Those Were The Days

Zora POV

I walked into the Banks kitchen with my camera around my neck as Will walked up to me and began taking pictures as I posed and smiled as he continued taking pictures

"Yes darling pose. The camera loves you. Natural Beauty." Will said in a French accent as I laughed

"Get those developed and send them to me" I told him going to the counter to grab breakfast and orange juice

"Will, sweetie, you've been snapping everything in sight for days now. What's goin' on?" Mrs. Banks asked

"Well, it's a photography assignment, Aunt Viv. I wanted to do something meaningful and artistic but Zee wouldn't get naked." Will said as I slapped the back of his head as he flinched

"Morning, all." Carlton said walking into the kitchen with his camera and tripod

"Carlton, the photography assignment is due today and you haven't snapped a single picture yet." I told him

"Not to worry." He told me as he set the camera down on the table and began posing as he took pictures of himself

"Carlton, this is a photography assignment not a Prince video." Will told him

"Madam, sir, there is a most perturbing person out here who claims to be an old friend of yours." Geoffrey said walking into the kitchen

Who is it, Geoffrey?

"She didn't say. She was too busy calling me "A pathetic servant of the capitalist fat cats." Geoffrey said

"Marge!" Mr. and Mrs. Banks said as a woman ran in the kitchen and the three of them hugged

"Marge Smallwood! Girl, give me a hug!" Ms. Banks said as they hugged her individually

"Woman, the last time I saw you was at Antiwar Rally in '71.
You stole my afro-comb."Mr. Banks told her

"Don't look like you be needin' it now." She joked

"Hi. I'm Carlton." Carlton told her shaking her hand

"Hi, Carlton." She told him

"I'm Zora" I said shaking her hand

"My aren't you beautiful. You remind me of Vivian of when she was young" she told me as I smiled

"Hey, hey, how you doin'? I'm Will." Will said shaking her hand

"My God, you look just like my old boyfriend El." Marge told him

"I take it El was blindingly handsome. Well, hold on. Who's El?" Will asked

"Eldridge Cleaver." She told us as my eyes widened

"Oh, was he related to Wally and the Beav?" Carlton asked laughing

"Wait. Hold it. Look..You knew Eldridge Cleaver?Like the Civil Rights Writer?" I asked as she nodded

"Oh, we were all in the movement together. Me, El, Olafemi and Adesimbo." Marge told us

"Wait, hold up. Olafemi and Adesimbo, too? Oh, my..Man, that's unbelievable! Who the hell are they?" Will asked excitedly

"Phil is Olafemi and Vivian is Adesimbo." She told us as the three of them raised their fist in the air

"Oh, okay, and I'm about to busta gutta." Will joked

Geoffrey went get everybody tea as we all say in the living room joined by Ashley and Hilary

"Well, you two have come a long way from that fifth-floor
walkup you had when Olafemi and I were in law school." Marge said

"Oh, boy, those were the days. Oh, we marched on Washington
staged sit-ins, held hunger strikes." Mr. Banks told us

"Oh! Would that have been between breakfast and lunch
or lunch and dinner?" Will asked

"But we knew how to part-ay, too." Mrs. Banks said

"Ooh! Did we ever! Remember Woodstock, 20 of us
tried to squeeze into that tent? Vivian and I jumped
into that lake naked!" Mr. Banks asked laughing as Mrs. Banks smile dropped

"I wasn't at Woodstock." she told him as he stopped laughing as we all stared at him waiting to see how he was gonna get himself out of this

"Oh, yeah. Well, kids, did I tell you that Marge and I went to school together, that she graduated near the top of our
law school class?" Mr. Banks asked changing the subject and laughing awkwardly

"So, Marge, are you with a firm or on your own?" Mr. Banks asked her

"On my own. I'm still in the struggle." She told him

"Oh, that's dope, Marge. You never gave up on what you believed in." Will told her

"Oh, I do my best." she told him modestly

"Hey, check it out. Look right into the camera and say
♪ Burn baby burn ♪♪" Will sang holding up his camera

"No, no, no. You can't take my picture." She said getting off the couch as we all stared in confusion

