Break

Katsuki Bakugou

Some days were harder than others. Pro Hero Katsuki Bakugou spent the past five years searching for his mate and child restlessly, to no avail. After graduating from U.A. and starting a career working as Ground Zero, Katsuki told himself he wouldn't ever give up on finding Izuku. Even as his career blossomed and he assumed the role as the number one hero, the Alpha never stopped searching. The Omega hunted his dreams and Katsuki wondered if he'd ever see those starstruck emerald eyes and chocolate dusted freckles ever again.

Not only was Izuku taken from him too soon, but his child was somewhere out there as well. Kirishima stuck by his side through the years, spending his free time searching alongside his mate, Denki, for any clues to find Izuku and their child. The last place to have offered any insight was the video footage taken from a convenience store a few towns away. At the time, the Pro Heros and local law enforcement went to search the area, only to come up empty-handed. It was as if Izuku and his captors had just disappeared from the face of the earth. It didn't make any sense.

It kept Katsuki up at night, and when he wasn't struggling to sleep he was struggling to keep his mind from slipping. People told him to give up the search and advised him to prepare himself for the idea that Izuku might not be alive anymore.

All Might had passed away a few years ago. Before he passed, Katsuki begged him to pass down his powers in hopes of keeping his and Katsuki's legacy alive. The Hero refused to, saying that it wasn't the Alpha's destiny. All Might died, still preaching about his bright and capable student 'Young Midoriya'. The Omega had been the last to receive All Might's power and Katsuki prayed that it gave his mate the strength to stay alive.

His apartment felt more and more empty as the days passed. When he wasn't at work, Katsuki was home where he spent countless hours using his Hero privilege to collect any data that might help him find his missing family. Katsuki had friends on all sides of the world who were on his side, offering their support and services when needed. It had been years since he had last has taken a break from his ultimate mission. A mission most of the world had given up on a long time ago, but not Katsuki.

A buzzing in his pocket pulled him out of his thoughts. He should have known that he wouldn't get a free weekend when it was his week to be on call. Katsuki sighed when he saw the caller ID: Aizawa.

"What do you want? It's the weekend," he rumbled with annoyance. Everyone with half a brain cell knew that the Alpha spent his weekends focusing on finding Izuku. Sure, he was on call and Hero duty came first, but his number one priority would always be Izuku Midoriya.

"Is that any way to greet your old professor? Get the stick out of your ass, kid. I need you to chaperone a field trip. We're leaving in a few hours and my last chaperone canceled."

"Fuck. What about your back up chaperone? I'm not wasting my weekend keeping a bunch of snotty-nosed brats out of trouble," the Alpha growled in frustration. His fingers pushed his hair out of his face while eyes scanned over the countless documents strown all about his desk.

"You are my back up, Katsuki. It will do you some good to get out of the house. Also, if my memory serves me correctly, you were once a 'snotty-nosed brat' that I had to keep from getting into trouble."

"Yeah, yeah, whatever. I guess I don't have much of a choice. It will give me a chance to show those punks who's number one," he grinned while pushing away from the desk and stalking off towards his bedroom. He needed to pack some clothes at least before Aizawa stole him away from a few days. "How long is this trip and where the hell are you taking me?"

"The joys of being a Pro Hero. You may be number one, but I can still kick your ass, kid." Katsuki could hear the smirk in Aizawa's voice. A low growl bubbled up his throat. "We're going to the capital. The kids need to learn a little hero history as well as hero laws. They will get to visit the sparring arena there, so that's why you need to be there. You know how the young kids are; hormonal and full of fire to take your place as number one someday. We don't need infighting," Aizawa explained with a sigh. Katsuki understood that all-too-well. He was just like them when he was younger.

"I'll be at the school in an hour. Is this a 'bring-your-own-alcohol' type field trip?" Katsuki couldn't help but smirk as he threw a couple of shirts into a duffle bag before stuffing some jeans and other necessities in after everything else.

"You can have alcohol when I can have a full night's sleep."

"I'll take that as a 'no'."

The students that Aizawa was taking on a trip weren't that bad, surprisingly. Katsuki didn't have to do much on the bus ride there, only yell at one brat who wouldn't stop talking about some god-awful video game he was playing. The Alpha didn't want to be stuck on a bus with a bunch of loud children in the first place.

