Broken
Sinbad staggered up the steps to his room.
There was only one thing that could save him from the spell Ziniba and the Rebel Vks had cast on the school.
He pushed his door opened and nearly collapsed in the safety he felt but he knew it wouldn't last. He ran over to his dresser and began to rip out drawers.
"Where is it? Where is it?" he mumbled in a panic.
After he didn't find what he was looking for he pulled himself over to his bed and began to search there. It wasn't there either.
He began to tear the drawers out of his desk, scattering his pencils, notebooks, and other things all over the room. Finally, his hand closed around something small attached to a leather thong. A seashell. It was the one that had held Ariel's, his mother, voice when she had turned into a human. It was broken because someone had broken it to release her voice. She had had some magicians place an anti-spell on it and she gave it to Sinbad when he left for school. He used to wear it all the time but then stopped when he felt he was missing out on the magic of the school.
He pulled it out and tied the thong securely around his neck.
He closed his eyes and took a deep sigh of relief as the magic that threatened to take over fleed away from his mind.
He opened his eyes and set his jaw.
He was the only one that could save Auradon now.
**
The next day Ziniba sat at her desk in her room. She had turned the desk around so that her back was to the wall in case anyone would try to sneak up on her.
Genevieve was still in her bed sleeping. The magic had drained her energy. Ziniba had noticed that the magic had drained everyone's energy and they hadn't stayed at the party long.
Ziniba had been writing down plans for the day but she had stopped and was staring at her hands. They were slowly changing back and forth between lion paws and normal hands. She didn't know what was happening so she just watched. It wasn't painful, Ned had put something in the potion thingy that had made it so that changing wouldn't be painful, just a little itchy.
There was a knock at the door. Ziniba got up and opened the door and peeked out to see who it was. She saw it was Ned so she walked out into the hall and closed the door behind her so that they wouldn't wake Genevieve if they talked.
"Yeah?" Ziniba asked Ned.
"The magic is working. Ben has invited Lou back to Auradon without a second thought to my request."
Ziniba nodded.
"Perfect."
Ned continued "And the call with our parents is scheduled for half an hour."
"Great," Ziniba said. Then as a second thought added "What is the magic doing to everyone? I mean, what is everyone acting like?"
"They're..." Ned considered, "Well, they're not really thinking anything through. They're just going with instincts. At least the people I've seen. Most are still in bed. They're kind of like zombies with personalities."
"Hm." Ziniba thought about this for a moment. "Alright... see you in half an hour."
Ned nodded and Ziniba started to go back into her room but Ned stopped her.
"Ziniba... are we... are we doing the right thing?"
Ziniba looked at him in surprise.
"What do you mean?"
"I mean, well... Oh, forget it."
Ned turned and walked away.
Ziniba stared after him for a bit then went back to her room.
**
A half-hour later Ned and Ziniba sat in front of a computer.
"Try clicking that," Ned said.
Ziniba clicked it.
They waited for a moment and then the face call connected.
The first thing they saw was the upside-down image of Ziniba and Ned's dads, Banzai and Scar.
"Wazzup?" Banzai asked with his hyena grin that he never lost despite being turned human. "How 'ja learn ta fly?"
"Um, dad, flip the screen over," Ned asked.
Banzai did as Ned asked and frowned.
"I liket it betta when you wazz flyin'."
Banzai had black skin, because he was African, and black, long, curly hair that he kept in greasy dreadlocks around his head. His clothes looked too big for him and looked like he had slept in them, which he probably did. His brown-yellow eyes hinted at his K-9 background. He had been one of the more sense-able hyenas but he had gone around the bend just a bit because of being turned into a human and then thrust onto the Isle.
Ned laughed.
"Yeah, I wish we could fly. That'd be cool."
"Hey! Do ya guys have animal ears?"
"Yes, Uncle Banzai," Ziniba answered, "Ned created this potion that kind of pulled our heritage into our looks."
"Wierd! I love it! Great job, Ned!" Zininba and Ned guessed that he didn't actually understand.
"Hi, dad," Ziniba said to her father.
Scar looked up.
Scar had black skin and black hair like Banzai, for he too was African. But unlike Banzai he kept his hair neatly combed back in a ponytail and had a pointed black beard. His trademark scar on his left eye marred his handsome and stoic features and made his green eyes look almost cruel. And almost to finish the look he had a black cane with a lion's head engraved on top. He wore a black suit and a black tie. In Ziniba's opinion, he looked like a college professor. In Ned's opinion, he looked like he was part of the Mafia and he just came from the funeral of a man he "took out". Ziniba never questioned her dad's sanity but Ned guessed that he was almost as insane as Banzai but hid it better.
"Hi, Ziniba. What's the reason for this call?"
Ziniba her hurt. Scar was always one to jump to the point.
"Um, I... I just wanted to tell you that we're going to get the wand soon and... and we'll be able to bring you to-."
"Wayda secont," Banzai interrupted, "Wand? Ya meen da bippoty-boppity-boo one?"
"Um, ya," Ziniba answered.
"So's yer gonna get us a pumpkin carriage?" Banzai asked. He looked confused. "Whyda we need a carriage? Are we goin' to a ball?"
"Uncle Banzai!" Ziniba raised her voice just a bit to catch Banzai's attention and keep it. "No carriage, no balls! The reason we're getting the wand is-."
"No balls? But I alwayz wanted ta go ta one."
Scar placed a hand on Banzai's leg.
"Banzai, please let Ziniba finish."
"But, I wanna-."
"Banzai-."
"But, Scar-!
Scar gave Ned and Ziniba a look that clearly read "I'm surrounded by imbeciles" and "Take me away from this maniac".
"Banzai, please shut up before I snap your neck!" Scar snapped.
Ned's mind wandered back to the mafia idea.
"Sorry," Banzai mumbled.
"Now, Ziniba, please continue." Scar waved his hand like a king telling someone they could talk.
"We're getting the wand to get you, Uncle Banzai, and everyone on the Isle off the Isle," Ziniba continued.
"When will you have it?" Scar asked.
"Maybe a little more than a few hours, actually, we just don't know how off these people are."
Banzai looked curious as to what they meant by "off" but Scar didn't seem to care.
"And then where will we go? What will you do?" Scar asked.
"With a little help from you guys and my friends rule Auradon, basking in the glory of evil, and making all those silly princes and princesses pay for dropping us on the Isle."
Scar raise his wickedly scarred left eyebrow in amusement.
"Rule Auradon, bask in the glory of evil, and revenge."
Ziniba and Ned nodded in excitement.
Scar shook his head slowly.
"Just let us go home. The hyenas and I have discussed it and we just want to go home."
Ziniba and Ned looked at their parents in disbelief.
"What!?
Scar nodded.
"We're sick of being humans on a filthy island surrounded by more water than flows in all of Africa in one week. We just want to go home."
"But what about our revenge? What about ruling Auradon? What about-."
"Ziniba," Scar leaned on his cane, "The Hyenas and I have discussed all this. Just let us go home. You can stay if you want but we want to go back to Africa."
"But... revenge..."
"Ziniba, usually the one that gets hurt more in the revenge game is the one trying to get revenge."
Ziniba was speechless.
"Well," Ned said, "We'll do that for you guys. We'll have to discuss if we'll go back with you but we'll definitely make that plan. Um... we should get going... Bye."
Scar nodded and Banzai waived wildly as Ned ended the facetime.
They sat there for a few moments staring at the blank computer screen.
Ned finally broke the silence.
"Your dad... doesn't want revenge."
"He's broken," Ziniba said in a voice that was barely audible. It was clear she was stunned. "He's broken inside."
