Chapter Twenty-Three: Escape
(Yeah, I know there's music but I have a specific place for you peeps to play it. So when you play it, imagine what's going on. Like, visualize the text, ya know wut I'm sayin? Trust me it makes this chapter seem A LOT more exciting! Okie I'll let you read it now byeeeee)
Casey heard the creaking of the door opening, followed by pawsteps of two mammals. They're here. Okay just follow the plan, Casey. The vixen held her breath as the mammals came closer to her. Her eyes were closed, her body was limp, and she didn't make a single sound. She didn't hear Jack make any either. The plan was working out well. "Winter, they're not moving.", Mark said. "So? We only left them here for two nights! They can't be dead now!", the annoyed leopard said. "But since they're dead early, we should go back now. Gotta hang em up before Boss scolds us.", Winter said as she uncuffed both the vixen and jackrabbit. Yes. Perfect. Jack's plan is working! We're gonna be free! "But we also gotta check if they're really dead. Remember what happened 2 years ago?", the wolf said. Winter hissed. "Of course I remember! It was the first time Boss got mad at me! I'm not letting myself get killed by him. There will be no mistakes just like the times after that. Give me the knife. Let's test the rabbit.". What!? W-what are they doing? WHAT DO THEY MEAN TEST!? Ugh, I need to know if Jack's okay! I can't keep this act up any longer! Casey opened her eyes and saw Mark holding her but he wasn't paying attention. Winter was holding a knife near Jack's throat. Just as she was about to cut it, the vixen punched Mark's nose, causing him to fall back in pain and for Winter to put her attention to the vixen. Jack immediately took advantage of that and punched the leopard while grabbing the knife from her paws. The door was open so since Mark and Winter were distracted, Casey and Jack ran for it outside while grabbing a few weapons from them.
The vixen's fur was freezing cold. They didn't really have anything warm to wear but that didn't matter right now. They were still running with Winter, Mark, and some other mammals on their tail. It was hard for them to run in the snow, but they managed to lose them for a while. They ended up on a hill with two ways to go. One that goes up higher and one that goes downhill. They were near a hollow and dead log with the bottom half of it gone. The kidnappers were catching up. "Casey, go uphill, I'll meet you there, soon.", Jack said as he started to hide behind a large rock. Wait...is he going to ditch me?! Oh, so he's just like the rest huh? "Why aren't you coming with me?", the vixen asked. "I told you I'll meet you there! I have a plan. Just, here take this radio I stole from them. I'll tell you what to do there. Just run!", the bunny responded. As much as Casey knew what could happen, she still obeyed. For some reason, she still trusted that the rabbit won't abandon her. (Okay you can start the music) She ran up the hill while the kidnappers chased her. The hill got thinner and thinner and thinner until she had to run across a log to continue going up. It was hard to run on a thin log with slippery snow on it, so it was obvious that the vixen slipped. Casey caught hold of the log with her paws just as she was about to fall. It was a very unlucky spot she was in. The distance between the top route and the lower route wasn't much, but there was nothing beneath the spot she was in. In the lower path, there was a huge gap between the hill and a cliff. Unfortunately, the vixen was caught right above it. The kidnappers stopped in their trail and laughed at how things went. "So, I guess the pretty fox made it easier to do our job, huh?", Mark said. "It'll be a lot easier to catch her if she has nowhere to go.". Yup. I'm screwed. Casey heard a voice coming from the radio Jack gave her. "Casey, let go of the log!", the voice said. It was Jack. "What! Why? Where are you?", she questioned. "Just let go when I tell you to. I'm almost here.".
"Have you lost it!? If I fall I'm dead!".
"Just let go! Trust me!"
ARG! Of course, you're gonna do it, Casey. Well, he's more trustworthy than them so...The vixen let go of the branch. I am going to die. This is it. I'm dead. I'm dead. HELP ME! Just as she thought it was the end for her, she felt something grab her paw. Casey opened her eyes to see the jackrabbit pull her up on to the log they found earlier. Jack was riding the sled and landed into the snow of the cliff. There were still some of the kidnappers that were on his tail, too. "Ugh! They're still here!?", Casey said in annoyance. "Yep. Some of them that came after noticed me and started following me down here. Just...you have a gun, right?", he responded. "Oh ho say no more little bunny.", the vixen excitedly said. She pulled out an MK23 (legit all I know. Thanks, Klone) and started shooting the ones behind them. Not like anyone normal though. "Uh, could you calm down a bit?", Jack asked. "Well, if you want them to continue chasing us then sure.", the vixen said. "Never mind I regret asking.". Casey laughed a bit before shooting the last one on their tails. "Hold on!", Jack exclaimed as they were both heading to the end of the cliff. It shot them into the air as the rabbit grabbed her hand and they both jumped off and crashed into the snow. Luckily, since they weren't too high in the air and it was snow, no one was hurt. They watched the log crash into a tree in the nearby forest. (Okay now you can stop the music)
"THAT WAS AWESOME! Where'd you learn how to do that?!", Casey exclaimed. No response. She looked at the rabbit to see his attention on the forest. "Jack? Are you okay?", she asked. "Hmm? Oh uh sorry I didn't hear you. My mind was somewhere else.", he responded. "I asked if you were okay. You seem to be a little...distracted. What's wrong?"
"Nothing it's just...come on. I'll show you. It'll even get us closer to home.", he said as he led the vixen into the forest at a tree stump. Why did he bring me here? "This is the place I came to when I needed to calm down. There used to be an oak tree here. To others, it may have looked like a normal tree but to me, it was the sign of wisdom and strength. It was able to suffer through anything and I wanted to be the same. Until that day it broke down. It was the exact day the one mammal I trusted betrayed me like the rest. My dad.", the rabbit said. "What? But didn't you say that-". "I know what I said! But even he turned out to be lier! He was pretending just like the rest! They're all the same! None of them ever wanted me to live!", he snapped. Casey was able to see that the rabbit was exposing his most vulnerable side of him. He dropped to his knees and started sobbing in front of the tree. Just like that same day. Casey was speechless at what happened. Jack's been through everything she's been through. Casey sat down next to him and gave him a hug. "I know how you feel. To be deceived by the ones you trust the most.". The bunny wiped his tears and broke the hug. "Dad was also the one who taught me all this. He taught me every survival tip in the book and even showed me how to go sledding on a log. I got so hurt that someone so close to me betrayed me that...I actually jumped from a tree. I didn't want to live on.", the bunny said. Casey was shocked at what he tried to do. She was also guilty of trying to end her life, but it scared her to see Jack end up like this. "But somehow, I still survived. Not just from that, but from everything. I guess I just wasn't ready to quit.". There was an awkward silence for a moment. The vixen couldn't wrap her head around the fact that she thought HE would be someone to betray her. Even though some of the mammals that ditched her got ditched themselves before, Jack seemed different. Whenever Casey looked at him, she didn't see a stranger. She saw a mirror. She saw herself. "Anyway, um we should be getting closer to the flat. I grew up in Tundratown so I know this place pretty well. Let's go. Before it gets dark.", Jack said to break the ice. The two started walking again. Getting closer to the flat and getting closer to death.