Something about this situation hit him with waves of nostalgia. Katsuki sat alone in a seat, staring out the window as trees whisked by, and somewhere inside his mind, he couldn't shake the Deja Vu. The last time he was on a bus with Aizawa and a group of U.A. students was when he attended his own training camp in the middle of the woods - with Izuku. That had been a long time ago.

Katsuki ignored the pain in his chest, holding down the souring emotions that threatened to overflow. He was a goddamn hero, after all. A few bitter memories wouldn't break him.

After a long, six-hour bus ride to the capital, Katsuki was tasked with taking a headcount of all the students before they got off the bus. Aizawa was leading the group while the alpha hung back, making sure none of the students wandered off or got lost. Already this was a boring trip and Katsuki couldn't wait to find the bar at the hotel they were staying at.

"Mr. Bakugou?" A small voice startled Katsuki out of his inner grumbling. A young girl walked by his side, staring up at him with curiosity. Katsuki scowled at the student but grunted for her to continue with whatever she was bothering him with. "I was wondering if you could give me some tips? My quirk is a bit unpredictable, and I know when you were younger, you had trouble with your explosions being too unpredictable and strong. I don't want to hurt anyone with my quirk," she explained while continuing to follow the group of students towards the hotel.

Katsuki looked down at the girl again and frowned. One part of his job as the number one Pro Hero, Ground Zero, was to interact with the public and uphold peace and hope. Katsuki was never good at being a positive public figure, even more so as of lately. Everyone knew the Alpha because of Izuku. Katsuki had risen to the top because of Izuku's legacy that was left behind. People felt sorry for him because Izuku was taken. Once the public found out the Omega had been with child, it caused an uproar. People were terrified and heartbroken. Some people even blamed Katsuki. It took a long time to build his image up. No one hated the Alpha, but they pitied him, and that was almost just as bad as hate.

"Time and practice, kid. I know that sounds like some bullshit answer, but it's not. When you're born with a powerful quirk, it can take a long time to master. It took me a long time to gain control of mine. I was overly violent because I knew I was strong, but that don't mean shit. You ain't going to be a good hero if you're causing destruction everywhere you go. Take your time and practice," he answered, letting his eyes trail up the group of second-year students before landing on Aizawa at the head of the group. "Oh, and listen to your professor. He knows more than we all do. There's a reason he hasn't fuckin' killed over yet. The man is strong and wise. He will teach you what you need to know, just keep your head up and don't even think about giving up," Katsuki grumbled.

The girl smiled brightly, and something about that too-bright-smile made his gut twist, especially when her cheek dimpled in exactly where Izuku's used to. "Thank you, Mr. Bakugou! I'm glad you're here with us all!" Before Katsuki could really reply, she was taking off running towards a group of her friends while waving back at the Alpha.

It had been five years and still, everything reminded him of Izuku. In the strangest of places, he'd notice something that made his heart skip a beat. To this day, Katsuki couldn't look at a pregnant person without feeling his heart shatter to bits withing his chest, reminding him of what he lost, and what he was afraid of never finding again.

Katsuki tried not to let his sadness run his life, but it had taken much practice. The Alpha didn't heal overnight, just as he didn't break overnight either. It had taken time for his sadness to become all-consuming, and taken even more time for the Alpha to pull himself back together. Katsuki still didn't consider himself healed; he didn't think he'd ever be fully healed. However, his past didn't determine his future, and as the years dragged on, Katsuki dragged on with them.

That night, the Pro Hero laid in bed with his notepad, scribbling down ideas that could help him find his family. Even if the Alpha had exhausted every idea his brain provided, Katsuki refused to give up hope that Izuku and his child would one day be reunited with him. He might have been borderline obsessed with the cause, but how could he not be? It had always been funny to him that no other Alpha ever challenged him with his desires and fire to find Izuku. It was always the Betas and Omegas that questioned his sanity for having spent the last five years hunting a cold trail. They never could understand. The Alpha's understood. Losing a mate, as well as a child, was every Alpha's worst nightmare and biggest fear, and the possessive side of him refused to give up on the mission.

However, Katsuki wondered just how long he would last. He was afraid of what might be uncovered one day while searching for the Omega. Katsuki refused to believe that his mate wasn't alive wherever he was, but the more time that passed, the more he began to fear the worst. He wondered just how much he could take before he would actually break.
