Chapter three: Second Encounter
The marble walkway was replaced with a brown carpet as they entered the store. Like the walls in the maze, shelves and cabinets we're scattered across the store; Each with their own electric appliance displayed on their shelves. The glass door was like a shield, protecting the goods from thieves and crooks. On the faded green walls, An arrangement of different size TVs were neatly lined up, With price tags in the triple digits hanging below them. On the opposite side of the wall, was a lineup of the latest and newest video games; They're colorful boxes made a rainbow on the wall, easily taking over the painted green walls.
Midoriya furthered his eyebrows, his emerald green eyes swayed back and forth, observing the premises. There are multiple people in the store; A mother with two children, a group of teenagers, and many more. Moving further into the store, He walked through the jungle of computer displays with his heterochromia friend following behind him. With a small static shock building up as his feet turned on the carpet, he was about to make his way around a large display shelf.
His eyes widened. Latching onto the display shelf, he used his hand to make a rough motion to pull himself behind it; like he was a soldier taking cover from a wave of bullets. With his other hand, he ushered Todoroki to stay behind him. An audible gulp escaped his lips as he peered over.
Despite the amount of smaller shelves blocking the way, his eyes were able to land on the two blurry figures on the other side of the store. With the bridge of her hat shading her face, he was still able to see the same blood orange eyes he saw in the alleyway. A hint of fear was sprinkled into his eyes as he watched with intensity. The boy with hair a few shades lighter than himself, was talking to a male employee as the girl browsed the phone section.
"That's them" Midoriya mouthed as he turned it to Todoroki, "Those were the people in the alleyway stealing electronics! Without a doubt, they're probably going to steal these ones too!"
After informing him, Midoriya was about to look over again, but like a chain holding back, Todoroki stopped him. He quickly commented with his hand on the green haired boy's shoulder, "If you keep this up, they're going to notice you. If you don't want to get caught, you have to act natural."
Stepping out from behind the shelf, he slowly made his way to the other side of the store. Small droplets of sweat formed on Midoriya's temple as his eyes followed the motions of his friend. Casually, the boy with heterochromia browsed the electrical goods as he made his way; With the occasional stop to pick up an object and examining it a little closer. He was acting like an average customer. Realizing this, Midoriya played the game of follow-the-leader, copying every action of his friends, but with small differences.
Even though he was trying his best, the lingering feeling of tension was seen as he picked up a polaroid camera. Trailing over the smooth curves of the thing, he couldn't help, but have his eyes run away from the object in his hands. No matter how many times he tries to pull his eyes away, he can only focus on their figure.
His fingers tightly gripped around the camera as parakeet pupils watched the boy pick up a box with the font too small to read. Peering over his shoulder, the pony-tailed girl nodded her head and said something that was hard to make out.
The pair turned their heads to the employee and they exchanged words back and forth. Midoriya was still too far away to hear of a full conversation, but his eyes carefully watched the way their mouths moved. The only words he was able to make out were "twenty", "cost", and "range". Like a bad game of Mad Libs, he tried to fill in the words of the broken sentence he heard.
Twitching, his fingers shifted, loosening the grip he had on the camera. The friction between them rapidly decreased as Midoriya did nothing to stop it. Eyes widening, he pulled his eyes away from the couple across the room for his eyes to meet with the camera that slipped from his hands. Being pulled down by gravity, it quickly started making its way down to the floor. Stumbling forward, Midoriya leaned forward and swung his arms to catch it, but the only thing he managed to touch was the air.
The metallic clatter echoed throughout the store, stealing the attention of everyone. Dropping down to his knees, he frantically scrambled to put the camera in his hands. Turning it like a valve, he examined every single corner of the thing, making sure that it wasn't broken or damaged. Since it landed on carpet, there was no scratch marks or any damages, but there would be no way to retract the impact.
Everyone's eyes were stabbing into him, but one of them felt more intense than others. With a quivering jaw, Midoriya glanced his eyes upwards, his head still hanging low with shame. The amber glow of her eyes was colder than ice, but they also shined with an extreme glow of burning hatred. The two elements danced around in her eyes, constantly switching between the Icy stare and the burning glare. Despite her distance, he was able to see that her Essence was completely made out of fire and ice.
In a hasty motion, he gave the camera and a small amount of money to one of the employees near him before he quivered, "H-Here you go! Sorry for dropping it, Take the money and use it to repair anything that's broken!"
Leaving the employee confused, he frantically scampered away. Before he could leave the store though, he brushed by Todoroki and quietly yelped, "We need to get out of here, they noticed me!"
Nodding his head, he followed after midoriya as the two twisted and turned to avoid the shelves and displays. Getting bigger as they approached, the door was only a few feet away. His heart shriveled down into his chest, as he watched the pastel haired boy standing in front of the entrance; waiting for their oncoming approach. His eyes that were colored mint green stared holes into his body.
"Well, well, well, well! If it isn't Broccoli Boy" A voice hissed from behind them. With the twist of his heel, he turned his whole body around to see it was the brunette. Her fiery eyes danced with malicious intent as they trailed over his body. Noticing the taller boy standing behind midoriya, she gave him the same treatment with her cold gaze. "And his friend, edgy deviantART oc! Now why do I have the honor of having these two gentlemen watch me?" Raising her pitch, she played with the word gentleman as it rolled off her tongue.
