"Don't worry, everything will be alright now." - Ghost

Chapter XV

Holding up the large black feather, I absently twirled it around between my fingers while I tried to comprehend everything that happened to my life so far.

The creatures from folklore and mythologies are all real, there are truly beings that go bump in the night. Angels are real too – even though many believe this to be differently. Ghost is my Guardian Angel and I have met the Archangel Metatron and a fallen angel who calls himself Lucas, which is probably not even his real name – nor is Daniel. I have encountered dragons and the Alpha of New York, who I am pretty sure is actually Lucas. My ancestor is a freaking Nephilim and the son of the Seraphim Cassiel. I also have a faerie ancestor and my grandparents are hunters – and so am I those days. And I can't forget the fact that my co-worker is a werewolf.

And apparently, I don't just have to save the world, but the entire fucking universe from utter destruction, together with the fallen angel who might or might not have tried to kill me not too long ago.

"This is crazy," I sighed, my fingers gently stroking over the soft feather. I watched the light of my lamp reflect off it for a while, mesmerized by how it has a beautiful blue glow in direct light.

If Lucas is indeed the Alpha, he sure has beautiful wings, I thought in amazement. Gently placing the feather on my bureau, I wrapped the blankets around myself and closed my eyes. Falling in a deep slumber.

~~~~~~
My eyes opened and I looked at my surroundings in bewilderment. I appeared to be on a small rowboat in the middle of the ocean. My heart beat loudly in my throat and I gripped the sides of the boat tightly in my hands, my nails digging in the wood and my fingers growing pale from how tight I held it.
Thousands of stars twinkled down at me, almost in mockery.
The small boat rocked from my sudden movement and I froze completely, hoping that I wouldn't fall in the deep and unknown ocean. "I am dreaming. This is just a dream," I squeaked in a high voice, yet I wasn't so sure of it myself anymore.
Large waves crashing against the sides of the boat, I shrieked when the boat went almost sideways. I leaned in opposite direction and – somehow – managed not to fall and drown in the dangerous waves just below me.
Seawater splashed up into my face and I could taste salt on my lips. My heartrate sped up. I've had some rather realistic dreams before – like the vision Ghost send me – but not something like this. And it felt so different too... in Ghost's vision I knew that I was safe, that nothing would ever happen to me. Now I did not felt so sure.
Feeling a piercing gaze on me, I looked up and saw Lucas standing in the distance.
The fallen angel stood on the surface of the water, unhindered by the tall waves; on the contrary, he seemed to be the one who controlled them for the waves moved away from him. His black hair was styled up slightly at the front and his dark unnerving eyes stared straight at me, unblinking. The tips of his ears appeared slightly pointed as well.
Whatever little doubt I had of him being a fallen angel was gone when I saw the grand black wings sprouting out of his upper-back, neatly folded on his back. His wings were large enough that the tips of his wings almost touched the water he was standing on.
Lucas grinned, revealing his sharp fangs and he held his hand out my way, palm forward. I watched on in both awe and horror how black lines crept out from underneath the sleeve of the black trench coat he was wearing. The eerie lines curled over his arm like furious snakes and eventually his finger-tips became black as well, the same light-absorbing shade as the black swirling lines.
I felt the power radiate off him from where I was seated in my small, wooden rowboat. The magic was almost visible, reminding me of black lightning and smoke curling off his standing form. His eyes turned a glowing, fierce red and white became black, his slitted pupils flaring up in an icy blue light. His arm went higher and higher and the waves became taller and more vicious.
I held my breath, eyes wide when I realized what he was doing. Lucas smirked one last time and his left eye dropped in a wink when he lowered his palm. As if waiting for their command, the tsunami hurled my way, reaching up towards the sky and expanding the entire horizon.
Before I could even comprehend what was happening, the tsunami crashed against my little boat, smashing it into thousands of pieces and pulling me below the waves. My mouth opened in shock and I tried to scream, but water filled my lungs.
Swimming towards the surface, something clasped around my leg when I had almost broken through the surface. I looked down at my leg, to see completely nothing. An invisible force was dragging me down towards the bottom of the ocean.
Screaming silently, I looked up at the surface. Lucas stood right above me now, his grand wings half-spread now as he stared down at me with his unreadable eyes. I held out my hand towards him, silently begging him to pull me up. He just tilted his head in reply and watched me drown.
A furious inhuman screech was heard even from under water and Lucas' head shot up. I watched how the fallen angel faded from view, but I was still drowning even with the magic-caster now gone.
HARLYNN!! A powerful voice bellowed inside my head, making a headache come up and my ears ring. The invisible force was still pulling me down and the same voice screeched once more, almost in annoyance.
Ghost, I thought, recognizing my Guardian Angel's voice.
Then I saw fire. The entire sky was set ablaze in golden-white flames and somebody broke through the surface of the ocean with a loud splash – flames surrounding Ghost and still burning even under water – and from the fire, a hand reached out to me. I held out my own hand and the other hand clasped around my own. Ghost's veins glowed up in a golden light and so did my own for a millisecond before I was pulled out of the waves. Ghost's arms went around me in a protective manner and he held me close against his firm chest while I gasped for air and choked out the salt water.
I looked up at his inhuman face, both beautiful and alien at the same time, with his sharp, delicate features and pale translucent skin, instead of bones and flesh, fire burned underneath his skin. The moonlight reflected off pale blond hair – creating almost a halo around his head – and he seemed relieved to have reached me on time.
Don't worry, his gentle voice told me, everything will be alright now.
