JAMIE'S BROWNSTONE HOME
new york, new york
9:15am

i ran around the house like a crazy person as i tried to quickly get dressed and eat. jemma stared at me from the couch, laughing at me.

"you look like a squirrel on crack right now." jemma said between fits of laughter, watching me run around the house like a madwoman.

"shut up." i muttered as i carefully put on my new jimmy choo kitten heeels.

she continued to giggle, clearly amused by my frantic behavior. "where are you going in such a rush?" she asked, propping her chin on her hand.

"work. and i'm late." i informed her as i grabbed my purse. "now, are you okay being here by yourself? because if not, you can always come to work with me." i said as i ran a hand through her hair delicately.

"i'm fine, auntie." she said with an eye roll. "i'm not, like, five, you know?"

"i know...it's just-" i started to say but the sound of the doorbell ringing caught my attention.

"expecting company?" jemma quipped as she watched me walk to the door.

i looked through my peephole to see a 6'2 man with dark brown almost black hair. my brother.

"goddammit, dakota..." i said under my breath as i unlocked the door and opened it to find my big brother standing there, casually leaning against the doorframe. "didn't you say you were on your way like...last night?"

he raised an eyebrow at me and grinned. "yeah some 'things' came up." he said simply as he walked inside, not even bothering to ask.

i closed the door behind him and crossed my arms over my chest, giving him a disapproving look. "things?" i pressed.

"things as in diana..." he said referring to his soon to be ex-wife.

i sighed and shook my head, rolling my eyes. of course. "what did she do now?" i asked, knowing full well it was most likely some stupid and ridiculous fight over something minor.

"she's refusing to sign the divorce papers." he said with a defeated sigh.

"what?" i exclaimed incredulously, feeling my irritation rise. "she can't be serious! she's been cheating on you for like, two years!!" i couldn't fathom how she wouldn't sign the papers. "does she have a death grip on your bank account or something?"

he ran a hand through his hair and groaned. "wouldn't be the first time." he mumbled, clearly frustrated.

"so what now? are you just gonna stay married to that lunatic forever?" i asked, not being able to hide how annoyed i was.

"no, you dimwit." he shot me a look. "obviously i'm not." he ran his hand over his face and let out an exasperated breath. "i'm just not sure what to do. every time i go to the courts asking for a divorce, she's found some reason to shoot me down. she's even threatened to take jemma and leave the country." his expression hardened at the last part.

"it's 9:30!" jemma announced from the couch.

"i am running very late to work...stay here, okay? make yourself at home... if you get hungry there's a restaurant down the street that's cafeteria inspired. they have great lunch meals." i said as i leaned in for a hug.

he let out a deep sigh and took the hug, leaning his head on my shoulder for a moment. "i don't know how you do it." he muttered in my ear. "how do you deal with these kids?"

"i just do my best." i said as i pulled away from the hug. i ran my hand over jemma's hair and ruffled it lightly. "love you, kiddo." i said and in response she mumbled sleepily while i kissed the top of her head.

STUYVESANT HIGH SCHOOL
new york, new york
10:20am

i stood in front of the school doors, adjusting my white blouse and black skirt as i walked in. a few students called out to me as i walked through the crowded halls, and i waved to them in acknowledgment.

i turned down the hall leading to my classroom, passing by the many other classes. i eventually made it to the classroom door and opened it, letting the door swing open as i stepped in and cleared my throat.

"morning, everybody!" i said loudly, my voice ringing out over the chatter of the students.

all 20 sets of eyes in the room turned towards me, and i could feel the weight of all those stares and expectant looks on me.

i cleared my throat again and smiled. "who's ready to stretch their brains?" i teased.

a chorus of excited voices and cheers rang out as i spoke, and i chuckled as i took my place behind my desk.

taking attendance, i began to speak to the excited group. "alright, let's get down to business, shall we?" i looked down at my attendance sheet and began to name off names. "leslie? present."

i sat at the desk inside my room, eating a small salad from the cafeteria and looking over my notes. the students were all in the cafeteria giving me a peaceful break, a small smile touched my lips as the soft clopping of heels sounded from the door. i looked over to see charlotte, miranda, carrie, and samantha standing in the doorway, all wearing matching business-looking dresses and shoes.

