Eighteen

"Hey, Shota, you okay?" the blonde's voice rang in his ears.

"Fine," he replied in a monotone voice. Yet, the way he answered carried a drip of poison at the end syllable, causing the Voice Hero's spine to spike. It had a hint of anger, but there was that emotion that he couldn't place: it wasn't his usual tiredness, moody, or sarcastic remark. The emotionless tone and the stoic face hadn't helped him in deciphering it, but it wasn't enough to tell him that he was hiding something.

Aizawa Shota, better known as Eraserhead, wasn't a known liar, but right now, he was lying.

The English teacher narrowed his eyes in suspicion, he knew that the ebony-haired man wasn't afraid to say what was on his mind. Whether it was harmful or offensive, he would say it, he had no trouble pronouncing the terrible truth of others. Yet, he was lying about something as simple as to a question to see if he was fine. It was a usual response for him to reply with "no," then he'd assume it was due to tiredness or patrol, and that was the question. When he did reply with "fine" it would usually be followed by a sigh or some sort of sign of annoyance, but this time was a swift and immediate response.

"You're lying, Sho."

The ravenette sighed frustratingly, pressing a hand against his forehead as he was bent over the stack of papers, before turning around in his office chair to face his best friend.

It was true that he was lying, but that didn't mean he was going to admit it. Hizashi didn't need to be pulled out of his busy schedule just to listen to his damn problems. Most likely, he wouldn't even understand, or able to help. His issue was more than just some simple resolution thought up in a matter of ten minutes. He didn't need to know he was still dealing with Y/N's absence. Sometimes, he wished that he wasn't so attentive when it came to him, but maybe that's how the blonde became his best friend and remained his best friend with all these years.

"I'm fine."

"What happened? Did you let go of a crook? Couldn't save someone...? Missing people?"

The glasses-wearing male noticed that the other flinched at the last phrase, causing him to raise an eyebrow. Was he still recalling their old childhood friends? That was unusual of him to do, he was quick and adaptable enough to know how to let go, but was he still hooked up on Oboro's death? Or maybe Y/N's disappearance? She left without a trace and even her own boyfriend didn't know why. What had happened over the weekends, was he remembering his past? Shota's past was the only thing that had made him react when it was mentioned, well, the only thing other than cats.

"Were you... thinking about... Y/N," he whispered cautiously, fully aware he would have his ass beaten by him for mentioning her name. Everytime after she disappeared, it was like every time her name was uttered at all, a curse was casted upon by the Erasure hero, the affected was the one who had said her name in the first place. He feared his wrath, but he couldn't help but notice lately the male has been far more aloof and distant with everyone, more than he has been normally. It was no secret that the underground hero was inexperienced with expressing his emotions, mainly because he didn't feel any emotions other than anger, exhaustion, annoyance, and boredom, but also because he buried them when two of his closest friends were noticeably gone.

"Tch, why would I think about her? Just thinking about her makes me sick," the other male replied. He continued to deny it, he continued to deny that he was feeling vulnerable and cracking under the pressure of his guilt and grief that originated more than fifteen years ago, he would always deny that he was feeling any melancholy feelings. That was weakness after all, it was something that could be exploited and used against him in any aspect of life. Hizashi knew that, and it infuriated him that he would try to use that to get an answer from him.

Meanwhile, the blonde was shocked to have realized that the male had not tried to correct him, or physically harmed him. Perhaps he didn't notice it, but his money was that he was thinking about Y/N. 'Just thinking about her makes me sick' was a different altercation to how he usually felt about her, he was disgusted by the mention of her so much that she refused to be referred to by her name, and it's been years since Shota allowed him to call her by that name. He almost forgot how to pronounce it, even though it swung by his mind often, but being able to actually say it wasn't like how he was thinking. Something had happened to the black-haired man during the weekends that had to have been related to Y/N, something that tore down his thoughts that caused him to not see her as anything but revolting. He felt 'sick' in a different way, he wasn't so angry at her, rather than... he didn't know what he felt now towards her, but it relieved him that he didn't feel the same anger towards her.

"We both know you're not fooling anyone, Shota. What happened during the weekends?"

"What I usually do, sleep, go on patrol, eat, etc. What does this have to do with anything?" he snapped at the blonde, questioning and irritated at what he was trying to achieve from this interrogation. What was he thinking? Was he trying to connect her to what he did in the last 3 days? Hizashi, was unfortunately, seemed more intelligent than he let on, although most of the time he was dim-witted, he was good at picking up signs and giving out social interactions advice.

"Something happened over the weekends, right? Something that made you change your view about Y/N over that span of time? After all, you aren't threatening to slit my throat from mentioning her name," the blonde tested him, acknowledging that he was just dipping into danger waters and crossed a border he should not have with the male.

"Just fuck off and go away."

There were those words again, when he and Nemuri confronted him about why he was acting so cold and distant.

"Just fuck off, will you?"

He was angry, that was obvious, but it's not the same anger as mentally not wanting to remember her ever again. He hated the remembrance of her, but now, it's like he's beared through it somehow, he was able to deal with it somehow. He revisited memory lane, didn't he? Why? Was he looking for answers?

