σαράντα πέντε
Jimin's already grand army of dark phantoms had grown twice in size, and as he stood before them with crossed arms and a raised chin, Yoongi swore that if he squinted his eyes enough he could see the prince smirk.
Taehyung looked up at Yoongi, and the king of The Styx sighed deeply. "Alright... so we might not make it out of this alive."
Taehyung growled, and Yoongi chuckled. "Kidding, kidding," he said, pointing at Jimin's army with one eye screwed shut. "We'll most likely just become one of those black creatures over there..."
The king rolled his shoulders, deliberately poking fun at the situation to mask his fear. "Especially if that damn demigod doesn't show up..."
Taehyung growled at a low timbre, his impressive thick manes blowing wildly in the wind as he dug the long nails of his paws into the snow.
Yoongi raised his sword up to the pitch-black heavens as though he was declaring war upon Nyx herself. "Attack!" He yelled with his entire lungs capacity, kicking his horse and bravely galloping off into battle with Taehyung following closely behind.
The soldiers of both The Styx and Athens cried out and roared as they followed the king and the prince. Men on horses, on foot and with bow and arrow, running as fast as they could into the army of black.
Jimin screamed, and his army too blew right past him as they charged forward like one giant, menacing shadow. They seemed unstoppable, but Yoongi knew his men wouldn't back down, and the soldiers of Athens did not seem to be scared off either.
The army of the living and the army of the dead clashed like waves breaking onto pointed rocks and everything around the king turned to chaos in a matter of seconds. The orchestra of screaming men, swords clanging, and horses neighing was defeaning and soldiers perished left and right.
Every now and then, between the attacks of the dark phantoms, the king checked up on Taehyung, making sure the lion was still there in the crowd of soldiers. But the magnificent red animal was ferociously tearing phantoms apart, scaring even his own soldiers with how violently he fought.
When the king came face to face with the dark knights, he wasn't entirely sure if there were eyes hidden behind those black masks, or if all humanity, all life had been stripped of them completely. But he knew in that moment that it was either him or them, so he fought with everything he had and roared like the lion at his side.
Sweat pooled on the king's forehead, blood splatters blinding him and coloring his battle-attire in crimson.
"Where the fuck is the demigod!" Yoongi screamed, fighting off demons though he could see his army grow thinner. "The entire plan got screwed because of Namjoon, we need him right now!"
"Need who?"
Yoongi yelped, stumbling backwards and nearly falling over the body of a dead soldier when the prince of darkness, was suddenly standing right before him.
He too, was covered in blood, smiling broadly with the most satisfied look in his eyes. It was then that Yoongi realised his old friend was far beyond saving, and he gripped tightly around the handle of his sword, pointing it's sharp end at the prince.
"I don't want to kill you Jimin!" the king bellowed. "But you leave me no choice!"
Jimin rolled his eyes with a cheeky smile. "Oh Yoongi, did you really always believe you were the best Warrior in the Seven Kingdoms?"
Yoongi gulped, seeing his hands tremble when the prince before him began to melt like a dying candle. He was dissolving, his face sliding away, his body losing it's form, and turning into black tar.
Yoongi tried to keep breathing in and out, his eyes darting left and right as he tried to pinpoint where exactly the prince had gone. Until the king felt a soft breath against the back of his neck that sent goosebumbs to spread along his skin.
"The demigod wasn't the only one who I went easy on..." the prince whispered like a frosty breeze, appearing right behind the king as though he'd never lost his human form.
"Jimin..." Yoongi breathed, slowly turning his head, before crying out in agony when the prince shoved his dagger through his back in one single jab.
A loud roar traveled across the battlegrounds as Taehyung had seen the prince stab the king in the back from a few feet away and raced to his side. He jumped through the battle, diving under and over soldiers with no regard for anyone's wellbeing.
"Fucking... wanker..." Yoongi groaned, falling to his knees as he pressed his hand to the bleeding hole in his stomach.
Jimin stepped back to look at what he'd done, seeming taken aback by his own action for a good five seconds, before he was violently shoved to the ground by Taehyung's lion form lunging at him.
The huge red lion roared in Jimin's face, a tear streaming down it's snout and his human-like eyes filled with sadness.