"what a surprise..." i said with a big smile. "hi ladies!"

they all returned the greeting, chuckling happily as i got up from my desk and walked over to them. i wrapped my arms around each of their waists in turn, giving them all a hug.

"what are you all doing here?" i asked after the hug was broken.

"visiting, of course!" carrie said with a big, wide grin.

"how's our favorite teacher doing?" miranda asked as she sat down at a random desk, crossing her legs.

"fine, fine, your favorite teacher is actually planning on going on a date tonight." i informed the group as i sat down at my desk.

"oh really?" samantha piped up as she leaned over my desk. a sly smile spread across her lips. "you're going out tonight?"

"how'd you meet?" carrie quipped as she leaned on a desk.

"and what's he do for a living?" charlotte asked with big eyes.

"yes, do tell, and don't leave out anything..." samantha said.

i chuckled at their questions before shaking my head. "well.." i began as i picked up my salad and took a bite. "he's a pediatrician, duncan wright. he was working the urgent care last night when i had to take my niece to be seen." i said simply as i swallowed some of the salad.

"and he asked you out?" samantha added. "sounds like a catch!" she grinned.

"he's a real charmer." i said with a smile as i picked up my salad and took another bite.

"you know, it's always so hard to get a man to ask out the girl. just the other day, i took the chance and asked out a man just for him to not call me back." carrie said as she rolled her eyes.

"oh hun, how long has it been?" i asked carrie.

she sighed, "three days! i mean this is the last time i'll ever ask a man out."

"maybe he's busy?" charlotte said with a hopeful look on her face.

"ladies, i don't understand why you all ask them out. let the men coming chasing you." samantha said as she took a sip from her water bottle.

"i agree." miranda spoke up.

"of course you do." charlotte said.

"anyway, what time is your date tonight with dr. wright?" carrie asked.

"around 8. and he's going to pick me up at my place." i said before taking a bite of the salad and popping it in my mouth. there was a few seconds of silence as the ladies processed the information.

miranda broke the silence, changing the subject. "i can't be the only one worried about jamie's niece here...is she okay?"

i swallowed the rest of my salad. "oh she's fine..she was feeling nauseated but turns out it's because her parents are divorcing so she's stressed." i said bluntly as i took a sip of my water.

there was more silence, and i began to feel a bit uncomfortable as i could feel their gazes on me.

samantha spoke up next. "is she your sister's kid? your brother's?" she questioned.

"brother's kid." i said bluntly but quickly clarified as i noticed the looks on their faces, understanding they would be shocked to hear that. "my older brother, dakota." i felt a bit of anxiety in my stomach but i tried to keep my face neutral. "he lives in connecticut as an advertising sports executive."

"so he's pretty well off i'm guessing?" charlotte inquired curiously as she leaned back in her chair. i noticed they all wore expressions of curiosity and admiration.

i forced a grin on my face and ran a hand over my hair. "he makes a pretty good living." i said bluntly, feeling a bit tense. i had the urge to change the subject.

"rich and a dad?" samantha said as she looked down at her bottle.

"don't even think about it, sam." charlotte warned samantha.

carrie who probably sensed my discomfort spoke up, "so! who wants to go to the hamptons this weekend?" she asked.

"it's only monday and you're already worried about the weekend." miranda said as she took a sip of whatever soda was in front of her.

"please don't start with the logical facts, miranda." carrie said bluntly as she crossed one leg over the other.

miranda rolled her eyes and took a sip of her pepsi. "whatever." she said dismissively before looking at me. "you're coming with us, right?" she said.

there was a moment of surprise from the other ladies in the group before i was the first to speak, clearing my throat. "me?" i asked. "you want me to join your hamptons trip..?"

"of course we do." carrie said cheerfully. "what else are you going to go this weekend?"

"oh, i don't know..." i said feeling unsure about the trip.

