NAME MEANING:

Caius - Means 'rejoice' and is derived from the Latin language. He was named Caius by his mother and father because of how hard of pregnancy it was for them to have him. His mother had gone through a few miscarriages before then, and while Caius wasn't any easier than the rest of them, he made it and his parents were overjoyed when he lived.

Edmund - his middle name is named after his father! it means 'prosperity', 'riches' and 'protector' and is derived from the English language

Kingston - his last name of course; it means 'king's settlement'

began to prefer going by Edmund or "Eddie" (after his experience in the war) since he thinks his first name is a cruel irony... only call him Caius if you want to piss him off more than anyone/anything.

BACKGROUND:

Caius's life was great before the war. Note- before. His parents (Camila and Edmund Kingston) had had a rough time having a child. They were somewhat shunned by those who believed miscarriages to be "sinful"... that was until they had Caius. He was their pride and joy when he was born and his parents loved him so much. Caius's life up to the war was notably normal- his family was quite wealthy and they all lived comfortably. Caius went to school up until he was 18.

Then the war began.

Caius's entire life was flipped upside down. He was going to go to college but those plans were changed when he got drafted at the age of 19. Around his 20th birthday, he finished his training and was sent out to fight. That's when things really began to hit hard. In the war, boys were forced to become men and all innocence and optimism for the future had to be thrown out the window. You weren't allowed to value your life or future anymore because that all belonged to the war. Caius's values, beliefs, morals- everything he knew was being questioned in his mind as he daily fought and killed men, with guns, cannons, and sometimes his bare hands... The only thing that seemed to be keeping him sane was Anthony- his closest friend- no- he was closer than that. Caius loved him. He loved him with every fiber in him. Anthony seemed to see the brightness in such a dark setting and could always make Caius smile and feel like he was still a human being- still normal. They loved each other more than anything and that included themselves. One time, Anthony and Caius were up for patrol while people slept to make sure that the enemy didn't pull a secret attack since they were so close to their territory. However, they should've stayed further away- but their captain KNEW that they were close. He was a double agent. And Caius had trusted him as being one of the most decorated soldiers in the unit. That was a bitter mistake of Caius's since the captain ended up being a double agent. And sure enough, the other side ambushed them and within the terror and chaos of the attack, Anthony saved Caius's life with his own. To this day, Caius can still remember seeing Anthony shove him out of the way of that horse which one of the opposing fighters had been riding, Anthony being trampled. He got badly hurt, an old wound he had been recovering from getting reopened even worse than it had been before. The ambush had been mostly successful too so no doctors were able to save Anthony. Edmund's biggest regret was the fact that he couldn't save him and he still blames himself although he says he knows there was nothing he could do. In that same ambush (which Edmund was surprised he even survived), he was badly injured while attempting to escape. He suffered an injury to his left eye, causing it to go blind with a scar running across it as well as a shot to his spine. He was lucky enough to not be put in a permanently paralyzed-coma-like state. However, the doctors have told him that he only has so long before his body goes into a full state of paralysis. So, he's made it routine to regularly put his body through physical training and dieting so that he can stay healthy, hoping that he'll gain at least one more day to function and live. The doctors don't know an exact date they expect his body to quit on him but they've told him in about 15 years.

A majority of Edmund's unit died. Those who survived were severely injured like himself or were traitors to the other side. Some of Eddie's closest war companions were found to be traitors. After the ambush, Eddie and about a handful of others were able to be rescued and Edmund was sent back home to heal and be taken care of. He was 22 when he was finally returned home, living in his parent's home as of now so that he could recover. Nobody believes that Edmund will be able to recover fully- except for Eddie himself. Maybe to a fault, the veteran, now 23, believes that he'll be able to get back to almost if not, complete healthiness.