"Tae..." Jimin whispered, holding his hands out in front of him as he lay on his back in the snow.
But the red lion was less merciful than the prince of Athens. It opened it's wide jaws and attacked, setting it's teeth into the prince and ripping him apart with a ferocious appetite for revenge. He bit and tore, chewed and spat, devoured until the prince's face was nothing but a shredded pile of black clay.
But then, the prince dissolved again, and Taehyung crinkled his nose, looking down at Jimin's body as it melted away, only to come into full existence again a few feet away.
He was unharmed. His skin pale with not a single scratch on it's surface.
The prince held out his hands, looking at them as though even he himself couldn't believe he had just survived the savage lion-attack.
Taehyung looked desperate, baring his teeth with a growl one last time, before his angered spirit seemed to deflate. The fur on his body began to pull away, his arms and legs shrunk, and he turned back to his human form as he crawled over to Yoongi's body.
"No!" He screamed, tears streaming down his flushed cheeks as he cupped the king's pale face.
Yoongi's eyelids lay heavy, and he fought to keep looking at the prince while the large wound in his gut doused his attire in crimson blood. "Shit..." he chuckled, coughing as a pool of blood gathered in his mouth.
"Don't laugh you fool!" Taehyung yelled, frantically trying to stop the king's bleeding by pressing his hands against the wound. But the king reached out and placed his hand against Taehyung's face, dragging the redhead's attention away from his injury.
"Atleast..." he murmured, looking deep into the prince's eyes with a drunken smile. "Atleast I did right by you, in the end."
"N-no!" Taehyung sobbed, shaking his head and tugging at the king's armor when the man dropped his hand and closed his eyes. "It's not the end! I won't let it be!"
"His soul will travel back to his home now," a frighteningly calm voice spoke up, cutting through the loud, frosty wind. "The Styx is where he belongs anyway... and it isn't as though the two of you had a futu-"
Taehyung screamed, his cry slicing straight through Jimin's words as though his heart had been cut out of his body. He was inconsolable, chanting 'no' repeatedly as though reality could be denied if he truly wished it so. He threw himself over Yoongi's body, burying his face in the king's chest as all life seemed to be drained from his own self as well.
Jimin found it odd. Why was he not attacking him to get revenge? Why was he not angry? Why was he just... crying, when he was capable of so much more?
The ravenhaired prince looked around at his army, and how it had grown exponentially as it had eaten away at the army of Athens and the Styx. Almost all of them belonged to him now. Almost all of them were dark demons of the night that sauntered across the snow-covered battleground, looking for more life to conquer.
"JIMIN!" A voice roared, and it echoed through the field at a piercing volume.
Jimin looked up at the dark sky and the grey clouds that drifted past like the dark phantoms on the ground.
"Sunshine?" He whispered. "Is that you?"
A flash of light traveled through the heavens, and within the blink of an eye, none other than the demigod came down from above and landed on the ground with an impact that made the earth tremble.
Bright glowing eyes pierced through the fog, and the Jungkook's herculean silhouette came into view as he slowly stood up.
Dark phantoms ran up to the demigod like flies drawn to a light, but with a single ball of light the deity evaporated the demons and burned them to a crisp like it was nothing.
He walked toward the prince of darkness with determined footsteps, the snow sizzling beneath his feet and the dark demons perishing one by one from the light he exuded alone.
"I knew you'd come back," Jimin said, fluttering his pitch-black eyes with a gentle smile.
Jungkook wore a deep frown, his fists balled tightly with a menacing march.
"J-Jungkook..." Taehyung sniveled, dead eyes looking up at the tall demigod.
Jungkook said nothing, and only crouched down in the snow next to the redheaded prince.
He placed his hand on Yoongi's stomach, closed his eyes, and a bunch of glitters and shimmers began to gather around the fallen king as the demigod healed him.
Taehyung brought his fingers to his quivering lips, watching the scene with bulging eyes.
"Come on old guy," the demigod murmured fondly. "It's not your turn to leave this damned world just yet..."
The king's eyes shot open and he jolted upright as he was brought back from the brink of death. He gasped for air and grabbed to his chest as though the beating of his own heart was a shock too great to handle.