"i hate going to the hamptons during this time of year. i'm surrounded by twenty somethings who are all too drunk to think." miranda complained.

charlotte shook her head, "i for one love a weekend in the hamptons! great food, great parties, and i'll be going with my new boyfriend." charlotte said referring to her twenty something boyfriend. "we should all invite someone to go with!" she suggested.

i opened my mouth but didn't respond as i began to think of a reply but nothing came to mind. it was true, there was nothing else on my agenda. a part of me wanted to go with them and take a break from work and the stress of it all.

"you know what...yeah, count me in." i said with a smile.

JAMIE'S BROWNSTONE HOME
new york, new york
7:45pm

i walked to jemma and dakota as they sat on my couch watching some sports game. "what do you think?" i asked, my question directed at jemma...who knew outfits better than a teenage girl?

i did a small twirl. i wore a black givenchy long sleeve mini dress that had a small slit and was paired with my black prada leather boots.

jemma took a minute to appraise my look from head to toe before she spoke. "you look fabulous as always, auntie jamie." she said with a wink.

i rolled my eyes but felt a smile form on my face. dakota looked up at me, raising an eyebrow slightly as he watched me.

"what?" i said as i narrowed my eyes at him.

"you're dressed up for a date...or something?" he asked, his tone not giving any sense of interest but rather skepticism.

before i could reply, jemma quickly interjected with her head turned in the other direction. "she is going out with dr. wright!" she chirped happily.

"what is that? code that he's mr. right?" dakota asked.

"no, dad...he's my doctor from last night. him and auntie hit it off." jemma corrected.

"oh." dakota looked back at me with a raised eyebrow, his skepticism only having intensified.

i put my hands on my hips and looked back at him. "what's that supposed to mean?" i asked with a slight defensive tone.

"oh nothing...i just don't appreciate the fact that you were flirting with the doctor while he was examining my daughter," he sighed. "for christ's sakes, you probably distracted him from giving her a real diagnosis!"

i rolled my eyes and let out a loud sigh. "are you really using this as an excuse to lecture me right now?" i retorted back to him.

dakota simply shrugged, his expression unchanging. "just an observation." he said simply as he returned his attention back to the television.

i rolled my eyes once again, frustrated by his tone and his demeanor. "number one, i'd never entertain anyone in front of my seventeen year old niece! and two, i'd never ever put her health in danger...plus, i didn't flirt with him first." i shot back. "but it's not like you were there, huh?"

"i sure wasn't!" he said, his attention still on the game.

i huffed in frustration and gave him a stern look. i was never one for confrontation, but dakota had a knack for pushing my buttons. i clenched my jaw, taking in a deep breath to remain calm and not escalate tensions.

before i could retaliate again, i remembered what duncan had said and leaned in close to my brother. "the last thing jemma needs right now is for us to be arguing on top of the ongoing divorce...so if i were you, i'd drop it." i said to him in a low tone. i was used to dakota dogging on me, it was usual dakota behavior.

my words had an impact on dakota, and for the first time in a while his expression shifted ever so slightly, now looking mildly guilty.

he swallowed and exhaled, letting out a loud "tch" sound before speaking. "i guess you're right." he said finally, turning to look back at me. "you and the doctor gonna do something else besides dinner?" he questioned bluntly, his gaze holding a hint of judgment.

i could feel my cheeks begin to flush with a bit of heat, my eyes widening slightly as i was caught off guard by the question. "where did that come from?" i asked, my tone defensive and a tiny bit flustered.

dakota merely shrugged, "just curious, is all." he said casually. jemma was now watching our interaction intently, paying attention as she took a bite of her snack.

the loud and distinct chime of the front doorbell reverberated through the brownstone house. jemma and i both looked towards the door, turning as we heard the sound, while dakota was the first to rush to the door and throw it open.

duncan, a handsome man in his late thirties, stood there before them. "you're not jamie." he said as he plunged a bouquet of flowers at dakota's chest with a small laugh.

"i didn't think i was, doc." dakota said with a grin as he took the flowers and handed them to me.

i was now standing beside dakota, and i couldn't help but feel a rush of butterflies in my tummy as i laid eyes on duncan wright. he stood at the front doorway in a white button up dress shirt and dark suit jacket, looking handsome as ever.

