Chapter 8: The Day That Wasn't

8:15 am...

Esme sat on the sofa, as she looked at the flames in the fireplace.

"Esme did you want a coffee?"  Allison asked her.

"Hm?"  She turned her gaze to her.

"No. I'm fine."  She spoke softly and looked back to the fire.

"You alright?"  Allison questioned and this time Esme didn't respond.

Allison sighed as she knew Esme went to her own little world and sat back with Luther.

"If you haven't noticed Five is a little-"  Allison whistled as she pointed her finger to her head and moved it around it circles.

Klaus let out a laugh.

"Our little psycho."

"Esme is a little you know. But we still love her."  Klaus gestured over to the sibling that was still looking at the fire.

"He sounded pretty convincing."  Luther told the three.

"What did he even see?"  Allison asked.

"Uhh. Well."  Luther began.

"Apparently we all fought together against whoever was responsible." He pauses for awhile than stood up.

"Oh. So here's the plan."

"Wait. What." They all groaned giving him a look.

"You're hiding something. Come on big boy. Spit it out." Diego gave him a look.

"We all died." He mumbled, drinking his coffee and Esme turned her head his way, paying attention once more.

"What was that?"  Allison asked.

"I said we all die and uh Esme dies before any of us."  Everyone moved their gaze to her with wide eyes.

An umbrella fell off of the hook and opened up, making Klaus let out a scream.

They all grouped up near the bar as they started to ask Luther questions.

"Is it just us or?"  Diego asked.

"No. It's everyone."  Luther confirmed.

"And what about Esme?"  He questioned.

"We don't know when it's supposed to happen."  He shrugged and Diego looked over to her, who was sipping on her coffee.

"Outside the house everyone died."  Luther continued to discuss it.

"Hey."  Vanya walked in with a man behind her.

"What's going on?"  Vanya questioned.

"It's a family matter."  Allison told her and Esme gave her a look.

"Which you are family. So you should be part of it."  Esme tried to clear it up.

"No. It's ok Esme."  Vanya gave her a small smile than turned to the other family members.

"You couldn't bother to include me."

"No. It's not like that. We were-"  Vanya cut Luther off.

"Vanya Wait."  Allison went after her as Esme looked to the man, making eye contact with him.

She sent him a smile and a wave and he smiled back to her.

"I used to think it was dad's fault.  But it turns out you're the assholes."  Vanya hissed to all of them before walking out.

Esme gasped at her statement, she always tried to make Vanya feel like part of the family. She always tried to put everyone else first before her.

The man gave them a look before following after Vanya.

"Ouch."  Klaus spoke up while Diego rubbed Esme's arm, reassuring her.

"She didn't mean it."  He told her.

"I'm going after Vanya."  Allison told them.

"No wait.  We need to figure out what causes the apocalypse."  Luther told her.

"Maybe it's the moon. Dad sent me there for a reason right?"  He looked to them and Esme sighed.

"Luther. Not everything is about the moon."

Luther ignored her comment and continued to talk while Klaus began to gag a bit, taking a seat on the sofa.

"Well. I'm going to go after them."  Diego grabbed his jacket.

"Diego Wait. I know you want to avenge your friend."  Luther started.

"She wasn't just some friend!  If I'm going to die. I need to know, I gotta kill those bastards first."

Esme looked between everyone. Klaus was talking to himself, most likely to Ben. She didn't want to butt in.

Luther and Diego continued to argue and she was holding back from telling them all to shut up. Suddenly the doorbell went off.

"I'll get it."  She told them all with a big smile before skipping over to the door.

She opened up the door and before she could say anything, a gun was pointed at her and a bullet was sent through her torso.

She stood there in shock clutching to where the bullet hit her, blood quickly seeping through her shirt.

She could barley comprehend what was going around her, her legs gave out and she fell on the floor as she suddenly felt a sharp pain in her stomach.

The next thing she knew was someone placing her in her lap while they put pressure on her wound.  He had tears in his eyes as he was calling out for help.

Diego.

"Oh my god."  He cried out as his hand started to coat with blood.

