7:15pm

the day had been tiring, full of moving furniture and unpacking boxes since i had helped jemma and dakota with the moving. but it was finally over, and i was ready to unwind.

i had decided to treat myself and jemma to a nice dinner out at a nearby restaurant. we walked into the upscale restaurant, taking in the sophisticated atmosphere and stylish decor.

we made our way over to the hostess stand, where a pretty young woman greeted me with a smile. "good evening. do you guys have a reservation?" she asked politely.

i shook my head. "no, we don't have a reservation. but we'd like a table for two, if possible." i said.

the hostess nodded and checked her seating chart. "we have a few open tables. follow me." she said, grabbing a menu and leading me through the restaurant.

i was wearing a green and yellow abstract bandeau top along with a black maxi skirt and black wedges as i strutted behind the hostess.

as we weaved our way through the restaurant, i noticed several heads turning to check me out. i felt a twinge of confidence at the attention, but tried to keep a casual demeanor.

the hostess came to a stop at a table near the back of the restaurant, tucked away in a cozy corner. "here you are." she said, gesturing for me to take a seat.

i thanked her and sat down, looking around at the other patrons. some were couples, others were groups of friends, but there were also a few people dining alone.

i picked up the menu and skimmed through the options, my stomach growling with anticipation. everything sounded delicious, but i was in the mood for something light yet satisfying.

just then a waitress came over, but not to take my order. "excuse me, that gentleman over there wants to buy you a drink."

i looked up in surprise, and followed the waitress' gesture to a handsome man who seemed to be a bit older than me sitting at a nearby table. he raised his glass in a silent toast, a charming smile on his lips.

i shared a look with jemma, feeling bored i decided to mess with the man. "can't he see i'm with my daughter for god sakes? this is so embarrassing." i said as i cupped my face.

jemma immediately caught on to my antics and played along. "mom, please don't make a scene." she groaned, feigning embarrassment. we both suppressed giggles as we continued our act.

"please, tell him that i'm with my daughter and this is highly inappropriate." i said to the waitress.

the waitress looked flustered, not sure what to do. she looked over at the man, who was still watching us intently. "i'm so sorry, miss. he insisted on buying you a drink." she apologized.

i sighed and shook my head, still maintaining my facade. "it's alright. i can't believe this." i said, feigning annoyance.

jemma put on a show of being embarrassed, pretending to shield her face from the stranger's gaze. we continued our act, enjoying the way the waitress looked increasingly uncomfortable.

eventually, the waitress excused herself and hurried away to the bar, leaving us alone to chuckle softly at our little game.

as the waitress approached the man who had sent over the drink, we watched with barely concealed grins as she tried to break the news.

the man looked confused and amused as the waitress gestured towards us, trying to explain the situation. we could hear snippets of their conversation, including the waitress' apologies and the man's bewildered response.

the waitress left, looking bewildered, and the man stood up from his table and approached ours.

he was attractive, with a charming smile and confident demeanor. as he stood next to our table, he chuckled and looked at us with a mix of amusement and curiosity. "look, i'm sorry for offering you a drink, i didn't realize it'd cause this much commotion. i just figured it'd be the respectable thing to do." the man said.

we both looked up at him, still playing up our little act. "it was quite inappropriate, honestly." i said, frowning for added effect. "i mean, in front of my daughter? i feel extremely embarrassed."

the man looked genuinely apologetic, running a hand through his hair. "i'm really sorry, i never would have done it if i knew you were... well, a mother." he stumbled over his words, clearly realizing his mistake.

"right, the teenager next to me is just my best friend." i said sarcastically.

the man chuckled sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck. "okay, alright. i'm...i'm gonna just." he said as he pointed to his table. "enjoy the rest of your night."

jemma and i burst into a fit of giggles as the man walked away, clearly amused by the situation. "that was priceless." i said, unable to contain my laughter.

FARMERS MARKET
56th and 8th, new york, new york
12pm

the next day, charlotte had promised dakota and jemma that she'd bake for them, and like charlotte's usual antics she refused to go to the grocery store. meaning i was dragged along with her to a farmers market.

the farmers market was bustling with the lunch rush as i followed charlotte through the crowd. she was determined to find the perfect ingredients for her latest baking masterpiece.

i followed along, slightly amused and slightly annoyed at being roped into this adventure. "why'd we have to go to the market all the way out here? i mean, why brooklyn?"

charlotte shot me a look over her shoulder. "because this is where all the good stuff is." she explained, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"and why was i roped in to help you?" i asked.

