Chapter Five: Motherly Advice

"See you guys on Monday!" Midoriya gently waved goodbye as he walked down the pavement. The sound of his shoes crunching against the pavement made a rough melody; Despite the fact that the sound was gravely, it still managed to soothe his soul. His body gently rocks back and forth to the sound as his shamrock green eyes stared into the sky.

The golden globe in the sky, also known as the sun, shined it's honeycomb-yellow light cast a rosy hue across the sky, but at the same time it dappled through the house and created a pattern of shadows that were plastered on the sidewalk. Like a record, the shadows slowly along with the sun as time continued to pass by; In his childish mind, Midoriya imagined the shadows were puppets that were telling a story through their circling movement.

Pulling his attention away from the shadows, he looked at the row of houses that decorated the streets. Each house was built similarly, but each of them have their own unique trait that made them stand out. It was almost like a school's yearbook, from afar each portrait of a student looked the same, but with a closer eye you would notice the difference between each of them that made them stand out. Escaping his lips, Midoriya hummed a soft melody as he passed by a house that was built with red Lyon Sandstone. He always kept a mental reminder of the house since it was next to the curb where he would have to make his last turn.

With his humming transforming into a whistle, his body swung to the left as he made the turn. His book bag jumped at the sudden movement, but gently fell back into place. The straps of his bag crawled down his shoulder with the speed of a snail. Not really worried about it, he continued walking as the weight of his bag pressed up against his back. With his feet coming to a stop, he pulled the strap of his book bag before looking at the apartment where he once lived. Before moving into the dorms, he lived with his mother inside the small apartment.

Grabbing a hold of the rail, the broccoli haired boy cautiously walked up the stairs to the second floor of the apartment. He made a turn to the left where he walked past a few doors. Once reaching his old apartment, he lifted his hand up and knocked on the door. Tapping the bottom of a shoe against the concrete, he kicked away the dirt particles that lingered on his footwear while waiting for the door to open. Luckily, Midoriya didn't have to wait too long before the door opened with a swing.

Standing in the doorway was a pudgy woman. Her juniper green hair barely reached her shoulders and a small section of her hair was tied into a ponytail while the rest of it hung down. Her face was round, similar to her eyes that were the same color as her hair. Her salmon colored cardigan mostly covered over the white shirt she was wearing underneath. For bottoms, she wore a dark pencil skirt that was barely above her knees and had black Mary Jane shoes. This woman was none other than Midoriya's Mother.

"Huh...? What are you doing here?" She asked, curious albeit confused. she wasn't expecting a visitor, especially around this time of day. Following up her question, she asked again, "Shouldn't you be in the school's dorms?"

"If you really don't want to see me, you could just say so!" Midoriya lightly chuckled, "With all of the studying and mishaps that I've been getting into, I realize that I haven't visited you in a while. So I thought we could hang out like a mother and son... I would have texted you, but I forgot to charge my phone last night so it's completely dead."

Her lips parted into a gentle smile as she vocalized her happiness, "Oh, of course. Why would I ever miss out on an opportunity to spend time with the next number one hero! Come on in, I just finished making dinner." Matching the smile on her face, he kicked off his shoes and replaced them with indoor sandals as he walked into the apartment.

The feeling of nostalgia washed over him like a gentle wave. It had been at least six to seven months since he was last here, but despite the time gap everything was still in place. Sitting on top of the wooden floors, the cream-colored carpet was spread out across the floor. Just on top of it was the birch table that had matching chairs to go along with it. Pushed into the corner of the room was the small TV accompanied with the pale purple couches that surrounded it.

The shows playing on the TV were background noise as he pulled up a chair and sat down at the table. Midoriya's mouth watered the moment the bowl was placed in front of him. His Mother's lips were pulled into a delighted smile as she sat next to her son at the table.

Sitting inside of the bowl was a Mushroom soup. It had bitter greens with tomatoes the size of peas, rare roast beef slices as thin as paper, noodles in a green sauce, and cheese that would melt on his tongue. The rich aroma of the dish wafted down and beckoned him. Unable to hold himself back any longer he dipped the spoon into the stew and lifted it up.

After licking his fleshy lips, he bit down into the spoon, stuffing the broth and pieces of meat into his mouth. It was soft and warm. The pleasant smoothness of the cheese blended perfectly with the bitter-sweet taste of beef. Watching through skittish eyes, his mother watched his lips lifted upward. Happiness flowed through him, warming his skin like the rays of an early summer sun. As his dimples crinkled, his smile shined like the stars in the sky, with no bright city lights to dim them. Butterfly started fluttering in his stomach as he had a wonderful, warm and fuzzy feeling buzz throughout his body. It was not nervousness or excitement, but nostalgia.

