3. angel's secret ⌲ criminal minds
Derek Morgan has a daughter named Angelica. Who is sixteen years old, along with Spencer's daughter Sydney. Sydney is a carbon copy of her father, Spencer. She is too smart for her own good, as she is best friends with Angelica. They had always went to the same schools just so they wouldn't get separated, and so they could at least know someone at school, when it came time for the new year at school.
Angel and Syd both have dreams of wanting to be like their respective parents at the BAU, they're both at the top of their classes with straight, A's in all of their classes. Well mainly for Sydney that is. Angel on the other hand, she has a couple A's, B's, and C's.
The two made a vow when they were eight that they wouldn't keep secrets between the two, and right now, Angel has broken that vow. Hence why she hasn't told Syd, she wouldn't date tell her in the first place. Let alone anyone at the BAU.
What broke Angel out of her thoughts was someone tapping on her shoulder. She shot up quickly as possible and she turned to Sydney. "You good?" Sydney asked her friend as she grabs Angel's backpack, and the two walked out of the library where they have been studying for the past two hours. That and also because it's quieter for them to concentrate. Well, for Angel that is. Sydney can work almost everywhere, and concentrate and focus on her school work.
"Yeah, just tired." Angel says as Sydney was wart of that answer, but doesn't want to push her if she doesn't want to. She doesn't want to be that friend that is always pushing the other friend to always talk about their emotions as Angel isn't that kind of person to willingly talk about her emotions. You have to almost interrogate and profile her in order for her to talk without lying about it.
"Your dad is picking us up, hence why we're leaving. That and they got done with the case early." Sydney says as Angel nods her head as they see the truck pulling up. Sydney waves like a manic, which made Derek do the same to her, when he came to a stop.
Angel opened the back door and put her bag in and got into the back. Sydney sat in the front seat. Derek noticed the absence of his daughter's voice, as it was weird because she'd typically say hi or something, but today not a single peep.
Because what he doesn't know is that she is failing a class, Geometry. As her grade is nearly an F. Neither Syd or Derek knows about it either. Derek and Sydney share a look as they drive to the apartment where her and Spencer live as Spencer is on his way there actually.
To break the silence in the truck, Derek decides to break it. As he hates awkward silence but he loves quietness. "So, um, how was your girls' day today?" Derek asked as Syd nodded her head as a response.
"It was good." Sydney says as Derek nodded his head.
"How about you, Angel?" Derek asked his daughter who only shrugged her shoulders. Derek didn't want to question and or say anything knowing that probably she isn't in the mood to talk. Which does happen, rarely, though.
When they got to the apartment after Derek picked the girls up at the school. Angel wasted no time getting out and walking into the building. Derek pulled Sydney aside and to ask her what's wrong with Angel.
"What's wrong?" Derek asked as Syd shrugged her shoulders as even she doesn't know what is wrong with Angel.
"I don't know. She was fine earlier, but the her mood changed, and she's been like that." Syd says to Derek as said man furrowed his brows. "I'm not lying either, as she was talking up a storm and then after Geometry, she went mute."
"That was my next question." Derek says to the Reid daughter. "Come on, your pops should be home." Derek says as he locked the truck and him and Sydney walked into the main lobby and found Angel sitting in a chair with her face buried into her phone.
After dropping Sydney at the apartment, and talking with Spencer for a couple more minutes, Angel and Derek walked out of the apartment and headed to the truck. In the past fifteen minutes, Angel hasn't said anything which is unlike her in the slightest.
Angel got into the truck and sat where she did earlier. Which is weird because she would hop in the passenger seat. "You good, baby?" Derek asked his daughter as he looked through the mirror. He looked at her, as he hadn't gotten out of the parking lot for the apartment.
"Dad, please. Stop with the questions." Angel says as she looked out of the window, avoiding eye contact with her Dad. He sighed as he had started the truck knowing that she wasn't going to be talking about her emotions and or what is bothering her.
I got acall earlier, it was during the case actually after we had briefed with the officers." He says as she didn't say anything when he said that. "It was from your teacher." He continued talking as she hummed an answer. "Your Geometry teacher called." He added as he noticed that she froze when he said that. "You're failing Geometry, Angelica." He says as he doesn't always call her Angelica, it is always, Angel. "When were you going to tell me?" Derek had said to his daughter as she isn't one to keep secrets from her own dad either.
