Chapter one | Peppermint

Haneul's P.O.V

December 21st, 2018

"Haneul, do you have all your clothes packed?" Papa asked me as he walked into my bedroom just as I finished zipping up my suitcase that was full of my clothes.
"Yep!" I proudly answered, pointing to the sky blue suitcase covered with the little BT21 character, Mang. "I packed it all on my own, Papa, just like a big boy!"
"I'm proud of you, my little dancer, you're getting so big!" He gushed. "And you packed everything in your Mang suitcase, that's adorable!" He added before attacking my chubby cheeks with kisses. I giggled, a goofy grin forming on my face as he gently kissed my cheeks.
"Okay, Kiddo, your mother's waiting." He stated, stepping away from me and gently ruffling my hair before grabbing my suitcase by its handle. "We better get going or she'll be upset... again." He dragged it behind him as he walked out of my pastel blue room that was decorated with superheroes posters and BT21 stuffed animals.
"Papa, wait for Haneul!" I called out, a heart-shaped smile spreading across my face as I ran after him down
"Hurry up, Silly!" Papa teased as he stood at the end of the bright hallway, watching me run towards him.

"Where is he? I have places to be." A cold, familiar voice asked, killing the cheery atmosphere that had once surrounded the apartment. "You know I hate waiting."
"He's coming, calm down," Papa stated. His cheery tone completely gone only to be replaced with a tone of pure annoyance.
"Well, he better be or I'm leaving." The cold, feminine voice hissed. "I have better things to do, then, wait around for a six-year-old." I filched at her harsh tone, but I quickly regained myself and ran towards her.
"Mummy!" I beamed as wrapped my arms around her waist. Her dull brown eyes lit up with a tint of joy, but it quickly vanished.
"Hello, Sweetie." She spoke through gritted teeth as she wrapped her arms around my small waist, patting my back lightly. "How's my baby boy?" She forced a smile onto her face as she pulled away from our hug.
"I'm doing great!" I replied as memories of yesterday freshly ran through my head. "Papa and I went to a BT21 shop, a few days ago. It was so cool, I got a Mang suitcase and two headbands; one was of Chimmy and the other was of TaTa!" She nodded, pretending to pay attention, but I knew she wasn't, even though, I still continued to ramble on.
"That sounds nice, Sweetie." She muttered, staring at her painted nails. I softly sighed, turning towards Papa and hoped he would join the conversation, but all he did was lightly shake his head. He knew she wasn't paying attention, she never did.

I glanced at the fully decorated Christmas tree that we had set up in the living room, last week. I was a hassle to decorate, but we had fun, nonetheless.
"I slipped your headband into your suitcase earlier." He assured me, running a hand through his orange hair. "Don't worry." I lightly nodded, turning my attention back to Mummy.
"Mummy, what did you do this week?" I asked, my sudden question caused her to look down at me with her dull, brown eyes.
"I worked all week." She simply replied, staring down at me. "My job isn't that exciting. All I do is paperwork."
"What is your job? You've never told me about it..." I stated, pondering all the cool things she could possibly be.
"I'm a secretary for Lee Hye, the owner of a huge weapons company in the city." She responded, her voice monotone as spoke.
"I have to get going." Papa suddenly remarked, gaining our attention. "My plane takes off soon, so I have to grab my stuff. But before I go, Haneul, I want hugs and kisses." I nodded as I turned away from Mummy. His eyes held pain as he glanced over at her. It still hurts him, I remember how deeply it had hurt him. He's cried over it many times, but I know he's still getting over it. It didn't matter if it was six years ago, it still hurt him to ponder about.

I ran over to him as he bent down onto his knees. His arms were wide open of me, which caused me to cheekily grin before I tackled him in a bearhug.
"Oh, you're getting so strong!" He exclaimed, regaining his stance before he fell backward.
"I'm a big boy now!" I responded as he held me securely in his arms.
"I've been letting you hang out with Jungkook too much!" He laughed, ruffling my dark brown hair as he let go of me. "Do I get kisses or are you too big now?" He added, teasing as he let go of me and bent down to my height.
"No, I'll always give kisses and hugs to Papa!" I objected, gently pecking both of his honey-toned cheeks as a wide smile spread across his face, showing off his dimples. "No matter how old I get!"
"That's what I like to hear." He remarked, a soft smile still on his face as he gazed down at me.

"I'm going to miss you, Papa," I whispered, hoping she wouldn't hear me. I looked into his caramel brown eyes that were exactly like mine; they were filled with guilt. He nodded, his smile falling into a deep frown.
"I'll miss you too, my little dancer. But don't worry, I'll be back soon." He reassured me, lightly kissing my cheeks, one last time.
"You'll be back before Christmas Eve, right?" I asked, fiddling with the sleeve of my pink cardigan "I don't want you to miss out on Uncle Seokjin's cookies...."
"I'll be back in two or three days, I won't miss Christmas." He explained, sticking out his pinky for me. "I pinky promise." I wrapped my much smaller pinky around his, sealing our promise. It was our little thing we always did before he went away on his long trips. He would pinky promise that he would come back to me and I would promise to be good while he was away.
"Come on, hurry up with this sickeningly sweet goodbye." Mummy snapped, glaring over at us. I sighed, I didn't want to her to be angrier at me, it wouldn't be good for me. I waved goodbye to Papa, earning a small wave back as I ran over to Mummy.

She looked at Papa, glaring at him intently.
"You better be back soon." She hissed, pointing a finger at me. "I don't want this thing for too long."
"Haneul is not a thing, Gi. He's our son and you need to spend more time with him." Papa coldly stayed, his eyes glaring into hers. "It's either that or I take him to my sister who's more like his real mother than you are." He smirked, sending her a cheeky smile.
She scoffed at him, crossing her arms.
"I am capable of handling a child for three days." She objected, stared up at him. "I carried him in my womb for nine months."
"You just contradicted yourself, Gi." He chuckled, setting my suitcase down next to me.
"Whatever!" She growled, forcefully grabbing my hand and my suitcase. She dragged me walked towards the front door before taking a small glance back at him, her eyes filled with pure rage as she continued to grip my hand.
"Gi, be gentle with him! He's not an old rag doll, he's a human being!" Papa called out as he watched us walk away. "I don't want to see a single mark on his skin when I come back."
"Whatever." She muttered under her breath as I turned my head to look at Papa, once more. I frowned, seeing the frown deepening on his face.
'I wish I didn't have to leave.' I thought, not wanting to leave the brightly decorated apartment that always held a special warmth, affection, and love in it. 'I wish Papa didn't have to go...'
Mummy opened the front door, eagerly pushing me out of the apartment before harshly slamming the door behind her. She exhaled, taking a few seconds to breathe in and out.
"I hate it in there. It smells just like him." She angrily mumbled, grabbing my hand, once again, as we began to walk down the long second-floor hallway. "Somehow, he still smells like peppermint or vanilla..."
