After another day of training with Y/n, Jake sat in front of his camera where he is supposed to do video logs in. It is becoming a bit hard to stay consistent but he tries to make it not sound awkward when he's in front of the camera for so long.

"Okay. This is video log 12. Time is 21:32" Jake started with a sigh but did not feel motivated to continue this process. He stopped and looked over at Grace who was looking at some samples under a microscope. "Do I have to do this now? Like I need to get some rack" Jake tried to request, but Grace shook her head at his question.

"No. Now, when it's fresh" She countered, still looking into the lens of the microscope. Jake sighed and turned back to the camera begrudgingly. "Okay. Location, shack. And the days are starting to blur together" He said to the camera, trying his best to remember the last few days while being with you.

He started to remember his lesson with you earlier that day. Y/n and Jake were sitting on a tree branch that connected two trees, and they were sitting cross-legged in front of one another, practicing Na'vi words.

"On'tu" Y/n said slowly for him, and Jake repeated it, almost perfectly. The word means nose. "On'tu" Jake repeated, and you nodded in approval.

The language is a pain, but, you know, I figure it's like field stripping a weapon. Repetition, repetition. Over and over.

Once Jake got a good idea of that specific word, they moved on to the next one, which is Nari and which means eye. Jake liked to see Y/n's eyes focusing on him while she taught him everything, and his heart fluttered whenever you congratulated him for getting something right, even after various attempts. But, even so, it didn't always go that way, and what Jake received was the opposite of that.

Y/n pointed to her eyes, then made Jake repeat the word, which Jake didn't mind continuing to look at; especially if that was the word they were learning.

"Navi" Jake said, all the while Y/n was pointing to her eyes, but you shook your head given that he pronounced it wrong. "Nari" Y/n said more clearly, to which Jake then tried to say again.

"Nari" Jake tried to say, but it still wasn't right, and Y/n was getting irritated and impatient. "Narrri," You said in a more enunciated tone.

"Narrri" Jake said, and once again, it was not quite right so Y/n raised her hand and smacked his head with a tired sigh. They repeated this same vocabulary over and over until it was time to move on to the next lesson.

What Jake needed to learn next was how to use a bow and arrow. The two now stood in the designated ranges for warriors to train in while Y/n gave Jake beginner tips. As he held the bow and arrow, Y/n noticed that he wasn't using it quite the way it was supposed to be held.

"Txur ni'ul. Stronger" You told Jake, letting him know how it is that you're supposed to do it. You inhaled and tapped your stomach, and he immediately got the message, holding up the bow and arrow again as you taught him.

Jake inhaled deeply and tried to aim the arrow toward the target in front of him. Seeing mistakes in his form, Y/n came up to him and tapped his stomach, prompting him to push it in as he inhaled. She fixed his arms as well, with the angle he held the bow. Y/n then stepped back with her hands on her hips to see from another angle if he was standing right.

Y/n calls me skxawng. It means moron.

Over this time, Norm eventually started to be nicer to Jake. He started to see that the position Jake is in, isn't his fault. In turn, Norm decided to help his comrade and teach him what he knows about the Na'vi, hopefully helping to get the Omaticaya to respect him.

"This is a very important part of it" Norm explained to Jake, sitting in front of him. Norm was showing Jake the 'I see you' gesture that all Na'vi do to one another to show respect. "I see you" Jake repeated after Norm, doing the same hand gesture that he was showing him.

Norm's attitude had improved lately

Jake repeated the same thing over and over, but Norm continued to teach him over trial and error no matter how frustrated Jake was. "But it's not just 'I'm seeing you in front of me'. It's 'I see into you. I see you." Norm said, and Jake nodded along, understanding a bit more.

It's good he's back on board. He thinks I'm a 'skxawng' too.

"I'm accepting you. I understand you. So you gotta get this, okay?" Norm said, making Jake smile and nod, then bury his face in his hands to continue learning from him.

My feet are getting tougher every day. I can run farther and faster every day.

After so much time not being able to use his legs, Jake feels this amazing rush when he runs in his Avatar form, but then it's back to reality when he disconnects the link from his Avatar and he has come to accept that fact.

