Chapter 39
Uo yelped in disgust as she stepped in a mud hole. Grunting, she pulled her foot out and started wiping the dirt off her shoes.
Uo, Tohru and Yuki went to go and look for Kyo, who ran into the forest after his transformation, but haven't had any luck in finding him. They followed as much of his tracks as possible but the snow covered most of his footprints. Shigure was out in his car looking for Kyo as well.
"What if he's cold out there?" Tohru mumbled to herself. "Or what if he got hurt?"
"I'm sure he's okay, Miss Honda." Yuki reassured her.
"Oh I can't help but worry." Tohru fretted. "Remember the last time he.. Changed?"
Yuki nodded knowing the event that occurred only a few months ago.
"So... What did happen?" Uo asked walking beside them and over hearing their conversation.
"Well, Akito came to the house again." Tohru started. "It was raining. He knew I found out about the curse and had a suspicion about me ever since I met him. Then it happened. He pulled off Kyo's bracelet and..." Her voice faltered.
"Go on, Miss Honda." Yuki encouraged.
She smiled at him and continued. "... And he transformed. Akito wanted to prove that he couldn't be loved. That I couldn't break his curse. No one can. Eventually I found the courage to go after him. So did Yuki. When we found him... We fought a little then I confessed.."
Uo glanced at Yuki who walked next to Tohru tensed.
Yeah it is kinda awkward hearing your girlfriend talk about a guy she used to like.
"And everything was alright after that." Tohru finished. "Well sorta... I did go visit Akito after that."
Uo stopped and looked at her friend surprised. "The hell would you do that for?"
"I thought I could talk and reason to him about the Sohma's curse." Tohru shook her head in dismay. "There was some... Complications. But I think I was able to change his mind about erasing my memory."
"The good thing now is that it was over." Yuki chimed in. "Our main focus now is to look for Kyo."
"We're not making any progress though." Uo muttered.
The three friends kept walking through the forest in silence. Uo looked around, desperate to find Kyo as soon as possible. Infront of her Yuki and Tohru held hands and talking quietly to each other. As she stared at them, she suddenly felt a longing inside her chest. Watching her best friend happy with someone made her realize that she felt something missing.
Could Kyo be that person she's missing in her life?
"Look!" Yuki exclaimed.
Uo abrubtly backed out of her thoughts and jogged to where Yuki and Tohru stood. As she caught up to them she saw that the forest opened up into a flat land with a river flowing beside it. As she gazed around she inhaled sharply and stopped at a group of rocks a few feet from the water. There, a creature sat on the highest boulder.
That creature was Kyo.
"Kyo!" Uo whispered.
Tohru placed a hand on her shoulder. "I think you should go approach him. Me and Yuki will stay here and come and help you in case something goes wrong."
"Are you sure?" I shook my head. "I don't think he would want to see me."
"I'm sure he does." Yuki insisted. "He needs you the most right now."
Uo nodded and took a deep breath. She slowly walked towards the group of rocks where Kyo sat alone. His head was bent into his arms and Uo could hear his shallow breathing from where she stood a few feet from him. Uo felt her heart beat inside of her and she couldn't stop shaking.
Don't be afraid... I can't be afraid...
Uo tried to summon up the courage to yell out his name but no sound came out of her mouth.
He doesn't deserve to be loved!
Akito's words rang inside her head and Uo felt a pang of anger towards the dark haired Sohma.
That's not true!
"Kyo!" Uo finally called out, her voice cracking with fear.
Kyo's head snapped backwards in surprise and faced her. His dark eyes full with despair and anger. Teeth baring, Uo could hear a growl forming inside his throat.
Doesn't he remember me?
"Kyo." She said softly. "Its me. Arisa Uotani? Yankee?"
He got up from the boulder and took a step towards her, growling.
"Please, please come back Kyo." Uo begged. "I know there's more to you than just your curse."
"WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT MY CURSE?" His voice roared. "YOU'RE AFRAID! I CAN SEE IT IN YOUR EYES! YOUR AFRAID OF ME! LIKE EVERYONE ELSE WAS!"
Uo closed her eyes as she felt tears swelling. "Its true. I was afraid Kyo." She quietly sobbed. Uo stared up into his eyes. "I may not know about your curse as much as you do Kyo but that doesn't change the way I view you."
"SHUT UP!" Kyo lunged forward and tackled Uo to the ground. She yelped in surprise and fell backwards with a painful grunt.
"Uo!" She turned around to see Tohru and Yuki running towards her.
"No!" She shouted. "Go back! I can do this..!"
As if they understood what her purpose was they nodded and turned around.
Uo got up from the ground and cried out as she felt a strong pain on her side. She looked down to see a gash through her shirt where blood seeped through.
Tears ran down her face and she faced Kyo. He had his back face her and he seemed to be staring at the river.
I have to try! I have to let him see!
"Kyo." Her voice croaked. "Please. Listen to me!"
His ear flicked but he kept his eyes locked at the river as if he was waiting for the right moment to jump.
This was the moment. This was the moment when she would tell him. Because he needs to know.
"Kyo..." Uo called out to him. "Please look at me.."
She felt him hesitate and he finally turned to look at her.
Uo took a deep breath and said words that Kyo thought he would never hear from her. "Kyo, I love you."
She heard him gasp. Suddenly his body began to steam and shrink. Uo watched as Kyo turned from an orange monster into his usual self. He was shirtless but still had his pants, thankfully.
He took a step towards Uo and collapsed on his knees in exhaustion. Uo ran towards him and tackled him into a hug.
"Don't leave like that again, orange top." She cried.
She felt his arms wrap around her and held her tight. "You really meant it?"
She looked at him. "Yes, Kyo I do love you. I finally realize that now."
Kyo's eyes shined with happiness. "Well, then in that case." He leaned forward and kissed Uo then pulled back. "I love you too."
Uo stared into his eyes and leaned forward until their lips touched. Kyo cupped his hands around her kneck to deep end the kiss. Uo felt a surge of affection towards Kyo. The kiss they were sharing was different compared to the two they shared before. It was much more stronger.
Uo pulled away and rested her head on his shoulder holding him close to her. Kyo kissed her neck making her shiver in delight.
"I'm not gonna leave you again, Yankee." He whispered in her ear.
Uo snuggled closer to him in response and smiled to herself. "I know."
