Chapter 1: New Meetings and New Friends

In a hidden meeting place somewhere...

"You called for us, Ursa?"

Two boys and one girl stood attentively before Ursa Major, a tall and imposing woman who was usually the spokesperson for Sun and Moon. "Yes. We have another mission for you."

"What will we be doing this time?" Gemini inquired eagerly. "I see that I'm here, so perhaps it's something sneaky?"

Ursa smiled. "In a way. For this mission, you must go undercover at-" she checked the IDs in her hand- "-Starshine Academy. Attending there is a boy named Taurus. We've been looking into his data and it says that he could be an extremely powerful individual, although we do not know his ability. Please find him and bring him to us, whatever means possible. It will be very, very bad if someone finds him before us."

"I guess that's why I'm here," Virgo muttered.

"So we'll be sneaking in?" Aquarius confirmed.

"Correct. Capricorn has already forged Student IDs for you so you should be able to blend in well enough." Ursa passed the IDs to them. "We're trusting you with this. And remember-do not let others fool you. Stay in character."

Taurus POV

"Taurus!" I turned around and smiled when I saw Leo behind me, grinning. "Hey Leo."

"Hey yourself!" He frowned when he saw my long ponytail. "I thought you cut it?"

I smiled sheepishly. "It grows fast, what can I say?"

"Oh yeah, and did you hear? We've got three new transfer students attending as of today!" Leo said excitedly. "Word is that they're lookers, too."

"You know I'm not into that kind of stuff. Besides, don't you already have a horde of girls following you 24/7?"

Leo sighed. "Geez, man, aren't you even the least bit interested? They're new. And they came in the middle of the school year. Plus I hear one of them is a child prodigy!"

"All right, we can check them out during break, okay?" I said. "Now hurry, we'll both be late to class!"

"Fine, fine," Leo said, grinning. "See ya later."

"Bye." I entered the classroom and took a seat at the back of the class, as usual.

I wonder... who are the new people really?

Aquarius POV

"Okay, guys, because we're attending school, unfortunately we'll be split for most of the day," I said. "There's no picture of him, but Ursa said he has long brown hair and gold eyes. That shouldn't be that difficult."

Gemini flipped her hair and winked. "Got it! Just leave it to me!"

"Hey, I can do things too," Virgo protested.

"Stop arguing already and get to class," I said, rubbing my temples. "Or we'll be late."

"'Kay! Bye!"

"See you later."

Once they'd left, I took a moment to think over what we were supposed to do. I was wearing a relatively casual outfit-a white button-down shirt, black tie and gray pants-but I was also armed with a bunch of secret weapons.

If what Ursa told us is true, I reflected, pushing open the door, I wonder. Will his ice be like mine?

I took a seat and opened the school handbook, skimming through it just for the sake of politeness. It wouldn't be good manners to destroy the school.

Once I finished skimming, I lifted my head and looked around briefly. Nobody in this class matches the description. I guess that means he's not in this class-Wait. My gaze stopped on a brown-haired girl in the back. Her long bangs covered her eyes, but from what I could see sitting down her long ponytail almost touched the ground. Could she be related to who we're looking for...?

Worth checking out. I mean, not just anybody has hair that long.

I got up, glancing to make sure I still had time-five minutes, good-then carefully made my way over to the girl. "Excuse me," I said, as politely as I could, leaning casually against the empty seat next to her. She twitched slightly in surprise then looked up-enough for her long bangs to fall aside to reveal her eyes.

I caught my breath as my cold blue eyes met warm gold ones. In that moment several things passed through my mind at once. 1. She was not a girl but in fact a male. 2. He was the person we were looking for and 3. I knew him.

"Do you need anything?" He asked.

I regained my composure. Focus, Aquarius! "No. I was just wondering, why is your hair so long?"

He laughed quietly. "My hair grows really quickly. I guess I can't be bothered with cutting it." He stopped. "Oh, I'm sorry." To my surprise he extended a hand. "My name's Taurus, what's yours?"

