Chapter Five.

Zeke went straight back to the club, he needed a cold drink and an alcohol induced coma. He hadn't slept in what fell like days, he couldn't remember the last time he ate. Becky was with her family so he knew she would be okay for a few hours while he tried to get some rest.
He parked his bike with the others and walked inside the club, Sky was near the bar having a drink and Zeke walked over to join him.
"Pour me a whiskey," Zeke said.
"How's Becky?" Sky asked.
"She's.....got a long road ahead of her."
"But she's going to make it?"
"Yeah, she's going to make it."
"Wolf is still trying to track down Ty."
Zeke rubbed his tired eyes, not sure if it was the whiskey or the passed few hours that had him so bone tired. He finished his drink and slid from his stool, heading towards his room.
He pushed open the door to the darkened room and stripped off his jacket, boots, t-shirt and jeans leaving him in just his boxers he collapsed onto his bed and was asleep in merely seconds.
When he woke up he realized he'd slept later than he'd intended to, in fact it was well past seven at night. He knew that visiting hours would be over and that Becky's family would have left for the night.
He lay in the king size bed and stared at the ceiling, she was getting the best care that money could buy and her family would be back first thing in the morning. He knew that Becky was fine but the though of her alone in the hospital still bothered him. She was hurt and she was alone, he tossed and turned for a few minutes before giving up and climbing from the bed.
He pulled on his clothes, moving from his room and through the main room. He climbed onto his back and before he knew where he was going he was headed towards the hospital. He parked in the parking garage and was surprised when none of the nurses or doctors prohibited him from walking onto her floor after hours.
He was walking down the hall when he heard a voice call to him, turning around he saw Ivan standing nearby.
"Hey, what are you doing here?" Ivan asked.
"I was in an accident, Becky is still here. You?"
"Laurel....she hasn't been released yet."
"I thought she was going to pull through."
"She is, but....it was pretty close to her heart and they're just being extra cautious."
Zeke gave a small nod, whatever kind of relationship Laurel and Ivan had nobody understood it but them. No longer married, presidents of rival clubs but undoubtedly the best of friends anyone in the business would find.
"Is Becky going to make it?" Ivan asked.
"Yeah, she's a tough girl."
"So is Laurel."
"I hope she gets out soon," Zeke offered.
"Me too, and same with Becky."
Zeke gave Ivan a small wave before continuing down the hall to Becky's room, he pushed open the door and stepped into the dark room. She was sleeping, her deep even breathing and the steady heart monitor almost soothing in the darkness.
He walked up to the bed and looked down at her, sleeping peacefully. Her parents were long gone and all the lights in the room were off. He watched her for a minute before walking to the large window and staring at the darkened city.
"Zeke?" Her voice croaked.
"Yeah?" He called back without turning around.
"You're still here?" She asked.
"I'm not going anywhere."
"Promise?"
"I promise."
"I'm afraid....to be alone," She admitted softly.
"You're not alone."
She sighed in content and in a few seconds began breathing evenly with sleep. He turned back to the window, pushing a hand through his graying hair. He'd always felt somewhat responsible for Becky, mostly because since birth she'd always been around, when they were younger she was part of his family and now she was simply a thorn in his side.
She was still carefree and young and stupid, she went out and got too drunk always trusting that he or Ty would ensure she'd get home safely. He had begged her and Ty not to follow him to this city, where the sinful and the soulless ran free but Ty followed him and Becky had followed Ty. He could still remember the day he told them he was leaving for good, it was only two days after he buried his parents.
TEN YEARS EARLIER................................
"Zeke, don't go." Ty begged.
"I belong there Ty, you're going to be okay. The Lockharts will check in on you and I'll be back before you know it."
"I can't make it without you."
"Yes you can, I'm going to see to it that you have enough money to go to any college you want."
"I want to come with you," Ty said.
Zeke sighed as he finished strapping his saddlebags onto his bike and turned back to his baby brother. Ty was only seventeen but he was growing into a better man than Zeke could ever hope to be in his twenty four years on earth. While it was hard to leave his last family member so soon after their parents death Ty's only hope to become someone was that Zeke raise enough money to pay off the funeral debt and start paying for school. It was hard but deep down Zeke knew it was the best for everyone.
"You can't come Ty, the city is too dangerous and besides it's so far away. What about Becky?"
Ty was so madly in love with Becky you'd have to be a fool not to see it and Zeke was under every impression that the two were in a serious relationship.
"I can bring her with me," Ty replied.
"No, you can't. If you love her don't ever bring her to that city."
"Zeke...."
"It's for the best Ty, you can be somebody. You can be more than I was."
"I just want to stay with you."
Zeke moved to embrace his brother, hugging him close for a long minute. Pulling away he made it a point to look directly at Ty.
"I love you and me being gone....it's the best thing for you."
"I love you too,"Ty said.
Zeke turned and swung onto his bike just as Becky Lockhart rushed from her house across the street. He shook his head as she approached, running barefoot across the street like some kind of little wild animal.
"When are you coming back?" She asked.
"I'm not."
"Zeke....."
"Don't...whatever you have to say just don't. Save it for confession or your stupid diary but I don't want to hear it." He snapped.
She bit her lower lip and stared down at her pink toes, wisely shutting up. He glanced at Ty who looked confused at his outburst but said nothing. He'd never snapped at her before two nights ago, but now his parents were dead and everything had changed.
"I'll call you," He promised Ty.
Ty gave a sad nod and Becky backed away from his bike as he kicked up the kickstand but she didn't make any attempt to speak to him again. He started his bike and road out of the town for the last time.
PRESENT DAY...............
Three short months later, Ty and Becky arrived on his doorstep together. His first thought was to send them back but Ty refused to leave and Becky voiced the same. So Zeke made sure they both got into good colleges and that they each finished school, once they were out Becky began reporting and Ty joined the club full time.
While Zeke didn't want his little brother involved in the club it allowed him to watch him closely and spend time with him and Ty's schooling allowed him an alternative lifestyle if he ever desired one.
As for Becky he tolerated her for Ty's sake and kept a watchful eye on her for her parents but he never felt close to her like he used to.
He turned back to the bed where she lay sleeping and prayed to whatever God was listening that someone would track down Ty and he'd come home soon. He meant what he said and he would help Becky but that didn't mean he was happy about it or that he wanted too. Deep down he'd rather it be Ty than him.
He collapsed onto the small folding bed, exhausted from what little movement it took to get him there. His concussion was still wearing on him enough that he was sleepy and while listening to the even rhythm of Becky's heart monitor he fell into a dreamless sleep.