Y/n and Jake ran across the branches from tree to tree in the vicinity of Hometree. She was teaching him how to truly feel like an Omaticaya Na'vi. Using the forest as an outlet for yourself is incredibly important. While running, Jake was able to keep up with Y/n, and he was getting better compared to how he started, so Y/n couldn't help but feel her teachings were coming to fruition.

The two of them ran, and while Y/n swung from tree to tree, Jake trusted his body to do the same. The philosophy he has been using to rely on his own body is to trust it to know what to do. So far, it has worked tremendously and Jake has made great progress.

Over the weeks they spent together, Y/n couldn't help but feel the walls that she put up for him start to crumble day by day. It was impossible for her now not to fall in love with this man. He was so persistent and continued to keep moving forward no matter how hard the lessons are. Every time he gave her the simplest looks, her stomach would fill with butterflies and sparks that she tried to suppress the best she could. Whenever she thought that it was enough training for the day, Jake surprised her and told her that he could keep going. She liked that about him.

Jake continued to practice riding Pa'li's, and he got better every day. He was now riding one and was doing pretty well. "Yeah! Check it out!" He cheered, happy that he was making progress, but he got too distracted and the horse flung his body into the mud. "Crap!" He said when he landed face first to the ground, making Y/n giggle to herself.

The next lesson was very fun for Y/n. It was a rainy day in the forest and you decided to take this as an opportunity to show Jake how alive plant life and flora became when it rained.

Every day it's reading the trails, the tracks at the waterhole, and the tiniest scents and sounds.

Y/n led Jake up a small hill where the two were hidden, peeking over the edge to see a small family of Viperwolves, living peacefully amongst their surroundings. The mom was looking over her cubs while they played. A small smile came upon Y/n's face, and Jake didn't fail to notice this, as he looked at her while she wasn't looking and admired her.

She's always going on about the flow of energy, the spirits of animals. I hope all this tree-hugger crap isn't on the final.

Back at the small base where the crew was stationed, Grace was looking through a microscope while Jake recorded his log. "This isn't just about eye-hand coordination out there, you know. You need to listen to what she says. You can't even begin to imagine how much Y/n means to the things around her. Why do you think her hair glows the way it does? You should try to see the forest through her eyes" Grace explained, not looking up from her microscope but still giving her input.

"Excuse me. This my video log here" Jake laughed, turning to Grace and pointing to the camera with his thumb. The red-headed scientist could only chuckle at his statement.

Jake and Y/n continue to run through the forest. Both from up in the trees, and down on the ground. Y/n has noticed how much of a natural Jake had become after so many lessons. Before continuing, the two came across a dead end on the branch.

While Y/n jumped down over the edge and put her bow behind her back, Jake stayed frozen on the spot as he watched you. You used the giant leaves to cushion every fall, bouncing off of each one gracefully. Eventually, once you made your way down and landed on the ground safely, you looked at Jake expectantly who was looking down at you.

With Y/n, it's learn fast or die.

Before jumping, Jake took a few steps back and chuckled nervously. "You've gotta be kidding me..." He said, then adjusted his arrow so that it was behind his back, and took the leap. Y/n was a spectator down below, seeing his arms flail around, with no coordination at all, not seeing where he was landing or anything.

Y/n winced slightly as he saw him bump into some branches and get tangled in vines. His bow and arrow also fell during his fall, so when he finally landed, with a pained grunt, it was just him covered in grass and leaves. Before embarrassing himself further, Jake stood up, grabbed his bow, and tried to look like he hadn't just had the most awkward fall ever and smiled at you. Y/n shook her head with a small laugh and started walking away, gesturing with her head for him to follow behind her.

-

The next day, Y/n received the biggest surprise of all. When she woke up, Jake wasn't there in the hammock beside hers so she began to wonder where he was. He had lessons again today, but maybe it was a good thing he wasn't here because she could give him a break for pushing him so hard these days.

After getting ready for the day and having breakfast, she entered the common area of the village to see someone in person who she never thought she would ever see again. It was Grace.

Y/n stood there frozen as she saw Grace interacting with the young Na'vi girls, but when they finally scattered and left Grace alone, the woman turned to Y/n, and a smile spread across her face.

Without hesitation, Y/n started sprinting over to Grace and embraced her in a hug. Almost instantly, Grace returned it and held her favorite student in her arms. Y/n turned her head around while still in Grace's arms and then saw Neytiri standing there with a smile. She must have already greeted her before you woke up.