"I didn't know how, okay?" Angel says as she waved her hands in the air, as her voice cracked when she said that. She knew that eventually her dad would have found out that she was failing Geometry, but she was hoping that it would be later, versus sooner. It didn't work out like that, it is sooner, versus later.
"It isn't that hard, Angelica. All you had to do was tell me. I could have helped you." He says to his daughter, as he is using his 'dad' voice as he is keeping his gaze on his daughter as they haven't left the parking lot yet, despite him starting the truck already.
Angel rolled her eyes at her father which is another thing that she doesn't do much unless she is playfully rolling her eyes at him. But she isn't playfully doing it this time, as it's making Derek realize that something else is bothering her. Something deeper.
"It's not like you would understand." Angel says which made Derek furrow his eyebrows as this was concerning him a little bit. "It's not like I didn't want to tell you, I didn't know how to tell you." Angel says as her voice was cracking a little bit more.
Derek let her words sink in a little bit so that he more so understands what is wrong with his daughter. He is more of that parent that will ask questions and listening to his child, versus automatically jump to what is wrong with her. That is the advice that Spencer had given him when Angel got a little bit older, and after her mom died, from a car accident when she was six years old.
"What is wrong, tell me, please?" He asked her as it sounded more like he was begging her to tell him. He will do whatever it takes of him finding out what's wrong with his daughter.
Angel was going to think of a lie but when she saw the look her father was giving her to tell him what's wrong. She looked down to her lap, as the lights were on in the truck. She was thinking of how to word it so that even she would know what she is talking about.
"I um, went to see my counsellor today, during my free period, which is right after lunch and right before Geometry. I told her tat I have been failing Geometry. I told her why, which is because I don't understand it. Yes, I know I could have told you or Syd, or Reid, but I just didn't know how. You think it is easy trying to tell someone that, especially when you have anxiety as is. Anyway, she brought it to my attention that I may have ADHD, which means that I get overwhelmed easily or something. I wasn't paying attention to what else she was saying. She also said that it is in my best interest that I get it checked out to make sure that I have ADHD." Angel explains to her Dad as some of it came to a shock especially the first part of her saying that she's been failing Geometry.
How long has been failing it? Is what he wants to know. That is the important question. When she was done explaining he let the words process in his head, as before he said anything he nodded his head. "That is sorta what your teacher said, also. She said that you would shut down when you get overwhelmed, as it isn't uncommon for students to do that. She also suggested an IEP, which might help, as it will help your teachers of what is wrong." He says to his daughter, as she sighed knowing that she finally told him.
"The thing is, that is the only class that I am failing in, everything else is A's, B's, and C's." Angel says as she never really got a D and or an F, as it is new for her. She would at least try hard enough of getting a C, and seeing what happens. She is glad that her dad isn't one of those parents who are stingy about her grades. His only rule is: as long as she is trying and putting in the work then he wouldn't get involved. It is when she doesn't put in the work is when he will get involved. Especially now, since her Geometry teacher had called him and told him that Angel had been failing her Geometry class.
"How about this, I will take you out of school tomorrow, and we can go and get some tests done and see the results. How does that sound?" He asked her as she didn't waste anytime nodding her head at him. Like she was happy that she wasn't going to be in school tomorrow. She is always looking forward to the day where she would hear him say that she won't be at school. It made him chuckle of how fast her mood changed.
"Please. I don't want to deal with Geometry tomorrow." Angel says as he raised an eyebrow at his daughter, which meant that he was going to follow it up with a 'however'. Which is the worst thing to ever hear from a parent.
"However, me and you are gonna get your grade up, missy, after you get tested." Derek says as Angel's face instantly scrunched up at hearing that. That is definitely what she does not want to hear.
"Why couldn't you say that the first time?" Angel asked him as he motioned her to come up front. She left her bag where it was in the back seat, not even bothering to grab it with her. She climbed to the front seat, which she always does. Derek is used to it in the first place, of all the years of her doing that. Even before he got the truck. Basically since she started walking is when she started climbing to either the front seat or back seat.
"Because I didn't want to." He says to her which made her playfully roll her eyes followed by a shake of her head. When she got situated and buckled up as they are going to start heading to their house after this conversation. "If you need any help and or anything in general. What do you need to do?" He asked her which made her have a slight pout on her face when he said that. He gave her a look making her sigh.
"Ask for help." She grumbles to him which made him nod his head at her. "It is possibly the most easiest thing to do, trust me. No one is going to know you need help, unless you ask for it." He says to her, which made her nod her head at him.