"Can you please contain yourself? If we cause a ruckus, this is going to cause more trouble and make the other's mad. Let's just go, there's no point."A soft voice crooned from the backside. In the corner of his eye, Midoriya was able to see the voice belong to the Klutzy boy that accompanied her. With a large display case peering over the side, The two of them had nowhere to run to.
Calling him back into the conversation, Midoriya's ears perked up when he heard the girl reply to her pastel haired friend, "Stop worrying about them. They're not like helicopter parents who constantly watch us. We have the freedom to stay and ask what we want to ask, and I really want to know the answer to my question" Placing her hands on her hips, she bucked her hips to the side with her eyes following in the same movement as they snap back onto the two heroes in training.
With his lower lip quivering, the words Loosely fell from Midoriya mouth, "W-Were here to stop you" Gaining more confidence the more he spoke, He continued to blurt out, "We know what you're planning, and we're here to make sure you won't get away with it like last time!"
"From what? Being law-abiding citizens and paying for these goods?" Playfulness with a mixture of Rage was rooted in her voice as she asked. Digging her hand into the bag neatly wrapped around her wrist. With a small tug, she pulled out a piece of paper and threw it at them.
Catching the paper before it reaches the floor, It made a crackling noise as Midoriya's fingers wrapped around it. A yelp broke free between his lips as his hands shook with uneasiness. Peering over his shoulder, Todoroki wished to know the context of the paper to cause Midoriya to have such a reaction. When the miss colored eyes reached the faded black piece of paper, they widened for a second before shrinking down.
"See! We paid every single dime and Penny. And if you still don't believe us, you can ask the nice cashier lady that we were talking to." She retorted with arrogance; Pushing past the two UA students, she ripped the receipt out of his hands and aggressively put it into the bag. With a relieved sigh, The boy accompanying her turned away and started making his way to the door with the ponytail girl following behind him.
Before they can make it far though, Todoroki announced, "Even though you paid for this one, You didn't pay for the ones you stole previously."
The screeching sound of her heels was audible even on carpet as she stopped. Even though she wasn't fully turned around, the two high-schoolers were able to tell that a fire was lit down inside of her; A fire would be an understatement, it was more of a volcano. After the sound of her teeth rubbing together, she seethed, "Shut up hot pocket, you weren't even there so you don't have the right to talk about it...I understand that our last Rendezvous ended in tragedy, but you can't base your opinion on someone just from the first meeting. If I did that, I would think Mr. Crybaby over there is a terrible fighter, but the fact that he was able to make it into the number one hero School proves me wrong. So why don't you do me a favor and let this experience prove you wrong about your initial assumptions about us."
Every muscle in his body just froze before his mouth closed Like a garage door. Midoriya's brain formulated no thoughts other than to register that he was shocked. Besides that, He felt the feeling of pain; Not the pain that's caused by physical cuts and injuries, but the emotional kind. Like the harpoon that pierced the blubber of Moby Dick, her words tear through his skin and muscle system; the feelings of guilt erupted from those cuts like a gyser.
After the nuclear bomb that was her words dropped, it left an eerie silence hanging in the air like the suspended moment before a falling glass shatters on the ground. It lingered in the air above them, thick and heavy, like a blanket. Midoriya was at a loss for words.
Cutting through the silence and shredding it into pieces, the sound of a phone's ringtone blasted through the tense atmosphere. In a normal situation, the ringing would not be noticeable, but it felt like a siren in a ghost town.
Like a trained sniper, Midoriya's shamrock green eyes shot onto the target of the noise. Inside the pocket of the pastel haired boy, The noise blasted through the fabric. Despite its muffled noise, the sound was almost deafening compared to the lack of noise that was present earlier. Quickly, the boys sunk his hand in his pocket and the phone fumbled as he pulled it out. Before the boy placed the phone to his ear, Midoriya's eyes widened as he read the name of the person calling.
"Enki" He quietly mumbled to himself, Before his ears perked up to hear what the boy was muttering to the person on the other end of the phone.
"Y-Yeah, what's up?" He quietly stuttered, "W-we're taking too long? I'm sorry...We accidentally ran into some people, but don't worry! Hopefully not going to bother us anymore." Pulling the phone away from his ear He pressed the button to end the call before grabbing his female friend.
Giving small nods to each other, they quickly ushered out of the store with their bags, leaving the pair of heroes in training alone in store. His foot shifting forward, Midoriya wanted to chase after them to see where they would go, but his guilty conscience held him back.
Comforting his green haired friend, Todoroki placed a hand on his shoulder before acknowledging, "Maybe they're right... maybe it was a one-time thing. Regardless, you shouldn't spend any more time on them."
"Yeah, you're probably right" He agreed as the two of them walked to the other store where the rest of their friends were. When they got back, everyone had loads of bags filled with multiple types of goodies. Feeling hungry once again, the group made their way back to the food court where they could relax from all the walking. But throughout the rest of the trip, Midoriya couldn't sway his mind away from what had happened.