"because dakota is your brother so you must know what his favorite baked goods are." she replied.

i rolled my eyes. "and you know as well as i do that he eats anything. he doesn't exactly have refined taste." i said.

charlotte chuckled and shrugged. "okay, fair point. but he deserves something better than just any baked good. i'm on a mission to make him the best cookies he's ever had."

"you could make the worst thing ever and he wouldn't show it. he has this unreadable resting face. he's had it since he was a kid." i explained.

charlotte continued to weave through the stalls, carefully inspecting the different fruits and vegetables. her eyes lit up when she saw a stand filled with fresh eggs.

"look at these eggs, jamie! they're almost as beautiful as me." she said, holding up a carton and admiring the iridescent shells.

i chuckled at her comment. "don't let the chickens hear you say that." i teased. "they might get jealous."

charlotte laughed, shaking her head. "oh, hush. i'm simply stating the truth. but seriously, these eggs are spectacular." she placed the carton into my arms. "hold this for me while i continue searching for the other ingredients."

"so i met someone." i told her.

charlotte's ears perked up at my words. "what? you met someone?" she asked, turning to face me. "tell me everything."

i smiled, still holding the carton of eggs. "okay, so his name is emmett. he's an environmental science professor at columbia, and a former college friend of mine. we actually ran into each other at columbia. and he invited me to speak at the school..." i trailed off, a small grin on my lips.

"go on! you can't just stop there!" charlotte urged, clearly curious. "what else? is he cute?"

i chuckled at her eagerness. "yeah, he's cute. definitely cute. he's got this messy brown hair, brown eyes, tall, very handsome." i couldn't help but feel giddy talking about him.

"oh my gosh, so is that it? i mean, are you done with duncan?" charlotte asked, grinning at me.

i shrugged, thinking about my recent 'breakup' with duncan. "yeah, he told me to stop waiting for him."

"good riddance." charlotte said with a huff. "does emmett have any flaws?"

i chuckled. "i don't know. he seems pretty perfect." i joked. "but seriously, i don't know yet."

"hmmm, suspicious." charlotte said, her eyes narrowing suspiciously. "i'm not buying it. no one's perfect."

"you seem to think my brother's pretty perfect." i said with raised eyebrows.

charlotte suddenly blushed, realizing what i was implying. "i..." she stuttered, trying to come up with a witty response.

"uh-huh, that's what i thought." i said. "c'mon let's get you the rest of these fancy ingredients."

STREETS OF NEW YORK
56th and 8th ave, new york, new york
2pm

as we made our way towards the subway station, charlotte and i continued our conversation about the insane diana.

as we passed by a hotel, a man stepped out the front entrance. "hey you!" i said to the man, it was the same man from dinner last night.

the man turned around, his eyes widening in surprise. "oh, um..." he said, recognition dawning on his face.

just then carrie ran out of the hotel behind the man, not noticing charlotte and i yet, "we have to stop doing this! that man just thought i was a hooker in there."

"carrie?" charlotte spoke up.

carrie spun around at the sound of charlotte's voice, her eyes widening in shock when she saw us. "oh, uh... hi." she said awkwardly, smoothing down her hair. "charlotte...jamie...what are you guys doing in this neighborhood?"

"they have the best farmers market." charlotte said as she pointed to the farmers market which was behind us, "what are you doing here...with him?" she said as she looked at the tall man.

the man chuckled nervously, realizing he was now part of the conversation. he looked at us with a sheepish smile. "well, uh...i was just doing business in the area and we bumped into each other. charlotte how are you?" he said.

charlotte's mouth was open as if she couldn't believe what was in front of her, "i uh...just got the best eggs and some bread..." she began to ramble.

"charlotte." carrie said.

"i better go!" charlotte said as she pulled me with her.

carrie sighed, "ladies! wait!" she pleaded but it was too late.

"who was that guy?" i asked charlotte.

"big." she answered. "you didn't know that?"

i quickly shook my head, "i'd only seen him twice." i said, my mind going back to me and carrie's previous relationship. she was sleeping with a married man, big was the married man. big also was hitting on me not even twenty four hours ago. "big hit on me." i told charlotte.

charlotte's eyes widened in disbelief. "wait, big hit on you? seriously?" she asked, clearly shocked. she knew the kind of person big was and couldn't believe he had attempted to charm me.

i nodded, confirming her disbelief. "yeah, he was trying to be all suave and charismatic, he offered to buy me a drink but i declined because i was out to dinner with jemma." i said, still thinking about the encounter. "jesus, what if i was out alone and i accepted?"

charlotte shook her head, a look of disgust on her face. "ugh, big is the worst. he's married and he has a carrie now too, yet he's out here hitting on you. what is wrong with him?"
