Cliffhanger Battle
"Gym, gym, gym, gym, gym, gym, gym, gym, gym!" Chespin chanted as we walked along the roads of Cyllage City, "Where's the gym? I'll challenge the gym! I'll win at the gym! Where's the gym?"
"Be quite before a smack you with my tail, AGAIN!" I growled.
"I just want to know where the gym is," Chespin pouted. I glared at him.
"Where's the gym?" Morgan inquired, "I don't see it."
"The gym is on top of that cliff," Genevieve replied, pointed to a large mountain to the east of the city.
"Do we have to climb up there?" Nick asked.
"Well," Genvieve started, but she was cut off my Morgan.
"Let's go! More climbing, less whining!"
"Urg. Remind me how I got stuck traveling with her," Nick complained.
"It was your choice," Genevieve replied, "You can't complain."
"Great. More walking," Fennekin stated sarcastically.
Grudingly, our group started to climb up the slope, with Morgan and Chespin in the lead. When we finally reached the top, everyone was out of breath.
"Finally!" Chespin breathed, "We made it!"
"The Cyllage City Gym!" Morgan cheered, observing the building before us, "We made it!"
After everyone had gotten their breath back, we went inside.
"Wow," Morgan gasped as we entered the gym.
A rock wall towered in front of us. Colorful foot and hand holds were scattered up the sides. Close to the top, a man was climbing. He had grey eyes and his black hair much resembled the cliff he was climbing on. He was wearing the stranded climbing equipment.
"Hello!" the man called down, "I am Grant, the gym leader of the Cyllage City Gym. I assume you are here to challenge me."
"My name is Morgan!" Morgan called, "I'm going to be the one challenging your Gym."
"Great!" Grant stated, "The battlefield is on top of this mountain. You see, my Cyllage Gym specializes in Rock type Pokemon. I feel like all challengers should experience my great love of rocks. So I designed the Gym to accomplish that by allowing you to climb up on your own power."
"What?!" Nick shouted, "Do we all have to climb it?"
"No, not at all," Grant answered, "There's an elevator that will take you to the top. You don't have to climb if you don't want to. Just because you don't climb the wall, doesn't mean I won't except your challenge at the top."
"So, what will it be, Morgan?" Genevieve inquired, "Climb or ride?"
Morgan's eyes scanned the rock surface as she sized up the climbing wall. "I'll climb," she stated, "Coming Chespin?"
"You bet!" Chespin exclaimed, launching himself at the wall and scrambling up it was fast as he could.
I rolled my eyes at his somewhat childish behavior and opted for the elevator with everyone else. When the elevator reached the top, Fennekin I raced out and peered down the rock wall to where Chespin and Morgan was climbing. To their credit, they were already about halfway up.
"You can make it, Chespin!" I called down.
"'Cause if you don't, the floor is more than willing to greet you!" Fenekin added.
"Thanks for the encouragement!" Chespin yelled back.
Morgan and Chespin eventually reached the top and hauled themselves onto the battlefield, panting from the effort of the climb.
"That was way harder than it looked," Morgan panted.
"That was impressive, Morgan," Grant stated, "Tell me, what were you thinking about when you were climbing?"
Morgan thought for a moment, then replied, "Ah, nothing."
"Great," Grant replied, "And where did you look?"
Morgan thought again, before answering, "Up, where I'm going next."
"Excellent!" Grant exclaimed, "That means you achieved the state of enlightenment. Your mind was crystal clear, unclouded. Now that you've successfully conquered the wall, the next wall you're going to need to conqueror is me. That is what you came for, right?"
"Right!" Morgan confirmed.
Both trainers took their respective places on the battlefield. And a referee came to judge while the rest of us filed into the spectator's platform.
"The battle between Grant, the Cyllage City Gym Leader, and Morgan, the challenger, is about to begin!" the referee announced, "The Gym Leader will have the use of only two Pokemon, while the Challenger will have the use of all the Pokemon that she currently has in her possession. Only the challenger will be allowed to substitute Pokemon during the battle. So, if you please, bring out your Pokemon."
"Onix, let's go!" Grant commanded, releasing his first Pokemon.