"hello, duncan." i said as i stepped forward.

duncan's gaze shifted to me, and i could feel my cheeks grow hot once more. "jamie." he said with a smile, and i could see his gaze dart down to my attire. "you look lovely." he said with a small smirk, obviously appreciating my dress.

that comment, paired with his smirk, made my cheeks grow even hotter as i felt a rush of shyness. i smiled at him and let out a soft, quiet chuckle. "thank you." i said softly.

dakota stood there, holding the bouquet of flowers and glaring at duncan, his eyes narrowing in disapproval.

"duncan, dakota." i introduced. "duncan, this is my brother and dakota this is duncan." i said as i grabbed a hold of the flowers and sniffed them.

i felt a pang of nervousness in my stomach as the two men stood in front of me, and i shifted my weight to stand a bit further back towards the doorframe, making the two feel a bit awkward. they both stared at each other for a moment before duncan held one hand out to shake dakota's, and dakota grabbed a hold of it, giving it a firm shake.

"nice to meet you, dakota." duncan said in a casual, friendly tone.

dakota merely nodded, a bit coldly. he said nothing in response and didn't let go of duncan's hand.

i stood there silently, watching the two interact awkwardly before i cleared my throat to break the silence. it was already bad enough that dakota was disapproving of the date, but i knew i had to try my hardest to get this to go right! "shall we go...?" i asked as i shifted my weight nervously.

duncan smiled and nodded, finally letting go of dakota's hand and opening the door. he gestured for me to step through, a hint of an inviting smile on his face.

"after you." he said simply.

before i could respond, dakota cleared his throat awkwardly and interjected. "you two have fun...and be safe." he said.

my heart was in my throat. there was a moment of silence in which i felt my whole body tense up before i spoke in a quiet, nervous tone. "thank you, dakota." i said, nodding as if to let him know it was okay.

i then took a deep breath and finally stepped past duncan through the front door, out into the warm, evening. "that was dakota..." i said to duncan as we started walking to the bistro.

duncan nodded in agreement as the two of us began walking, his eyes shifting down to admire the way my dress hugged my curves in the wind, before he spoke. "he's a little protective of you." he remarked casually.

i couldn't help but roll my eyes at the comment. "yes, he was not very happy about this." i said bluntly, chuckling softly.

duncan chuckled as well as the two of us walked. his laugh was pleasant and made the butterflies in my stomach flutter. he said nothing for a moment, seeming to be admiring me as we walked. "...so tell me about you." after a moment, he spoke.

"what about me?" i asked curiously, my tone lighthearted and friendly. i could feel a hint of a shy smile forming on my face as we continued walking, trying to ignore the fact that i felt like a nervous schoolgirl in front of this gorgeous man.

"well, i want to know more about you." he was genuine, his tone curious and excited. there was a small smile plastered cross his lips.

i laughed softly and nodded. "let's see...i'm from san francisco...and my parents are artists. my dad is this famous oil painter and my mom is an art therapist." i informed him. "i went to columbia for my bachelors in education and english."

"ah, so you always knew you wanted to teach!" he exclaimed excitedly as the two of us continued walking.

we approached a bistro where a valet greeted us before opening the door and letting us through. duncan held a hand out for me and let me enter before him, letting my hand slip into his.

"how long have they been married?" he asked.

"oh uh, they got divorced when i was a teenager...but they were married for what, fifteen or so years." i answered, slightly tensing at the mention of their divorce.

"i'm sorry to hear that..." he said softly.

i felt a small sense of comfort as we took a seat at the table. he pulled out a chair for me, making sure i was comfortable before he sat down across from me.

a waitress walked over to our table, ready to greet us, and we both ordered glasses red wine, and the two of us waited for her to return before we began our conversation again.