Y/n and Grace parted from their hug and looked at each other. "I see you, Grace. I missed you so much. How are you here?" Y/n asked curiously, hoping that her teacher would be able to stay here, at least temporarily.

"I see you, Y/n" Grace smiled at you, observing how grown up you've gotten since she's last seen you. "I don't think I'm the one who's supposed to answer that question. But the person behind you might be" Grace said slyly, and you gave her a confused look before turning around and seeing Jake with a soft smile on his face.

You turned yourself around to see Grace looking at you with a warm look on her face before she departed and walked over to Neytiri. Being left alone, you then walked over to Jake in hopes to get some answers on how this could have happened. Y/n thought Grace was banished forever from the Omaticaya.

"How did this happen? I thought Grace was forbidden from coming back here" Y/n said, looking at Jake for answers. He sighed and rubbed his hand on the back of his neck.

"I, uh...I talked Mo'at into letting Grace come back to the village. I know it's the first time she's here since the school closed down" Jake responded, and your eyes widened. You turned back to see Grace interacting with her old students and talking to them, saying how big they've gotten since she's last seen them and how pretty they all are. Y/n turned back to Jake with an expectant look on her face, and he understood so he began to explain how is it that he did it.

"I saw some pictures from you, Grace, Neytiri, and her students from a long while ago. I wanted to do something for you like this. I did this because I care about you and Grace a lot" Jake explained, getting a bit bashful, and receiving a shocked and touched expression from you in return.

Y/n didn't even say anything else before hesitating to bring Jake into a hug. She wrapped her arms around his neck, standing on her tippy toes, making him stiffen from shock for a moment. After realizing what was happening, Jake responded and wrapped his arms around your waist and hips, returning your hug happily.

As he hugged you and buried his face in your hair, he started to notice how it started to glow dimly, which is something he hasn't seen happen in a while. Jake would be lying if he said his heart wasn't beating incredibly fast, and he hoped yours was too.

Coming back to her senses, Y/n pulled away and looked around to see if anyone saw that happen. She got carried away by her emotions, but she did appreciate immensely what he did for her. Jake still doesn't know what happened in that school, but even if he doesn't know, he was glad he could bring these students back with their role models and Y/n back with someone she considers dear to her.

That night, Jake and Y/n came upon this bioluminescent part of the forest. Ironically, it felt like you were in another world. The two came upon this small lizard that whenever you touched it, its back legs spread out like a fan and began to spin with a croak, displaying an orange-yellow light. Seeing this, knowing there were more, Y/n ran through a grass field and a few other lizards started spinning as well all around you.

The reaction made her laugh, and Jake did as well, being fond of both you and the creatures of the forest. Everything down to the plants, the rocks, the water, and so on, was mesmerizing and enchanting. The two explored this section together, and then came upon a bioluminescent river.

Without hesitation, Jake jumped in, with Y/n close behind him. There were lily pads on the shores of the river, making the moment all the more special. As he swam, he looked over at her and saw how graceful she is, how effortlessly gentle she was with the water. For some time, they both swam upstream until they came to a dead end in the river. When they left the river, they explored a bit more before going back to Hometree.

Jake deeply appreciated moments like these, knowing he was falling deeper with this girl and he couldn't deny it anymore. He loved being with her, laughing with her, admiring her, and everything in between. He loved those little jabs she made at him when he made a mistake, and also those praises she gave him when he does something right. He loved walking through the forest with you, experiencing Pandora in an entirely new light. Although, he knew that this dream was far from attainable in the circumstances he was in.

Back in their small base, Grace was taking more notes of the samples she's been taking and noticed Jake had fallen asleep in front of the camera while filming a video log. She sighed and turned off the camera.

"Come on, Marine" Grace said gently, moving Jake's wheelchair and moving him over to his bunk across the room. After laying his back down on his bed, Grace lifted his legs and put them inside the bunk, laying them in a comfortable position as he was still asleep.

At first, when she first met him, Grace was skeptical of Jake. At this point, she deeply cared for the ex-marine. It was like a very close friend relationship by now, rather than just coworkers. She cared for Jake and she's proud of how far he's come in this project.

