Chapter Twenty: A Trustworthy Voice
Casey looked at the small clock on the side table. 2:15. Only forty-five minutes before the devil's hour. Casey didn't really believe that there were any ghosts and agreed with the rest that it was a murder. She couldn't sleep one bit. It wasn't because of the case, it was because of her. Society used the term ghosts as an excuse for anything they're afraid of. They were afraid of this flat, so they called it haunted and slept outside. If they saw Casey's dark side, they might even label her as possessed. Jack was sleeping on the top of the bunk bed while Casey's was at the bottom. So since she couldn't sit on the top bed and think like she did in her own apartment, she got out of her bed and sat down on the floor. Casey began to wonder about her ability again. Even though her job and Nick's new friends accepted her, what about the rest of society? Would they trust her as a spy? Or would they think she's part of every crime for no reason at all? Will they treat her right? Or will they hate her because of that? Do they really trust foxes? Do they really trust her? Would they help her when she needed them the most? Or will they ditch her like everyone else did her entire life? Is there anyone in this big world she can trust? These questions kept whirling around in the vixen's head. She still felt rejected, like an alien. A savage. Something that society hates and will never accept. She's a fox. Not only that, she's a savage fox. Two of the worst things mammals hate mixed into one. The only thing that made was a mistake. She was a mistake. "I'm a monster. I don't belong here.". "What do you mean by monster?", a voice said.
"The vixen turned around to see the grey bunny behind her. Jack had been awake this entire time when she thought he was asleep. "Aren't you supposed to be sleeping?", she said. Casey didn't want this guy's fake sympathy to start. All males are the same and he was merely acting like they always do. Yet, something in her mind told her to tell him what she thought. No! I'm not gonna tell this guy anything. My mouth is closed. Jack shook his head. "Can't sleep. Memories keep bugging me. How about you?", he asked. "Same here.", Casey blurted out. STUPID! WHY'D YOU SAY THAT! She didn't know why she just blurted it out to him since she's usually good at concealing her feelings from others, especially guys. But Jack had a different vibe to him. His voice was gentle like any other male's, but it sounded real. Like he was actually concerned. "Casey?", he said. The vixen didn't realize how long she spent staring into space and immediately snapped back to Earth. "S-sorry. Zoned out for a moment.", she responded. "It's okay.". The bunny sat down next to the vixen and neither of them spoke for a while. "Do you wanna talk about it?", he asked. Casey thought for a moment. She was never quick to tell anyone anything before. Why was she so comfortable now? She barely even knew this guy! But, if I told him this much, I guess it'd be nice to let it out. "Actually, yeah. I guess I'm just...scared.", She managed to say. "Scared? About what?".
"About society. What they'll think about me. They hate foxes enough. Now they have a fox as a cop and a savage fox as a spy."
"Savage fox?"
"Yeah. It's a little thing I was born with. I wasn't fully developed, so I can turn into a savage fox like in the Stone Age and still think the same, but I'd still look like a wild animal.". The bunny still looked confused so Casey told him to watch as she got on all fours and turned into her savage self. Her teeth gleamed in the faint amount of light showing as she growled, her eyes went from icy blue to golden yellow. Her red fur glowed in the moonlight as she revealed her true side to the bunny. Jack watched in shock. His mouth was open the entire time. Casey didn't want to scare him, so she turned back normal. "I learned to control it over the years.", she started saying as she sat back down. "But sometimes, I can't help it. When I get really mad, it starts taking over me. I have no control left.". Casey looked at Jack, expecting a face of horror and fright, but instead, he didn't look the slightest bit scared at all. His face seemed more sympathetic than scared. It was as if he didn't mind her being this way at all. "Did you ever get bullied for this?", he asked. "Of course I did! Who wouldn't?", she said a little too loud and caused the bunny to flinch a little bit, but then he calmed down and so did she. "Sorry. It's just...I'm tired of it. I never really told anyone this much. A few tiny facts to Judy and some larger ones to Nick. I'm not really used to telling anyone things like this, so sometimes I lose it.", she responded. "No, it's okay. Bottled emotions can be really strong when you let them out. Just tell me what you feel comfortable telling me. I won't judge.", Jack said. Usually, Casey never trusted a guy when he said this, but she had the feeling that Jack wasn't going to lie to her. "They all hated me. Just because of this. They said I was a was a monster. That I was a mistake and didn't belong here. I guess I just slowly started believing it. So many mammals said the same thing that I slowly started thinking it was real. They said I wasn't talented, that I couldn't do anything. They hated my art, my singing, and anything else I'd do. They all used me whenever they needed me and then ditched me when I needed them the most. Especially the guys. With the exception of Nick, his friends, and my dad, every guy I met would use me. That's also why I was so rude and sarcastic to you. I just thought you were acting to be nice.". Casey expected Jack to ask her why she was telling him this since if she ever trusted a guy once, that's what they'd ask and then get mad at her for "accusing them as liers". Instead, Jack said something else. "Well, I know how you feel. I was an orphan since my birth and got adopted by a cougar family. I didn't really know that many bunnies and got teased for being the shy weirdo at school. The students there started spreading rumors that I was a savage and wanted to kill the bunnies. Since out of my two brothers and mom, my dad was the only one that accepted me despite being an adopted bunny, and I obviously told him this. He told me that it was actually my fault. I was confused at first, but then he explained how it wouldn't really matter what others say unless you let it matter. You see, if you go on in life letting them affect you on the inside, then it'd be your fault you're letting it happen. Just act like nothing happened at all and have someone to share your feelings to when you need it. It's hard, but you're a strong girl. If you went by acting all happy on the outside even though all of this was going inside you, then you're strong enough to not let it get to you on the inside.", Jack said. "Well, it's getting pretty late and you should go to sleep.", the rabbit said as he climbed back up to his bunker. "Night Wilde.". Casey went to her bed and laid down. For some reason, she believed Jack. She didn't know why, but she just did. Maybe it was the gentle tone he spoke in. Maybe his pale, blue eyes that told only the truth. All she knew, is that maybe she found someone to trust. She wasn't completely sure yet since it's only been a few hours, but maybe it was true. "Night Savage.", the vixen said as she dozed off to sleep. Unfortunately, while the two were getting some shut-eye, a dart had hit both of them. Before either of them could even feel it, the two get affected by the sleeping dart's poison. That allowed the mammals to get them through the open window. The "ghosts" had taken them to the prison. Where they were going to soon meet their doom.