Quickly taking another sip of the soup, He indulged himself in it's marvelous taste. His worries were nothing, but mere background thought that hid away from the pure happiness that overtook Midoriya's mind. The taste of his mother's cooking was a breath of fresh air for him since his diet consisted mostly of junk food and whatever they were serving at the school. It was the best meal that he had in ages, but he had to admit it though, everyone usually believes that their mother makes the best food. With his cheeks pumping up like a hamster, He continued to scarf down the food and let it fall into the void that was his stomach. Like the dying sea, the soup in the bowl shrank with each dip of the spoon.

Finishing the food, he pushed it to the side before thanking his mother, "Thanks for the food, It is just as good as I remember it to be! Anywho, what's been happening in your life lately? My schedule has just been filled with school so it's kind of hard to keep up with the best mom ever."

"Oh, don't flatter me," Eyes crinkling, a pleasant smile tugged at the corners of her lips as she dissolved into giggles before answering, "My life has been a little less eventful since you moved into the dorms, but as much as I hate to admit it I do miss the chaos."

Starting to twiddle with the spoon in his fingertips, Midoriya snickered and turned back to his mother, "I'm glad you missed me and my antics, because it would be kind of messed up if you didn't. And similarly to you, I hate to admit that I'm kind of feeling attention-starved as well."

"Oh, you're feeling attention-starved, but don't you have that sweet little brunette girl to spend time with? You're awfully close with her, in fact I would dare to say that you're closer than normal friends would be." The chubby woman joked with a trail of giggles following after her words.

With his heart somehow both stopping and running a million beats a second, he stuttered as he shot back a reply, " U-Uraraka and I are not dating! We're just really close friends, that's it. And when I said attention-starved, I meant that I was starved of having some good old-fashioned mom and son bonding time not the kind of attention you were thinking of."

Each word stumbling its way out of his mouth like a drunken sailor, his cheeks flustered into a shade of deep red. Forming on the corners of his forehead, little drops of sweat slid down his skin as he pressed his lips into a thin, but anxious smile. While this was happening, the juniper haired woman just continued to watch her son's face fluster up. Breaking it into a soft giggle, her face slowly started turning red, but not as red as Midoriya. Like an audible hug, her soft giggles floating through the air and enveloped everyone around into a tickling embrace. Getting infected by her Joy, a small laugh made its way through Midoriya's sealed lips as he attempted to hide his tomato red face.

The laughs died out, the high schooler smile of laughter turned into one of content as he released a deep exhale through his nose. Exhaling and inhaling, his facial features drifted back to normality. Despite the fact that his lips stretched into a smile, butterflies still lingered in his stomach; their constant flapping riling up his senses, but he suppressed his flustered attitude.

After all of their giggles had washed out, the two of them continued to bounce off of each other with play for responses. The conversation has moved from topic to topic, starting off with school related things and then evolving into unrelated topics. Smiling and laughing the whole way through, both of them were indulged in each other's presence. As the conversation slowed down and the laughs were becoming more and more infrequent the noise of the TV finally made its way to Midoriya's ear, but he wasn't fully invested.

That was until he heard the reporter on the news channel say, "Now that we're done talking about the sports, let's transfer over to Mis. Yabusame who has a bunch of information regarding the shocking and surprising hero attacks happening around the city." With his ears perking up like a rabbit and his attention caught, he looked at the screen and watched it flicker to the other reporter.

The female reporter had tan colored skin along with crimson red eyes. Her hair was colored a blood orange and it was tied into braided pigtails that curve upwards, the tips of which ended with a flame which were probably caused by her quirk. Tightening her grip on the stack of slightly disheveled papers, her eyes glanced down at the notes for a split second before looking at the camera. Just behind her with a blue screen that displayed images of low ranking Heroes; Their faces slightly blurred due to the size of the picture.

Parting her lips into a stoic smile, she quickly glanced at the notes before reporting on the news, "In the past couple of weeks, there have been eight reports of low to middle ranking heroes committing crimes. These crimes range from simple ones such as stealing to extreme one such as destruction of private and public property. Police forces and other heroes are working hard to try to figure out why their fellow Justice seekers are turning over to the dark side. If more information is released, there will be a follow-up to this interesting case!"

