Third POV
The people of Hastinapur had been eagerly waiting for this day. And just as eager were the people of the palace. And why should not they be?
The Yuvraj of their country was being declared. Their current King would announce who will be the next person in line to descend the throne.
Everybody was questioning amongst themselves as to who it would be. The recent change of events, changed the scenario a lot. But the same question as before remained. Who will be the Yuvraj? Yudhishthira or Duryodhana?
Son of their previous emperor, who also happens to be older or son of the current emperor?
"Maharaj Dhritarashtra Padhar rahein Hain." (Maharaj Dhritarashtra is arriving in the court!) Said the guard. Once everybody was settled. Maharaj gestured Maha Mantri to start.
"Aaj ke din ka sabhi ko behad intezar tha." (Everybody has been eagerly waiting for this day.) Maha Mantri begins. "Maharaj ke nirnaye ka hum sabko intezar hai." (All of us have been waiting for his highness's decision.)
"Par Maharaj" (But my king-) Maha Mantri looks at his brother.
"Aap Yuvraj ka ghoshana karein, Maha Mahim Bishma ko sare Raj kumaroan ko Ashirwad dena chahhiye." (Before you declare the next king, Maha Mahim Bishma must bless the princes.) Maha Mantri says. "Agar aap kahein toh" (If you allow then.)
"Awashya. Tat shree, Raj Kumaroan se baat karna chahhiye Hain." (Of course. Tat shree should talk to the Princes.) Maharaj declares.
Shakuni, Dushassan scoff at what Maharaj declared.
Maha Mahim Bishma stands up to speak. "Hastinapur, aaj yeh din ek nayi shurvat laya hai. Aur is shurvat ke saath Khushi, pragati sab saath aayi hai. Har nayi shurvat se pehle, insaan ek bar pinche mur kar sarror sochta hai." (Hastinapur, today this day had brought forth a new beginning. And with this beginning, happiness, success all have come together. Before every new beginning, one must look back once for sure.)
"Aaj, Mujhe mere bita kal dikh raha hai. Ek aisa samay that jab mere yeh bache Dhritarashtra, Pandu, Vidor mere saath samay bita Rahe the." (Today, I am able to see my past. There was once a time, these kids of mine Dhritarashtra, Pandu, Vidor were spending time with me.) Maha Mahim says, as Maharaj and Maha Mantri both smile, reminiscing.
"Subh ki baat hai, tino raj kumar ek vichitra khel khel Rahe the. Jahan Pandu aur Vidor, ek unchi daali par chade. Aapne Jyeshta ko bulaya aur pure vishwas ke saath, kud Gaye." (The story is of one morning, when the three Princes were playing a strange game. Where in, Pandu and Vidor were on a top branh of the tree. Pandu called for his eldest brother and with full confidence, jumped of the branch.) Maha Mahim continues. Both the brothers were being greatly affected by the story.
"Utne hi vishwas ke saath, Dhritarashtra un tak bhaga aur aapne dono bhai ko aapne haath Mein pakad liya. Unhe girne nahi Diya."
"Yeh dekh kar, Maine bahut ghabra Gaya. Toh Maine tino ko roka aur Pandu ko ek kone Mein le Gaya. Main usse puch, 'Yeh konsa khel hai, Putra? Agar tum gir jaate toh bahut chot aati.' Pandu Mujhe has kar kehta hai, 'Tat shree mere Jyeshta the na wahan. Woh Mujhe girne nahi dete.'" (Seeing it, I was worried. I stopped the three brothers and took Pandu to a corner. I asked him, 'What kind of game is this, son? If you had fallen you could have been hurt a lot.' Pandu smiled at me and said, 'Uncle, my elder brother was there, right? He would not let me fall.') Maha Mahim continues.
"Sun kar Maine kaha, 'par Pandu, tumhare Jyeshta toh tumhe srif sun saktein Hain. Dekh nahi sakte.'" (After listening to him, I said, 'But Pandu, your elder brother can only hear you. He cannot see you.') Almost everyone in court was tearing up.
"Us par Pandu ka jawab tha ki uske Jyeshta ko ankhe nahi chahhiye usse dekhe ko, unka pyaar kafi hai.'" (On that Pandu answered to me that his elder brother doesn't need his eyes to see him. The love his brother has for him is enough.) Maharaj closes his eyes as tears well up in his eyes.
