Chapter 5
Kobra was practicing shooting when he decided to take a break and sit with me where I was watching B.
"Is Poison okay?" I asked. "He hasn't come out of his room all day."
Kobra sighed. "I think that after turning in Flash's mask last night and the fact that this is the first time to sit and relax, he's just now processing her death. He's taking it pretty hard."
I nodded, brushing some dust off my knee.
"Is there some way I can help him?" I asked.
"Not really," he said. "It was the same when our mom died. He just had to process it alone, that's kind of just how he works."
"That's understandable, people deal with things differently," I said. "How did B handle her mom passing, she's so young."
"There was just a lot of crying and asking for mommy," he said. "It was heartbreaking to watch. I think she's forgotten her already. Or at least starting to forget. She's young, she won't remember her."
Kobra looked over, leaning back against the wall.
"When did you move out to the zones?" He asked. "How did you end up with a killjoy life in this diner with Jet?"
I smiled softly. "This might sound really crazy, but we're actually brothers. Half brothers. Same mom, different dads. Funny how genetics work that way, we don't look anything alike. I took more after our mom, he looks like his dad. We were born out here in the zones."
"No kidding," he muttered. "Yeah, you guys are close but I honestly never would have guessed you two were brothers."
"Most people don't as soon as they see our hair," I said with a small laugh. "We're pretty close, though."
"That's cool, two sets of brothers living together," he said.
I smiled and nodded. B came over, smiling happily as she held her hands up to Kobra. He picked her up, holding her on his lap. She smiled, kicking her feet happily. He looked at his watch and sighed.
"It's almost time for her n-a-p," he said. "I'm gonna take her in to go lay down with Poison. Maybe she'll help him feel better."
"Hopefully, it's hard losing people," I said.
Kobra nodded, carrying B inside. I got up, picking up the cans he was using as target practice before going inside. I set them in a box and sat at the diner booth with Ray, who was quietly listening to the radio. Not much was playing, Dr. D had no news to broadcast. Cherri Cola was rambling on with his poetry.
"How's Kobra's shooting?" Jet asked, keeping his volume low. He must know B was going down for a nap.
"It's getting better," I said.
I glanced over at Gerard's room. It was still bright outside so I couldn't see their shadows but I knew all three of them were in there.
"Is Poison doing okay?" Jet whispered.
I just shrugged, leaning back in my seat.
"We need more supplies now that we've got more people," I said. "We're gonna need to start collecting more food to feed five now. We need to get them masks and blasters as well."
"I have some spare leather, I should have enough to make them both holsters," he said.
"We've been going out a lot. We're gonna need to get some gas as well in the car," I said. "Damn, I should've seen with Bones if he had any blasters. It would've been a lot of carbons but it would have been worth it. We're gonna need to try to trade or get it off some dracs."
"Maybe Dr. D has some," Ray said.
I groaned. "You know how I feel about him. If you want to try him then you go to him, I'm not doing it."
"I'll see if Kobra will go with me," he said. "It's too risky to travel alone."
"I'll stay and keep an eye on here," I said.
Ray nodded, shutting off the radio.
"What else do you think we need while we're out?" He asked.
"We're running low on matches," I said. "Some flares would be nice. If you can find or buy it cheap then food is always helpful, especially canned. I don't know if B needs special supplies, ask Kobra. She's potty-trained so I think she's okay, she doesn't need diapers or special baby food. But maybe some kid stuff would be nice, all she does is play with rocks and dig holes. Um, if you can find paint, we're running low on green."
"You have to stop painting everything green," he said.
"Dude, I like the color, it's fine to have a preference when I paint my shit," I said. "I don't know what else. Oh, masks, you can get them some masks."
Kobra came out and smiled.
"You want to go out for some supplies with me?" Ray asked.
"Yeah, I can do that," he said as he walked over and then leaned closer to me. "You might need to keep a closer eye on B yourself and take care of her, I don't know if Poison's gonna get up at all today."
"Yeah, of course," I said.