"I know you're lying, Shota. I'll be going since my class is next. Shota, we're talking about this at some point in time soon."

"Tch."

The blonde male sighed as the last of his students shuffled past the doorway, leaving him alone in the empty classroom. He ran his hair through his gelled hair, smoothing them out as he pondered about his ebony haired friend. He recognized that he was troubled, it didn't take a genius to tell when he was truly trying to hide what troubled him, during times like those, he was the most in denial about struggling. Eyeing his phone, he noticed the time was his lunch period, then remembered it was also Nemuri's lunch break as well.

Detaching his hand from his hair, he took a hold of his phone, pressing on the power button and then unlocking his password with 1184 as the code. He scrolled through his contacts then pressing on the purplenette's profile picture, pausing for a moment to think about what to say. Typing diligently, he waited for an answer as he pressed send.

Loud Ass

Can we talk? Just us 2? It's about Sho. My classroom.

NEMUri
Yeah, sure. On my way.

After receiving the female's response, he opened up his social media in order to pass the time for the time being. Hearing the door clicking, he looked up from the device.

"Hey." Nemuri frowned at the unusual greet, normally it would have been his cheerful and obnoxious yelling that greeted her, but at this point she didn't mind.

"What's up with Sho?" Hizashi bit his lip.

"I don't know why or what, but seems like he's... indulging into his past again."

Nemuri raised her eyebrows. Shota wasn't one to care or dwell in his past, even with all that happened, he never let anything from back then bother him. Not now anyways, after all, he would have said that remembering the past wasn't necessary, his 'roots' weren't necessary. Knowing him, remembering the past would only feel like a burden to him, and that it would distract him from what was the most important: his career as a teacher and a pro-hero. It did confuse her of why Shota would try to start remembering, but she was missing the point of why this was such a concerning thing.

"And what's wrong with that?"

"Nem... he's remembering... he's remembering Y/N. He's... we could finally get answers from after all these years of him dodging the question," he whispered. He suddenly felt guilty for suggesting the idea though.

"You know that more than anything he's vulnerable when it's about Y/N. You want to use that to get answers about her? Maybe it's just best if we never knew. Or maybe he wasn't lying at all, she could have just-"

This triggered the voice hero, he was angry that his questions about her were always avoided. He was tired of getting ignored, tired of not getting answers, tired of not knowing what happened to Y/N when his best friend knew all of it. He clenched his fists tightly, as he bit his lip once again, before bluttering out "Nemuri! How could that even be a possibility?"

"Nemuri, Shota lied to us! Can't you see, can't you feel it! He was lying to us the whole time about what happened to Y/N! Why would he still be like... like this! Like this if all she did was-"

"You would be feeling this too if the last words you said to your girlfriend was to 'fuck off' too! Hizashi, you really think that this is something that Shota would lie to us about? Yes, he's avoiding the question, but you know that Shota isn't a liar, it clearly disturbs him, that's why he never answers! He's still guilty, having your one and only love to up and leave without a trace or explanation. This is using him when he needs us the most! Shota is still trying to recover from that, and you're just-"

"This is for what I deserve, Nemuri! This is for what we deserve. Can't you see? He lied to us... he lied that he was fine. He's not fine, because there's obviously something he's hiding!"

The both of them were silent for a few tense moments.

"Look, Hizashi, if you want to become a detective, step right up. But Shota has his privacy, and if he says he's fine, he's fine. I'm not gonna barge in. And don't you even think about pressuring him, or I'll whip your ass."

"Yeah, yeah, okay Nem. Fine," he sighed as he watched the R-Rated hero step out of his classroom. He ran a hand in his hair once again, then hearing the growl of his stomach.

He sighed once again.

Heading to the teacher lounge to grab his lunch, his mind wandered as he walked through the halls of the school. Shota Aizawa, his best friend, is hiding something, and lying to the both of them about Y/N, he knew that he was lying since a few years ago as he started thinking. Who still was bothered by someone that just moved away? Sure, Y/N was his best friend and the person he loved, but still, who was still upset about someone that's been gone for over fifteen years. Yes, she's never written back or ever sent a trace of where she was, but he of all should know that people just came and went.

So what was special about Y/N?

Hizashi shook his head as he turned another corner. That was a stupid question to ask. Y/N was everything to Shota, she was his world, his reason to wake up everyday, and his reason to sleep soundly in a bed everyday. Y/N was the only one that could make him feel either at his weakest or at his strongest, the only one in which he could let his guard down around, and the only one who was truly ever honest with his feelings. Y/N was the pillar in his life, the tallest tower that supported him, the first person he would think about when the 'person you care about the most' popped up. It was no surprise why Shota would still be hung up on this for a few years.

But it's been fifteen years, fifteen years and he was still bothered! He was even trying to remember her again!

Shota Aizawa, also known as Eraserhead, was probably the most complicated person he knew, the most secretive and concealing human he's met. Shota Aizawa...

Was a liar now.
