Gemini

Seth and Asa Craven were the sons of a duke. Being twins, they looked exactly alike and enjoyed messing with other people. You were the favourite target. You were the daughter of one of the servants, and the duke had suggested you be a playmate for his sons, unaware of what they did to you.

They would pull your hair and tear your dress sometimes. They would also force you to play a game of figuring out who was who. Every time you got it wrong you would get pinched. Your mother learned of your predicament and offered to find a job elsewhere. You begged her not to since jobs were difficult to come by and also, Duke Craven was one of the few who allowed his servants to get married.

You had put up with the twins, but you never said anything to Duke Craven as you feared your mother's job would be taken from her. You were seventeen now. Since you turned fourteen, you were able to officially apply for a job at the manor. This allowed you to stay away from the twins. The twins, on the other hand, didn't like this though. You never fought back or quit, and they wanted to see how far they could push you.

During errands, they would get you into trouble, and you hated it more than ever. Finally, you had enough when your own mother got involved. It was when both of the twins were harassing you near the stables.

"Why did you do hair up like this F/n?" Seth asks taking a lock of your hair. "Is it a man hmm?"

"How strange, brother dearest. I don't recall this one having any lovers, much less few friends," Asa adds mocking you. It was true that you didn't have friends because the brothers scared them away. You step away from them but both of them circle you until Seth grabs your arm. You rip your arm away from him. This causes you to lose balance and accidentally hit one of the horses.

Your mother was walking by and saw the ordeal. She didn't know when to step in since technically the brothers were her employers. When she says you back away into the horse did she rush in?

You had fallen down and the horse was kicking his feet. You were about to get trampled. You closed your eyes in fear, but instead of feeling the impact of the hooves, you heard a scream. You open your eyes and see your mother. The horse had run off. Seth calls for help, and you scream for your mother.

At a hospital, you don't look at the twins. Your face is wet from the tears you shed. Duke Craven had come, and you stood up and bowed.

"I heard what happened F/n," he says patting your shoulders. "I'll pay for your mother's hospital fees since you two have been one of my most loyal servants."

"...Thank you."

"What exactly happened though. The horses are usually tame." You look at the twins who actually appear to be guilty.

"I was talking Seth and Asa. I accidentally miss stepped and hit one of the horses. I apologize." Both of them looked at you shocked. The brothers did have some part in your mother's accident but so did you. Involving them in this would lead to more problems that you didn't want to deal with. A doctor came out, and you rush up to them. "How is Mother? Is she fine?"

"Your mother will live, but from the waist down, she is paralyzed."

"What?" you try to go inside, but the doctor prevented you.

"I'm sorry." The doctor says. "She is sleeping. You can visit her tomorrow." Duke Craven leaves you with the twins as he has to discuss hospital fees. Once gone, the twins look at you.

"F/n," they say in unison.

"I don't want to hear it," you mumble. Seth tries to step closer, but you step back. "None of this would of happen if I had just agreed with my mom about leaving your manor." You look up at the twins. "You guys did what you did because you wanted to see how long it would take until I quit right? When my mom gets released from the hospital, I am quitting my job and taking her away from here." You walk past the twins ignoring their apologetic stares.

Your mother was released, and you left with her after receiving your final pay. Unfortunately though, after a month, your mother had died due to her injuries. A year has passed since, and you had gotten married. Your employers were happy for you as the person you married was a stable boy of the family but couldn't keep you as they were a household that didn't allow servants to be married.

(This was a common occurrence in the olden days since, households want servants who can serve for life. Servants who had families of their own naturally would put their own families first. Women usually stopped working after marriage as well.)

"F/n, do you think your previous employer would hire us?" your husband asks. You two were struggling to find jobs, and your husband knew how you disliked the twins but times are tough.

"We should go ask." The two of you set off the Craven household. As for the twins, they felt guilty as to what happened. They stopped playing tricks on servants. Had your mother not shown up to save you, you could have been injured. They didn't like that. Their father had learned of what actually happened and was disappointed in his sons. The two were reading in their library when their father came in.

"Seth, Asa." Both boys look up. "We have two new servants working with us. Or should I say one." Both look at their father confused.

"F/n has decided to come work here again. This time with her husband. I am expecting to hear that you two will treat them respectfully. Are we clear?"

"Crystal," they say in unison. You and your husband was shown to your room and started unpacking.

"If you feel that is too much for us, we can leave. You just need to tell me." You smile at your husband.

"It is fine Geoffrey (I was feelin' fancy). It has been a year. They probably found a new target." Geoffrey looks at you worried, and you hug him. "I also have you. So I know we are fine." he kisses your forehead and the two of you do your respective jobs at the manor.

You had been careful and did your best to avoid being in the presence of the twins but one day, you ran into them when you were hanging some laundry.

"F/n?" you hear them ask in unison. You turn and face them smiling politely. You may hate them, but they are still your employers.

"Hello. Seth. Asa." You nod to both of them.

"I heard you got married," Seth says. You nod.

"That I did."

"How is your mother?" Asa asks. You look down.

"She died a month after release."

"We're sorry," they say after a moment of silence.

"It is fine. Time heals doesn't it?" You finish hanging the last articles of clothes and dismiss yourself. The brothers still felt guilty. They decided to make it up to you and so they kept on coming after you. They wanted to be free of this guilt.

They kept on giving you random things. Helping you with work even when you declined. Your husband was starting to get suspicious of their behaviour and talked to you about it.

"I don't like how they are treating you. I mean it is more ideal than them being rude but this doesn't feel right."

"I know. I don't understand why though."

"Should we leave?"

"Geoffrey. What about our jobs? Not many households take in married servants."

"I know that. Look, after I noticed the behaviour of those two, I went job hunting during my breaks. I found a household who will allow us to work there."

"What do we now then?"

"I'll talk to Duke Craven about it. I don't think he'll mind."

"Okay then." You and your husband decided to leave the Craven household. Unbeknownst to you two, the brothers were listening. They were going to give a more formal apology when they heard the discussion. They didn't care if your husband left, but you? You needed to stay. So they could show they felt sorry for their actions.

Your husband had just discussed leaving the household and Duke Craven agreed. Duke Craven, that day had to go to the bank and asked Geoffrey to take him there. They didn't come home. You were growing worried. An officer came in and requested the presence of Asa and Seth. They also requested you.

"I am sorry but, Duke Craven and Geoffrey Lanyon had died in a coach crash upon impact." Your mind went blank. You first lost your mother and now your own husband. It was too much. You begin crying wishing this all to be a dream.

A funeral service was held and shortly afterwards, you were with the twins.

"What do you plan on doing F/n?" Seth asks, handing you a teacup.

"I am thinking of getting employment elsewhere," you say taking a sip.

"But why though?" Asa asks. "You could stay here and work."

"The only reason why I came back was that my husband and I needed employment. Before he died, he found employment for us and I am planning on going there." The brothers look at each other before turning to you. You felt sleepy all of sudden. You dropped the teacup. You see the brothers looking at you apologetically through your blurry vision.

"We're sorry," they say in unison. You go unconscious Both brothers walk up to your body.

"Will she forgive us, brother?" Seth asks taking a lock of your hair.

"Who knows," Asa replies. He gently caresses your cheek. "But don't worry brother." He looks to his brother. Seth nods.

"She will understand we are sorry," they say in unison as they look lovingly at your body.