"I mean, just wait for me to freshen up a little. But speaking of pictures..look at what I have here." She told us pulling out a photo album as we all crowed around to look at it

"Oh, my God. Who are those two weirdos? And who is that ugly little kid in thedashikidiaper?" Hilary asked laughing

"Well, those two weirdos are your father and I and that ugly
little kid is you." Mrs. Banks told her

"The bone in your hair is a good look for you, Hilary." Carlton told her

"Really gives you character" I tried to make her feel better

"Yeah, you've got sort of a Yabba Dabba Doo." Will told her

"Mom, look at how short your skirt is." Ashley said pointing to another picture

"Oh, your mother's legs made the miniskirt famous." Mr. Banks said smiling

"I have mom's legs. Can I wear my skirt that short?" Ashley asked

"You have my legs and the answer is no." He told her as she pouted

"Marge, girl, you must be tired after your trip. Now you're staying with us and I don't want to hear any arguments." Mrs. Banks told her

"Oh, you aren't getting any. Just tell me where to plug
in my 8-track." She told them

"Well, Geoffrey will take your bags up to the guestroom." Mr. Banks said as Geoffrey grabbed her bag

"I carry my own bag." She said snatching it from him. Okay that was rude

"My brother, you have been oppressed repressed and suppressed
by capitalism. Don't you know you can be free?" Marge asked Geoffrey

"I have known freedom. Don't like the health plan." Geoffrey told her as Mr. Banks got up

"Geoffrey is not oppressed. He's, uh, more..Our friend. Aren't you, Geoff?" Mr. Banks asked wrapping his arm around his shoulder

"Whatever you say....Phil." Geoffrey said patting his stomach

Later that afternoon I was in photography class with Will and Carlton as we were listening to Mr. Knotts lecture

"So you can see how Ansel Adams created a work of genius
just by using light and shadow which brings me to your work, geniuses. Alright. Let's see those homework assignments." He told us as we all pulled out of assignments as he walked around the classroom and looked at our assignments

"Will, that wouldn't happen to be gum in your mouth, would it?" Mr. Knotts asked

"Yeah, yes, Mr. Knotts." Will told him

"Oh, cool. Do you have any more?" He asked as Will have him a stick of gum

"Thanks. That's good." He told him as he walked to me. I was sitting between Will and Carlton as always

"I like that. Great work Zora" he told me as he walked to Carlton, who was in the desk behind me

"Carlton, this is..It's a very..It's..What the hell is it?" He asked as Will and I laughed

"Our assignment, sir. You asked us to experiment with shadow.
I call this Bunny On A Wall." Carlton told him throwing up two fingers

"And I'm going to call this Midget At A Desk." Will said turning around and taking his picture as I laughed

The bell rang as we all started collecting our stuff and getting ready to go

"Oh, uh, everybody, um, before you go there's something
I'd like you to remember. I think that there is something very special about every single one of you. Class dismissed." He told us as we began getting up

"Oh, whoa, wait, wait, hold up, hold up. Oh, What about our trip
to the Mapplethorpe exhibit? Uh, don't you want our permission slips? Mine ain't forged this time. Come on, cornflake,
where's your permission slip?" Will asked pulling out his permission slip

"Are you kidding, my parents won't let me look at naked photos.
Look they thought the "Little Mermaid" was pornographic." Kellog told us

"It turned me on." Carlton told him as we looked at him weirdly

"I can't go see the Mapplethorpe exhibit either." Darren told us as everyone started agreeing

"Actually, none of us is going. It seems that a lot of your parents
just don't approve of this exhibit. And since going was my bright idea I've been fired." Mr. Knotts told us

"What? Hold up. They can't do that." Will said as I agreed

"No you're like the best teacher ever" I protested

"This is an outrage. They can't give us a new teacher now.
I mean, I've spent the whole semester sucking up to you." Carlton said as I glared at him for being so insensitive

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was the weekend it's been two days since Mr. Knotts was fired. I told my grandfather about it and he promised he'll go to the school board on Monday.

