Epilogue

Zealand and Delfe arrived in London in early September 1667 to learn the war had ended with a peace treaty ratified in late August. All existing letters of marque were declared void; though to allow time to communicate this, they remained valid overseas until April 1668. To not stir animosity, Captain Bryson chose not to exercise theirs, making easier the decision to hunt pirates.

Territory captured after the treaty had to be returned, so Cayenne and Suriname, taken by Admiral Harman in September and October, reverted to the French and the Dutch. The treaty also confirmed the English possession of New Netherland, the thriving former Dutch colony north of Virginia. [1]

Captain Bryson continued mentoring Charles in Zealand, and they had great success hunting pirates until 1673 when he sold the ship to Mister Angus. As the new captain, Angus appointed Charles as his First Officer. When Charles purchased Zealand from him in 1676 and became the captain, he reverted her name to the original Dutch, Zeelandia. [2]

Notes:

[1] New Netherland was present-day New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut, with portions of Pennsylvania and Rhode Island.