Gently placing his hand against my forehead, the world swirled around me.
A gasp left my mouth and I sat upright in my bed, my pajama dress stuck to my skin from my sweat and I closed my eyes, forcing my hammering heart to calm down.
Harlynn, Ghost's voice said urgently in my head. I looked down to see the large white cat standing over my legs, looking at me in worry.
A sob escaped my throat and before I knew what I was doing, my arms went around the cat and I held him close, my body shook when sobs left my mouth. Ghost let me hold him. "I-I had a horrible dream," I managed to stammer out, trying desperately to stop shaking. I hate water.
That was not a dream, Ghost said. I froze and pulled back slightly.
He had forced your soul out of your body and dumped it in the middle of the Silent Ocean. I searched the entire world to find you, he said, his furry ears flattening on top of his head.
"I," I started, trying to grasp my mind around the face that I had been soulless, "lost my soul."
Only temporarily, Ghost added. I returned it to your physical body.
"Thanks," I said in bewilderment, not exactly knowing what else I was supposed to say. Apparently, Lucas had taken my soul and dumped it in the middle of the... Silent Ocean where he drowned me and Ghost returned my soul to my body. "He could have killed me," I added when realization dawned on me. My subconsciousness kept silent, still shaken up by what had happened.
Ghost shook his head. No, souls cannot drown, he told me. I imagine he just wanted to give you a good scare.
Somehow, Lucas had known about my fear for open waters and had used it against me... Great, just great.
Does he really want me to stay away that badly? I couldn't help but think.
I looked at my alarm clock, just to see that it was only five am in the morning.
A groan left my lips and I fell back on my pillow, staring at the ceiling. Are you going to work today? Ghost asked after a while.
"Yes," I immediately replied.
Are you sure that's such a good idea? I could tell that he was worried about me. I glanced the angel's way and gave him a small smile.
"I will be fine," I said confidently, "I am not going to give him the satisfaction that it shook me up. I will continue with my life."
But you are not going to stay away, Ghost stated.
"Yes."
Ghost's eyes were unreadable when he stared at me for a while, before he jumped off my bed and left the room. I sat up once more and looked around the room, my eyes falling on Lucas' feather and the translations Metatron gave me.
Standing up, I stretched my arms and yawned. It was no use trying to sleep again. Having my soul forced out of my body apparently made me wide awake. I might as well take a shower and get ready for work.
Picking out my clothes for today and having brushed my teeth, I went and took a nice, hot shower afterwards, taking my time.
After roughly thirty minutes, I stepped out of the shower and wrapped a fluffy blanket around myself. My eyes momentarily found the star-shaped birthmark on my hip, before I towel dried my long hair and stepped into my clothes.
Having brushed my hair as well, I went downstairs to get some breakfast - taking my bag with me. I had already put Metatron's translations in it, as well as my gun, holy water and salt. My silver dagger got destroyed when I - unsuccessfully - tried to stab Lucas, so I needed to get a new one.
I should probably visit my grandparents today after work, I decided to myself.
Taking an apple out of the fridge and making my lunch - ham and cheese sandwiches - I scrolled down my phone and replied to some messages coming from Ana and Alec.
Claws ticked against the tiled floor of my kitchen and I looked up, seeing Ghost sway up towards his bowl, where he sat down and stared at me as he patiently waited for me to finish my apple. Glancing at his bowl, a thought entered my mind. "Do you even like cat food?" I asked the angel. Ghost looked up, his ears perking forwards. "You are not even a real cat," I added as an afterthought.
Ghost snorted – which looked really funny as he was in his cat-form. It tastes just fine, he replied, almost offended, much to my own amusement. A wide grin formed on the cat's face, reminding me of the Cheshire Cat. Bacon flavor is my favorite by the way, he added. Even though I don't mind the chicken one.
I shook my head. If you ate something long enough, I guess you would get used to it eventually. "I did not even knew angels needed to eat," I commented, taking the last bite of my apple. I threw it in the bin and went to pick up Ghost's bowl.
We don't really, Ghost replied. Not in the same way that humans do at least. It's more of a luxury.
A gaped at the angel. "If I had known that before," I remarked, "it could have saved me hundreds of dollars. You are pretty expensive."
Ghost's eyes went large and his ears flattened on top of his head, his long tail curling around him as he gave me his most guilty expression. "Okay," I gave in, "I forgive you." I pointed my finger his way as I took out the can of cat food from the cupboards. "Be glad that I have a well-paying job."
I poured the food in the bowl and placed it on the floor. Ghost meowed happily and he started wolfing down his food. And he's supposed to be an angel, my subconsciousness noted in amusement upon seeing how messy he ate.
Bacon! Ghost sighed happily. It's bacon!
"Now I know it's your favorite," I grinned, shrugging my shoulders. I put my lunch box in my bag and went towards the living room, throwing the bag down on the couch and glancing at the clock, seeing that I still had roughly an hour to go until I had to leave.
Shrugging my shoulders, I took my phone from my bag and opened the Wattpad app – but not before I set an alarm – and decided to read some Destiel Fan Fictions to pass the time.
.
The very moment my phone started beeping, I jumped up and threw the bag over my shoulder, heading towards the front door.
Ghost was waiting there for me. I kneeled in front of the white cat and scratched his ear slightly. "Bye, Ghost. Take care, alright?" I said. Ghost hummed in reply. "I will be going to my grandparents after work. So I'll be home later."
Be careful, Ghost warned one last time when I stepped out of the door. I looked over my shoulder, into his worried green eyes, and I slowly nodded my head.
I will, I promised myself, not feeling like getting into any supernatural-related trouble today. Even though a feeling told me that, that wasn't going to happen.
My life is starting to look too much like all those books I read and love.
