Friendship
Right when the cable car is full, it starts. "I hope this was the right thing to do," Sam says, making everyone's heads turn towards her.
"What?" Chris says.
"You know, getting everyone back together on the anniversary. I mean, Josh seemed really pumped about us all doing something, didn't he?" Sam says, making Kali's head turn towards the window, looking out of it, which Val notices.
"I haven't seen him so excited about something in forever." Chris says.
"It's kind of hard to tell. Shouldn't we be worried though?" Sam says.
"No, no, it was definitely a good idea, right Kali?" Chris says, hitting her shoulder, but she ignores it.
"But everyone is here, so it definitely is," Chris exclaims.
"Thanks, bro. Good talk," Sam says, pushing Chris's shoulder, making everyone laugh a little.
"You know, let's just skip past that and actually enjoy the trip—it's a break from everything," Chris says, noticing the tension in the car.
"Maybe you're actually right," Val says.
"You guys know how Josh and I met?" Chris asks Sam and Val.
"No?" both of the girls say.
"Oh god, I hate yet love this story," Kali says, turning away from the window to face them.
"Ok, third grade. Josh sat in the back of the room, I sat in the front. We didn't even know each other existed, but the kid sitting next to Josh started strap-snapping the training bra on the girl in front of him, so the teacher made him move to the front—where I was sitting!" Chris explains.
"Okay, so?" Sam says.
"So I got moved to the back!" Chris exclaims.
"Okay, and?" Val says.
"And next to Josh! That's how we met! And became friends. To this day." Chris exclaims once more.
"A match made in heaven," Sam jokes.
"If it weren't for the fact that Jeanie Simmons hit puberty like three years early and on that day decided to wear a low-cut shirt that showed off her training bra—I mean, who knows? We wouldn't know any of each other," Chris says.
"We would have different friend groups, not knowing each other and not having possibly one of our best nights. Boom—butterfly effect!" Chris says, moving his hand like a motivational speaker.
"Okay, that is not true. That was not a butterfly effect—it was just a coincidence," Kali brings down the theory.
"So, was it coincidence when you two met?" Chris says, making Kali shake her head.
"Wait, how did you guys meet?" Sam asks Kali.
"Yeah, big sis, how did you guys meet?" Val says with a teasing smile.
"I'm not saying," Kali says, shaking her head with a guilty smile.
"I remember, it was freshman year, when Kali used to wear cartoon tees and never really talked to anyone but Val. But now that's Val's thing," Chris says, making Val giggle.
"Hey! It was freshman year—it was a weird year for everyone," Kali says.
"Well, we had the same class together and we all had partners to work with, but on the third day, we all got treated for actually doing the project better than last time," Chris says.
"The teacher was actually a nice old lady who liked us, so she bought some snacks—and when I mean snacks, I mean Pop-Tarts, 'cause that's all anyone got that day," Chris says, making Val oh as she remembers that day.
"And somehow everyone but those two didn't get the chance to get it," Chris says.
"Somebody pushed me out of the way to get some," Kali explains, making Sam laugh.
"Pop-Tarts? Who would push some random person out of the way for it?" Sam says.
"And why would you let them?" Val says, who seems a little shocked.
"It was freshman year, I let a lot of stuff slide," Kali says, smiling to herself.
"Clearly, since everyone was sick the next day because of it, including me and Val. And only Josh and Kali were there in class that day. Since we trusted our teacher who was a cat lover," Chris says, making the girls' faces look in disgust as something probably wasn't good with the Pop-Tarts.
"So everyone had to switch partners, Josh and Kali were forced to work together that day," Chris says.
"You're being dramatic," Kali says.
"And then, after the project, the two started to talk a lot where they were clearly flirting and then boom—they started dating!" Chris says.
"How do you remember this?" Kali questions.
"I just remember everything like a boss!" Chris exclaims, making Kali roll her eyes playfully.
"Or you're a complete nerd," Kali says.
"If that didn't happen, we wouldn't have met Val or Kali. You wouldn't have been dating Matt, and maybe Josh would be crushing over Sam," Chris says.
"Okay... sure?" Sam says.
"Boom! Butterfly effect," Chris says.
After a while, "Jess!" The group yells out as they wait for her to open the door as they made it out of the cable car, knocking and making her jump back.
"Are you guys having a really weird stroke?" Jess asks.
"We're stuck in this stupid thing," Chris says.
"Can you pretty please let us out?" Val asks.
Jess turns to the buttons and presses the one to open the door, allowing Chris to open it for everyone as they walk out.
"Oh. My. God. I actually thought we were goners. Another ten minutes in there and I would have chewed off my own leg," Chris says, making the girls gag in disgust.
"Sick, Chris," Sam says.
"I just got a bunch of meat and muscle on my bones everywhere," Chris says.
"Sureee..." Kali says, but then out of nowhere he snatches a note Jess was holding.
"Hey!"
"Well, well, well. What do we have here?" Chris says, as Jess tries to get the note back.
"My goodness. Seems that someone has a little crush on our good friend and dear class president, Michael Munroe," Chris says, waving it around.
"Oh, how the tables have turned," Val mumbles, remembering how the night even got started.
"What kind of sizzling erotica note might our Jessica might be capable of writing. I must wonder." Chris says.
"Well, I'm with Mike, so it's my business." Jess snatches back the note.
"Of course you are." Kali snaps back, making Jess glare at her.
"You shouldn't be talking," Jess says, making Kali a bit confused.
"Come on, Jess, it's nothing to hide," Sam points out.
"Yeah," Chris says.
"Well, you heard—no more telling. I've got no secrets that I'm keeping," Jess says.
"Maybe we should head up to the lodge already. I'm getting tired of just imagining Jess and Mike's erotic night for tonight," Kali jokes, making everyone but Jess laugh.
"You guys can go ahead, not that I want to go with all of you. But I'm just going to wait here to see who else is coming," Jess says, sitting back down, making Sam and Val mutter Mike's name.
"What?" Jess asks, hearing the name.
"I mean, you know they're waiting for me, so yeah," Jess says, walking away.
"You ready?" Val asks, walking beside Kali.
"No, but if you are, I am too," Kali says, making both girls smile.