"How could someone just throw their career down the drain like that?" His mother's tone was oddly sad before she followed it up with something a bit more cheerful, "Welp, on the bright side the police are taking down those corrupt heroes pretty quickly. And on an even brighter side, it makes me appreciate you and the genuine heroes even more!"

Tangling his fingers in his hair and tugging it, Midoriya mumbled underneath his breath, "Yeah" He planned on saying more than a single word answer, but his mouth became dry of words when an idea pinged into his head.

While rubbing his hand across his forehead and letting out a little growl, the feeling of annoyance and guilt blossomed in his head. As if stuck underwater, everything was slow and wobbled as he sat at the edge of a chair. His lips press into a thin line, trying to hold back his tongue and mind from giving any more attention to that little idea. All he could hear was his own breathing, his chest rising up and down. This was all too confusing, this was fake right. This wouldn't be the first time his imagination made up a nonsensical theory, but something in the back of his mind pressured him into believing that this wasn't just a theory. He wanted to forget the whole thing, but the idea stuck to him like honey or a bad rash. As much as he tried to get rid of it, each time it would come back stronger and stickier than the time before. The details lined up perfectly, so perfectly that they couldn't have been coincidence.

"Hello, earth to Midoriya? Is everything okay?" His mother asked, her voice somewhat concerned, echoing around the room and bouncing around Midoriya's head. She smiles at him, it's soft and welcoming, but it did nothing to stop his theorizing mind.

"S-sorry! I was just spacing out, no need to worry about me." he muttered, not giving her a satisfying answer. She frowned, noticing the conflicting feelings on his face. Rolling her eyes, she knew that he was just saying sorry to appease her and it bothered her that he wasn't telling her the truth. Watching her shift in behavior, he told her the truth, "Okay, you caught me. I actually wasn't spacing out, I was thinking about something."

Her shoulders dropped, the annoyance flowing out of her body. Looking up, she rested her elbow on the table and placed her chin on the heel of her hand before asking another question, "What were you thinking about?"

"Something that I promised my friends I wouldn't think about. But here I am, still thinking about it even when I'm not supposed to!" He breathed, the guilt apparent in his tone, not even making an attempt to hide it. As soon as he said it he wished that he hadn't, immediately wanted to take it back. She giggled at his response, before putting a hand on Midoriyai's shoulder, which caused him to freeze up once more.

"There's no such thing as a bad idea, unless it involves murder, but if it doesn't it isn't a bad idea." She pointed out, looking directly in his eyes. His glare sent shivers down the teenager's spine, causing a nervous chuckle to escape his chapped lips. Afterwards, she continued to speak, "No matter how much you care about the opinions of your friends, you shouldn't let them dictate what you do. Those thoughts form in your head, not theirs! So they don't have the right to tell you to stop thinking about something."

She did make a good point, but it didn't wash away. The thought rang in his ears, echoing powerfully. Two sides battled over whether or not he should give in to this impulse. One side was logical and firm, soothingly attempting to remind him that what he was doing was creeping out his friends. The second side yelled, kicking and screaming for him to fall further down the rabbit hole. His words had escaped him, rendering him as a helpless watcher in the argument between both sides.

His face visibly hardens, eyes fixed on the metal table placed in front of them. His Emerald eyes darken and sorrow filling his features. He wished that his thought would stay on track for just one second. He had always been able to identify them clearly, always been able to express them because we're on the lighter side. The Green haired boy's chest swarmed with conflicting responses, congesting him with bitter feelings and leaving him a helpless watcher in the war that was plaguing his mind. It rattled the student to his core, his instincts told him that he shouldn't give into his curiosity, but just like Alice, he fell down the rabbit hole.

"If I get kicked out of my friend group, I'm blaming you for giving me bad advice." He said suddenly, a wobbly smile slowly spread across Midoriya's face as he stood up from the chair. Glancing at the clock and realizing how late it was, he called over his shoulder, "9 o'Clock already! Time moves really fast, doesn't it? Welp, I guess I better get going before the others get worried about my absence."

"Alrighty! Stay safe on your way back, and remember that I always love you!" She replies, smiling meekly and giving a little wave. She tapped her fingers against the table as she gestured at the exit with her thumb. Quietly nodding, Midoriya quickly gave his mother a goodbye before grabbing his things and shuffling out the door.

When exiting the apartment, the sound of the door clicking behind him filled his ears. The sound was barely above a whisper, but it sounded like a scream in the quiet atmosphere. Blinking, Midoyira stares down at his shoes, which suddenly seem to have a mind of their own as they glide silently towards the sky; wondering what the next day is going to bring to him.