I took it. "Aquarius. I'm one of the new transfer students here."

I saw his eyes widen just a bit. "Oh." A pause. "Did you perhaps... think I was a girl?"

Caught off guard, I blinked. "...Yes. Sorry if that offended you."

Taurus smiled. "That's alright. People think that all the time. Anyway," he looked up at the clock. "Class is starting soon. Maybe we could talk later? My friend Leo is pretty interested in you guys."

"Sure," I agreed. It'll certainly be easier if we're friends to convince him to come with us... "We can have lunch together."

"Okay then." Taurus said, letting his bangs cover his eyes again. "See you at lunch."

Taurus POV

When I sat down at my usual place in the classroom, I definitely wasn't expecting that to happen to me.

I was just kind of in my own little world, thinking of what I should cook for dinner, when a voice interrupted my thoughts. "Excuse me?"

When I looked up I saw, quite literally, the most beautiful person I had ever seen, leaning casually against the empty desk. He was dressed neatly enough, but I saw the small flipping vertigo expression in his eyes. So he thought I was a girl... "Do you need anything?" I asked.

He responded with a polite smile. "No. I was just wondering, why is your hair so long?"

I laughed softly. "My hair grows really quickly. I guess I can't be bothered with cutting it." Right, introductions... "Oh, I'm sorry." I held out a hand. "My name's Taurus, what's yours?"

He took it. "Aquarius. I'm one of the new transfer students here." My eyes widened. So I guess Leo wasn't lying when he said that the new students were good-looking...! "Oh." I thought back to the flipping vertigo in his eyes earlier. "Did you perhaps... think I was a girl."

Aquarius blinked. "... Yes. Sorry if that offended you."

Thought so. I smiled. "That's alright. People think that all the time." I looked at the clock. Class was going to start soon. "Class is starting soon. Maybe we could talk later? My friend Leo is pretty interested in you guys."

To my surprise I felt kind of... happy when he agreed. "Sure. We can have lunch together."

"Okay then," I said, letting another soft smile slip onto my face. "See you at lunch."

Only once Aquarius had left I realized that I had the feeling that we had met before.

Nobody POV

"Virgo, you're in this class too?"

Virgo waved and sat down next to Aquarius. "Yep. You're a lot faster than I thought you'd be. Is our target in this room?"

"Keep it down. Yes, he's here. I just talked to him."

Virgo's eyes widened. "That was fast. Which one?" Aquarius pointed to Taurus and Virgo raised an eyebrow. "Wow. Ursa wasn't kidding when she said 'long hair'."

The teacher entered, but the two boys continued their conversation quietly. "Does he seem weird to you?"

"No," Aquarius said, glancing over at him. "Not much of a talker. Kind of quiet."

"Huh. Well, I'll try controlling him really quick." Virgo narrowed his eyes and they glowed green for a minute as he focused his ability on Taurus.

To their shock there was a loud electric shock as his power seemingly bounced off. Of course, only they were able to see it. Taurus seemed totally fine. "What?" Virgo muttered. "Impossible."

Aquarius narrowed his eyes. "It must be his electrical power," he realized. "It must be generating a electrical field around him somehow, which is why you can't control him."

"Okay, that's not good," Virgo whispered back. "If I can't control him how are we supposed to meet?"

"Don't worry, I already invited him to lunch," Aquarius said smugly. "Just leave it to me."

At Lunch...

Nobody POV

"What the hell, man? That's so not fair!" Leo exclaimed at lunch. True to his word, Aquarius had met up with them after the last class. "How the heck did you already snag one of the transfer students?"

Taurus lifted his shoulders up and down a little. "Luck, I suppose."

Aquarius put out a hand, smiling courteously. "Hello. I'm Aquarius. I hear you're Leo, correct?"

Leo shook his hand. "C-correct."

"I brought my friends along," Aquarius said, turning towards Gemini and Virgo, who waved and smiled. "Hope you don't mind."