"Oh, hey, Marge." Will and I said as we walked into the kitchen as she greeted us

"I still can't believe they fired the best teacher that Bel-Air Prep ever had." Will said as we sat down at the table

"You know, you've been talkin' about this for past two days.
Move on it. You know what Malcolm said. "By any means necessary." Marge told us

"I don't agree with Malcolm's philosophy" I told her as she looked at me

"Ah, you're one of those peaceful protestors" she asked

"Well no I just don't think we need to result to violence or destruction of any kind" I disagreed

"Zora, honey, peaceful doesn't win the war. Sometimes you have to get your hands dirty" she told me as I sat and thought about what she said. She is right. Peaceful doesn't win, when you make statements that's what wins.

"Yeah, you know, Marge, you're right. I'mma move on it.
I like having you around. You get me all hyped and everything." Will told her as she smiled

"Hey, I bet that's how you felt when you roomed with Angela Davis, right?" Will asked

"Ooh, yeah. But we had a lot of huge arguments." She told us as we looked confused

"What? About her political views?" I asked

"No, about how she used to always put her name on everything in the refrigerator. Got on my nerves." She told us

"Yeah, and I bet with that big old afro she probably had a lot of
hair and afro sheen and stuff all over the place.." Will asked as she laughed

"Boy, don't get me started." She said as I glared at them

"But yours looks good Zee" Will said trying to touch my afro ponytail but I slapped his hand away

"You know what? I'm going to call you Hasani." She told Will as he looked offended

"Oh, what, you're gonna just diss me right in my face like that, Marge?" Will asked

"It's Swahili. It means, handsome." She explained to him as he smiled

"Ah. I like how you talk, Marge. I like how you think, too. Hey, you know what? I got a name for you, too. It's, uh..It's Too Legit To Quit." He told her as she smiled

"Hey, that's pretty clever. Did you just think of that?" She asked him

"Uh..Yeah. Why, you like it?" Will asked neverously as she turned to me

"I'm gonna call you roho nzuri" she told me as I looked confused

"What does that mean" I asked as she smiled

"Why don't you go figure it out" she told me when Geoffrey walked up to Marge and gave her a cup of tea

"Your Perrier..my sister." He told her when Mr. and Mrs. Banks walked in

"Hey, Marge, listen, we just got tickets to the Roberta Flack concert tonight. Come on, we'll grab a bite to eat first." Mrs. Banks told her

"No. I don't feel like going out tonight." she told them

"Oh, come on, you haven't been any place since you've been here." Mr. Banks told her

"I mean, we'll make it another time, okay?" She told them when Ashley walked in wearing a dashiki and a matching hat too

"Greetings, Sister Adesimbo. Greetings, Brother Olafemi.
Power to the people!" She yelled throwing her fist in the air

"Oh, Ash. You kind of look like Winnie the Pooh Mandela." Will told her

"Mom, daddy I am a depressed minority and I want my
allowance increased." Ashley told them

"No." Mr. Banks told her

"Then I'm staging a sit-in and I won't eat my peas." Ashley told them

"Ooh that'll show 'em" I said sarcastically

"You will eat your peas." Mr. Banks told her as Ashley pouted

"Come on, daddy. Suppose Gandhi's parents treated him like this?" Ashley asked

"Gandhi ate his peas." Mr. Banks told her

"Then I shall spray-paint my demands on the pool house wall." Ashley said as she walked out as Marge looked at Mr. and Mrs. Banks

"We like to encourage free speech." Mr. Banks told Marge as Mrs. Banks chuckled neverously

"We certainly do." Mrs. Banks said as they both ran out the kitchen

"Ashley! Girl, are you crazy?" Mr. Banks yelled

"Get your butt back here!" Mr. Banks yelled when the phone rang and Will went go pick it up

"You're on the mic. What's your beef? Oh. Uh, no, sir. He just stepped out. Uh, yeah, sure. I'll tell him. Alright."Will said as he hung up

"Who was that" I asked

"That was the FBI looking for Uncle Phil. I wonder what they want." Will asked

"They want me." Marge told us

"What Marge, you have to tell everyone. It's not right that you're staying here. You can get these people in serious trouble" I told her