"Pidgey, you're up!" Morgan exclaimed, sending Pidgey into the battle.
"Uh, aren't Flying types weak to Rock types?" Fennekin inquired.
"Sure are," I grumbled, "What is she thinking?"
"Pidgey,Quick Attack!" Morgan commanded.
"Onix, Rock Polish!" Grant ordered.
Onix sparked with blue energy, increasing his speed enough to dodge Pidgey's Quick Attack.
"Now, Onix, use Iron Tail!" Grant exclaimed.
"Dodge!" Morgan shouted.
Onix's tail shone silver, and he swung at Pidgey. Pidgey attempted to dodge. However, due to Onix's increased speed, he failed, and Onix's Iron Tail sent Pidgey smashing to the ground.
"Pidgey!" Morgan exclaimed.
"Rock Tomb!" Grant called.
Onix summoned multiple boulders, which crashed down onto Pidgey. When the dust cleared, Pidgey had fainted.
"That was fast," Fennekin noted.
"Pidgey was at a disadvantage," I pointed out.
"If you say so," Fennekin replied.
"Pidgey, return!" Morgan commanded.
Pidgey returned to his ball in a flash of red light.
"Chespin, it's your turn!" Morgan shouted.
Chespin eagerly leapt onto the battlefield and attempted to intimidate his larger opponent. And failed. Miserably.
Grant wasted no time. "Onix, Rock Tomb!" he ordered.
"Vine Whip!" Morgan called.
Onix sent large rocks falling towards Chespin, who shattered each bolder with his Vine Whip.
"Onix, Iron Tail!" Grant exclaimed.
"Chespin, Rollout!" Morgan shouted.
Chespin curled into a tight ball as Onix swung his Iron Tail at him. The hit sent Chespin flying into the air.
"Land on top of him, Chespin!" Morgan yelled.
Chespin uncurled and adjusted his trajectory in mid- flight, landing on top of Onix.
"Now use Vine Whip repeatedly!" Morgan commanded.
"Shake him off!" Grant called.
Onix frugally attempted to shake Chespin off while Chespin whipped Onix with vines continually.
"Now, finish him off with Rollout!" Morgan shouted.
Chespin pushed off of Onix and curled into a ball, ramming Onix with a Rollout which was made more powerful due to gravity.
Onix let out a roar and crashed to the ground, fainted. Chespin landed nimbly on the ground in front of Morgan, smirking.
Grant held out a Pokeball. "Thanks. Great job, Onix," Grant stated, "Please Return." Onix vanished in a flash of red light.
"Time for my second Pokemon," Grant said, "Tyrunt, let's go!"
Morgan pulled out her Pokedex. "Tyrunt, the Royal Heir Pokémon. Tyrunt's jaws are so big and powerful, it can crunch up a car. If it doesn't like something, it responds with a wild tantrum."
"Alright then," Morgan stated, "Chespin, use Vine Whip!"
"Use Crunch on Chespin's Vine Whip!" Grant called.
Chespin summoned vines and prepared to whack Tyrunt with them. However, the second the vines were in range, Tyrunt snapped at them, catching the vines in him strong jaw. Chespin panicked and attempted to withdraw the vines, but to no avail.
"Now swing him around!" Grant commanded.
Chespin let out a yelp as Tyrunt swung him around by his vines before slamming him into the ground. Chespin staggered to his feet, panting.
"Finish him off with Iron Tail!" Grant ordered.
"Dodge it!" Morgan shouted.
Tyrunt's tail turned a metallic grey, and he swung it a Chespin. Chespin attempted to side step the attack. However, he wasn't fast enough, and Tryunt's Iron Tail slammed him in the side, sending Chespin flying. When he hit the ground, Chespin fainted.
Morgan detached Chespin's Pokeball from her belt. "You did a good job, Chespin," she stated, "take a rest."
Morgan clipped another ball off her belt. "This is my first battle with this Pokémon," she stated, "I'm so excited!"
"Come on out, Amaura!" she called.
Morgan tossed out a Pokeball, and in a flash of light, out popped an Amaura.
"So that's the Pokemon she got out of the Fossil," Nick muttered. He pulled out his Pokedex and scanned Amaura.