~~

three glasses of wine and a full stomach later, duncan and i stumbled down the streets of manhattan, laughing happily as we held each other's hands and kept walking.

it was a beautiful, pleasant evening and the two of us walked, hand in hand, like we were on the cover of a magazine. a small smile formed across my lips as i chuckled to myself, looking down at our connected hands.

the two of us had been laughing and making silly jokes all night, and the walk back to my home was no different. however, our inhibitions had been lowered by the wine and i had now become a bit more giggly and flirtatious with duncan, and the two of us now walked down the sidewalk, holding hands and laughing like schoolchildren out on a date. i kept shifting my eyes down to look at our interlocked hands, smiling each time i noticed our fingers intertwine and fit perfectly together.

"you're so beautiful, jamie." duncan said to me in a low, gentle tone, his words slightly slurred. he was obviously drunk, and i chuckled as i felt my cheeks burn.

"you're not so bad looking yourself, dr. wright." i said playfully.

i blushed harder at his comment, his compliment causing my already-flushed cheeks to grow hotter. i let out another quiet chuckle and looked down at our entwined hands once more.

"and thank you." i said as we neared my home, a warm and tingly feeling starting to grow in my stomach.

but i knew by looking at our interlocked fingers that our little fun time was about to end. it was a moment that i didn't want to end.

the two of us stood outside of my brownstone house, still holding hands as i turned to face duncan.

i looked up into his eyes, my smile growing as i took in his handsome face. it was dark out, the street lights bathing him in and making him look stunning.

he looked back down at me, meeting my gaze with a small smile. i bit my lip.

"this is me." i said finally.

he looked down at me with his eyes widening slightly, and i watched as he slowly processed what had just been said. after a moment, his smile started to grow as he wrapped his free hand gently around my waist. he pulled me gently closer to him, his fingers gripping my side and resting just above the curve of my hip.

my arms then went around his neck, tangling my fingers into his hair as i held him close to me, the two of us now only a few inches apart.

i looked into his eyes, noticing them dart down to land on my lips. he looked back up into my eyes once more, a soft smile across his face before he leaned down and pressed his lips gently against mine.

i hummed in my nose, gently kissing him back, as he wrapped both arms around my waist and held me close. the two of us remained intertwined and still for a moment, our arms embracing each other.

his tongue slipped past my lip and teased softly, and i opened my mouth further to let him in, my hand moving further through his hair.

he tilted my head to the side as he kissed me more deeply, almost desperately. i was getting drunk off more than just his kisses. i was falling hard for him.

the two of us remained locked together for a few more seconds before finally pulling away, our lips separating. a single strand of saliva still connected our lips before it broke and disappeared.

"i would invite you up but...jemma and dakota." i said with a sigh as i removed my arms from around his neck.

he nodded, his hair was messy now from me running my fingers through it, and his lips had become more pink. "that's okay...another time, yeah?" he replied with a goofy smile.

"another time." i said softly, biting my lip as i looked up at him, "thanks again, duncan." i said as i skipped up my stairs.

"anytime." he replied as he watched me skip up the stairs. he couldn't help but smile, and he chuckled to himself.

i opened my front door and was about to walk in but turned to face him, he had already started to walk away. "hey!" i said to get his attention.

duncan stopped in his steps and turned around to look at me, his hands shoved into the pockets of his suit jacket. "yeah?" he asked, raising an eyebrow curiously.

"how would you like to go to the hamptons this weekend?" i called out to him drunkenly.

he looked at me for a moment, not expecting the invitation, before a smirk formed on his face. "the hamptons?" he asked, his tone playful as he walked back towards me. "well aren't you full of surprises?" he teased playfully, walking up the steps and stopping in front of me, now only a couple inches away from me.

i looked up at him and chuckled, reaching for his tie to begin fiddling with it. "oh come on, i know you'd like a good weekend getaway." i said softly as i watched his eyes dart down to where my hands were playing with his tie.

he smirked, enjoying the way my hands were gently playing with the end of his tie. he placed one hand on my hip and stepped closer to me, closing the distance between us. "well if that means spending a weekend in bed with you, then yes i'd love to." he said, his voice low and seductive.

i blushed hard at his comment and bit down on my lip. i leaned in and whispered to him, "sounds perfect."