"What do we do?"  Luther questioned as Klaus placed his hands over his mouth as they watched the pool of blood begin to cover Esme and Diego.

"Esme. Hey. You're going to be alright."  Diego reassured her as he moved some of her hair away, staining it with her own blood from his hand.

"I don't want to die."  She finally cried out as she looked up at Diego.

"You'll be fine."  His voice trembled as he started to believe she wasn't. His gaze looked down to where his hand was putting pressure, All he could see was blood. So much blood.

"I-I don't wanna die. I don't want to die."  She cried again as her breathing began to go rigid, her gaze turning to look at the ceiling and then nothing.

"Esme.  Esme."  Diego started to cry as he looked into her soulless eyes.

"No."  He whispered as Klaus started to look around hoping to find her, all he saw was Ben.

Ben shook his head as he looked to Klaus, letting him know Esme wasn't there.

Allison had tears sliding down her cheeks as kneeled down, gently closing Esme's eyes. Diego said nothing, didn't move.  He just held onto Esme's body tightly.

No one said anything.

No one moved.

What were they supposed to do?

~~~
"I should have done something." Diego spoke up from the long period of silence.
"There was nothing you could have done." Luther looked to him.
"I could've opened the door." Diego looked to Luther and he began to get angry.
"I could have told her to stop." He stood up.
"I could have told her I would get the door!"
"I could have! I could have! I COULD HAVE!" Tears began to prick in his eyes again as he shook his head.
"It just happened so fast." Klaus whispered before making his way out of the room.
"Diego can you help me with something?" He questioned and Diego followed him.
Since he didn't help Esme. He had to help Klaus. He had to help someone.
"I uh. I should tell Vanya." Allison blinked a few times and all Luther did was nod his head.
Up in the attic Klaus stood up from the chair.
"Woah. Woah." Diego looked at him.
"I think. I think this was a bad idea." He turned to Diego.
"I should have just had one last hit to ease me into it. Like. Shit. After what happened." He pauses and Diego looked down.
"I think maybe the reason why I didn't do it was because I knew how much she hated it when I would do drugs."
They were silent for a bit after that before Klaus got back in the seat.
"Ok. Ok. Hurry up." Klaus trembled a bit as Diego began to tie him up.
Klaus let out a frustrated scream and Diego handed him a bucket.
"What?!" He looked at it.
"Multitask it." Diego shrugged.
"No. Diego."
He began to leave.
"Diego. Get back here. You prick!" Klaus shouted after him, throwing the bucket and moving around, trying to get out. But ended up falling over instead.
"Mom?" Diego questioned as he saw her dusting downstairs.
"Oh. Hello Diego dear."
"How are you...walking around?" He questioned as she walked up to him, seeing her stitch up arm.
"One foot in front of the other. Why? How do you do it?" She laughed.
"Mom. What was the last thing you remember?" He questioned.
"Let's see. March 21st. Sunset. 7:33pm. Room was crescent-"
"Mom that happened over a week ago. Do you remember anything else?"
Her gaze went slightly over his shoulder, looking to Pogo.
"No. I supposed that's odd." She lied, looking back to him.
"The weather is nice. It'll be nice to go to the park." She grabbed his hand gently.
8:02 pm...
Esme's spirit stood in her room. A small smile appeared on her face as she felt peace for once. All the demons and other evil spirits couldn't contact her now.
She felt normal. She finally got her wish of shutting them out even if it means being dead. Of course she would miss Iyla, but he would be alright.
"Esme." She heard a voice behind her, making her question who it was. That wasn't Klaus. Who else could see her?
She turned around seeing Ben.
"Ben?" She looked at him and he smiled.
"Hey sis."
She smiled as she quickly went over to him, wrapping her arms around her, Ben doing the same.
"I've missed you so much. I missed your voice, your hugs." She told him.
"I know. I'm sorry." He apologized to her.
"It's alright. At least you're not alone now." She smiled, pulling away from him.
Before any of them could say anything else...
Time froze
And the clock started to go back.
