Chapter Ten.

"Come on Becky, time to get up." Zeke said.

"Are my parents here?" She asked.

"Not yet but the pizza is and your wheelchair."

"You'll have to forgive me for not leaping for joy."

She heard him moving around the room but refused to roll over and actually look at him. He opened the blinds, casting the room in a bright light and she wined.

"Come on," He said a little gentler than normal.

She rolled over, it was difficult without the use of her legs but when she managed he was standing behind the wheelchair. She took a deep breath and stared at the evil, metal contraption that she'd be trapped in.

She pushed up into the sitting position and he helped her strip the blankets from her body. She reached from him reluctantly and he lifted her into the wheelchair, careful not to jostle her too much.

"Are you hungry?"

"Starved."

"I got extra mushrooms, just the way you like it."

"What about you? You hate mushrooms."

"I got me a meat lovers"

He turned and began pushing her out the hall towards the small dining room, she rested her arms on her lap. She sat quietly which was unusual for her as he pushed her into the dining room and to the table. He disappeared into the kitchen and came out with a plate of pizza and a drink for her. He set them in front of her.

"Have you heard from my parents?" She asked.

"Not since the hospital but they were going to your place and then stopping at the pharmacy. I'm sure they'll be here."

"Have you heard from Ty?" She asked.

"No, but I'm sure he will check in soon."

She picked at her food with a heavy sigh, suddenly not as hungry as she thought. Having Zeke push her into the wheelchair made her realize the very real and painful situation she was in, she may never walk again.

"Come on Becks, eat up." He urged.

"I'm really not hungry...."

"You were starving a minute ago."

"I know."

"Are you in pain?" He asked.

The Doctor had warned her that as the swelling in her back went down she may experience pains in her muscles and nerves. He had written her a subscription for pain pills and muscle relaxers.

"No," She rubbed her eyes.

"Look, I'll make you a deal. You eat and then we can watch one of those God awful foreign movies that you love."

"Populaire?" She asked.

"Fine."

He knew the movie well, it was long, it was romantic, it was French and despite not speaking a lick of French Becky could almost quote it line for line. He didn't want to watch it again but seeing her finally start picking apart her pizza to eat made it worth it.

After dinner he pushed her chair into the small living room and carefully lifted her onto the couch, taking up a seat at the opposite end and placing her feet on his lap. He tossed her the remote and settled a bowl of popcorn on her lap.

"I'll get fat," She said.

"Well, you don't have to eat it."

He leaned over, pretending he was going to take the bowl but she pulled it closer to herself. He couldn't remember the last time they'd watched a movie just the two of them, they often did movie nights at his place but usually Ty was with them.

"Zeke?"

"Yeah?"

"Thank you, for...letting me stay here. I know how you feel about me and I know you don't really want me here."

"That's not true, you're always welcome here."

"Come on, Ty's not here we can be honest with each other. You hate me, I know that."

He didn't reply, didn't see a need too. Becky was never stupid, she knew what their relationship was and she knew damned well why.

"Look, I owe you one. Alright? You saved my ass when I was locked up."

She didn't say anything but her face fell and she dropped her head, staring at the bowl of popcorn like it held the answers to the universe.

He turned his attention to the terrible movie that was currently occupying his flat screen television. He sat through the French movie only glancing at her every so often, she seemed completely zoned into the movie and he knew she'd seen it at least fifty times

She always cried at the same exact spot in the movie, the female lead told the man she was in love him and he rejected her and it was a toss up with who cried harder, the female lead of Becky. This time was no exception, when he glanced over she was crying. Rolling his eyes he handed her a box of kleenex.

"It's just a movie, you know they get together in the end."

"I know but....he's an ass," She replied motioning at the screen.

"He's doing what's best for her."

"What is best for her is if he just lets her make her own decision."

He glanced at his watch, hoping her parents came soon so he could get a shower and not have to worry about her while he was gone.

"Do you have somewhere to be?" She asked."

"No."

"Liar."

"I just really need a shower and I hate to leave you alone."

"So that's what smells," She teased.

"That or your feet."

"Go, get a shower."

"Are you sure?"

"Yes."

He sighed and lifted her legs from his lap, standing up. He handed her the remote and she took it turning down the volume on the television. He pulled a blanket from off the back of the couch and covered her with it, knowing she was cold most of the time.

"I'll be right back," He promised.

"I'll be fine."

He stared at her a minute before disappearing down the hall towards the bathroom. He stepped inside and closed the door behind him, stripping off his clothes and stepping under the hot spray of water.

In as long as he'd known Becky she'd always gone out of her way and against his wishes to make sure he and Ty were taken care of. The least he could do was let her stay with him now, at least until Ty was home.