The next day, Y/n wanted to see how much Jake had improved with his archery. Due to that, she brought him to the same shooting as before. When he was ready, he pulled his bow with his elbow and arms in the correct position. You walked up to him and your hands touched his stomach, to correct him if needed. His body was firm and toned, so you then checked his arms to see their position.

It was oblivious to you how close together your faces were. Jake turned his head to look intently at you as if admiring every detail about your face so he never forgets. After you noticed his stare and turned to look at him, you backed off as he smirked and chuckled at your bashful reaction. Getting past the moment, you tutted at him to shoot, and when he did, the shot was perfect and hit the target just right. You were so proud he's come so far.

Later that day, after walking through the woods for a while, Y/n reached up to a plant that had caught a bit of water inside after the recent rainfall they had. You grabbed it and brought it down to your mouth, letting the water fall and satiated your thirst. You could feel Jake's stare, but you finished drinking your water and wiped your lips gently with your hand. After that, both of you moved on to continue your forest exploration for the day.

I'm trying to understand this deep connection that the people have to the forest. Like Y/n does. She's always talking about a network of energy that flows through all living things. She says that all energy is borrowed, and one day, you have to give it back.

Jake and Y/n, as well as Neytiri and the rest of the village, attended a ritual of life that is being held for an elder of the clan who passed away. Y/n stood in front of the grove where the deceased lay, and you summoned a small seedling of Eywa to land on your hands, prayed closely to it so that the body can be at peace, and only to then blow onto the spirit to let it fly down onto the body.

Jake watched this ritual with amazement. He had never seen anything like it, not even on Earth, and he loved that he learned something every day about the Na'vi that left him in awe.

The next day, Y/n came up to Jake and grabbed his hand. At first, he was alarmed, but then relaxed when he realized it was you. "Come," You said to him with a soft smile, making him wonder where you were taking him.

He doesn't ask questions the entire way there, but as you started to get closer, he started to realize that you were leading him to the path to Grace's old school. He knew you used to attend it, but he didn't know why you were taking him here, and why he was there.

After reaching the shack and the doorway to the school, Y/n's hands left Jake's and she turned to him. "Wait here," You told him, running into the school and leaving him outside to wait. A few minutes later, you came back out with something in your hands that looked very much like a book.

Before Jake could ask anything else, you were grabbing his hand once again and leading him toward a tree close to the hut. "Can you tell me what's happening? I'm really confused" Jake asked, and Y/n turned to him while preparing to climb the tree and shook her head. Jake sighed and decided it was best if he just trusted her and see where this went.

Once Y/n started climbing, Jake did too shortly after. All of the training that he did in his Avatar body was paying off. When Y/n got to the top, you scooched over on the branch you chose so that Jake could sit next to you.

A few seconds later, Jake reached the branch you were in and made his way over, sitting down beside you. As he got a closer look at what you had in your grasp, his eyes widened a bit. He noticed it was the same Lorax book that he found back when he, Grace, and Norm visited the school a few months back.

"Can you finally tell me why you brought me here?" Jake asked with a chuckle, and you nodded wordlessly. Y/n was silent for some time before finally speaking up. "I...I just wanted to say thank you. For what you did the other day" Y/n said, shyly looking down and not daring to make eye contact with Jake. At your words, he smiled and felt his heart doing flips. "It was nothing. I know how important Grace is to you, so it was something that I wanted to do" Jake said bashfully.

"She is. She has taught me so much. When I was in her school, this was my favorite book to read when I was first learning English" Y/n explained, showing the Lorax book to Jake. He took the book from your hands and gently ran his hands along the cover. "I'm glad it's still in good shape" You added with a smile.

While looking at the cover, Jake started to reminisce for the first time in months about his brother Tommy. It wasn't a sad memory it made him happy to still be able to remember these sorts of things.

He remembered how he loved to read 'The Lorax' with Tom when they were young, and back on Earth, reading books brought them closer together as twins when they were kids. They'd huddle in a corner of the house for hours reading the works of Dr. Seuss together.

"Is there a reason why you still come back here?" Jake asked, changing the subject and being completely genuine and curious. He knew that something had happened to this school before it closed down, so he wanted to know what makes Y/n come back to re-open old wounds that have already started healing for the most part.

