension than the actual kids who had an actual date?" she said as she placed her hands on her hips.
i pushed myself off the door and rolled my eyes jokingly. "oh stop." i said as i approached samantha.
"don't even try and pretend there wasn't something there. you two looked like you were about to make-out right in the doorway." she said.
"remember the highschool sweetheart i was telling you and the girls about yesterday over brunch?" i said to her.
samantha nodded. "the guy who you'd talk to when he was lonely and you kissed a few times...blah blah blah." then her jaw dropped as she began to put the pieces together. "no...that was him? your high school sweetheart?!" samantha said in disbelief.
"yeah..." i said weakly. "can you believe it?"
samantha's eyes widened as the realization hit her. "honey, your high school sweetheart has a kid and is a hot, six foot four tall, hockey coach for the new york rangers?!" she said, her voice getting higher with each new piece of information. "if you don't get on that. i will." she winked.
"are you forgetting he's my niece's soon to be boyfriend's dad?" i said, it didn't matter how loud i said it all since jemma was in the bathroom upstairs, showering.
samantha shrugged, "i say play your cards however the fuck you'd like."
"well it was over a decade ago. i'm sure he's moved on." i said as i began walking back up the stairs.
"moved on? please, you saw him kiss your cheek." samantha said from behind me.
i turned to give her a look but knew she was right. holden was not hiding his old attraction to me.
"listen i'm tired. this is a lot to process right now. i'm just gonna go to sleep until i figure out how to approach this." i said.
but i didn't want to go to sleep. my mind was running a million miles a minute with thoughts of holden. seeing him again had stirred up some very old feelings.
i tried to push those thoughts out of my mind as i climbed into bed and closed my eyes.
housekeeping notes!
and just like that...we have met holden! thoughts on him so far?
hope this chapter wasn't too consuming!
sorry for any errors.