"You're right. I really should" she told me as I just stared at her

"Oh you mean now" she asked as I nodded as we waited for everyone to meet in the kitchen

"There's no easy way for me to say this but I guess I better flat out and say it. The FBI wants me." Marge told them as they looked shocked

"Really? Could you put in agood word for me? I'm thinking of applying." Carlton said as Mr. Banks shook his head

"She means they're after her, Carlton. She's a fugitive." Mr. Banks explained

"We're harboring a fugitive? Look, no offense, Marge, but I'm not going to prison over this. No way am I sharing a cell with a woman called Big Mama." Hilary said as she walked out the kitchen

"Marge, I don't understand. What do they want you for?" Mrs. Banks asked

"Take your pick, I helped a bunch of migrant workers bust out of an internment camp broke into some federal buildings shredded a few files and made life pretty damn difficult for the South African Embassy back East." Marge told

"Man, and I thought I was doing my part by going to Spike Lee movies." Will said

"Does the government know where you are?" Mr. Banks asked

"They probably know I'm in the area. And they're checking out
everybody I know." Marge told them

"Oh, no, it's cool, Marge. We're gonna stand right behind you, right?" Will said standing behind her chair as we all looked at each other

"Marge, you know we love you but we've got a family
to think about." Mrs. Banks told us

"Why don't you give us some time to think this over?" Mr. Banks asked her

"I understand." She said as she began walking out the kitchen

"Marge. We're behind you 200 percent. Peace." Carlton told her throwing the peace sign

Once she left the kitchen Carlton ran straight to the phone and picked it up

"Operator, get me the FBI." Carlton said as Will took the phone from him and put it back

"Carlton, what are you doin', man?" Will asked

"Come on, Will, we're harboring a fugitive." Carlton said

"She's not a fugitive. She's our friend. Come on Zee back me up" Will asked as I stood up and walked behind Carlton

"Will, Carlton's right she's a fugitive. We can all be arrested for this" I told him

"Are you serious she's our friend" Will told me as Ashley went stand by Will

"Yeah, and ever since she got here my diary has been a lot more interesting." Ashley said then walked out the kitchen

"Well, I agree, Ashley's diary is a lot more interesting." Carlton told us

"If she's really our friend she wouldn't want to put us in harm way" I told them

"Zora's right, friend or no friend it's not worth going to jail over." Carlton agreed

"Okay, that is enough, Carlton." Mrs. Banks told him

"Your mother and I will handle this." Mr. Banks told him as they both walked out the kitchen

"I hate to sound paranoid but do we really know if mom and dad
are who they say they are? Or if their names are really mom and dad?" Carlton asked as Will and I sighed and shook our heads a we walked out the kitchen. Will turned around looked at Carlton and sighed again as we continued walking out the kitchen

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It was Monday as we were all in photography class waiting for our substitute as Will walked into class and sat down

"Gentlemen, and lady we all agree that Mr. Knotts' dismissal is wrong. But we have the rights to redress our grievances which is why I urge you to sign this petition. Sometimes a man has to be willing to put his name on the line for what he believes in." Carlton said then signed the paper. I grabbed the paper and read the name he put down

"Ricky Ricardo?" I asked

"Lucy, you got some 'splainin' to do." Will told him then stood up as Carlton and Will helped me stand only desk

"Hey, look, fellas, there ain't no point in trying to reason
with the man hen the man is not trying to reason with you." I told everyone

"Right on." Kellog nodded

"What we gotta do is get up in his grill and show him
that we got the power. Peaceful doesn't win the war." I told them

"Yes. Power to the people. Say it loud. I'm black and I'm proud." Kellogg chanted holding his fist in the air as we all looked at him confused

"Alright. My man Cornflake got the spirit. He a little confused, but he got the spirit." Will said

"Hey, look. What we gotta do is take over this classroom. We gotta nail that door shut and we gotta chain ourselves together to show them that we mean business each and every one of us.
Now, y'all with me?" I asked holding my fist in the air