With a yelp the prince of Athens threw himself into the king's arms, too overwhelmed to speak but not to cry. He buried his face in the crook of Yoongi's neck, sobbing out of happiness and pressing sloppy pecks against his skin. "I love you!" He cried, "how dare you leave me!"
Jungkook stared at the two with a content smile, pulling his tunic over his head, and draping the old rag over the naked body of the prince of Athens.
He stood up again, turning around to face Jimin, who was nibbling his bottom lip with a slightly nervous expression.
"It's war," the prince said quickly, folding his arms in a petulant manner. "People are supposed to die."
Jungkook hummed, calmly strolling toward the prince. "Even friends?"
"Anyone," Jimin said with a gulp as he began to back up. "Everyone."
Jungkook did not slow his pace and kept his glowing eyes set on Jimin's black ones. "I guess that makes sense," he said. "But if we're doing this, I'd prefer it if we keep them alive."
"Jungkook no!" Taehyung yelled, but the demigod ignored the redhead's plea.
"D-doing what?" Jimin asked, his brows twitching into a frown as he took another step back.
"Ruling the world together ofcourse," Jungkook chuckled. "As we agreed."
Jimin looked up through his lashes, remembering te vivid dreams his mother had given him to warn him for this exact moment. "I can't trust you, Sunshine. You fight for them."
"I don't," Jungkook said. "I thought I had to... I thought I was supposed to, but you Jimin, you have shown me that I can make my own descisions. Right and wrong are dead to me, remember?"
Jimin shook his head, taking another small step back. "You're lying. What about your brother? You still cling to his teachings."
Jungkook edged up the corner of his lips. "I used to, yes, but I no longer feel his burdening view of the world on my shoulders. He came to me in a dream Jimin, and I told him of you, and of how amazing you make me feel. He told me he wanted me to be happy..."
"But..."
"I took some time to think," Jungkook went on. "And I realised that there is nothing here for me on this world, Jimin. Without you, there's nothing I care about. Before this mess, I wanted nothing more than to disappear, to live in the forest with my brother, isolated from the rest of the world. Now, I just want to be the sun to your stars, Jimin. All I want is you, because you make me feel infinite and I..."
Jimin stopped backing up, and allowed Jungkook to cross the distance between them. "I love you."
The prince looked up at the demigod, their chests brushing and their fingers tangling together. "My mother told me I'm supposed to choose between power and love," he said quietly. "She says I can't have both..."
"Well, I think she's wrong," Jungkook murmured. "Because you and I are one, and we belong together."
"Do you truly think so?" Jimin asked, letting his eyes turn back to their more human state, and revealing that they were filled to the brim with insecurity.
Jungkook's eyes as well, turned back to their warm oakbrown color, and he nodded, leaning in to connect his forehead with Jimin's. "Your Royal Tinyness..." he chuckled. "You are perfect like this."
Jimin's shoulders shook with a small giggle, and for a moment, it seemed like the entire world disappeared and only the prince and the demigod mattered. The army of dark knights battling the few leftover soldiers, Taehyung screaming at Jungkook to choose a different path, the lanterns at the borders of the battlefield, going out one by one and casting them into a deeper darkness. None of it was important.
"This is all I ever wanted Jungkook," Jimin whispered, wrapping his arms around Jungkook's neck and nudging his face against the deity's chest. The starry night embraced the sun in that moment, as it had fallen in love with it's blinding light, it's greatness and it's power. And the sun itself, it was besotted, entranced with the night's beauty, it's sadness, it's precariousness. Intertwined together there was a balance, a perfect image that could not be replicated, and the night cried softly, for the pain of it's existence seemed to vanish in the arms of the sun. And the sun smiled broadly, for there felt nothing better than being held by the stars.
"You promised to never hurt me," Jimin whispered against Jungkook's ear.
Jungkook's arms settled around the prince's frail body, and he pressed it closer against his broad chest where it belonged. "I did."
"But Jungkook," Jimin choked out, his hands gripping tightly at the demigod's back one last time, before sliding down along his waist. "We're fighting..."
The demigod bit into his quivering lower lip, tangling one of his hands in the prince's wild raven locks. "I know," he he said with a sharp inhale, desperately looking up at the dark heavens.
"And this- this is war," the prince said, his voice soft and squeaky as he grew frantic in the demigod's arms.