"Of course not!" Leo waved us to a seat. "I got us good seats today. Not because I knew you would be stopping by, but because we usually sit in good seats anyway. One of the perks of having a girl squad following you around 24/7, I guess."

"Oh, so you're well-connected too!" Gemini said, beaming. "We can bond over that!"

"Not another Gemini, please," Virgo muttered. "One is more than enough."

"What the hell do you mean?!"

Aquarius noted that Taurus didn't participate in their lively chatter. Compared to Leo, who practically shone like the sun, he was kind of like an elegant shadow. I wonder why they're friends. And does he really have abilities? He hasn't shown any signs of it so far. Aside from his unusually long hair there's nothing... abnormal... about him at all.

"Is something the matter?" Taurus asked suddenly. Aquarius realized he'd been staring. "Sorry, just thinking about some things."

"So, what school did you transfer from?" Leo asked.

"Middlewick High," Aquarius lied smoothly. "It's only a couple of days' drive away from here."

"It took forever to move all my things!" Gemini wailed. "And I lost one of my shampoos too!"

"The change must've been sudden," Taurus said quietly.

"It was," Virgo said. "But you guys seem nice. I think we'll like it here."

"I hope you do!" Leo said brightly. "Just a warning, though, when you three look that good you can't expect not to be left alone."

"We'll just ward them off," Aquarius said, waving a careless hand. "I don't see how you could possibly deal with that-" he gestured towards the giggling mob of girls unsubtly looking their way- "-every single day. I'd lose my mind."

Gemini scoffed. "Of course you would, Mr. Ice King. I'm used to it." she flipped her hair for emphasis.

"Honestly..." Virgo sighed. "You are such a spoiled brat sometimes..."

"EXCUSE ME?!" Gemini raged.

"Don't worry," Aquarius reassured Leo. "This happens a lot. You'd be surprised." Again he glanced at Taurus, who was still silently eating.

"Don't worry about my buddy here," Leo said, patting Taurus's back. "He's not much of a speaker on the outside. You just gotta break through his outer shell."

"Leo," Taurus said. "I don't have a shell."

"Right, right."

Interesting, Aquarius thought. He's kind of like... me. But still we need to focus. The sooner we get him to the facility the better. It's too dangerous.

"Mr. Aquarius?"

Aquarius realized that he'd been lost in thought yet again. "Ah, sorry. Did I miss something?"

"Nope!" Leo chirped. "We've got class soon, but-"

"Great." Aquarius turned to Taurus. "Meet me after school in the courtyard. And don't let anyone follow you."

"Why?" Taurus asked.

"Private matters," Aquarius replied.

Gemini wiggled her eyebrows. "Oh-ho-ho! Our ice king's puttin' on his charm!"

"Shut up," Aquarius growled. "Or you know what will happen the second we're out of sight."

She held up her hands. "Shutting, shutting. Sometimes it's so hard being the only girl in the group, at least for right now..."

"Can I at least accompany you?" Leo asked. "It's not that I don't trust you, but it's a friend thing."

"I'd like to say yes, but no," Aquarius said. "Well? Is that a yes?"

Taurus said nothing for a few more minutes. Then he stood up. "I'll see you after school, then."

Aquarius watched him go with a small smirk on his face. Well. That was easier than expected.

After school, in the courtyard...

(apologies for all the time skips)

"So, what do you want to talk about, Mr. Aquarius?" Taurus asked. They were seated in the courtyard.

"First, you can drop the 'Mr.'," Aquarius said. "Second, it's a bit hard to explain. It'll be easier if I could just show you. Can you promise not to scream?"

Taurus nodded.

"Okay then." Aquarius stood up and took a deep breath. The security cameras are off. I contacted Capricorn earlier about it. Gemini and Virgo are standing watch outside the gates in case there's any trouble, and also conveniently distracting Leo. Guess I'll go with ice.

Right before he could summon his ice, a blurred shadow shot from the trees, knife in one hand, aiming for his throat.