"If I'm being honest, whenever things get too hard in reality, I come back here and read this story. It sounds childish, believe me. But, It takes my mind off of everything that's troubling me. I don't know what it is." You explained, hoping he wouldn't make fun of it and Jake noticed how your Na'vi accent was really prominent whenever you spoke English, so he loved listening to it when you spoke.

"Yeah?" He asked softly and sincerely, and you turned to face him to see he was looking at you intently. His eyes were bored into yours as if he was trying to figure you out. Many words wanted to come out, given how struck you are by him at the moment, but you simply nodded at his words. "I'm glad you have an outlet like that, Y/n" Jake added.

Y/n stared deeply into Jake's eyes while he bored into hers. The night sky reflected in both of them while the planet that could be seen in their sky blended in with them as they sat on the branch.

Jake was happy that Y/n had finally decided to share an important part of her with him, he felt as if they have taken a big step in their friendship, even if he wanted it to be something more.

Deep down, Y/n wanted something more with Jake too, but it was not possible. She can't be with him even if she wanted to.

Before she knew it and could finish her thoughts, Jake's hand gently lifted and he placed it right on your cheek, brushing his thumb against your cheekbone. Out of instinct, your hair started to glow, but it was a very intense light this time. You wanted to stop this before it was too late, but you can't move, even if deep down you wanted this too.

His other hand was placed gently on your hip, making those butterflies in your belly appear once again. Jake started to lean in, and instinctively out of panic before his lips reached yours, you turned your head away and began climbing down the branch. Jake was left there stunned without knowing what to say.

"We should go back," You said to him, and he nodded wordlessly, starting to come down the tree as well. As awkward silence ensued on the way back, you couldn't stop kicking yourself for not letting it happen. You wanted it, and Eywa sent you a message telling you that it was supposed to happen, so why are you being so cagey and closed off?

In Jake's mind, he understood. He wasn't upset. He took a shot in the dark, and maybe now is not the time. If you didn't feel the same way or weren't ready, he would understand and accept it. Even if he didn't want to. Maybe his move earlier was too fast and you needed more time, so that's what he was going to do. Even if he has to stall Quaritch to let the mission go on for longer, he would.

-

Later that week, Jake was now coming out of his link for the day, given that he has been there for a long time. The pod opened, revealing Jake laying down as he waited to be able to sit up. Once he did, he groaned into his hands and sighed.

"You were in for 16 hours today," Grace said to Jake, not being aware of the reason why he is being in his link more than usual. That reason being you. Jake didn't say anything to that, he was too drained.

Grace understood this, so she left the room and told him to get in his wheelchair to meet her at the small dining room in their base. When he got there, Grace was taking food out of the microwave and set it down on a plate. "You're still losing weight" She pointed out, seeing that Jake was wheeling himself somewhere else.

"Oh, no, you don't. Come back here" She said, grabbing onto the back handles of his wheelchair and leading him back to the table where his food was waiting. Jake argued back saying he needed to sleep but Grace insisted that he needed to sleep first. "Bon Appetite," Grace said, while Jake observed his microwave food, then began to eat.

"Today I made a kill," Jake started, searching for the salt at the table as he spoke. "And we ate it. I know where that meal came from" He said, making Grace chuckle. "Other body. You need to take care of this body, too. Okay?" She pointed out while bringing the plate closer.

"Get it? Let's eat it" Grace pushed, trying her best to get food into his system. "Yeah, yeah" Jake hummed, but seeing him struggle to open the bag, Grace decided to intervene. "Here. I'll make it easier for you" She said, grabbing the bag and pouring out its contents onto the plate.

"You look like crap. You're burning way too hard" Grace said with her cigarette dangling off her mouth as she prepped his food. "Thank you," Jake said jokingly in response to her comment, but also partly because of her help.

Jake looked at her cigarette, grabbed it, put it out, and then threw it away. "Get rid of this shit," He added, dusting his hands off. "And then you can lecture me," Jake said, making Grace raise an eyebrow at him.

"Now, I'm telling you as your boss," She started, starting to throw out the trash leftover. "and as someone who might even consider being a friend someday," She joked, patting his head gently. "to take some downtime. Eat this please" Grace continued, gesturing to his plate and heading towards the kitchen area.