He walked over, poking his head into Gerard's room.
"Hey, I'm gonna go out on a supply run with Jet," he said. "Ghoul is gonna be out here if you or B need anything, he's gonna keep an eye out, okay?"
If Poison said anything, I didn't hear it. Kobra pulled his head back and I handed him my blaster before they left. I did some cleaning and organizing around the place. I've found myself keeping things cleaner and more child-proof. We no longer leave knives on counters and tables or low shelves. I've started cleaning them up and putting them in a box. I even cleaned up the broken glass in the corner that Jet and I never bothered to pick up because both of us knew not to mess with broken glass.
Afterwards, I was just laying in the diner booth reading Ray's building journal. He was the more tech-savvy builder between us. He was the one who made the shower contraption, the one who works on the car, and the one who fixes the plumbing issues. He had all these little blueprints for different ideas and things he wanted to build.
I was just looking at a machine called a vend-a-hack when B started crying. I sat up, setting the journal on the table. I waited for Poison to calm her but it never came, she continued to cry. I bit my lip, wanting to intervene but I knew I couldn't without his permission. She wasn't my child, afterall. It was weird, though. I felt the need to protect her and care for her.
"Ghoul!" Poison called.
That was my cue to stand up and go into his room. B was sitting up on the bed crying. Poison was laying down, his eyes puffy and his cheeks red. I sat on the bed next to B, gently rubbing her back.
"Hey, sweetheart, what's wrong?" I asked.
"Potty!" She cried.
"Alright, sweetie, let's go use the potty," I said.
I picked her up, carrying her to the bathroom. I helped her use the toilet and wash her hands before we went back out to the main diner area.
"Daddy sad," she said as I sat on the floor with her.
"Yeah, he is," I said. "He's okay."
"He's okay," she repeated with a nod.
I grabbed her little box of rocks, letting her play with them on the floor. She put them in random patterns she found interesting or tried stacking them. It was time for dinner as I made us some sandwiches. B happily ate hers and I carried Poison's plate to his room.
"Hey, Poison," I said softly. "You didn't eat last night and haven't eaten at all today. You need to eat. I made you a sandwich."
"Not hungry," he mumbled.
"I know that you may not be hungry but you have to eat, you can't be starving out here in the zones, you need energy," I said. "If not for you then for your daughter. She needs you. She needs you to be okay."
Poison opened his eyes, looking up at me.
"Your daughter loves you so much," I said. "I don't want you to just ignore your feelings but you have to learn to deal with them and control them. B can't become an orphan. You've got your brother helping you and now you've got me and Jet as well. We can help you deal with this. Losing someone is hard, losing someone you were in love with is harder. You're right, I don't know what it's like. I've never been in love. I lost my parents and my little sister all at once. A scarecrow unit raided our house and killed them. Jet and I got out but not completely unscathed. It is gut-wrenching but it does get better. It always gets better. I--"
"Thirsty!" B shouted.
I sighed, setting his plate down on the bed next to him.
"Just try to eat, okay?" I asked.
Poison didn't answer but I left anyways. B looked up at me hopefully. I went to the fridge and got out some juice, pouring her a glass. I set it on the ground next to her plate and she smiled. She picked the cup up with both hands as she drank. I helped hold it so she wouldn't drop it. Her little hands looked so cute on the big glass. I helped set the glass down as we ate our sandwiches together.
"Pwincess?" She asked.
I grabbed her tiara off the counter and put it on her head. She was growing attached to it.
"You want a bath after your sandwich?" I asked.
"Bath!" B gasped. "Yay!"
We finished eating and I gave her a bath before changing her into some pajamas. We did a little more playing before night fell and I went to put her to bed. I walked into Poison's room, tucking her into bed beside him. His plate was empty and I picked it up, walking out and setting it on the counter.
I went to my own room after shutting off the diner lights, taking off my shoes and stripping down to my boxers. I laid down in my bed and stared up at the ceiling. Poison's voice started up as he sang to B and I slowly drifted off into sleep.