"Amaura, the Tundra Pokemon," a mechanical voice explained, "Amaura lived in cold climates with no violent predators. This Pokemon is said to have been revived from a part of it's body that was frozen in a glacier a hundred million years ago."
"Amaura, use Icy Wind!" Morgan commanded.
"Dodge it!" Grant called.
Amaura's mouth glowed a light blue, and he released a powerful blizzard. Tyrunt attempted to dodge the attack, but was too slow. The Icy Wind slammed him in the side and sent him skidding several feet back.
"Follow it up with Rock Tomb!" Grant ordered.
"Counter with Rock Throw!" Morgan exclaimed.
Tyrunt became outlined in a white light, and several boulders shot out of the ground, outlined in the same white light. The boulders then flew at Amaura. In response, Amaura stomped the ground, and sent several boulders flying up to intercept Tyrunt's Rock Tomb.
"Take Down!" Morgan shouted.
"Counter with Dragon Tail!" Grant commanded.
Amaura was encased in an orange aura, and she raced at the opposing Tyrunt. Tyrunt's tail became covered in glowing green scales. When Amaura got closer, he swung his tail at his opponent. However, he missed his target, and Amaura slammed into Tyrunt. Tyrunt was knocked back several paces.
Tyrunt struggled to his feet and snarled at Amaura before collapsing back onto the ground, fainted.
"Tyrunt is unable to battle! Amaura wins, which means the match goes to Morgan, the challenger!"
"Great job, Amaura!" Morgan cheered, "I knew you could do it!"
"Wonderful! By working together, you all managed to scale the wall that is know as the Cyllage City Gym. As a symbol of that, I present you with the Cliff Badge," Grant stated, handing Morgan the badge.
"Yes!" Morgan cheered, "I got the Cliff Badge!"
Everyone exited the observation station and crowded around Morgan to get a better look at the badge.
"Great job, Morgan!" Genevieve congratulated her.
"That was amazing!" Nick exclaimed.
"I'm amazed that Amaura's Take Down managed to beat Tyrunt," Fennekin observed, "I never would have thought it was possible."
"It was a super effective attack," I noted.
"But isn't Take Down a Normal- type move?" Conner asked.
"Usually, yes," I replied, "However, Amaura's Ability is Refrigerate, which changes Normal- type moves into Ice- type moves. And not only that, but Ice- type moves will do quadruple the damage on a Dragon- and Rock- type Pokemon."
"You certainly did your research," Fennekin noted.
"We had better get to a Pokemon Center to heal up your Pokemon," Nick stated.
"Right," Morgan agreed. She turned to Amaura. "Return!"
Amaura disappeared in a flash of red light.
"Oh! That's right, Chespin was knocked out by Tyrunt!" Fennekin stated, "I bet he's sulking in his Pokeball right now."
"I thought this conversation was abnormally educational and annoyance- free," I noted, "Chespin's not here to be annoyingly thick headed."
"Come on, Amanda and Conner!" Genevieve called, "We're leaving!"
Fennekin, Conner and I raced after Genevieve towards the elevator as Morgan and Nick lead the way out.

I'm really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY sorry I haven't updated in five months.
Yes, I have my reasons. A) Losing Hope was entered in the Watty Awards and I HAD to get it done B) Gym battle chapters are hard to write and require a LOT of research C) Every single time I was like "Alright. I seriously NEED to work on Zapped," SOMETHING happened (Such as; my computer ran out of battery and I couldn't find the cord; my brother demanded attention; supper was ready; I got yelled at about homework; my cat sat on my computer and refused to move; Glitchpad acted up again; the WiFi shut down; ect) D) the PLANNING for this book is taking FOREVER E) Procrastination is evil F) Writer's block hates my guts G) I JUST COULDN'T, OKAY?!?!?!?!
So, in short, I'm really sorry I haven't updated, and it is partially my fault. No excuses (there is a difference between excuses and reasons!).
Anyways... MERRY CHRISTMAS/ HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!! This is my (one day late, but it still counts) present to you! Along with chapters in both Shifting Dimension and Sempre at Pax.