PERSONALITY:

Caius was known by family and friends as a very loving and kind man. He was always respectful, even towards people who didn't like him or who he didn't like, and rarely was one to talk behind their backs. The young man took life slow and cherished it- he saw beauty in everything around him and loved living. A simple thing that some took for granted. Caius looked towards the future with hope and love in his eyes and he wanted nothing more than to grasp ahold of whatever life gave him. He wanted to explore, to experiment, to see things, try things.
This caring man, however, doesn't exist anymore. Edmund's perspective on life was forgotten the moment he was drafted for the army. Things grew hard for him and so his personality twisted into the life he lived- cold and callous. His parents, his friends, his neighbors, his old school mates feel they hardly know him anymore. He rarely talked to them when he came back- rarely smiled, rarely seemed to listen for that matter. It took a few months to get him back to... somewhat normal and responsive. Most of the time when he talked to family, he snapped at them. Physically and emotionally, Edmund distanced himself from those he once held so close to his heart as much as he could. If it weren't for his injuries, he probably would've moved far away to live alone.
Edmund stays home in his parent's manor a majority of the time. His nature is distant and even cruel sometimes, causing many people to shy away from him as he seems to no longer have any regard for other's feelings. However, deep down, buried beneath the layers of walls inside him, his heart is the same as it was before he was sent off to war. He really does care- he cares so so much about those around him. But Eddie is afraid- terrified. That's all he knows how to feel nowadays. He knows the war can't reach him where he is, but it feels as though it is always with him. Everywhere he goes outside of his home reminds him of the things he's seen, the people he once knew. Part of him wants to scream about it to the entire world around them for everyone and every creature to know, but he remains silent and secluded in his home. The last thing Edmund wants to do is get too close to someone and scare them away or lose them like he lost Anthony. So he stays where he stayed before the war and where he sometimes wonders if he'll stay forever.

HOBBIES:

- feeding the birds and horses on his parents' estate
- reading and studying poems or other literature
- watching the clouds and sky by his window
- working out and attempting to get his body back into a stronger physical state
- helps his mother with work around the home as he did before the war still

+LIKES/-DISLIKES:

+ his hobbies
+ reading especially; distracts his mind from thinking too much of the war
+ birds
+ home
+ his parents (most of the time even if he doesn't always show it)
+ physical training
+ music, just listening to it; nothing fancy about it, it's just calming for him
- his parents 'encouraging' him to get out of the house and/or to meet girls
- when his body tenses up occasionally; it sometimes 'freezes' and he might not be able to move very efficiently. this can last for short or long periods of time and has sometimes caused him to need a wheelchair (he hates the wheelchair)
- feeling like he's being babysat daily since he can't function like normal, like before his injuries
- his PTSD and anxiety (in certain settings); he seems to always feel like he's on edge and he hates how he's forgotten how to relax; he remembers things from the war at random times and it's caused him to have an anxiety attack or two although he also hates people bringing those times up
- being/feeling vulnerable and allowing people to grow close to him
- death and everything to do with it
- his scars and his blind eye
- talking, thinking, breathing the war; he hates it and everything to do with it but he can never get it out of his head and has no idea how to cope with everything he's seen/done

OPINIONS ON THE TOPICS:

- SEXISM

he's seen a few women fight and he knows how strong they are. if it weren't for Anthony, he might've been more of a sexist prick than he currently is. while he doesn't quite believe women and men are equal, Edmund knows he'd be a fool to wholeheartedly think that. it's a topic he contemplates and wrestles with a bit

- THE MARRIAGE MART

hates it. hates it almost as much as he hates the war.
or at least that's how he acts about it.
Edmund mostly is just afraid of it. he's afraid of opening up to someone as he did to Anthony and he's terrified of losing them too. he doesn't want to be in it but being the young bachelor he still is, he knows his parents won't stop pestering him until he most likely finds a wife

- THE ROYAL FAMILY

indifferent more or less.
he wishes that they hadn't gone through with the war or that they would end it already but he doesn't hate them. he still feels a strong sense of duty to the royals from what he had been told to believe in training and in school even. the royal family are the rulers of the land and he feels pride for them still and an urge that they must still be protected and that they're fit to take care of the land, even if he doesn't agree with their choice to fight like they are against neighboring foes.

 - HOMOSEXUALITY

being bisexual in the 1800s isn't the easiest thing.
but Anthony taught Eddie that it was okay.
if it weren't for his wartime lover, there would be a lot of pent-up internalized homophobia in Edmund as of right now but he doesn't judge others.
they say they're straight, they're straight- they're gay, then they're gay.
he doesn't care who loves who so long as he isn't the one trying to be loved like that.