"Trust me. I...learned that the hard way" Grace said, shutting the microwave door closed. Before he started eating, Jake started to look and sift through the pictures of you, Grace, and Neytiri with other children at her school. He still had no idea what happened, but it is something that he has continued to ponder for some time now.

"What did happen at that school, Grace?" Jake asked, making said woman stops in her tracks on what she was doing and exhaled deeply. She didn't want to go into those memories again, but she knew it was a matter of time before Jake asked about the subject.

"Y/n and Neytiri's sister, Sylwanin, stopped coming to school. She was very angry about the clear-cutting" Grace started, but paused, given how painful the story is. "One day, she and a couple of other young hunters came running in all painted up. They had set a bulldozer on fire" Grace continued, grabbing a drink from the refrigerator and then closing it.

"I guess they thought I could protect them. The troopers pursued them to the school" Graced paused, knowing what came next. "They killed Sylwanin in the doorway. Right in front of Y/n and Neytiri, and then shot the others" Grace said, referring to the children.

Upon hearing this, Jake couldn't help but feel this sullen sentiment in his heart. From that incident, It can explain a lot about the way you are today. No one should have to go through that. Jake looked out the window, not even beginning to imagine the pain and grief you must have gone through that day, and why the Na'vi are so wary towards Sky People.

"I got most of the kids out, but they never came back" Grace added, heading back over to Jake who was still deep in thought. Nothing was said for a few seconds. "I'm sorry..." Jake said, knowing there was nothing he could say to make the situation better, but a few comforting words were a good start. Grace took the picture from Jake's hand and set it up on the window. The same picture that showed you and Neytiri with such bright smiles on your faces. He understands now.

"A scientist stays objective. We can't be ruled by emotion," Grace said, making Jake turn to her. "But I put 10 years of my life into that school. They called me sa'nok" She said, with tears welling up in her eyes.

"Mother," Jake said, knowing the meaning of that Na'vi word. "Mother..." Grace repeated, her eyes trying to contain tears at bay while she tried to smile at Jake. "That kind of pain reaches back through the link" Grace finished, reaching over to pat the spot over Jake's shirt where his heart was. Everything was starting to come together for him, and now, all he learned was starting to make sense.

-

It was eventually the time for Jake's last test to see if he was ready to take the rite of passage every hunger should take. To show what he knows, Y/n followed behind him to see if he was doing everything right. She trusted him to know what the process for hunting was. It was a rainy day, so it was perfect for Jake to do this kill. The forest concealed them perfectly this way. Y/n and Jake crouched and lowered themselves below a few plants and branches.

Jake exhaled deeply and raised his bow and arrow, aligning it perfectly to where he wanted to hit the animal. The creature they were trying to kill this time around was what the Na'vi called a Yerik. Noticing their presence, the gazelle-type creature hissed in their direction. Sensing it was a good time to shoot, Jake released his arrow and made a perfect kill.

As the arrow penetrated the animal, Y/n's hair glowed dimly and she got a migraine that lasted just a few seconds. Before heading over to his kill, Jake noticed Y/n's discomfort and rubbed my arm comfortingly. You nodded, signaling to him that you were okay. After getting the go-ahead from you, Jake walked over to the creature he killed and sat by its side while it cried out in its dying moments.

Y/n followed after him and sat by Jake, watching what he did. He took out his knife from the holder in his chest and began to say the words to send the animal in peace.

"Oel ngati kameie, ma tsmukan, ulte ngaru seiyi irayo. Ngari hu Eywa salew tirea, tokx 'ì'awn slu Na'viyä hapxì." (I See you, Brother, and thank you. Your spirit goes with Eywa, your body stays behind to become part of the People.) Jake said, pushing his dagger into the creature's chest, killing it instantly. His Na'vi had been improving a lot more each day.

Jake pulled out the knife soon enough, and he put it back into its holder. "A clean kill," Y/n said, feeling proud of how far Jake had come. After removing the arrow from its body, Jake turned to you.

"You are ready..." You said, so now he was at last prepared to take the final test that will prove his strength as a true hunter of the Omaticaya clan.

Hi! This chapter has a mix of a few of my own scenes so I hope its not too messy! I tried to arrange it in a way that wasn't too confusing, so I hope this chapter wasn't all over the place lol
