Chapter Twenty Two.
Photo is your last look at Becky, for this book at least!
It was three days later when Zeke finally built up the nerve to go and visit Becky, he drove to Lacy's apartment half hoping that Becky wouldn't be there and half hoping she would be. Lacy wasn't home, he knew that because she was working at the garage when he left and by working mostly distracting Demon.
He snuck out claiming he was going for lunch but pretty sure they all knew he was lying, He'd spoke to Ty only once on the phone. It hadn't gone well but at least he knew that his little brother was still alive.
He didn't want to visit Becky but a low hum and burning question in the back of his mind forced him to, he supposed he could have called but he wasn't sure she'd even take his call at this point. He knocked on the door and it took a few minutes for her to answer, when she did the first thing he noticed is that she was standing and he felt a flood of relief hit him so hard it made his knees week.
"Zeke....."
"You're standing...."he managed, gripping the door frame and fighting back tears of relief.
"Yeah, the doctor said I can try walking and standing in small amounts."
"So...you're not...paralyzed?" He dared to ask.
"No, there's no permanent damage."
"That's good....I..."
"What do you want Zeke?!" She asked, getting straight to the point.
"Can I come in?" He asked.
She flung the door open wider, and turned shaking her head as she walked to the small blue couch. Her steps a little unsteady and uneven as she walked.
He gently closed the door behind him and saw her suitcases sitting next to it in a small pile, they had luggage tags secured to the straps.
"Are you...going somewhere?" He asked.
"I'm going home, tonight on the red eye. The doctor cleared me and I thought what the hell?"
"How long are you going to be gone?" He asked, taking a seat on a chair to her left.
"For good, I'm not coming back."
"Oh, won't you miss....your life here?"
"What you mean Ty?" She asked, her voice icy as she threw his past words in his face.
"No, I mean....yes but...everyone else too. Lacy, Morgan.."
"I can call them and text."
"Oh....yeah I guess...."
"What are you doing here? Zeke?" She interrupted.
"I just.....came by to.....to ask you something."
"Okay, go ahead." She pressed, just a little.
He glanced up at her and took a deep breath, her could see the hope blooming in her blue eyes. See the way she held her breath and bit her bottom lip, she was hoping for something big but that wasn't what he came for.
"Are.....are you.....on something?"
"Wait....what?" She asked, seeming confused.
"I only used protection once.....and I just needed to know...."
"You came here to find out if I'm pregnant?"
"Well yeah....I mean what else would I be here for?"
"I....I don't know," She admitted with a soft sigh.
"Well....I just...if you're pregnant then...I'll help you whatever you decide to do. I won't just run out on you."
"I'm not pregnant, I've been on the pill for years."
"Oh," He said softly, and he wasn't sure if he was relieved or disappointed.
He pushed the thought away, of course he was relieved. He didn't want a baby, not with Becky. He wasn't ready to be a father and they weren't in the kind of place where they should have a child, but still there was a small burning in his chest that said he was disappointed.
"Okay, I'll just leave you alone then."
He stood and she watched him go for a minute, when he reached the door and pulled it open she called out to him.
"Zeke?!"
"Yeah?"
"Don't you have anything else to say to me?!" She cried, almost in a begging tone.
"What do you want me to say Becky?" He turned to face her.
"That it wasn't a mistake, that you do care about me. I want you to tell me you don't regret what happened and that you want a life with me. I want you to tell me you love me and that we will have a life together. I want a life with you Zeke!"
"I can't Becky."
"Can't or won't?"
"Maybe a little bit of both," He admitted.
She took a deep breath and wiped a tear from her cheek as she stood up. She walked towards him and on instinct he opened his arms, ready to hold her but she brushed passed him and opened the door the rest of the way.
"I think you should go now," She said, not looking at him.
"Will you text me when your plane lands?" He asked.
"No."
"What about..."
"No, Zeke. I can't keep playing this game with you. Ten years is long enough, don't you think?"
He wanted to protest but deep down he knew she was right. He wanted to touch her but knew it was a bad idea and wouldn't help the situation any. Instead he just gave a small nod of agreement and hurried out the door and down the steps without even a backward glance.
She slammed the door, maybe a little harder than she meant to and pressed her back against it. Blinking back tears and trying to take a deep breath. She let her head fall back against the door a little harder than was necessary wincing when she did so.
"You're going to regret me Ezekiel Greene, you're going to live to regret me." She said softly to herself and prayed with all her heart that it was true.