"Zora, I love you, I really do but I think I speak for all of us when I say..Let's get the hell out of here." Carlton said as everyone left the class as I got from on top of the desk

"Don't worry I'm 1000% behind you babe" Will told me as I smiled

"Thanks Will" I said as Kellogg walked up to us

"Yeah Don't worry, guys. They'll never take us alive." He told us

"Hey, calm down, man. I already bought my suit for the prom." Will told him as he grabbed a hammer with some nails and a board

"Hey, look, what we gotta do is nail that door shut." Will said

"I-I I'll call the handyman." Kellogg said walking to the door

"Come on, man, we radicals. We got to do things for ourselves." Will said

"You're right, my brother and my sister. Where are the safety goggles?" Kellogg asked

"Man, my butler forgot to pack them." Will said as we continued nailing the door shut

"Here. Here you go." Will said as I sat between them as they put on their handcuffs

"No. Here, man. It's easy. It's like this." Will said helping him as they put their handcuffs around my wrist

"Yo, yo. You alright, man?" Will asked as Kellogg started hyperventilating

"Yeah. I'm just hyperventilating. This is so exciting. We're like
the "Mod Squad" and Zora's Julie." Kellogg said

"Yeah, well, this ought to show them we mean business." Will said as Kellogg cheered

"Guys? What do we do now?" Kellogg asked

"We-we-we-we chant." I told them

"Attica!" Will started as Kellogg and I joined him

"Oh, man! You smell that? Damn! It's Chimichanga Day in the cafeteria." Will told us

"We should've packed more supplies" I told them as they nodded.

Today was an eventful day at school it took the entire football team to get through the door. I thought it was awesome my grandfather however did not

"Zora what you did wasn't right. Good thing you were let off with a warning since you never been in trouble" my grandfather said as we walked into our house

"But I stood up for what I believe. That's not a crime" I told him

"It's not but you are still a child" he told me

"I'm doing the same thing you used to do" I told him

"Part of me fighting those battles were so the next generation doesn't have to" he told me

"For the next two weeks no phone, no TV, no car privileges, you are to only report home and school no where else do you understand" he asked

"That's so not fair" I protested

"I'm not asking, I'm telling. Do you understand?" He asked a I rolled my eyes

"yes grandfather" I said as I began walking to my room

"And stop rolling your eyes" he told me

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's been three days since I've been on house arrest. I walked to my chalk board and added another strike

"Psst sister roho nzuri" I heard Will whisperer as I went and opened my balcony door

"Where's the 5-0" he asked sitting on my balcony ledge

"He went to the grocery store" I told him

"Man I missed you around the house. I been having to hang around Carlton" He told me as I laughed

"I know I'm locked up in here like I'm Black Rapunzel" I told him motioning to my chalk board

"Do you want me to help you escape" he asked as I shrugged

"Sure, I'm already in trouble how much more can I get in" I said as I closed the balcony door. Will grabbed my hand and helped me down

Will and I walked to the Banks house as we saw Marge making a sandwich

"Psst. Marge? Where Uncle Olafemi?" Will asked peeking his head into the kitchen

"He's in the study with Adesimbo." Marge told us as we walked into the kitchen

"Oh, yeah. Good thing he ain't in here! Cause if he was, I might just have to run back up to my room. Oh, what you doin'?" Will asked her

"Oh, now that the man's after me. I think it's best for me to split." She told us

"Yeah, well, you know, you got to get back to your work." Will told her as she nodded

"Hey, I heard that there was an anti-apartheid rally in D.C." I told her

"Yeah. I may swing by. I knew you'd understand, Will, Zora." She said smiling at us

"Alright, we'll be ready in about ten minutes." Will told her as she looked confused

"For what?" She asked

"We're coming with you." I told her

"Man, if we are going to be underground though I'll probably need aynother name. How about, uh, Akbar Shabazz Jenkins? and Zee could be Sira Shabazz Jenkins" Will asked

"Will, Zora, you're kids. You belong at home. You're only 17 and 16." She told us