"Us din mere bachoan ne Mujhe ek nayi sikh di. Sikh pyaar aur vishwas ki." (That day, my students gave me a new lesson. A lesson of love and trust.) Maha Mahim says, tearing up.
"Aap jaante Hain Maharaj, jab Pandu ke saamne Yam raj kade honge toh Pandu ko kou chinta nahi hogi. Kyunki usse yeh vishwas hai ki uske Jyeshta Hain, aur woh sab chej pakad lenge." (Do you know your highness, when Pandu would have stood in front Yam raj, he would have had no worries. Because he would have this trust in you that his Jyeshta is there, he will catch everything in his arms.)
"Maharaj tab aur ab, sab samay aapke anuj ko aap par pura vishwas tha. Aur srif aap Mein hi tha. Ab main aur kuch nahi kahunga, Maharaj. Is samay meri yahi prathana hai ki bhagwan aapke saath hon, aur yahi mera Ashirwad hai." (King, then and now, at all these times your younger brother had full confidence on you. And only in you. I will not say anything else. King, at this point of time I will pray that the lord above is with you, and this, this is what is my blessing.)
"Aaj main ek bahut badi duvidha main Hun. Par Tat shree ki baat sun kar, Mujhe mera jawab mil Gaya." (Today, I stand at a very difficult place. But uncle's advice has given me my answer.) Maharaj began. "Har raja ko dharma ka palan karna awashyak hota hai. Is liye aaj." (For every king, it is his duty to up- hold dharma. That is why today.)
"Main, Maharaj Dhritarashtra yeh ghoshana karta Hun ki Hastinapur ka Yuvraj, Pandu Putra Yudhishthira hai." (I, King Dhritarashtra, declares that Hastinapur's Yuvraj is Pandu Putra Yudhishthira.) Maharaj Dhritarashtra declares and everybody in court cheers.
What made everyone smile was the warm hug that was shared between Yudhishthira and Duryodhana, along with the others.
May be the future of Hastinapur wouldn't be so dark, now.
*******
"Ang- Raj!"
"Ang- Raj!"
Ananya had been searching for Karn since a while now. But she couldn't find him. Where had he gone so abruptly, and why wasn't she informed?
Suddenly, a hand caught her waist and she was pulled flush against a body. Behind a curtain in a dark corner
"Koi shikayat nahi hai?" (No complains, huh?)
"Aapke ek sparsh se main pehchan leti Hun. Fir koi shikayat Kyun rahegi?" (I can recognize you from one touch. Why will I complain?)
"Achcha?" (Really?) Karn questioned as he turned Ananya towards him.
"Aur nahi toh Kya?" (What else?) Ananya raised an eyebrow and the reply she got were kisses.
"Humme koi dekh lega, Karn." (Somebody will see us, Karn.) Ananya moans out, somehow.
"Toh? Dikat Kya hai? Tum meri patni Ho, mera adhikar hai tum par." (So? Anything wrong? You are my wife; I have this right no you.) Karn replies sucking on Ananya's pulse point.
"Haan, par-" (Yes, but-) Ananya tries to speak but Karn pulls her in a kiss.
"Karn!" Ananya shrieks pulling away from him.
"What?" Karn pouts.
"Hastinaup se patra aaya hai!" (There is a letter from Hastinapur) Ananya blurts out. You never know when the thoughts go haywire, right?
"Kis baat ka?" (For what?)
"Yudi, Hastinapur ka Yuvraj ban Gaya hai." (Yudi, has been declared the next to be king of Hastinapur.) Ananya says smiling widely.
"Wah! Bahut achhi khabar hai." (Wow! That is a great news.) Karn smiles.
'She looks like a proud mother smiling like this.' Karn thinks to himself.
"Hum ja toh nahi payenge, issi karan kuch saman bhejwa rahin Hun, aapko kuch bhejwana hai?" (We will not be able to go, so I am sending some things. Do you want to send something?) Ananya questions.
"Dekhtein Hain, chalo." (We will see, come.) Karn puts a hand on Ananya's small back and together they go off to wish their younger brother using gifts.