Jungkook clenched his jaw, silent tears streaming down his face. "I love you," he whispered softly, screwing his eyes shut before bringing his hand to his arrows, taking one of them, and piercing Jimin's back with one swift, deep thrust.
Jimin whimpered, and the demigod's lips parted when a flash of pain coursed through him, feeling blood ooze out of his body as his heart was put to an abrupt stop.
"I f-figured out how to k-kill you in the end Jungkook," Jimin cried softly, taking quick breaths as he clung to Jungkook with trembling hands. The prince's human body began to decay in the arms of the demigod, and he felt himself grow weaker as life flowed out of him. "S-stopping your heart... i-it was as simple as t-that."
Jungkook's eyes slipped shut and he caged the prince in his arms as the two of them collapsed simeoultaneously, their bodies falling limply in the snow. "Jin..." The demigod wheezed, his tan skin turning to a pale, sickly shade of grey. "He g-gave me the a-arrows in my d-dream."
Jimin cuddled up closer to the demigod and released a shuddering breath, one of his arms and both his legs already turning to clay as death was nearing. The top of his head brushed the demigod's chin, and he curled what was left of him into the deity, holding on to the boy's fading warmth. "J-Jungkook," he stuttered, reaching out his only hand to touch the demigod's face with blackened fingertips. "T-thank you," he whispered, tracing the outline of the boy's nose, down to his nose and chin. "F-for loving me..."
Jungkook looked down at the prince with eyes that twinkled with tears despite his bleeding heart, and on his face spread one last, grand smile, his charming bunny teeth making a quick appearance as his eyes crinkled with fondness. "Thank you..." he said in a hushed tone, doing his very best to articulate his words even though he could already feel the Morai struggle to cut his thicker life-thread. "F-for being m-my f-friend."
A single tear fell down Jimin's cheek, and as the rest of his body turned black, becoming dark and lifeless like the dirt beneath the snow, the light in the demigod's eyes faded as well, until there was no longer a soul behind his glassy brown doe eyes.
Taehyung had been holding the king of The Styx cradled in his arms, and looked around with tears in his eyes as the army of dark knights simply evaporated one by one, their dark forms disintegrating and turning to dust.
The prince crawled through the snow on his hands and knees, sobbing as he went over to the demigod's body, and wailed by the pool of black tar next to the deity, as it was all that was left of the ravenhaired prince.
Yoongi came to Taehyung's side and held the prince, shedding his tears as well, for the good friend they both once loved, and the wonderful one they had only just gained.
Suddenly, amidst the turmoil and distress, the demigod's body began to rise from the cold earth. It floated up and up into the dark sky, getting further away until it was nothing but a small dot.
Taehyung and Yoongi stared up with parted lips, holding each other's hands with confused looks, until a loud boon made them both whimper and hide in each other's arms.
The defeaning, explosive sound dramatically echoed across the battlefield, across the world, and a bright white light blazed in the sky like a giant star.
Taehyung and Yoongi closed their eyes to hide from whatever was about to happen, prepared to die in each other's arms as their friends had done, but someone's loud, incoherent screams perked both their curiosities and slowly, they opened their eyes.
The royals looked up, only to cover their mouths in shock at what they saw.
A bright blue azure sky, made the two of them squint their eyes like a newborn, The sun, it was shining fiercely high up in the heavens, burning like a thousand candles.
"Y-yoongi..." Taehyung breathed in awe, doing his best to perceive the sun no matter the strain on his eyes.
"The ass-ling..." the king said with a wide smile, wiping his tears and chuckling in disbelief. "Did he just turn into the fucking sun?"
Taeyung looked at the king with widened eyes. "They are together now, aren't they? In the river of The Styx? Their souls... they are united?"
Yoongi sniffed and pushed Taehyung's head against his chest, sighing deeply as he looked around at the surviving soldiers, who were sitting stunned on the battlefield as well. "If they are able to find each other, yes. But there are millions of souls in that bloody river..."
"Do you think they'll be able to?" Taehyung asked softly, wrapping his arms around Yoongi's waist.
Yoongi smirked, nodding at the melting snow. "Every morning and every evening, my love," he said.
"Those fools will chase each other for eternity..."