"Oh, by the time you were 17 you burned your first bra." Will told her

"Baby, you can't do what I did." Marge told us

"But I could go get one of Zee's." Will said as she laughed

"Stay out of my underwear draw" I told him

"What I mean is, you have to find your own way, Will, Zora
Do you know, when I was your age there weren't many doors open to us. Some of them we had to blow open. And because we did, you've got more opportunities. Look at your grandfather" she said as I tilted my head

"You know my grandfather" I asked as she nodded

"Oh yeah, I knew your parents too. I met them at a few protest back in the day. You know they always talked about fighting battles so their kids don't have too" she told me

"They apparently did a good job because look how you turned out roho nzuri" she said smiling as I smiled back

"Still don't know what that means" I said shaking my head as she laughed

"You'll figure it out" she told me

"Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that things are perfect.
It's just that now you can fight our battles in the boardrooms, too.
And in the classrooms, the voting booths and the courtroom, just like your uncle." She told us

Wait. Well, hold up, hold up. I thought you said,
"By any means necessary." Will asked her

"Right, but it's up to you to figure out what's necessary. And, Will, Zora when the courtroom doesn't come find me." She told us

"You're a deep sister, Adebola." I told her

"And you...are the future, Hasani and roho nzuri." She told us as we smiled

That night I was sitting in the living room with the Banks family after Marge left when my grandfather walked in

"Hey does anyone wanna explain why the FBI is knocking on my door" my grandfather asked when Geoffrey walked in with a man

"Agent Marcus Collins of the FBI. If you need me, I'll be upstairs saluting the flag." Geoffrey said then walked out the room as my grandfather sat next to me

"Philip Banks. My wife Vivian." Mr. Banks said getting up shaking his hand as Mrs. Banks shook his hand too

"I understand you're acquainted with a woman named Margaret Smallwood. I have reason to believe she's been in contact with you, Mr. Banks." Agent Collins said

"Really? What would that reason be? We tap every black person's phone in the United States of America." He said as we all looked at each other

"Just a little FBI humor." He told us dryly

"But seriously, folks. Harboring a fugitive can have grave repercussions." He told us

"I don't know these people" my grandfather yelled

"Grandpa" I scolded as he shushed me

"Sshh girl I'm trying to get us out of here" he told me

"Margery Smallwood is a very close personal friend of mine.
I consider myself privileged to know her. She was here, but she left sometime this afternoon." Mr. Banks told him

"Do you have any idea where she was headed?" He asked pulling out a notepad and pen

"As a matter of fact, she said she was going to a nuclear power plant in Texas. Ah, but then again, she did mention a migrant workers' camp in, uh, Salinas." Mr. Banks told her

"No, honey, she said she was going to a voters' registration
drive in Biloxi." Mrs. Banks said

"Well, I thought she was just going to Saks." Hilary said

"Oh, get the heck outta here.'Y'all mean she ain't in the bathroom?" Will asked

"I must say, I'm disappointed in you, Mr. Banks. I would've thought a man in your position would be more aware
of his responsibilities." Agent Collins told him

"I know exactly what my responsibilities are.BSon, would you show Agent Collins to the door?" Mr. Banks asked as Carlton got up

"Hmm. By the way, I don't think we've met. Ricky Ricardo." Carlton told him as they walked out the door

"You are in so much trouble" my grandfather said turning towards me

"Thank you for fighting for me" I told him hugging him as he hugged me back

"You know you're grounded for another 2 weeks right" he asked

"I know" I said as he grabbed my face

"My precious roho nzuri" he said smiling as I smiled back and he hugged me again

I was in my bedroom. I had went check out a English/Swahili book. I was sitting at my desk trying to find the meaning of the nickname Marge gave me.

"roho nzuri: beautiful soul" I read as I smiled and continued flipping through the book

A/N it's been a while I know but I had writers block so bad plus I needed to take a break from this book because I didn't like the fighting going on in the comments.

It was hard writing Zora in this episode but I do like the message of it and I think we can apply it to now

My plan is to finish season 2 by the end of the week. I can't wait for Vying For Attention its top favorites from season 2. Young Raven Symone is just too precious
